2821  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Help btc,eth wallets on: December 24, 2021, 03:21:36 PM
For example, if the user adds $100 to his ETH account and only withdraws $70, after a $20 commission, he is left with $10 on his account that he will never get to use.
You don't have to give the 70 dollars worth of ethereum from the address the user has deposited to. You can use the fund other users have deposited to process one's withdrawal.
Centralized exchanges usually move all the funds to their own wallet and use the fund in that wallet for processing withdrawals.
2822  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How easy would it be to fake transactions? on: December 23, 2021, 02:14:12 PM
There is also the even less likely Finney attack...........
It's the first time I've heard of such attack.
That pre-mined block can't really increase the chance of the success of the attacker very much. Am I right?

Let's say I have control over addresses A and B and I am a miner.
I make a transaction from address A to address B in transaction A and include it in a block. I don't broadcast that block.
Now, I double-spend same UTXO(s) from address A to address C in transaction B and broadcast it.

Although the block including transaction A hasn't been broadcast yet, it's still very unlikely that the transaction B can enter the mempool of the node address C owner is connected to. Because the transaction B has been broadcast later than transaction A.

Edit:
I should keep the transaction A in my own mempool and don't broadcast that before broadcasting the block including that. Right?
In this way, other nodes won't flag transaction B as a double-spend attack and it can enter their mempool.
2823  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Got sent btc to armory wallet while it was offline. on: December 23, 2021, 08:43:30 AM
............or there's still spaces.
As shown in the following image, even if there are extra spaces in the private key you import, that shouldn’t be a problem and electrum would still allow you to click on "Next" button.
In that case, electrum would ignore the spaces and creates the wallet.

2824  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Got sent btc to armory wallet while it was offline. on: December 22, 2021, 10:23:39 PM
You'll probably need to click Options and select Bip39, like in this image:
I don't think that's the problem. Armory doesn't support seed phrase at all and CSTEK7148 should deal with private key(s).

To CSTEK7148:
You have probably imported a wrong private key.

Look at the image below.
You should copy-paste the key in front of PrivBase58. Nothing more and nothing less.

2825  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transfer tokens from a public address in BSC on: December 21, 2021, 02:27:47 PM
So, you are referring to an address with a leaked private key.

BSC Address 0x6813Eb9362372EEF6200f3b1dbC3f819671cBA69
The fee required to be paid for moving those tokens seems be higher than their value. Also, even if someone moves those tokens, I doubt there's any exchange accepts such small deposits. So, they are not worth it and that's why no one is interested in them.

Anyway, if you want to move those tokens, you can do nothing to stop those bots and must be faster than them.
2826  Other / Meta / Re: Curious error received while reporting posts on: December 21, 2021, 10:38:01 AM
I don't know if that's the case about reporting, but that's where I'd start with.
I don't think that's the problem.
For testing, I just ignored "Altcoin Discussion" board and reported a few posts on that board.
I didn't get that error and I was able to report the posts.

The error message you are encountering will likely mean that a moderator has already deleted the post in question.
This is the only thing that comes to my mind. But GazetaBitcoin said that the post hadn't been deleted when reporting it.

Seeing that, I thought that maybe the error was received as the respective post was already deleted -- but that was not the case though.
2827  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transfer tokens from a public address in BSC on: December 21, 2021, 10:09:31 AM
But if the address is public, bots check it and upon receipt of funds they immediately steal BNB.....
What do you mean by "if the address is public"?
All addresses are public and can be seen on explorers.

And what do you mean by bots?
No one steal your BNB when you make a transaction.
The BNB deducted from your balance is used for paying the transaction fee and that's inevitable.

Can you somehow indicate in one transaction that these funds are used to pay the commission and in the same transaction make a transfer of other tokens from this address?
Are you saying that you want to pay the transaction fee in another token, not in BNB?
If so, that's not possible. You have to pay the fee in BNB.
2828  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sent BTC: Binance to Trezor- Completed status however no coins on: December 18, 2021, 10:17:48 PM
.........all automatically and in the background without giving a warning explaining what is going on?
Yes.
They give the user tokens that are generated out of the thin air without telling them that's not bitcoin.
See their guide on how to withdraw from binance.
They don't say anything about the difference between networks at all.

