What would be the best way to facilitate a local bitcoin economy with the power and internet out, as has been the case for 8+ Million in lower new york for days.

What are your opinions? Physical Bitcoins by Casascius?
Physical bitcoins, and/or IOU's, and/or bartering for goods.

I have bouts of insomnia only when I have a new girlfriend start sleeping at my place. Then I can only sleep a few hours a night after I know she is completely asleep because I fart really loud when I sleep. I've been known to wake people up in adjacent rooms when I stay at hotels. One guy even changed his room when I was on vacation and told me why he did it. He said I should see a doctor and that wasn't normal.
So, uh, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that this problem and your username are somehow related.

Torrents are pretty fast.  1.9MB/s on one I did.  But downloading the file afterward is horribly slow...

I have changed the title to (hopefully) avoid further confusion and quell the naysayers.

Still looking for someone to fill it.  Terms are negotiable.
2886  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A fair and strong Bitcoin fork design exploration, "Faircoin" on: November 01, 2012, 09:39:44 PM
I think this is an interesting idea, and though I won't attempt to predict the viability of it, I would like to see it happen.

Alternatives to Bitcoin are not a bad thing.  Bad alternatives are a bad thing, but I'd call this one a neutral alternative.  It has good intentions, it is just a matter of experimenting with the idea and see if it actually works in practice/

The most important aspect for success would be getting enough pool operators onboard.

2888  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why ASIC's Should Not Be The Future Of Crypto Currencies on: November 01, 2012, 08:39:29 PM
Don't see why botnet operators have anything to do with this??

Even with ASIC, botnets will still exist.  Wink

If they want to make the same amount of money as they were before ASIC's, they will just have to add more nodes to their botnet.  Roll Eyes

So that doesn't change anything for anyone really..
It changes quite a lot.

Botnets cost a certain amount, and are valued at a certain amount.

If a $500/monthly botnet rental brings in $2,027.40/month of bitcoins, then it is a worthwhile investment.
If the same botnet (after ASICs are released) bring in $150/month of bitcoins, then it's a waste of the botnet renter's time.

Likewise, if a botnet owner can mine $2,027.40/month of bitcoins, but only rent it out at $500/month, then it makes sense to mine on that botnet instead of renting it out.  But if ASICs are released, and the same botnet would only bring in $150/month worth of Bitcoins, then it makes sense to rent it out instead of mine bitcoins with it.

Most botnets are already at their max size.  In other words, they can't just "add more nodes" to their botnet - the nodes are being added at precisely the rate that people's computers are infected.  An operator couldn't just increase the infection rate - if they could, they would have already done so.  For some reason, you seem to think it is as easy as the click of a button and doesn't cost anything.

Without ASIC's, this botnet operator earns $67.58/day.
With ASIC's, this botnet operator would earn around $5.00/day.

Without ASIC's, this botnet operator earns $129.50/day
With ASIC's, this botnet operator would earn around $10/day.

Etc, etc, etc.

Enough said.

If you knew anything about the nervous system like I do you'd know where, in martial arts you get taught where the most vital points of a body are so you can avoid killing them by accident, as for guns well, of course the person is going to bleed to death anyway if you just leave them there, but you can't be that much of an asshole you'd just leave them to die right?
If they attacked me in the first place with intent to rob or kill, then yeah, I'd be pretty guilt-free letting them die.
2891  Other / Off-topic / Re: Damned home phone handsets on: November 01, 2012, 07:32:29 PM
I'd swear more but I'm trying to stay relaxed right now Tongue I just got pretty pissed at the house phone because I received several phone calls clearly from telemarketers or some assholes like them and every time they rang for about 5 seconds and each time I had almost got to the phone the fuckers hung up. My only conclusion could be drawn is that they were trying to make money out of me so they didn't have the time to wait around for someone to answer or whoever is trying to talk is an impatient twat that can't wait thirty seconds for me to get down the stairs and pick up the phone.

I swear when I get my own place, I'm disconnecting my phone line and just using the internet and mobile phone so I don't get bloody pestered constantly.

AND BREATHE......
I've never owned a landline in my life.  Utterly pointless IMO.
2892  Other / Off-topic / Re: Sleep on: November 01, 2012, 07:31:39 PM
I simply dislike sleeping. I find being productive more satisfying than sleeping, but we all need to sleep somewhat. So anyways, I get between 0 and 14 hours of sleep, depending how many times I do the former before performing the latter.
It's a combination of both for me.  I tend to sleep at least 6 hours a day, but only because I have trouble staying awake during the day if I get any less.  But I also view sleep as a necessary evil and a waste of time.  I could be doing so many other things that are either productive or enjoyable instead.

Finally broken down and pre-ordered a single. I don't care how late it ships, just take my money and give me shiny new hardware to play with.

I'd settle for ugly hardware if it could arrive sooner.  The idea that BFL customers care about cases with laser etched logos is absurd.
They're waiting on chips either way, may as well make the cases fancy in the meantime.

