2921  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Error Analysis in Bitcointalk Forum on: August 09, 2022, 02:50:06 PM
Error occurred almost every day from newbies to legendary member ranks in the forum.

Errors do happen. We're human and, like the Romans said, "errare humanum est".
Many people here may have been even learning their English from the internet.

So it depends greatly on what kind of errors there are and how big they are.
Many write "loosing" instead of "losing", but one can understand their point. On the other hand I've read (a few times) some .. lists of words... (meant to be posts) I've completely failed to understand.
Or I've seen people trying to present nicely some advises or a "how-to", but it's full of mistakes. This cannot even be compared with spelling mistakes, since it can mislead others into making mistakes.
Or I've seen people "mistakenly" post links to malicious things.
Errors in judgement also do happen, just look into Reputation and start scratching your head Grin

So, there are many types of errors. And you may have captured the most common, but arguably the less important ones (small spelling related errors for example don't matter much, at least not to me; wrong board can easily be reported and handled).

And I will go back to what Romans say. "Errare humanum est, perseverare autem diabolicum." Learn from your errors and evolve. Persisting in errors is "diabolical", they said.
2922  Bitcoin / Press / [2022-08-09] Iran makes first import order using cryptocurrency on: August 09, 2022, 01:31:40 PM
https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/iran-makes-first-import-order-using-cryptocurrency-tasnim-2022-08-09/

According to Reuters (who is citing another agency), Iran has made this its first official import order using cryptocurrency. It's an order that worth $10M. It doesn't tell it was Bitcoin or not though, and the following part makes it even more confusing:

"By the end of September, the use of cryptocurrencies and smart contracts will be widely used in foreign trade with target countries," an official from the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade said on Twitter.

I'm not even sure whether I should be happy or unhappy about this news, but certainly it's far from unexpected. It's... part of the adoption...
2923  Other / Meta / Re: Forum advertising space for free signature/avatar advertisement on: August 09, 2022, 12:45:55 PM
(And yes, a campaign manager could be a must, as somebody keeping a close eye on how the advertised service is developing, and make sure people don't end up advertising scam).
It's always a possibility that something can turn into a scam and people go rogue unfortunately. But I have not considered the need to have a campaign manager. Since there is no money involved here, I doubt anyone would accept that "job" of regularly checking what is going on. The participants can do some basic checks, but that's about it.

If the "campaign manager" is a frequent user of the service, this should be no problem.
Else I feel that some of those who may accept to advertise the service may not be OK with this or that simply because they're not that familiar with the service, and you know, since it's also for free, why risk?
Maybe I'm wrong, but this is how I see the things.
2924  Economy / Economics / Re: ECB - Towards the holy grail of cross-border payments on: August 09, 2022, 07:59:48 AM
And I'd say Bitcoin is actually less safe than gold. Have you ever heard about a gold vault heist in real life?

While I do agree that Bitcoin can be stolen easier then gold - if not properly secured - I also didn't hear about Bitcoin seed stored under similar security measures as gold (thick walls, armed military defending it and so on).
While for Bitcoin a N-of-N multisig with N big enough is a pretty good solution (if it works for nukes, why it wouldn't work for BTC?), and also cheap, gold still needs strong security and storage that costs a lot of money.
Even more, electronics industry may find good use for that bunch of gold hoarded just for the sake of it.
2925  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What would happen to bitcoin if all bitcoin-related stuff on GitHub got banned? on: August 09, 2022, 07:16:53 AM
So, the question that bothers me is could the same happen to Bitcoin?

I don't think so. Bitcoin is not illegal and its current direction is getting adopted by large institutions. They can easily lobby against this kind of measures if it's the case.

What will happen to Bitcoin if the US Government suddenly decides to take down its Github repos?

Take down is not likely, maybe restricted access, but that means that reading is still possible.
If it's indeed taken down then internet archive still exists, many people also have local backups... it may be a small setback, but far from "the end of the world".

What if they ban all contributors, maintainers, and lead developers? Is there a place where the bitcoin codebase can migrate to? Are there other code hosting platforms besides Github that are not based in the US or upon which US Government sanctions have little to no influence?

In theory anyone can host a system similar to Github on his computer, just if it's not publicly visible there may come trust issues.
And obviously all the bigger systems like this are centralized. The most known is GitLab, but a list would be here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/24256558

Is it possible to build a decentralized and distributed code hosting platform that no one can censor or shut off?

Probably. But first the decentralized file system platforms need to become more robust/reliable, not just new wannabe projects. Also I expect that using such services cannot be for free.
2926  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 09, 2022, 06:55:44 AM
Isn't there a way of monitoring Chipmixer's online status without compromising the much intended privacy, like this one of an exchange (https://status.huobigroup.com)?

