2821  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Philosophy on: May 19, 2016, 08:30:03 PM
Used to presume foolishly that most people where drawn to bitcoin for the same reason as myself.
Being that we could potentially grow outside the current system and not be forced into regulation or submitting to the banks.
This seems to have given way to people that will do anything to bitcoin that excels the price and are coming from it in a investment aspect.
So are there less people today than the start of bitcoin that where more anti government or the percentages the same today as then?

Was going to add a poll but rather let the posts speak for the issue.

Lets discuss this...

I've noticed, since my long absence from the board, all that anti gov rhetoric has died way down. I still see the same pro privacy sentiment, but it seems the idealism that surrounded this in the beginning has lost a bit of its steam. You live, learn and pay taxes, then realize that if you live in the territory a particular government controls, you should go with the flow or gtfo. The majoriity of btc holders are holding it speculatively, I saw that because I challenge the community to find enough bitcoin accepting merchants to support a family on. I tried. Spoiler, you end up converting it to fiat. Bitcoin is an excellent idea, it's just not fiat. The thing that is synonymous with money. We aren't going to reinvent what money means to a global culture in a single generation.
2822  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Theymos: “Bitcoins Belonging to Satoshi Should Be Destroyed” on: May 19, 2016, 08:20:21 PM
But in the actual example, the only coins affected are those that have been for all practical purposes abandoned - and WILL be stolen.

Bull-fucking-shit. You ('you' being anyone or any group of people) have absolutely no way of knowing whether or not those coins are abandoned. You also have no way of knowing when or even if they will be stolen.

Again, in case you are still blind to the moral principle, the only person who has a legitimate claim on managing the risk is the owner of the coins themselves. Any lesser standard is simply theft.

If you have a mic, it needs to be dropped.

Nope.

As I understood it, in the scenario Theymos outlined, QC technology has reached a point where it is apparent the existing bitcoin protocol WILL be compromised. So a hard fork is developed that will be QC-resistant. Everyone is asked to take action (moving coins in some fashion) into the new QC-resistant haven. Those who do not are leaving their coins where they will become vulnerable to theft using the new QC technology.

So the claim that "You have absolutely no way of knowing whether or not those coins are abandoned" is not accurate. Clearly they _are_ abandoned at this point, by the failure to take action to keep or safeguard the coins. You can't dump cash on a busy street, drive away, and still claim ownership in any meaningful sense.

By rejecting Theymos' suggestion, all you will be achieving is leaving some fraction of all bitcoins available for the first people with the QC technology to sweep up all the loose coins at will. You won't be saving them from evil devs. You will just be losing them to thieves. And then everyone else with bitcoin suffers as the market collapses from the shock of such stupidity in allowing this to happen.

Thank you sir. I concur, and your sentence structure is excellent. Also, as per you last post, I applaud you for making your motivations clear. If everyone on the board did this, the shill/disinformation paradigm would vanish overnight.

We can not protect these coins, and suffer the consequences as a whole, or we can take preventative measures, and mitigate the harm to a select few, obviously negligent actors at this point.

Would you starve due to the negligence of your brother? I am all for helping another in need, but when that need is self imposed, when does one limit their own exposure to another's poor situation?
2823  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum is in an artificial bubble on: May 19, 2016, 08:05:36 PM
Even knowing it's a bubble you can still make money,  and the thing is that you don't know how long momentum is going to be in the up direction.  Could be for a while.

Yes, telling people invest in this risky project so IPO buyers can make a fortune. Deceiving people should be made illegal.

I also made small profit. I mined the Ethereum when the price was about $0.8-$1.0. I sold all my coins at $1.4.

Your profit is too small. If you hold until today, you can even make bigger profit. But who knows future.

No, it's not. Some people don't have the appetite for risk that the less experienced investors on this board display. Warren Buffet would bite out your throat for a chance at 40-60 percent returns. Better a bird in your hand than two in the Bush.
2824  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Eth will skyrocket the next days on: May 19, 2016, 08:00:49 PM
Just wondering what will happen to Eth price when DAO starts investing and all that Eth it took in is sold for fiat to support various projects. It just seems odd that the DAO drove up price significantly to only drive it down as soon as actual funds are needed.  Should be an interesting ride.

Yezzir. People will grow to understand that when profit is taken, ie the guys that brought the price from .015 to this current level (double) decide to cash out. If you were risking precious capital to feed your family /organization with the profits, at what point would you get off the train? Because 2x returns sounds like a great fucking point if you ask me.I didn't buy this because it seemed an incomplete idea, an essay if you will, now I regret not perceiving my brothers greed so that I might have capitalized off of it myself. But maybe better to let this dog lie.
2825  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why would anyone buy this DAO crap? on: May 19, 2016, 07:50:35 PM

This is the big #2 proposal that is driving DAO lemmings-jump-off-the-cliff-and-drown-in-the-sea mass suicide.

It's almost impossible to exaggerate how retarded this is...
Or how blockchain unsuitable maintaining fleets of cars is (why stop here, let's manage an airline with Solidity code).

Would you put someone you care about into this contraption?

