Guys.  This is from the 21st...

282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I've just been robbed :-( on: September 29, 2012, 02:21:15 AM
Even someone with brief access to your laptop could simply run ssh-copy-id to some remote server they control.
ssh-copy-id transfers the public key.  That is fine.  Your public key can be public.  It's the private key that you have to protect and often have encrypted.

Stories like this make me want to change all my passwords and move to new hot wallets.  This is why I keep my large stash in an offline Armory wallet.
283  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: colored bitcoins/distributed exchanges proof-of-concept on: September 29, 2012, 01:43:52 AM
This is an interesting idea.  However I don't see how it makes a distributed exchange possible.  The hard part is keeping track of buy/sell orders and colored coins don't do anything for that.
284  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin-Denominated Poker Chips on: September 29, 2012, 01:32:08 AM
Being poker chips, do they really need stored value?  Normal casino chips aren't actually worth dollars anywhere but the casino that issued them.

I like the fractional coins. They look really nice.
285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Please test (if you dare): next and next-test 2012-09-20 on: September 21, 2012, 04:43:51 AM
My brew tap is still up.  I've set it up as head-only so it will always tracks luke's latest next-test branch.

Code:
brew tap homebrew/versions #for berkeleydb-4
brew tap WyseNynja/bitcoin
brew install --HEAD wysenynja/bitcoin/bitcoind-next-test
286  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: P2Pool Server List on: September 19, 2012, 01:51:05 AM
I've updated my public node at p2pool.stitthappens.com to 5.0-2-gb1e5a50

I've taken my litecoin node offline.
287  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Diablo Mining Company (DMC) [140.1 gh] [6.700 mh/share] on: September 18, 2012, 02:18:25 AM
At this point, I would prefer DMC to liquidated as I see that as my only way out. Do we have the necessary numbers to tell how large of a loss that would be? A new and separate contract with whatever changes you want could easily be drafted.

If the 20% salary is changed to profit or Diablo is paid in shares (where he is still paid from profits), I would be happier, but would likely still prefer to be out of this altogether as my faith in the company has been heartily shaken.

Usagi, not everyone is super active on the forums.  Sometimes I need a day or so to respond.  Puppet is most definitely not the only one voicing his concerns in this public forum.

Also, please answer all of Factory's questions.  I also want to know the answers.

Thanks for helping out with this Nefario.  Without you here, there would be no actual recourse for shareholders.  I'm not saying Diablo would have necessarily run away with everyone's coin (what little is left at least), but I don't see how any of this discussion could have happened if you had not stepped in.
288  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Diablo Mining Company (DMC) [140.1 gh] [6.700 mh/share] on: September 16, 2012, 08:54:50 PM
I don't like this 20% plan.

The simple truth is that DMC is only about 1600 or 2000 bitcoins in size. If it makes, say, 20 BTC in a week, that means Diablo gets 4 bitcoins. That's $40. Do you know how much time and effort he is putting into this? A lot. A lot more than $40 a week. When this gets big, even when it gets up to $100k US in size, he will only be making $100 or $200 a week after the block reward cut and ASICs. That's at 20%.

The simple fact is, this is a major undertaking, and the 20% rate is quite fair. Again, considering real-world companies that only pay out 3 or 4% a year, DMC paying out 40% of it's profit each month is a really good deal.

The basic question is: Can this company afford to pay Diablo-D3 what a datacenter manager SHOULD be paid? 20% sounds about right, actually, considering his level of involvement in the project.

What if Diablo were given shares instead? It's not uncommon for people to be paid in options at start-ups.

That is true. Either way there will be value coming out of the company. I'll talk to Diablo and see what he thinks of the idea.

I'm glad to see that people are working to resolve this.  After that drop from 0.6BTC/share to 0.04BTC/share, something definitely needed a change.

Also, I still don't like this trade between usagi and diablo.  You can talk about it in terms of MH/share, but that doesn't get around that fact that usagi essentially bought shares available to anyone else at ~.6BTC for only .012BTC
I'm not against him being given value from the company (hence my suggestion to give him shares). I'm against him being paid a fixed % of revenue ahead of shareholders.  DMC is a long term investment, and I believe any salary should be thought of later and not paid now while the company's profitability is still in question.

