China

China is one of the countries with the strongest restrictions on cryptography; a license is required for export, import, or domestic use of any cryptography product. There are several restrictions on export regulations, and China is not participating in the Wassenaar Arrangement.

So? Mining doesn't do any cryptography.

I agree, but I can see how a bureaucrat might disagree. Most of resources refer to SHA256 as a "cryptographic hash function". Avalon might sneak through, or they might be required to obtain a license - which may take a while.

Can we go back to this and talk about what this means for Avalon importing their products and how it's different than a company shipping from inside the US?

I am now pushing this explanation up to the top of my list of most likely explanations for the delay in shipment updates.

1. Export license paperwork turned out to be more complicated that they thought (if they thought at all).

2. Unanticipated logistic issues with assembly

3. Interpersonal issues within the team, including a rogue and scammy team member

4. The Relic Dealer and his infantry stormed the warehouse, took everyone hostage, and by mistake started mining on one of alt chains

Until there is end-user report from China, any excuse like "customs" or "export license" is just BS

Hello,

Could anyone send me some testnet bitcoins? My address is: ms3aw8X8En9eC1WpersEwkk22DG7v3Ye8A
50 or so would be great
I already mined some of them, but they are still immature... and I guess it will take A LONG TIME before I could play with them.

Thanks!

Sent 12 to you. Send me back later if you have extra, just return to the sending account

I hope they keep their tricks a secret until BFL starts building the PCB's and commits hard money to completing their project.

I doubt at that point any BFL customer will get their cash back.

Josh can correct me if I am wrong about this and tell his customers that they can pull their cash out of this venture at any point (without limitations) prior to shipping.

Even they have legitimate reasons to keep the spec secret, there is absolutely no reason to keep the tracking number secret.
2845  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 26, 2013, 03:17:17 AM
This is starting to smell very, very fishy.
So now... what could be up and what seems most likely.
1 ... , 2 ... , 3 ..., 4 ...

You know, in NONE of these cases their current behaviour makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Whether they are really doing anything real with the units or whether it is a scam of any kind it makes no sense to drop all communications, not answering simple customer queries, not provide any information whatsoever.

Posting pictures does not prove anything so that would be a silly reason to post them. However I cannot imagine any people that would not post at least 10 pictures out of just pure pride of getting the first working ASIC over competition that has tormented them badly for months just to show them that they were outdone.

Even in a case of a scam of any kind or whether they have run into a real problem what they are doing is totally silly and counterproductive to their scam or working out their real problems.
I am simply out of any explanations why they behave like that.

The absolutely only one reasonable explanation that I could come up with is that all ASIC vendors from all the companies involved are made out of some kind of sadists that get their enjoyment of being the most rude in millions of ways and watch when the 'customers' squirm in the hook. The kind of people that rip wings off small insects while jacking off. In my mind the ASIC vendors behaviour is 100x worse than pirate and co. doing permanent damage to the general environment of BTC economy when setting standards how vendors are expected to operate and what is accepted by the community at large. This is the new standard. Go place some more preorders people.

As you said, photos prove nothing. No tracking code is my greatest concern (I did not pre-order)

jesus...this isn't even a retracement.  Its turning into just an isolated dump... bigger then normal but still quickly repurchased

Yep, someone earlier said "its moving out of weak hands into strong hands" and thats exactly right. The days of serious pump and dump are over.

Some coins did move out of weak hands into strong hands (i.e. my hands) in the dump yesterday. I will not consider to sell before 50.
2847  Economy / Currency exchange / I load your BTCChina account, in exchange of your MtGox USD or BTC-E USD on: January 25, 2013, 05:36:41 PM
I will load your BTCChina account, in exchange of your MtGox USD or BTC-E USD

Rate is calculated as follow:

Latest USD/CNY rate at xe.com * 0.975 (current rate = 6.2252 * 0.975 = 6.06957)

For example, if you pay me 100 USD in MtGox code or BTC-E code, I will load 100*6.06957 = 606.96 CNY to your BTCChina account

There is no minimum deposit amount, but 1 CNY is deducted if the amount is below 200 CNY to compensate the extra cost.

PM me or reply here to ensure I have enough funding before you send me anything. I will load your account as soon as I get your USD code. The availability of the funding for trading, however, is up to BTCChina. Based on my experience, their usual office hour is around 11am-6pm China Time (UTC+8), and is closed on Sunday. During office hour, the funding process usually takes 1 to 120 minutes. For deposit out of their office hour, it may take 24 hours (could be 1 hour if you are lucky).