And as for the claims of instant profits, sorry, no free lunch...
You can withdraw your ETH at 100 DAO per ETH... if you paid 1.5 ETH per 100 you will take a 50% loss.

I suspect that >>> 50% of the DAO investments will be pulled out within weeks...
But the SuperBubble masters will have succeded in popping ETH by 50% in the last month.

Please note that all that heavy buying... is matched by heavy selling and profit taking.
.

What, in the blue fuck, is that? Dammit people, the blockchain can't solve every fucking thing. That's a toy as far as I'm concerned, pardon my ignorance if I have failed to see the use case for a robotic power wheel.

There are too many vastly superior companies making autonomous EVs. And a blockchain is wholly unnecessary, why does there need to be a ledger of the rentals?

Do you care who rented the red box end before you did? Do the shareholders care? Does anyone honestly care?
2826  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is The DAO going to be "Dead on Arrival" ? on: May 19, 2016, 07:46:24 PM

Well, looks like somebody will be getting screwed somewhere down the line.  They will likely just go after that Slock.it guy since he was the "curator" and then notorious altcoin scammer Butalik.

Here's the concern:  if you don't formalize a legal structure for a human-created entity, courts will impose one for you.  As most lawyers will tell you:  a general partnership, unless properly formalized or a deliberately created structure, is a Very Bad Thing

That's interesting but can that apply to crypto??

All crypto assets are technically securities. I shit you not. when you ask some one for money and promise them returns, it's a security. The SEC thinks so at least.
2827  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum Pump on: May 18, 2016, 09:29:13 PM
It will be interesting to see the effect of the block halving on bitcoin and ethereum.

My prediction is that there will be a BTC dump/ETH pump at halving, because people will be disappointed that BTC price has not doubled!
 Wink  Wink  Wink

And then, shortly after, the other way around!
 Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy

This is an interesting idea my friend. Although I see eth taking a dive right before the halving as well, then quickly recovering as btc downtrends.

Thank you again, I hadn't considered this. Going to chew on it a bit.

2828  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is The DAO going to be "Dead on Arrival" ? on: May 18, 2016, 09:24:41 PM
Most of the early investors do not want to hold the ICO stake for long. They are wanting fast profits. Most will sell immediately after the new coin has hit the exchanges. So, I agree with you. It is not a substainable investment.

I think a lot of "gimme cash upfront" projects will fail this year

Yezzir. Not being pessimistic, but I feel a lot of folks are only along for the first part of this ride. Look at the ETSY ipo for example. The early vc taking profit ruined the price, it took a while to recover. ETSY is an established company with a viable product that has proven value. This DAO is a great concept, but rather ambigous for such a large valuation.

LOL this thread went sideways fast

Yes, yes the fuck it did. Put down the hatchet guys. I don't know what roach was talking about with the bts shit, I'm not sure what a bts is to be honest, nor could I give a fuck. but he's an alright guy atm, a bit paranoid but not too much so, and he's at least trying to raise some valid concerns with this. Not picking sides, not making enemies either, but let's keep the past in the past and focus on this possible train wreck lumbering towards us  Wink

2831  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Theymos: “Bitcoins Belonging to Satoshi Should Be Destroyed” on: May 16, 2016, 10:16:21 PM
You're defending the soundness of "let's destroy early coins" idea purely as an intellectual exercise, to practice your sophistry chops?

No, he's doing it to spam threads with his sig campaign.

yep anyone with a sig campaign should never have a say in big things. after all if they are penny pinching by making a below minimal income from sig campaigns then they obviously have no large stash themselves. so to even suggest that they should burn someone elses million coins is more of a jealous attitude then a logical attitude.

until there is actually a QC protected algo, there is no point even talking about moving or destroying coins.so i see the only motivations theymos and lauda have are pure jealousy of those richer than themselves

Maaan, I get so tired of folks hating on post because there is a signature attached to the bottom of it. For those that this truly bothers (why someone else earning income is a bother is beyond me), simply press the "ignore " button on those "poor quality posts" that stick so deeply up your collective butts.

And consider a job as a meter maid or a tow truck driver. Noble professions, not knocking them, but you guys would be perfect for the work.

Thank you, Franky. That needed to be said. Although I think Theymos has been extremely misunderstood /misquoted in this. I must say, I agree with the concept (securing legacy coins via some protocol should the security paradigm change). But I never agree with fooling with other people's shit, which isn't the deal here once you get past the misquote.
2832  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Which Super Cheap Coin is best to invest in? on: May 16, 2016, 10:05:36 PM
Out of the following, which one has the most potential to increase in value and popularity:

BUN - BunnyCoin

CAGE - CageCoin

GCN - GCoin

HTML5 - HTMLCoin

NYC - NewYorkCoin

PAC - PacCoin

Also, if anyone has an informed view on any other super cheap Coins that look to do very well, please by all means suggest😊

I'm not wasting brain cells on researching some of these, but you can cross BUN and NYC coin off your list. A silly ass name, to me, represents a silly as development team with no marketing team on board. These coins are brands for the most part, marketing is arguably more important than the actual technology behind the product, sadly  Sad
2833  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ether in unlimited supply? on: May 16, 2016, 10:00:17 PM

The question is ether unlimited in supply? If so it undermines the whole point of Bitcoin and further conforms my fears that Ethereum is the elites response to Bitcoin. What the central banks need as well as the banks is an expandable supply, does Ethereum give them that?