The only warning is:
Quote
Please make sure that the selected network is the same as the network of the platform you are withdrawing funds from or depositing funds to. If you select the wrong network, you will lose your funds.

A newbie reading this guide will surely think that there are four kinds of bitcoin networks.

And let's not touch on the fact that Binance are still charging 50,000 sats for a transaction which costs them a few hundred.
That's also a means of encouraging people to use their fake networks.

So you are saying that provided OP's friend definitely gave a bitcoin address to Binance, it would have been impossible for him to withdraw to one of the other networks?
Yes.

So why then in OP's first post does he say Binance said coins were withdrawn on the wrong network?
That can't be true.

To make sure about this, I just selected BSC network and entered a bitcoin address.

The network was automatically changed to BTC.

As I already said, sending bitcoin on a wrong chain is possible only if you use ERC20 or BSC networks. Because they have same address format.
2829  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sent BTC: Binance to Trezor- Completed status however no coins on: December 18, 2021, 08:28:45 PM
If, when withdrawing bitcoin you can only withdraw it using the bitcoin network and not with their made up shitcoin networks, then why even show the made up shitcoin networks if not to deliberately confuse people?
They allow users to withdraw bitcoin on any of available networks.

When you buy bitcoin on binance, you buy bitcoin. It's not that you can buy real bitcoin, ERC20 bitcoin, BSC bitcoin, etc. There's only one option when buying bitcoin.
When you withdraw bitcoin, there are four networks. One of them is BTC and the other three one are their fake coins.

If you select BSC, BNB or ETH as the network and enter a bitcoin address, due to the difference in addresses format, you cannot withdraw.

Look at the image below.
It shows how they deceive people to use their fake coins.

Many people prefer to withdraw fake coins instead of bitcoin without knowing they won't receive real bitcoin.
They think in this way they can get discount for withdrawal fee. So, they create a wallet supporting those shitcoins and make a withdrawal to that.
2830  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sent BTC: Binance to Trezor- Completed status however no coins on: December 18, 2021, 05:05:38 PM
Sending bitcoin to a wrong chain is possible only when dealing with BSC and ERC20 networks.
Addresses on binance Chain start with bnb. Addresses on ethereum network (ERC20) and addresses on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) start with 0x.

Since the transaction has been made to an address starting with bc1 (a real bitcoin address), it's impossible that the transaction has been made on a wrong chain.
In the case of using a wrong chain, you should get an error.
2831  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Public vs. private keys on: December 16, 2021, 05:27:50 PM
What I've seen is that, to transfer your coins from your exchange wallet to your software wallet, you use your software wallet's public key, and to transfer funds from your software wallet to your exchange's wallet, you use the exchange wallet's public key.
For making any bitcoin transaction, whether it's made to a wallet or to an exchange, you need the recipient's address.
Note that although the recipient's address can be derived from the public key, but you always need to enter the address when making a transaction. I don't think there's any wallet or exchange accepting public keys when making a transaction.

Basically meaning you can keep your funds safe by never using your software wallet's private key. Do you need both?
Your private key is used only when you want to make a transaction from a non-custodial wallet.
As long as you don't intend to spend bitcoin from your non-custodial wallet, you don't need your private key.

Note that if you want your wallet to be 100% secure, you should create it on an air-gap device (a device which has been always offline and will never be online).
2832  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Public vs. private keys on: December 16, 2021, 04:41:23 PM
I feel you don't know how an exchange work.
You need to know the difference between an exchange and a non-custodial wallet.

If you hold your bitcoin on a non-custodial wallet, you have full control over your fund. If you want to make a transaction, your wallet needs your private key to sign the transaction.
If you want to withdraw a fund from the exchange, you don't need any private key. Because you are not the one who makes the transaction. You request the exchange to make a transaction and the transaction is signed by the exchange not you. In this case, the private key is owned by the exchange.