I care.
2898  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MtGox - sigh... even more crap coming our way now on: October 31, 2012, 06:39:26 PM
I actually did a transfer from MtGox to Dwolla recently... it was very quick.  An hour after the request, my Dwolla account had money in it.  And my bank account the next day.
2899  Economy / Lending / [WANTED] $2650 Loan @ 18% on: October 31, 2012, 05:51:48 PM
I am looking for a $2650 loan to be funded by an equivalent amount of Bitcoins (currently around 240 BTC).  The loan will be used to purchase additional mining equipment (two SC Singles) from BFL.

I already have two singles on first-day preorder, which means I will be getting them in the first shipment BFL makes.  I will dedicate all coins mined towards paying off this loan.  Potentially, it could be paid off in just over a month from today.

I chose not to use BTCJam, because I do not believe they release enough information in the event of a default.  I feel as though I could create a more trustworthy transaction here.  If you would like to see this loan listed on BTCJam instead, please do say something, and if I do not have success here, I will list there.

TERMS OF THE LOAN:
- Interest of 1.5% (approx. 18% APR) will be compounded at 12:00 AM on the first of each month on the remaining balance of the loan at that time.
- Loan will be repaid at the Bitcoin equivalent of $2650 + interest.
- USD equivalent to be calculated at the Mt.Gox weighted average at the time of each payment.
- Payments will begin within a week upon arrival of initial mining hardware (currently estimated to be November 28th), and shall continue with one payment of at least $220 equivalent of Bitcoin per calendar month.

OTHER NOTES: I am willing to provide personal identification.  I own my home, so I'm not just going to up and disappear over a $2500 loan.  I also have a 4 year degree, a regular full time job, and a family to support.  I hate having debt, and always work to pay it off as quickly as possible.  However, I believe ASICs continue to make a sound investment at this point, thus my willingness to take on a bit of debt to add to my collection of miners.
2900  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Which ASIC device will ship first? [Poll and Discussion] on: October 31, 2012, 03:53:45 PM
As of yesterday 10.30.2012: (from BFL_Josh on BFL Forums)

Guys (and gals), I am really sorry things are delayed. I want these things to ship more than anyone else (seriously, I promise you, I want these to ship) and the delays are just as hurtful and awful to us as they are to you. We would love nothing more than to ship them all out yesterday.

The first batch should be about 20,000 chips or so. More than enough for all pre-orders and then some. With regards to bASIC, given the fact that Tom has shown basically nothing, no renders, no prototype, not even any power estimates, it seems exceedingly unlikely he will ship before us. I'm not saying it's impossible of course, but there are many "fishy" things about the bASIC offering. Of course, the whole power issue, which Tom refuses to acknowledge is one of the biggest clues that things are not right in the bASIC world. If he were as far along as he implies, he would at least have a fairly reasonable and accurate power estimate, but his little "slip" of less than 100w for 54 GH/s is pretty unrealistic at 90nm, especially if it's Cell ASIC or something similar. Again, I'm not saying it's impossible, maybe Tom has come up with major surprise and be able to ship on his currently stated timeline, but it seems unlikely at this point. Be that as it may, I absolutely promise we will be shipping our units as fast as we possibly can.

For the record, we do not use TSMC, which I suspect Tom uses. I really wish the Bitcoin Magazine article would come out so I can talk more openly about our technology /sigh. Even if Tom were to ship a few days before us (which seems exceedingly unlikely at the moment), the long term ROI on our units vs the bASIC is vastly superior, so you'd make up the difference in the long run. Is that ideal? No, of course not, but it does make a difference, no matter how much the bASIC people try to convince themselves that power efficiency doesn't matter. A year or two down the road when your Bitforce unit is still earning money, the bASIC owners will have a sad panda face when they look at their worthless hardware that costs more to power than it earns and thus has absolutely no use what so ever. Then, on top of that, you'll likely be able to send us your old unit for credit towards a new unit.

Just sayin'

And this little nugget: (from BFL_Josh on BFL Forums)

Quote
Some aspects of the chip production ended up taking longer than expected to get rolling, which is why we have ended up paying for a bullet run and we're looking at ~25 days or so. We still intend to do the 1/3 shipping plan, I'm just saying we are getting that many chips in our first production batch... as in, we are getting enough to satisfy a lot of orders, but obviously we can't physically assemble 20,000 chips worth of orders in a few days. Not without hiring like 40 more people at any rate.

Thanks for updating us with the update...  Wink

I first thought that he meant the first batch to be assembled would be all of the preorders..!

Lol, scrybe beat me to it.

Interesting though.  If 20,000 chips are more than enough for the preorders, then let's assume the preorders are 15,000 chips.  15,000 chips @ 8gh/s each is 120TH/s.  That would fit right in on the low side of estimates people have been making.

I like it.  The singles would still carry an ROI of a few months.  Might have to order more...