Since the "gas" concept burns tokens (I think , or does it redistribute them to miners), it seems they will have to create new coins eventually. On top of that, the banks would not be clamoring over a non inflationary currency. Where's the fun in that?

" It's gonna get added to Polo soon!!!! "

This would scare the shit out of me actually, if I was holding.

If you build it, they will come. And dump.
2835  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The DAO questions on: May 16, 2016, 09:49:05 PM
where did 100 million come from? That's a lot of dough for an ico. Any why didn't eth jump way up in price if 100million worth of eth spent?

My thoughts exactly. If I were going to fund a "vc melting pot", I'd rather hold my equity until said proposal was made, not beforehand, and then invest . Seems like you have to promise money to a thing that isn't real yet. Like paying income tax and waiting until uncle Sam decides to send back the remainder. The opportunity cost seems too high.

Disclosure: not invested in this, interested, but need to hear some compelling arguments.
2836  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Leaked : this is going to be a huge pump once released on: May 16, 2016, 09:44:51 PM
Okcoin has a majority Asian user base, right? Aren't there other Asian exchanges with eth currently on platform? Not asking to be a dick/troll, serious question that I didnt feel like googling at the moment. If so, will this cause any price movement at all? There are also a multitude of American majority user base platforms with this pair listed.
2837  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Secret Information via Blockchain? on: May 16, 2016, 09:32:31 PM
Short Question:

Alice and Bob want to tranfer a secret letter. How can they transfer the information with the use of the blockchain?

Thanks!

this isnt the best method (mem limits), but yes, there are services like the aforementioned that can embed messages in the blockchain.

with that being said, much easier to publically blast a coded message (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_station) or send an encrypted message. Hiding in plain site isn't the best choice for information that is highly sensitive.
2838  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: It is time to question Poloniex market manipulation on: May 16, 2016, 09:07:18 PM
I'm not an expert in trading.
is wash trading illegal on its own or is it illegal only when is used to evade taxes?

Yes, if involving securities (legally these are securities), any attempt to defraud shareholders of value is illegal (this would be considered price manipulation). There is no doubt in my mind the volume is artificial, people in this space forget a single person in the real world with money could damn near buy up an orderbook . These markets don't have very large caps compared with regulated markets that state actors participate in.

Look at the doge chart on polo. Looks like a goddamned ekg.
2839  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / The Slock.it Token Sale on: May 16, 2016, 08:46:14 PM
So, I've just recently come to the party concerning the DAO token sale concerning slock.it.  If I'm understanding correctly, slock.it primarily produces their "smart lock" product, a lock that can apparently be unlocked via blockchain. Now, with no salt, I think this is a great idea, but it seems like this could be solved by too many existing technologies (paying for an otp to be sent to your device to use as an unlock code for example). Which leads me to the other side of this virtual coin , the DAO.

Now, the overarching concept is just fucking grand. The idea of blockchain demonstrable shareholder voting and asset transfer sans exchange makes me hard a bit. But, the profit generation scheme to me seems to be non existent. So, this ridiculous amount of money is going to be invested into various startups , which is cool, but at the moment there isn't really that much innovation in the space that brings value to the consumer, that is, providing a new service, or an existing service more efficiently. I also have concerns about the voting aspect. As we have seen with countless other systems of share based voting, there will be x individuals (x is usually equal to ten or less) that control the majority of the votes and subsequently, will have their wills exercised in the voting process. The "corporate voting for the people" warm fuzzy feeling that comes with this kind of dies with that revelation.  What happens when factions form and there is dissent among the top share holders (kinda like the block size issue here at home)?

This brings about the issue of governance. The majority can not be trusted to simply "select" winning investments because the public is not an expert. A million uneducated opinions does not a cogent decision make. Democracy is cool, but you will notice the most popular money making assets are not governed in this way (see Google and Apple). Sure, you may have a grip of shares, but you never have as many as the founder or the company principles, which is the point. It's their million dollar baby. So they will coddle it, and feed it until it can walk on its own or falls on its face.

So, I may invest in this because like everything in this sphere, people are chomping at the bits to throw money at it, and beyond the shadow of a doubt the price will increase before it decreases. With that being said, I dont have confidence in this asset long term as I fail to see a clearly defined plan of profit, and this asset is entirely too overhyped, which I think will cause unnecessary volatilty. What do you guys think? No one line cheerleading responses please, and no basement dwelling trolls. Am I being too pessimistic in my appraisal of the voting process? Do you think there will be projects worth even funding (slock.it would not get my money if it was an exchange traded stock).

I'm all ears Smiley
2840  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Announcing the Thunder Network Alpha Release on: May 16, 2016, 05:07:55 PM
Still waiting for this to pan out a little more, but if this is true/works, I bet raising the blocksize won't be such an issue to the Asian mining conglomerate anymore. They will have to adapt to survive, and the fees should drift down a bit in the spirit of market competition.

Good job Smiley