Isn't the checking of such a clearnet website compromising more of your privacy than checking directly the CM onion website with Tor browser?!
2927  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I messed up on: August 08, 2022, 08:14:40 PM
Help, I fucked up really bad, I mistakenly deleted my recovery seed that I wrote down in a txt file on my PC and its been over two weeks now, is there anyway I can recover this? I've tried software like disk drill and other but none gives back that exat .txt file.

As said, the recovery seed may be overwritten and unrecoverable.
But you said nothing about the actual wallet (or hardware wallet) based on that seed. Is that still operating? Since a wallet like Electrum may show the seed and you can back it up again. Or, if the wallet is still okay, you can (carefully and with backups) maybe create a new wallet, backup properly the new seed and send the funds from the old wallet to the new one (just, again, make sure the old wallet got a proper backup, we don't want to lose that too). And if you're not sure about any step, ask (for example you may want to create the new wallet in a safe environment).
2928  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Missing bitcoins and litecoins from ledger nano s on: August 08, 2022, 07:46:39 PM
Since Ledger Live has a good history of bugs, I'd advise you go on another route:

* go to Electrum.org, download latest Electrum
* verify your download: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/
* run Electrum and create Standard wallet, Use Hardware Device .. and use it with your Ledger.

Electrum should show (better) your transaction history. Maybe you find something Ledger Live is missing.
(Edit: Electrum shows by default mBTC, you may want to change in Tools->Preferences to BTC to avoid further confusion)
2929  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to Upload Audio in Bitcointalk on: August 08, 2022, 07:38:54 PM
I have not seen or read in any board concerning audio in the forum.

That's because it lacks usefulness. Most people reading a forum like this will "scan" the text much faster and easier than listening to an audio file.
While an image can be very useful, while it's said that an image is better than 1000 words, while a screen capture can show easily what problem somebody might encounter, the use for audio files is limited, so I'd guess nobody cared.

Listen to the audio that I uploaded in this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5407508.msg60624586#msg60624586.

You didn't upload any audio to that thread. You've uploaded it somewhere else and you've linked it to that thread.
Even more, as said, since that website you've used is barely known, people won't click your links because they're cannot be sure those links are not malicious.
2930  Economy / Service Discussion / Another one bites the dust: lending platform Hodlnaut on: August 08, 2022, 03:05:14 PM
According to The Block:

Crypto lending platform Hodlnaut halts withdrawals and is working on a recovery plan

The official announcement tells:

To all users, we regret to inform you that we will be halting withdrawals, token swaps and deposits with immediate effect. We have reached this difficult decision due to recent market conditions.
[~snip~]
We would like to reassure you that this difficult decision was taken for us to focus on stabilising our liquidity and preserving assets, while we work to find the best way to protect our users’ long-term interests.

So... is anybody still keeping their money on various centralized platforms hoping for pennies?
You still don't see how risky is that?!
2931  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could bitcoin mining solve climate change? on: August 08, 2022, 02:35:10 PM
Check out his interview on the

If you want to discuss, write here the most important ideas. I don't go to watch random youtube movies only for you to get more hits.

I don't expect anything new to be said there. Mining Bitcoin is just a tiny fraction of human activities that use electricity.
For real changes towards helping this planet big (and costly) steps must be made and nobody is willing to make them, hence they are diverting mass media's eyes towards bitcoin mining.
2932  Other / Meta / Re: Would you be interested in promoting Bitcoin projects/services for free? on: August 08, 2022, 01:48:47 PM
We currently have 9 people who have shown an interest in providing free promotion: Pmalek, Rizzrack, Mbitr, BitcoinGirl.Club, Z-tight, eddie13, Maestro75, ETFbitcoin, and Ucy. Approximately the same number of people are maybes depending mostly on whether or not they are in a signature campaign or not.

Is there anyone else?

I could also do this, now and then, for avatar + personal text, but with no strong commitment.

And while I guess that this means pretty much nothing, I guess that many others are in the same situation: if somebody start "managing" such campaigns, some of those having nothing better/more profitable to wear, would also think on this as a valid option, especially if they see reputable/trusted members wearing that.

(And yes, a campaign manager could be a must, as somebody keeping a close eye on how the advertised service is developing, and make sure people don't end up advertising scam).
2933  Economy / Reputation / Re: What happens if someone mistakenly tags you a negative trust and dies? on: August 08, 2022, 11:34:13 AM
1. Is Negative Trust irreversible?

Although the topic is rather old, I think that there's a small nuance nobody has "touched" yet.
While trust rating is indeed irreversible if the user leaves the forum, while trust rating indeed can be changed only by the user (in theory), there's something more:

Bitcointalk is a forum based on a central database. This means that if the administrator (i.e. theymos) can be convinced, he could invalidate (remove?) directly in the database the trust feedback.
Of course, it would be an overly dangerous precedent, of course, this has never been done (afaik), but, at least in theory it's possible.
There were discussions that at least banned users' feedback would be nice if it's invalidated, but it has never happened.