Quote
Why does everyone keep talking about the trade between usagi and diablo? Sorry, but I partook in just 20% of the total shares traded in the ASICMINER deal. I traded 4200 out of 18700.  Thats 22%. I'm a minor player regarding that trade. I even lost my standing as majority shareholder. I simply approved the idea as the 60% shareholder at the time. Seriously, if it went to motion, it would have passed. I discussed this with nefario and coldhardmetal at the time. Diablo is NOT ON TRIAL HERE for the Asicminer trade. he announced what he was doing and did the trade with several people over the course of a week. That is not and never was what this was about, despite a great number of very vocal non-shareholders that shouldn't be commenting here...

Remember. He was NOT REPORTED for the ASICMINER trade. he was reported because he had not bought hardware and had repeatedly refused to buy hardware in violation of his contract, while at the same time announcing other plans like building a solar farm. THAT is what this is about.

Everyone is talking about it because whenever anyone reads that shares worth .6BTC were sold for .012BTC, they can't believe that this agreement is actually in the best interest of the DMC shareholders.  This thread is about DMC in general, not just his alleged violation of the contract or being marked as a scammer.  That is why I put "Also" at the beginning of my sentence; it was a separate idea that I had not yet voiced my (shareholding) opinion on.  However, I am sorry that I only mentioned your name rather than all of the parties involved with the ASICMINER trade.
289  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Diablo Mining Company (DMC) [140.1 gh] [6.700 mh/share] on: September 16, 2012, 08:13:17 PM
20% is the steepest I've seen across my GLBSE holdings for management fees etc., whatever you want to call them.

How is this warranted?

If he designs, builds, and manages a million dollar data center, I think paying him $200k is fine. Plus, 40% of net to shareholders is a lot. Most companies in the real world pay 1 to 5% in dividends per year. This way, shareholders still get 3 or 4% a month. I think it's a good deal.

Another way of looking at it, is that this is incentive for Diablo to do a good job. If he does it right, he gets paid. Management incentive was something missing from the previous contract. Now that it's in, I feel confident we can move forward. A little accountability and transparency goes a long way.
I don't like this 20% plan.

What if Diablo were given shares instead? It's not uncommon for people to be paid in options at start-ups.

Any chance the OSX cppforswig makefile changes are merged into master?  If they are, I'll update my tap to that.

What changes are those?  I thought I had already put them in and you had verified that it works...?  Or was it put in a different branch and never merged into master?

I'm not sure what commit the change is from, but it appears that it is in both dev and threading and not master.

I think the part that matters is:
Code:
UNAME := $(shell uname)

ifeq ($(UNAME), Darwin)
   # This configuration assumes you have setup your 10.X.X system like
   # Red Emerald in this thread:
   #    https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=73648.msg976015#msg976015
    # The makefile updates he shows are already tied into this if/else branch
   SWIG_INC     += -I"/usr/include/python$(PYVER)"
   STATICPYTHON +=   "/usr/lib/python$(PYVER)/config/libpython$(PYVER).a"
else
   SWIG_INC     += -I"$(DEPSDIR)/include/python$(PYVER)"
   STATICPYTHON +=   "$(DEPSDIR)/lib/libpython$(PYVER).a"

endif
291  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: September 15, 2012, 06:48:40 PM
I got the threading branch built on OSX without any difficulty.  I'll update the brew tap after I do some more testing.

I've gotten a couple errors and a few things don't seem to be working properly.

Code:
...

My dashboard says "Armory is online!" however the bottom corner still says "Offline."

If I click "Offline Transcations" the "Create New Offline Transaction" button is greyed out.  If I click the Transactions tab, no transactions show up.  If I click "Wallet Properties" the transactions are listed.  I'm pretty sure this is because my bitcoind is behind by a week or so.

If I click "Send Bitcoins" it gives me an error saying "Armory is currently scanning..."  Maybe it should say "Armory is scanning!" on the dashboard.

I'll post more once I get bitcoind up to date.

Ack!  Threading branch is not ready!  Don't use it!

And of course after I posted yesterday, I ran into a seg fault with the address book.  Strange...  but I've been struggling to get that fixed (I'm not as close to a testing release as I thought...)

I meant for the previous post to be a teaser, not a notification.  I still have quite a bit of functionality left to sort out -- it's nothing compared to the multi-threading infrastructure, but still not enough to be usable yet.

P.S. -- But thanks, RE, for being so proactive about helping me test!  I really do need the help testing, it's just not quite ready yet Smiley

I did build the threading branch to test.  I realize it isn't production ready.  I guess I should have said, "I'll update the brew tap after more testing/fixes by etotheipi."