2849  Economy / Speculation / Re: A correction is happening. on: January 25, 2013, 10:39:14 AM
I think it'll be back up.

As the price rises, tons of people come out of the woodwork and say "damn, I was thinking of buying bitcoins when they were cheap and I really missed out.  If it goes back down a bit, I'm interested in some coins."   (they say this directly to me, e.g. facebook, text messages, etc. and I think it's fair to say it's systemic and worldwide.)

Now the price retreats a bit, and these same people are saying, "OK, it's on its way down, it's probably not going to go any lower than $13 since it sat there for so long, so now's my best chance."  They're gathering their funds right now and figuring out how to get them into bitcoins.

All their funds show up over the next week or two, they buy and hold coins.  The price goes up and stays there.

2851  Economy / Speculation / Re: All-time-high volume on: January 25, 2013, 04:09:25 AM
All time high volume means all time high price shortly? Shocked

Um, no.  Go ahead and look at the all time price/volume history on bitcoin charts.  All the major volume peaks are followed by crashes, then long periods of correction, followed by stagnation.  So, you know, yay!

The crash is done. That's good if there is a stagnation at 15-16 level, so I can accumulate more

You're forgetting the correction part, before the stagnation.  We're likely headed much lower than this.  The crash is just the beginning.  It's the big boys setting the trend.  Now everyone else is going to start unloading, and this will probably go on for months.  I don't know if Adam is joking around, but we probably will go below $10.

That was only a single crash after pirate default, no further correction.

Just some of you may not realize, we have broken the all-time-high volume in USD at the gox USD market yesterday. It was $3.053M and also the only trading day >$3M

It was always the third trading day with >$2.5M. The first one was 2.859M on 8 Jun 2011, during the first bubble. The second one was 2.93M on 17/08/2012, after pirate default
2855  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: January 24, 2013, 05:27:09 PM

The buyer of a put has the right to sell BTC at the strike price (33-35).  So some seller is VERY bullish.  Except I don't understand the terminology "sell short a put"... I suppose that might mean the seller does not have the USD in his account to cover -- he only has BTC (or some other security).

I think the seller is not that bullish because he received 0.979BTC premium for that. If I didn't misunderstand, the break-even point for the buyer and seller is $17.685 for the $35 put option
2856  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: January 24, 2013, 04:49:20 PM
In case you missed it, during the action last night, two parties built up a very sizable options position during the move.

Someone bought ~33,000 calls between $17-20 strike.
Someone else sold short 27,000 puts between $33-35 strike.

Chatlog :
http://polimedia.us/trilema/2013/marketplace-excitement-with-expert-commentary-for-your-vicarious-trading-pleasure/

The puts alone would require a deposit of at least 60,000 BTC in the seller's MPEx account.  Could this person also be preparing to push the exchange rate upward?

All of these options expire TONIGHT. So the rate needs to be moving NOW.

Sorry for my ignorant. Does it mean someone promise to buy 27000BTC at $33-35 tomorrow?? How much premium does he earn by selling the puts?
2857  Economy / Speculation / Re: Top 20 days for Bitcoin on: January 24, 2013, 04:49:42 AM
In order to see the King effect, you have to make the time spans non-overlapping, or it will be dominated by a short period of very high price (i.e. June 2011)

For those who are curious, here are weekly weighted averages (weeks do not start on any particular day):

1. 2011-06-04 through 2011-06-10 W. Avg: 23.38
2. 2011-06-05 through 2011-06-11 W. Avg: 22.62
3. 2011-06-08 through 2011-06-14 W. Avg: 21.42
4. 2011-06-07 through 2011-06-13 W. Avg: 21.41
5. 2011-06-06 through 2011-06-12 W. Avg: 21.31
6. 2011-06-03 through 2011-06-09 W. Avg: 21.30
7. 2011-06-09 through 2011-06-15 W. Avg: 20.25
8. 2011-06-10 through 2011-06-16 W. Avg: 19.06
9. 2011-06-02 through 2011-06-08 W. Avg: 18.83
10. 2011-06-13 through 2011-06-19 W. Avg: 17.84
11. 2011-06-11 through 2011-06-17 W. Avg: 17.47
12. 2011-06-12 through 2011-06-18 W. Avg: 17.33
13. 2011-06-26 through 2011-07-02 W. Avg: 16.40
14. 2011-06-27 through 2011-07-03 W. Avg: 16.38
15. 2013-01-17 through 2013-01-23 W. Avg: 16.16
16. 2011-06-28 through 2011-07-04 W. Avg: 15.79
17. 2013-01-16 through 2013-01-22 W. Avg: 15.79
18. 2013-01-15 through 2013-01-21 W. Avg: 15.31
19. 2013-01-14 through 2013-01-20 W. Avg: 15.01
20. 2011-06-01 through 2011-06-07 W. Avg: 14.94

Note that June 2011 is underrepresented because of the Mt. Gox hack.

