2861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: October 01, 2012, 11:12:25 PM
I think a reasonable request for the foundation would be to provide a mechanism for Satoshi to claim the founders chair, and one of the enumerated powers of the founder's chair would be to dissolve the foundation.

Just to be sure no one is running away with an idea that isn't theirs.

If history is any indication the idea of a Bitcoin Foundation can lead to a central authority system that will be susceptible to third party influence.
2862  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: High Efficiency FPGA & ASIC Bitcoin Mining Devices https://BTCFPGA.com on: October 01, 2012, 09:37:13 PM
1) Trade in your ModMiner Quad for a $300 discount on a bASIC unit.
2) Resell your ModMiner Quad to someone for $200 cash
3) Have BTCFPGA spend resources to have developers continue to develop new firmware for the device to make it do other things like crack password files or other specific computational use

I don't think you should get into #3, that would place you in a bad spot legally.

A discount of $300 is acceptable, IMO. However I would like to put myself to purchase others' MMQ's at a comparable price, since I can still run them after the ASICs come out due to cheap(ish) electricity.

When I mean cracking password files, I dont mean for illegal purposes. People crack password files for security testing and even for fun / hobby
(check out http://hashcat.net/oclhashcat-plus/)

Thank you for your input!

There is a serious need for this when law enforcement chooses to prosecute.

Thanks guys,

May you both come in over spec, under budget and within 10% of your labor forecast.

2864  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What will happen to all the "traditional" mines once the new ASIC based miners on: October 01, 2012, 08:27:52 PM
If i'm mining with 150GH/s of ASICs, why would I both doubling my power consumption for a measly 700MH/s from my 7970? Even if I did have free electric, the heat isn't worth the pennies I'll make in a day.

Exactly. And as vitruvio pointed out, even with free power, running your GPU 24/7 at near max power (or even overclocked) is far from beneficial to the hardware. Don't burn out the hardware in your sexy gaming PC just for a few more MH/s!  Cheesy

I try to get the best Mh/s per watt that I can. So I run at

Max 6990 at 850 Mhz 150 Mhz  1.05v
Min  6990 at 775 Mhz 150 Mhz  1.05v

5970 at 700 Mhz   266 Mhz  0.968v

Max 5870 at 800 Mhz 266 Mhz  0.968v
Min 5870 at 775 Mhz 266 Mhz  0.9v

5830 at 700 Mhz   266 Mhz 0.968v

At the moment only  ngzhang claims that Avalon ASIC is standalone. And to my knowlege only Jalapeņos are USB powered.

Regards
I believe the Avalon and Reclaimer are both standalone.
Reclaimer ?? Didn't know it, even searching here I can't find it, maybe another name?

But this are bonds, so you can't  buy this Asic and mine at home. Am I wrong?

For now yes.

Nothing 100% yet.

I AM GIVING AWAY A FREE MODMINER QUAD 840Mh/s FPGA MINING DEVICE EVERY SINGLE WEEK IN OCTOBER!

(Q) What do I have to do to win a Free ModMiner Quad 840Mh/s FPGA Mining Device?

(A) You must change your signature title ...

I must say, I'm disappointed.  I was not real surprised to see BFL doing this, but I had thought you were above this sort of thing.

Did you really have to use a large bold font with colors, on 4 lines?  It's way more prominent than the message body.

Do you really think that anyone who is serious enough to plop down $599 for an asic miner is not already aware of all of the product offerings, and will be swayed by seeing a signature ad?

BFL has already plenty of free publicity.

and cablepair is making this fun!
2868  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: I Predict Difficulty Will Be Over 100 Million by Summer 2013 on: October 01, 2012, 03:00:25 AM
In the next six months difficulty will gradually increase to 34x. After that the 2nd generation of ASICs will arrive and nobody knows how they gonna perform.

Wrong. In the next six months the difficulty will increase 475x.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought we were pulling random numbers out of our asses.

Then lets do the 4x max per difficulty cycle and assume that there will be 3 difficulty cyles within two 4 weeks from shipping.

If 30 of the estimated 46.3 TH/s from BFL source go live, that puts the  Network total to 53.144 Thash/s

At 23.2Thash/s the Estimated    difficulty will be 3,060,648 in 279 blks

Add 43.6% to the Estimated Difficulty.

At 53.2Thash/s the Estimated difficulty will be 4,395,090 add 6.5% for every 2 weeks that those 30Thash/s are not added to the network.

So if those 30Thash/s hit the network lets say November 7th 2012. We will see a new Estimated Difficulty the following week November 14th. Assuming the network speed at that time being 53.2Thash/s the difficulty would be 5,309,047.00

I expect that there will be another 30Thash/s getting onto the network during difficulty cycle that started November 14th.

By November 24th expect to see an Estimated difficulty increase between 8,302,870 and 8,703,651.

