Yep. Bummer that I got such a good deal--not sure why everyone feels its necessary to pipe in and tell me what I already know.  Q6700 and Q6600 have lower core frequency yes-but also a lower cost across the board.  I will never pay that much for a processor that is 2/3 sockets out of date, hyped up or not it is very old hat.  I'm looking to get some motherboards updated--not really throw money around for that last bit of performance.
To be clear, I wasn't trying to argue that the Q9550 was a good deal at that price.  I was just identifying the fact that the higher end stuff still goes for a LOT more than the mid or lower end.
2822  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scammer tag: PatrickHarnett on: November 08, 2012, 05:26:05 PM
You transferred 500 Bitcoins to Patrick and did not require a signed contract to secure or to determine both parties obligations? Is that the way you handle your stock exchange business?

If you think an IRC log represents a legitimate contract, you have completely failed.
You need to read up on contract law then.  Anything written can count as a valid contract.  Heck, even a verbal or handshake agreement can be a contract, and enforceable in court.  The only thing that needs to be done is the contract has to be proven.  IRC logs can server that purpose, as can emails, recorded telephone conversations, etc.

The only thing an official signed contract does is makes it easier to enforce, especially when it comes to the nitty-gritty details.  But from what was said in IRC, this is easily an enforceable contract in which Patrick promised to pay back interest on a loan, and has failed to do so.

Unless Patrick repays the loan, he absolutely SHOULD be called a scammer.  He has an obligation to pay, because he said he would.

i think you got a good deal on that c2q. I sold my c2q on ebay 2 months ago and I got $166 for it. Thats something like 15 bitcoins. Saint mightve been better off selling it piecemeal since people want some customization and not a bunch of junk they dont want.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 GHz Quad-Core (AT80569PJ073N) Processor (#271024719613)   US $165.97
That's a way better C2Q than the Q6600 though.  Those Q9550's have always been valued significantly higher.

There better not be a heat issue when they've got those sexy heatsinks on the boards Tongue
Depends on how level the 8 chips are ...
^^^ This.  It will be very tricky to get all 8 chips the same height and in the same plane.  We have had similar issues with heatsinks not making good contact w/ multiple chips.  This could be a big issue for BFL.  But at the (low) power levels BFL is predicting, it may be less of an issue.
They're using thermal pads, so probably not much of a problem.

I am relatively certain the only one who agrees with Joel in this thread is Joel.
2828  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Lowest block hash? on: November 08, 2012, 12:00:44 AM
Does anyone know what the lowest block hash in the blockchain is?  The one with the most zeroes before it?

Just curious, this isn't for anything truly useful.

Show me proof that someone can create a storm out of nothing, then direct the path and strength of it, and maybe I'll believe you.
2830  Economy / Lending / Re: [WANTED] $2650 Loan @ 18% on: November 07, 2012, 08:39:19 PM
No problem.

(Off Topic: those "wild interest rates" dont come out of nowhere Smiley Alot of fraud happens, especially in bitcoinland, with the limited possibilities to verify identities or persecute someone... High risks come with high rates)
Right, which is why I offered to comply with identification requests, etc.

Turns out my prosper loan rate is 9.74%... not bad!  I think I'll just go that route instead.

Thankfully, we can avoid smelling it for at least a few more years here in Oregon.  I was getting scared there for a bit...

Oh, please. Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's going to be everywhere. Anyone who wanted to was already doing it, now they just don't have to worry about going to jail for it. Should cut back on the paranoia.
*shrug*  I don't like the smell.  And I disagree that anyone who wanted to do it was already doing it.  Legalization will certainly increase usage, especially in public areas.

Has anyone studied the effects of secondhand marijuana smoke?
Firsthand or secondhand, there's no harmful effects from smoking weed.
Doesn't it kill braincells or something, or was that just FUD?

+1, you know I knew a person once who would snoop around people's facebook accounts and decide whether she want's to hire them.
Fairly common practice these days.  That's why anyone with facebook should set their profile as private (and completely so - none of the "friends of friends" nonsense) when job hunting.  It's not illegal if they see something that they believe could hinder your performance, and that includes excessive partying, getting high, etc.

I think that's called "contact high" Wink
Lol, excellent.

On the upside, at least this will cut into cartel profits.  Of course, they'll probably just push more of the harder stuff now.

But at least the vast majority of drug users won't be exposed to and offered those harder drugs when buying their weed.
A very valid point as well.

Someone tried making a service almost exactly like that before, TalkingAntColony.  It wasn't very popular.  Who knows, maybe if it was done today, it would be popular?
2837  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ANN] Hardware wallet project on: November 07, 2012, 04:36:55 PM
How about we reduce the "talking" between the wallet and the computer as much as possible?

In contrary to chipTAN, we need bi-directional communication between wallet and the computer. There are some possibilities like communicating with QR codes, but both device and computer needs a camera. I'm not aware of any other usable interface than USB, and plugging USB into the computer is like having an unprotected intercourse. It is perfect for the most of the time, but it's never 100% safe :-(.

I can imagine some workaround solutions which will skip the USB requirement, but everything will affect usability in significant way. I still think that there's no simple solution and the advice "don't connect untrusted gadgets to your computer" will work for the best in the real world.
Thanks for that. Now I'm going to think of that every time I go to plug in anything via USB.

On another note, Windows XP patched to SP3 also has autorun disabled.  But I agree - build the security for the lowest common denominator or the device will fail.
2838  Economy / Lending / Re: [WANTED] $2650 Loan @ 18% on: November 07, 2012, 04:28:08 PM
Yes, that would be far too much!  Not quite as bad as a payday loan, but close...  Wink  I realize my offer is uninteresting to most people, especially given the wild interest rates often thrown around here, so I wasn't truly expecting someone to fulfill this loan.  I do have one interested party, though we haven't been able to make contact yet.  I'd rather just get a loan through prosper if I was going to do anything more than 25% APR.... likely, I could get a loan through them for around 10%, but I would rather have the caveat of not having to pay until my first batch of singles arrives.  And it wouldn't already be in Bitcoins = inconvenient.  And it would take 7 days to fund my bank account.

Anyway, enough rambling.  I haven't done loans with anyone here before.  I do have a regular income, as stated in my OP.  I do have a few other liabilities, which I would be willing to share with an interested party.  And I would promise to cover the money with my personal funds/income in the event of a BFL failure to deliver or BTC price drop to 0.
2839  Other / Off-topic / Re: ACTUAL Butterfly Labs PCB pics! on: November 07, 2012, 07:08:15 AM
I'm surprised that BFL didn't get better efficiency than they did. Just going from 90nm to 65nm should double efficiency, right? Then where's the additional advantage of using the full custom approach? I'm comparing with the current power estimate of the bASIC.
The 1w/gh is a conservative estimate.  They are expecting lower power usage than that.
2840  Other / Off-topic / Re: ACTUAL Butterfly Labs PCB pics! on: November 07, 2012, 05:39:44 AM
Can someone from BFL please clarify if at this moment their ASICs are packaged and delivered to the US?
"Josh Zerlan, a BFL representative, expects to have chips in hand by the end of November and begin initial shipments shortly after."