Any chance the OSX cppforswig makefile changes are merged into master?  If they are, I'll update my tap to that.
292  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Building Armory on OSX on: September 15, 2012, 05:24:34 AM
I'm testing the threaded branch on my own machine.  It built without issue for me and is easy to run with "PYTHONPATH=`brew --prefix`/lib/python2.7/site-packages /usr/bin/python ArmoryQt.py"

Once I'm happy with the stability, I'll switch my brew tap to it.

If you are itching to try out the bleeding edge: https://github.com/WyseNynja/BitcoinArmory/tree/threading

You probably need to update your command line tools.  Open up Xcode > Preferences > Downloads.  I've compiled on Mountain Lion.  Also, maybe run `brew doctor` and see if it says anything.
Yup that was it... I didn't realize that the OS upgrade would un-install them.

Thanks for everything Red Emerald
Well it leaves them installed, but I think they are all compiled for Lion which has older versions of a lot of things and so won't work.

Glad I could help!
295  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Building Armory on OSX on: September 06, 2012, 03:56:28 AM
It's in https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-versions

Code:
brew tap homebrew/versions
brew install wysenynja/bitcoin/bitcoind
Thanks... I added it but now I am getting a compile error for it (berkeley-db4):
Code:
libtool: compile:  /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Toolchains/XcodeDefault.xctoolchain/usr/bin/clang -c -I. -I../dist/.. -isysroot /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.8.sdk -Os -w -pipe -march=native -Qunused-arguments -mmacosx-version-min=10.8 -isysroot /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.8.sdk -fno-strict-aliasing ../dist/../libdb_java/db_java_wrap.c  -fno-common -DPIC -o .libs/db_java_wrap.o
../dist/../libdb_java/db_java_wrap.c:137:10: fatal error: 'jni.h' file not found
#include <jni.h>
         ^
1 error generated.

I have my feelings that it is due to upgrading to Mt. Lion this weekend, has anyone else compiled this on Mt. Lion?
The new version thing is a bug.  I am waiting for etotheipi to merge some changes and then I will switch the formula to his repo.

You probably need to update your command line tools.  Open up Xcode > Preferences > Downloads.  I've compiled on Mountain Lion.  Also, maybe run `brew doctor` and see if it says anything.
296  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Building Armory on OSX on: September 04, 2012, 04:32:03 AM
So I made this super simple for people.  I'm sure etotheipi will eventually do this himself, but if you want Armory up and running fast and right now.

Code:
brew tap WyseNynja/bitcoin
brew install wysenynja/bitcoin/bitcoind
brew install --HEAD wysenynja/bitcoin/armory-qt

You don't need to install bitcoind, but I like to. I might eventually add a startup service for bitcoind.
Just tried to get an updated version of bitcoind from your forumula and got this error:
Code:
$ brew install bitcoind
Error: No available formula for berkeley-db4 (dependency of bitcoind)

Did you do a keg for that from somewhere?

Btw, I finally removed bsddb, so that dependency should be gone...

Though, in the future, I might add it back if the devs don't move on this new wallet format.  Luckily, I am pretty sure they won't be using BSDDB for the new wallet format, but if they procrastinate much longer past when I get compressed public keys, I might have to do this.
But this is for bitcoind.... doesn't that still depend on BDB?

It's in https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-versions

Code:
brew tap homebrew/versions
brew install wysenynja/bitcoin/bitcoind

I saw that error on my own system, but building with the proper libpython2.7.a is what fixed it.

After fixing the symlinks, did you reinstall, or did you just try to rerun the command? You will need to uninstall and install again.

I installed from red emerald hombrew formula so I am not sure whIch branch it is.
My formula is pointing to the dev branch.  Using the master branch doesn't work because the mac checks are not merged into cppForSwig/Makefile.  Did you miss those by accident, etotheipi?

I also put up a pull request that makes your makefile accept a custom $DESTDIR properly and adds some stuff to help with mac development, but it might be better to just make these changes manually in your master branch.

Hrm...  So I was able to receive and send funds.  I imported a bunch of addresses (~15) and restarted... now Armory has been loading for >20 mins.....

Any ideas as to what could be causing the slowdown?

EDIT:  40 mins in and it just switched to blk0002.dat.  This sucks,  it is like using a 5 year old PC on a mac.  There has to be some reason for the slowdown.
What are your system specs? What OS version? Latest dev branch?

My load times aren't nearly that bad, but I'm on a SSD.