Unsurprisingly, 2012 has dominated the top 365-day period lists (note that the leap year may cause confusion):

1. 2012-01-25 through 2013-01-23 W. Avg: 8.07
2. 2012-01-24 through 2013-01-22 W. Avg: 8.04
3. 2012-01-23 through 2013-01-21 W. Avg: 8.01
4. 2012-01-22 through 2013-01-20 W. Avg: 7.98
5. 2012-01-21 through 2013-01-19 W. Avg: 7.96
6. 2012-01-20 through 2013-01-18 W. Avg: 7.94
7. 2012-01-19 through 2013-01-17 W. Avg: 7.91
8. 2012-01-18 through 2013-01-16 W. Avg: 7.86
9. 2012-01-17 through 2013-01-15 W. Avg: 7.82
10. 2012-01-16 through 2013-01-14 W. Avg: 7.80
11. 2012-01-15 through 2013-01-13 W. Avg: 7.79
12. 2012-01-14 through 2013-01-12 W. Avg: 7.77
13. 2012-01-13 through 2013-01-11 W. Avg: 7.75
14. 2012-01-12 through 2013-01-10 W. Avg: 7.73
15. 2012-01-11 through 2013-01-09 W. Avg: 7.71
16. 2012-01-10 through 2013-01-08 W. Avg: 7.69
17. 2012-01-09 through 2013-01-07 W. Avg: 7.67
18. 2012-01-07 through 2013-01-05 W. Avg: 7.66
19. 2012-01-08 through 2013-01-06 W. Avg: 7.66

20. 2012-01-06 through 2013-01-04 W. Avg: 7.64

The past 17 days have consistently set all time highs for the 365-day weighted average. January 6, 2012 was the last day that did not accomplish this, ending up below January 5, 2012. In 52nd place is 2010-10-11 through 2011-10-16 (which spans longer than 365 days because of the hack) with a weighted average of 7.03 USD, the highest 365-day weighted average that does not include a single day from 2012. All periods that include at least one day from 2013 (23 of them) rank in the top 23.

Edit: Then again, the exclusion of crucial dates from June isn't necessarily fair. Here are the top thirty weekly, allowing the hack dates as zero-trade days:

1. 2011-06-04 through 2011-06-10 W. Avg: 23.38
2. 2011-06-05 through 2011-06-11 W. Avg: 22.62
3. 2011-06-08 through 2011-06-14 W. Avg: 21.42
4. 2011-06-07 through 2011-06-13 W. Avg: 21.41
5. 2011-06-06 through 2011-06-12 W. Avg: 21.31
6. 2011-06-03 through 2011-06-09 W. Avg: 21.30
7. 2011-06-09 through 2011-06-15 W. Avg: 20.25
8. 2011-06-10 through 2011-06-16 W. Avg: 19.06
9. 2011-06-02 through 2011-06-08 W. Avg: 18.83
10. 2011-06-13 through 2011-06-19 W. Avg: 17.84

12. 2011-06-11 through 2011-06-17 W. Avg: 17.47
13. 2011-06-12 through 2011-06-18 W. Avg: 17.33

18. 2011-06-22 through 2011-06-28 W. Avg: 16.68

20. 2011-06-16 through 2011-06-22 W. Avg: 16.63
21. 2011-06-21 through 2011-06-27 W. Avg: 16.55
22. 2011-06-25 through 2011-07-01 W. Avg: 16.51
23. 2011-06-26 through 2011-07-02 W. Avg: 16.40
24. 2011-06-27 through 2011-07-03 W. Avg: 16.38
25. 2013-01-17 through 2013-01-23 W. Avg: 16.16
26. 2011-06-17 through 2011-06-23 W. Avg: 16.01
27. 2011-06-28 through 2011-07-04 W. Avg: 15.79
28. 2013-01-16 through 2013-01-22 W. Avg: 15.79
29. 2011-06-20 through 2011-06-26 W. Avg: 15.59
30. 2013-01-15 through 2013-01-21 W. Avg: 15.31

And the yearly now has 2010-10-15 through 2011-10-14 ranking 47th.

The top 100 isn't special. The top 200 demonstrates the same effect, even more pronounced if I might say:

BTW, today's weighted average ranks #13, making the third 2013 day that ranked in the top 20 (the remainder are from June 2011):