Your bitcoin address is what you need to receive bitcoin.
Let's say you want to send me bitcoin. I give you my bitcoin address and you send me bitcoin.

NeuroticFish, you say you use your address, not your public key,  but cygan says both are the same?
Your bitcoin address is different from your public key, but any one who has your public key can derive your address.
Any private key generates a public key and the address is generated by that public key.

public key = Bitcoin adress
Bitcoin adress = public key
Any bitcoin address is a hash of a public key.
2833  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Need Help for transaction fees on: December 15, 2021, 04:33:46 PM
Cancel the previous transaction with small fee.
No transaction has been broadcast and there isn't any to be cancelled.

Also, even if a transaction has been broadcast with a low gas price and you want to accelerate it, you shouldn't cancel it and make a new one. Because in this way, you will have to pay fee for 2 transactions.
You should make a new transaction which replaces the stuck transaction.
2834  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Need Help for transaction fees on: December 15, 2021, 03:53:39 PM
As the error message suggests, you don't have enough ethereum to pay the transaction fee.
Given the current condition of ethereum network, that 1.5 dollar worth of ethereum you have in your wallet isn't enough.

You have no other option than sending more ethereum to the address holding those tokens.

In addition to TryNinja and giammangiato's bots that were mentioned by jackg in the above post, there are two other tools that can be used for getting notifications when someone quotes a post made by you.

[new topic]LoyceV's notification bot (Created by LoyceV)
[TELEGRAM]Bitcointalk Notifier |merit and quotes| push notifications | telegram (Created by hatshepsut93)
2836  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Any problem BSC NETWORK? on: December 14, 2021, 10:23:20 PM
So what is the hack Or maintenance problem?
Their website may have been hacked.

Below is the announcement they made on their twitter a few minutes ago.

https://twitter.com/CoinMarketCap/status/1470876283924094983

Edit:
Seems that everything is normal now.
The prices are being shown correctly now.
2837  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Funds not showing up on: December 14, 2021, 08:18:21 AM
Then use 'search' (CTRL+F) and paste the receiving address to see if it will appear in the address list.
I don't think bc1qn379.... is OP's own address.

The address has already received 51 transactions. It has received 14 transactions only in the past 24 hours.
If the address was owned by OP, he/she wouldn't have sent any more fund to it.

My guess is that OP has been scammed.
2838  Other / Meta / Re: Importance Of Merit Sources || Why do we need merit Source? on: December 13, 2021, 08:21:48 PM
Right. But, As far I know we have 111 Merit sources only.
There are 111 merit sources with a total merit generation of up to 34139 sMerit per 30 days. [Ref.]
I think that's enough.

it's been a long time since theymos didn't add any new merit sources.
The last time theymos appointed new merit sources was July 5.
Number of merit sources increased from 97 to 111 and total number of source merits generated per 30 days increased from 21171 to 34139.
2839  Other / Meta / Re: Importance Of Merit Sources || Why do we need merit Source? on: December 13, 2021, 08:01:43 PM
Yeah, Merit HoDLers is the reason. That's why we need merit Sources
Not only that.
In the case we don't have any merit source, we would still face lack of merit even if all users spend all their smerit.
Without merit sources, as users get 0.5 smerit for any merit they earn, the total number of merit that are in circulation would gradually decrease to zero.
2840  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core Transactions fees Recommended default on: December 13, 2021, 06:56:08 PM
It may help to zapwallettxes your wallet (of which you should have several backups by now), but I haven't used that command in years so I'm not sure what the current best practice is.
The zapwallettxes option doesn't work anymore. It was removed in the version 0.21.0.

The -zapwallettxes startup option has been removed and its functionality removed from the wallet.

I didn't understand why you recommended using zapwallettxes, but if the purpose is to remove an unconfirmed transaction from your node, should run the wallet without any startup option and use abandontransaction command instead.