But, like in every good or bad, I tend to never say never (still, you better learn to live with whatever feedback you've received, it's a safer approach).
2934  Economy / Economics / Re: Do cash control spending more than digital or crypto currency? on: August 08, 2022, 10:25:18 AM
It is believed that cash helps people budget, as using it means you literally can count the pennies.

I agree to this, although one can look daily into internet banking app and "count the pennies" if he wants too (of course, if it's not technologically impaired).

However, imho it's not the main reason people take out cash for holidays. Imho people don't know what to expect in the new location. I've been this year at a wonderful location in Greece that had no ATM (OK, next town, a few miles away, had that). And almost everybody still prefers to be paid in cash. So having cash on you to cover for the holiday is a pretty much expected approach, no matter what politicians and banksters tell on TV.
2935  Other / Archival / Re: ZB Exchange - Possible hack, ~$5 million on: August 08, 2022, 10:11:54 AM
I am more surprised at people who carry their money to various no-name exchanges with a trading volume of several tens of bitcoins (and even less). I always wonder, what did they find on those exchanges that the well-known, highly liquid exchanges don't have?

Such exchanges usually have much wider spread. If they provide liquidity for some "hot" pairs, they can earn more there than from the bigger exchanges. Of course, it's a gamble.

I've used in the past such exchanges to get rid of new coins or fork coins, for example. Getting to a "known" coin I could withdraw even 5-10$ like amounts was painful and I've been easily losing 10-30% on this kind of trades (or at least this is what I remember, I may be wrong, it was several years ago)
2936  Economy / Economics / Re: ECB - Towards the holy grail of cross-border payments on: August 08, 2022, 09:53:16 AM
Why would any government want to back a currency with Bitcoin?

From what I know, now currencies are not backed by anything. They are simply IOU papers, central bank promise papers.

However, countries keep gold in vaults, to prove some sort of solvability. And that can be replaced by Bitcoin. Why? Because private keys are much easier to safely store (if one knows what he's doing) and, unlike for gold, they would not have to pay for huge vaults for storage. Also proof of funds is easy to get.
Even more, it starts becoming visible that gold may not be as scarce as initially thought and this may become tricky (pricewise).

Back to the question: indeed, since fiat is not backed at all, I don't see why would they be backing CBDCs with bitcoin, when they can back with fiat or, directly nothing.
2937  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: mine a Bitcoin on: August 08, 2022, 09:09:57 AM
I want to buy a mining machine. Do you have any recommendations?
How long does it take a state-of-the-art mining machine to mine a Bitcoin? Huh

Maybe you know all this, but since you're newbie and your question looks more like jumping in head-first, I feel have to write all this:

Mining bitcoin is pretty much a business. Mining machines are far from cheap and if your electricity price is not overly cheap you'll end up mining bitcoin more expensive than buying it.
So I advise you read more and understand better what you're planning to do.

Also, if you will have only one miner, you will probably use pool mining, gathering tiny amounts from each block mined by that pool, you won't exactly "mine one bitcoin" directly.

Actual miners would give you more info about machine and approximate time frame for getting 1 BTC (assuming the difficulty doesn't change much)
2938  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Is Trading at a Discount, Says Bloomberg Senior Analyst on: August 08, 2022, 08:53:07 AM
Crypto winter for some, summer sales for some others  Wink

Indeed, it's trading at a discount, especially in the last 2 months. And this situation may last some more months, or the price may drop some more, or maybe the crypto winter is already over (we just have a pump - maybe small, maybe not). However, crypto winter will end. And then some will be crying again that they've missed the train. It happens all the time.

However: this is speculation, not financial advice.

Of course, although it holds not much of value (since it's speculation), it's nice to have such things coming from a "Bloomberg Senior Analyst" (although I don't care much of such a title, I expect some do).
2939  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What can we do against Blockchain fraudsters? on: August 08, 2022, 08:43:51 AM
Greed is the biggest problem. That's what most fraudsters exploit. That or insufficiently tested software (like DeFi, new wallets, new exchange platforms, atomic swaps).
If you are less greedy, if you don't go after each wild promise, if you take some precautions (don't keep too much money on centralized platforms, protect your local wallets properly), then you are safe.

Don't jump head first in every new "offer". Think very good every move you do. Think "I would really do this with my card?".
2940  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 07, 2022, 04:04:40 PM
If you deposit and withdraw the same amounts with no delay you diminish the value of mixing.

I am almost sure that the engine doing the mixing is not down (I expect its uptime not being related to onion, instead related to bitcoin network and some machine running 24/7 in the cloud).

On top of that... the ChipMixer paradigm is based on creating a session that terminates after 7 days.  Meaning... if I create a session and deposit some bitcoin I need to preserve the chips or withdraw the BTC within 7 days.

I guess that OP, when he's back, can easily handle that (and also give more insightful answers too).
