286  Economy / Marketplace / 175 BTC Competition to Design the Logo at Ogrr.com on: January 26, 2012, 06:09:31 AM
submit entries here:  https://ogrr.com/viewtopic.php?f=362&t=513

Hey guys,

I thought about posting this at one of the big logo tournament sites but I figured it'd be fun to throw it out there to the community.

This contest will end at 11:59pm Feb 8th, 2012, Pacific Time. Warnings will be posted as the deadline approaches.

Ogrr.com is a community marketplace forum that encourages trade in Bitcoin.  It offers the ability to deposit and withdraw Bitcoin for those who don't wish to wait for confirms.  It also offers a ratings/feedback system for traders, and some generally useful tools for those trading in Bitcoin.

First place is 100 BTC
Second place is 50 BTC
Third place is 25 BTC

The logo should simply be 'Ogrr', and not include the .com.
To receive your prize, you'll need to provide the image as a vector, with all the layers and everything intact so that it can easily be modified and scaled.
Please do not steal ideas from other entries for your own design. If I like aspects of two designs, I may ask that both entrants work together to come up with a hybrid design that may take both 1st and 2nd places, and then have the team split the 150 BTC prize.
Please do not borrow too heavily from other existing logos that belong to other entities/people/companies. To qualify, your logo must not be legally problematic, violate any existing trademarks.
Entries should be posted and made viewable in the thread at Ogrr. Use the IMG tags to include it in your post if you have it hosted elsewhere, or attach the images to your post. I will attempt to give feedback as often as possible.

While the forum has started with a pretty heavy gamer base, we don't intend to keep it that way so we're not looking to appeal to that crowd especially. It could be fun to have a mascot.. possibly an ogre who says grr a lot, but that's just an idea and certainly not a requirement.. it's not even a well-thought-out idea. Another idea I had was that the O could look like a coin, but it probably shouldn't be a Bitcoin.

I am not pro at running logo contests so if I've forgotten anything important, please let me know.

I'll try to keep up with this forum but I expect most of the discussion on this topic to happen over at the Ogrr forums.

Again, entries go here:  https://ogrr.com/viewtopic.php?f=362&t=513

287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I talked with Amazon Live Support today... on: January 16, 2012, 09:01:27 AM
I think it is more likely that Mr Jit there didn't know what you were talking about, and just gave you a standard "finish the discussion with client happy" answer.

+1

I would still be cautious shorting during business hours in case the make an announcement.

Others should have this same conversation.  If they get asked enough they will eventually be given an official position to read.

Definitely.  I'm sure this is just a canned response.  I'll believe it when I see it.

289  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: (M)MORPG with a Bitcoin currency on: December 26, 2011, 09:28:42 AM
I think you better be damn sure your game doesn't have any dupe methods/exploits before you go allowing BTC to be generated directly to external wallets.
290  Economy / Marketplace / Ogrr.com Now Open to Public on: December 24, 2011, 09:38:30 PM
Ogrr is an online community and marketplace forum that uses Bitcoin as its forum currency.

archive.org has no history of the site.  I think you'd have better luck selling it (or at least having the content valued) if you actually made the content available for potential purchasers to view.  Is there any advantage to parking it while you're trying to sell it?
293  Other / Meta / Re: Get Donator status by donating 10 BTC on: October 19, 2011, 01:50:12 AM
New VIP donator: btcx. Thanks!

I may raise the required donator/VIP donation levels if the BTC price stays this low, so now would be a great time to donate.

hahah I was going to say the same thing.  Donate now while it's cheap!

Fundamental understanding of Bitcoin and ability to teach, research, answer questions and guide new users in its use.
Knowledge and direct experience with various Bitcoin pools, exchanges, clients, merchants, forums, blogs and other services.
Knowledge and direct experience with various online games, gaming forums and blogs, other gaming services.
You keep up with Bitcoin news and things happening in the community.

Bonus:
You have prior customer service experience.
You have prior experience as a forum moderator.
You speak other languages fluently.
You keep up with gaming news.
You do NOT have a WoW addiction.

To apply:
PM me here and I'll give you an email address to send your resume to.  Don't worry if it's not super professional.  I realize the pool of candidates is going to be pretty small so I'm not going to nitpick about that stuff.  You could provide some links to your profiles on other forums and that'd be pretty helpful.  Explain why you think you'd be good for the job, what kind of gaming experience you have, what your level of Bitcoin knowledge is.

295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Investors hiring for 'Bitcoin successor' on: September 17, 2011, 03:55:38 AM
What a joke. They want to hire CEO, lead front-end, and lead back-end developers (all founder-level positions), for what one can only assume from the posting to be minimal/non-controlling equity? And no investor worth their salt recruits a position this high up off a job posting. You use people you know, and the people they know--everyone knows everyone here in the valley. Who are these jokers?

There are silicon valley startups working on bitcoin. There are even some working on new blockchains (I'm lead developer for one of them). But these guys come off as pretty amateurish.

I get the impression that the people quickest to dismiss this are heavily invested in Bitcoin (or their own blockchain).  Having worked in the valley on a number of startups over the past 10 years, I can say that nothing about their job ad is inherently "amateurish".

CEO and Software/Web Leads can be founder level positions but you can certainly hire for these positions and I don't think their offers of $75-$150k/yr are unreasonable.  We don't know how much equity they're giving up but for $150k/yr, it would be unreasonable to expect a controlling stake.  From my understanding, this project will be open source (at some point) and the investors plan to make their money back by either getting in early or through some of the extra services that they'll develop/provide for the new currency before it's publicly revealed.  It's not really clear from the post how "StealthCoin" will be created and distributed.  If it is successful, it's easy to see how there will be money to be made by being the first to offer the usual wallet/banking/exchange/merchant services for it.

I know plenty of investors and startups in the valley who hire off of CL, SO, Dice.  Hell, I know some who have hired off of OKCupid.  Everybody does not know everybody and you can't assume that you always know somebody who knows somebody who is qualified, willing and able to take on your project when you need them.  We don't know who these guys are yet and maybe they're trying to keep themselves anonymous, which would make it difficult to hire through friends.  You can call these guys jokers but in my experience the minute you say "that could never work" the impossible starts whooping your ass.

Anyway, we'll see what happens.  Maybe these guys are amateurs and maybe they're throwing their money away but that's their prerogative.  Several groups are working on blockchain forks and a few are working on completely new architectures for p2p decentralized currencies.  It's an exciting time and I think competition and innovation in this space is a great thing.  For the most part we're all on the same team.  We want one open source decentralized p2p currency to rule them all.  We just don't agree on what that technology looks like and how we're going to get there.  Personally, I'm supportive of all efforts to improve on Bitcoin and alternatives, and I think that if people want to risk their own time/money in the process of making those improvements they deserve a chance at making a profit out of it.  I don't need to criticize any efforts.  The market will do a fine job of that for me.

298  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A comprehensive critique of the weaknesses of Bitcoin... on: July 24, 2011, 03:15:16 AM

... the author represents kakigarden - they're positioning themselves as a competitor to Bitcoin - but there seems to be very few details published about what, exactly, they're proposing -

The fact that they're raising funding makes me suspicious already.  A currency immune to Bitcoin's weaknesses will not be competition for Bitcoin.