The max potential increase in dificulty cycle and assume that there will be 3 difficulty cyles within two 4 weeks from shipping would be 4x of the previous deficulty.

If we got a difficulty change in 5 days then 14 days the difficulty would be at a wapping 12,242,592 for the first difficulty increase (5-7 Days).
Followed by the next estimated difficulty 4x 12242592 = 48,970,368.

My personal numbers are calculated at the difficulty being as follows.

November 7-14th 2012 @ 5,309,047
November 18th - 24th 2012 @ 8,703,651

My personal maximum estimate because of other factors such as more ASIC's being added to the network then estimated.

November 7-14th 2012 @ 12,242,592
November 18th-24th 2012 @ 48,970,368

Note: This is my personal augmented reality perspective on the situation.

Alright I apologize  Lips sealed

Does not the recent increase in output per device make this bet null and void?

If anyone was as far along with their design as they are saying, they wouldn't be able to change it.

Exactly, they would most likely have to start from scratch and redo the development of the chip.  Such an increase is extremely fishy since they advertise that they will be able to ship next month.

Watch as the largest scam in bitcoin 2012 unfolds.

The possibilities are endless, but in the end only one path, one result.
2872  Other / Off-topic / Re: Does anyone else smell BS?? on: September 30, 2012, 05:23:02 PM
all i see at the moment is BS.
Who are you again?

I'll tell you what sets off my alarm bells...multiple brand new posters bashing ASICs mining equipment companies.

Someone with some common sense and a fresh perspective.

Asking said ASIC mining companies to explain their sudden shift in offerings is not bashing. It should be straight forward for them to answer.

It'll be interesting to see if they shift again should someone come out offereing a 100Ghs @ $1000 solution.

the thing about asking questions is that the answers will lead to more questions until one of two conditions are met.

1. are you satisfied with the answers.
2. are you satisfied with the working result as evidence.
2873  Other / Off-topic / Re: Does anyone else smell BS?? on: September 30, 2012, 04:05:21 PM
Competition is great, i just have an issue with specs changing so near to their supposed delivery dates. Which makes me question how far along with development they really are.
When you've gone so far down a development path it becomes expensive to start changing things at such a late stage. Profits dwindle and companies go bust.

All we've seen so far from anyone is mockups, which makes me think that production and therefore delivery is still a very long way off.

With respect to these changes BFL may have been very conservative with their initial offering.

Mini SC units may have extra slots for more modules to buffer small issues. However only time will tell.

If you have decided on a product then its best to trust that you made a good call.  Hindsight is 20/20!
2874  Bitcoin / Hardware / [Archive] BFL trolling museum on: September 30, 2012, 03:56:41 PM

That's two extra Th's for Teraminers.

I do wonder though, are any of BFL's competition going to be able to meet or beat their power specs? 1Gh/watt is huge.

They should not be to far off. BFL has their trade up options that they seem to promise for 2nd generation nebula ASICs
bASIC as the 1year warranty plus works with open source software options and bit streams.
Avalon has 1 year and may diliver without the need for an external device to start mining.

2877  Other / Off-topic / Re: Does anyone else smell BS?? on: September 30, 2012, 02:54:07 PM
A little over a week ago ngzhang anounced his proposed production of the 'Avalon' ASIC with >= 60Ghs for about $1299 (about double the hashrate of BFL's Single 'SC', and Cablepair's bASIC)

Since then:
BFL have announced their Single 'SC' will now hash at 60Ghs (from 40Ghs) @ $1299
Cablepair has announced their bASIC will now hash at 54Ghs (from 27Ghs) @ $1069 (now selling 27Ghs version @ $599)

Were both BFL and Cablepair originally pricing their units at more than 100%+ markup of the cost of production and development?
Because as i see it they cannot afford to produce these now and make any profit.

Also how have they done it?
1) Are they just doubling the number of boards in each unit? (Only viable option if they have already started PCB production)
Or
2) Have they doubled the number of chips on each board? (Only viable if they haven't started production yet)

In either case i can not see any of these ever hitting the market before Christmas. My money is going firmly back in my wallet until some real devices hit the real world, because all i see at the moment is BS.

Competition is the key and making a successful product for profit is the motivation.

Have to keep you clients happy. Common  business practice for successful product's.

Wait so.. conservative estimate... then planned they to update firmware for faster speeds to be competitive? Doesn't this seem a little bit odd (or even underhanded) to anyone else?

PS3 anyone?
2880  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: "Avalon" ASIC, announcement & pre-order. VERY important notice updated@9/24 on: September 30, 2012, 05:05:33 AM
any news?

"The Avalon ASIC will outperform, dollar for dollar, the leading competitor by 20Gh/s."
not true anymore Sad

also, the power consumption is pretty low, can Avalon beat that?

I can't resist

Only time will tell.....
