2881  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Symantec Endpoint protection don't like Amory 0.90-beta, should I care? on: December 04, 2013, 09:57:42 AM
Symantec Endpoint protection warns me about the Amory 0.90-beta installer:

- Unproven
- Very few users - "this file has been seen by fewer than 100 Symantec users"
- New -  Symantec has known about this file for aprox. 2 weeks.

I checked the hash to the best of my abilities, the installer should be ok.

Less than 100 symantec user installed Amory 0.90-b... really?

Any comments?

That is great - good approach

Looking forward to part of the venture.

If you bought shares partially with different orders, will they be placed on the same machine, or as they come in?

How are the votes going to be when it is time to sell the equipment?
is the votes for each machine you have part in or the round as a whole.

(I know this is kinda theoretical, it willl be obvious when the machines are not generating profit any more).

How long will the r17 be open (approximate)
Is it close to be sold out?
2886  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Can bitaddress.org be trusted? (academic question) on: December 03, 2013, 12:15:35 PM
To answer your last question first, I don't trust the random number generator in my OS, let alone when used from javascript running on a liveUSB. Fortunately, bitaddress.org lets you provide your own private key which you can randomly generate from a more trustworthy source of randomness.

I was thinking about something, what are the rules for generating your own WIF 51 characters base58 private address? Is the only rule that the first character in the string is "5" ?
In that case, it would be pretty straight forward to generate your own private key.
2887  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Can bitaddress.org be trusted? (academic question) on: December 02, 2013, 11:26:34 PM
I read something written by someone else here which said something about the possibility of a virus (which could be carried by the CD/DVD/USB-stick) which generates a pattern in your power usage which can be read by someone monitoring the power usage of your house. So if you want to be completely paranoid, you'll have to run the computer by battery, and either destroy the battery afterward or at least never again connect it to the grid. Grin

Now that is the right level of paranoia I am looking for  Grin

Thank you for all the input guys (thanks a lot).
My conclusion is that you need to run your own random generator (truly deterministic)  and use it as a input to a script you understand and trust.

You can look up the transaction on:
https://blockchain.info/

e.g. look up the public adr. you send to.

How much did you pay in tx-fee?
2891  Economy / Service Discussion / Can bitaddress.org be trusted? (academic question) on: December 02, 2013, 02:38:21 PM
I know this topic has been discussed many time... I want to hear your opinion about the private address generation algorithm on https://www.bitaddress.org/.

I been looking at different methods to SECURE funds in a paper wallet (for a academic study).
My conclusion is that offline generation with a dump of https://www.bitaddress.org/ is straight forward and easy to use - and secure if you follow certain procedures.

Lets assume that I am super paranoid..
- Download https://www.bitaddress.org/ to a new USB stick
- Download Ubuntu to a new stick.
- Boot Ubontu on computer that is located in a soundproof Faraday cage with black curtains around - with no connection to any kind of network.
- Generate wallets - copy with pen/paper (or print through a printer on the USB port).
- Destroy all your equipment after.

.... am I missing something? (please point out if yes)

The question is: can bitaddress.org be trusted?

I have not studied the code - but if the seed are not completely deterministic, then will it be possible to re-generate the private address or at least limit the range to bruteforce.
What is your opinion, can https://www.bitaddress.org/ be trusted in regard to making completely random private keys?

2894  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I have coins.... Somewhere! on: December 01, 2013, 03:24:27 PM
Good news and bad news. I found my coins! Block chain!
Bad news is I didn't have as much as I thought! Got 0.75btc. Sill only paid about £10 so it's a considerable profit!

That leads me on to my next question... To turn it in to GBP can anyone recommend a website for me to visit to research to make sure I get the best possible deal?

I am happy to hear yo found your coins.
You should not be sad that it is only 0.75 - its much better than 0.00.

I would also think twice about selling right now - when you have only invested £10, you don't have much to loose by saving them.
However always do what you think is best, we don't know your situation/life ect.

Further, I have one more advice; if you are planing on holding on to your BTC for a longer period of time then get em away from the online wallet as soon as possible. On the other hand if you are selling Monday, then you might as well keep em online (maybe update the password on your account to something strong as well).
2895  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I have coins.... Somewhere! on: December 01, 2013, 02:17:20 PM
All the advice here are pretty good; focus on your email inbox around that time - and also try to see if you have a old account at Mt.Gox.

I hope you find your coins.
2896  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Overcoming Bitcoin Anxiety on: December 01, 2013, 02:08:31 PM
Yeah, I know what you mean.

One way to reduce the risk is to spread out your funds on different medias.
E.g. having 1/3 of the fund on a computer that is not connected to the Internet and having 2/3 in two different paper wallet that is created on different computers/OS.

I would also recommend to have a old small laptop like a Asus eee used exclusively as a wallet. Then you can turn it off and hide it under your pillow (remeber to back up the wallet to 1-2 dedicated USB drive and hide them somewhere safe as well).
2897  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Transferring cash from Mt.Gox to BTC-E on: November 30, 2013, 11:39:11 PM
Mt.Gox works fine with trading below 1 BTC (i dont know the lower limit) - maybe you use "," instead of "." for the decimal point?
So as already said, the easiest way to transfer is with bitcoin.

Buy BTC for you entire balance at Mt.Gox (i even believe that the trade commission is 0% all weekend due to the hollyday)

- press  "Funding option" -> "Withdraw funds" -> enter your BTC deposit adr. at BTC-e (The tx fee is 0.0005 BTC)
2898  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need advice on mining on: November 30, 2013, 08:15:16 PM
I agreed with all that is already stated. The time-to-marked is everything.
There are no guarantee for delivery.

Have you considered to buy shares in mining rigs?
In that way you can even out the risk by buying different types of shares.

What kinda rig (hardware specs, type of coins to mine?) - tell some more about your business plan.
2900  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need advice on mining on: November 30, 2013, 07:37:42 PM
My opinion is that "time to market" is everything in that biz - the faster you can get to the market, the better the revenue.
Have you taken the difficult change into you calculations?
