1981  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Has Ledger stopped updating apps for the Nano S on: November 08, 2022, 07:46:09 AM
Support doesn't mean they need to update firmware and individual coin apps, it only means they have to answer to people about complains and maybe replace device if they are in warranty.

Software is as much as hardware under that warranty, simply because it's only them who can deliver it.
Or you expect they'll change the Nano S for Nano S plus when people will complain that the LL no longer supports their Nano because the software is too old!?
So the important updates will be there.

I don't know if they are so stupid do make separate apps for each model, that would make their work much more complicated, but it's possible judging how they handled updates for previously retired models.

They've done many questionable moves lately and they've lost a great deal of popularity.
It would make no sense to deliver different software for Nano S and Nano S plus, that costs them more and the effect on people's perception will be very bad.
It could indeed force people buy other models, but the negative advertising will make most turn to other makers.

I like SeedSigner, but it's not solution for dummies, and I think we have larger amount of dummies who are using hardware wallets.
SeedSigner are similar DIY devices are more intended for geeks, and people who like making things for themselves.

SeedSigner is also sold completely assembled. It's not for dummies, but people like the one with the not-that-cold storage from my previous post can probably already use it.

You don't have to trust in secure element (there is none) but you don't have to keep seed words on device also Wink

You've confused me with the last part. Doesn't SeedSigner need to contain seed or zprv in order to sign tx?!

1983  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Losing $350,000 because of a friend, what would you do? on: November 07, 2022, 04:31:43 PM
Isn't that the point? What are you going to do? Prosecute them, leave them to get thrown out and stay on, or just what most would do and do nothing?

I don't have to do anything. Maybe tell the manager to look at the recording.
The dealer should have been not letting anyone touch the chips, so it's all on him.
1984  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Losing $350,000 because of a friend, what would you do? on: November 07, 2022, 04:06:24 PM
I know this is likely not to happen in real life. But let's say it did. What would you do?

1. This is not losing 350k, it's.. not winning 350k.
2. This cannot happen because afaik nobody is allowed to touch your chips, even if that one is with you/your friend. An I wrong?

Let's not confuse movies with reality.
1985  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: November 07, 2022, 02:10:26 PM
This is quite a boring season for Drive to Survive series that's for certain.

With Seb leaving? With the Alonso drama? With Ricci leaving? With the uncertainty over Mick?
With all the issues about the car's floor? With Ferraris having such a good start and such a bad continuation?
With Russell being overall more constant and arguably better than Lewis?
With Checo telling at some point that he is aiming for the championship?

I think that there will be enough ammo for a bit of drama and a good enough season, really.

More on-topic: I see that the Brazilian GP will bring again a sprint race. I was missing those, actually. It will be a fun week-end.

So while looking for fallback cannot hurt, it's early for that ; new HW will most probably be launched meanwhile and then one will have to take a close look again.
If you want a fallback now which you know will be 100% guaranteed to work in 5/10/20 years' time (or as close to 100% guaranteed as possible), then get yourself an airgapped computer. For the price of some hardware wallets (~$200) you can easily find an old second hand laptop which you can buy, strip the connectivity hardware out of, format the hard drive and install some light weight Linux distro (or even strip out the hard drive too and run Tails via a live USB). And even if popular airgapped software like Electrum is long discontinued in 20 years time, you can be almost certain that there will be old copies of it still being hosted or even just a simple tool like Iancoleman which you can use to turn your seed phrase in to private keys and addresses.

An airgapped device plus your seed phrase keeps you completely protected against failure of your hardware wallet.

An (old) airgapped computer is always a good option, but it lacks 2 things: convenience (you probably won't get it out with you) and foolproof (I will never forget the guy that came to bitcointalk complaining that his money got stolen from his "airgapped computer which he used to connect to network only for short periods to get his transactions out", heh).

That's why I consider SeedSigner a strong option. It's just a Raspberry Pi Zero (not too far from a general purpose computer after all, just cheaper) with a fancy enclosure and the necessary hardware and software added to it. It's cheaper too than the 200$ mark. Ah, and no WiFi, so less chances for errors.
1989  Other / Meta / Re: Converting Bitcointalk to a decentralized Forum (Non-technical explanation) on: November 07, 2022, 11:17:33 AM

You cannot be more wrong.
A forum that doesn't allow administration and censorship is the recipe for disaster. Although the forum, as it is now, allows freedom of speech, it still prohibits spam, plagiarism and spreading malware. Probably more too. And hundreds of posts (at least) are removed daily because of this.
On the other hand, a forum like you propose will be the ultimate garbage collector.

So my proposal is, like I tell those who want to create a better Bitcoin too: be my guest, make your own and see how many will embrace your idea. Then you will see if the idea was good or not.
1990  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX comedy and might be another exchange that bites the dust? on: November 07, 2022, 10:52:46 AM
While FTX is still rather small, they had aggressive advertising and many have foreseen FTX as the one that will soon replace Binance as pretty much the top CEX around.

It might be small if we trust Binance numbers, but remember that CZ was the architect behind that incredible volume at OKCoin when everyone knew the numbers are fake, so how much of what Binance claims is true?

This is correct. On the other hand, I hope that you realize that the chances are slim that it's only Binance faking their volumes (and FSX is not). So I'd take absolutely every exchanges' volumes with quite a pinch of salt.
And just the fact Binance's shitcoin does much better than FTX's shitcoin tells that CZ must be doing something better than SBF, even if that's only the playing the smokes and mirrors game.

Edit: fixed typo
1991  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX comedy and might be another exchange that bites the dust? on: November 07, 2022, 10:32:43 AM
CZ's intention is certainly to destroy Sam's kingdom.

While FTX is still rather small, they had aggressive advertising and many have foreseen FTX as the one that will soon replace Binance as pretty much the top CEX around.
Of course that now, with FTT in trouble, CZ has found the best moment to liquidate his stash and cause even more problems to the competitor.
Will this destroy FTX? I don't know. But it will most probably show that its place is not on top.
1992  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scam form old member of bitcointalk (Date Registered:April 28, 2014) on: November 07, 2022, 10:23:23 AM
the link he sent is a fake miner website, to track my hardware model, OS\network envirment

This is the "benefit" of doing this kind of things privately, on telegram, instead of publicly, on the forum.
If done publicly, others could have been seeing the links and the story and tell you from start that it all stinks.

PS. Scammers were around in 2014 too. Even more, since then the account could have easily change hands too (hack, selling, ...); tagging it now.
1993  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is the market looking at another Terra Luna, Are your funds safe at FTX on: November 07, 2022, 10:19:20 AM
To begin with, my opinion is that this topic does not belong in this board, because what do the tokens of a crypto exchange have to do with Bitcoin?

I agree it should be moved, but not to altcoins, but to service discussions.
Imho those (shit)tokens only show that a service may have issues. The emphasis is imho on "Are your funds safe at FTX", not "FTT is falling".

The problem is that comments may turn the topic in altcoins shitshow.
1994  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Access to Ledger Nano S (2018 version) without PIN? on: November 07, 2022, 09:42:10 AM
the Trezor from that time where much easier to hack

While looking up for something unrelated, I've read about Trezor's official reasons behind not using Secure Elements.

In one of the many options we reviewed, we saw a potential candidate for a Secure Element to be used in our product and we went deeper into our research. As this was a Common Criteria certified chip, we did not expect what we found. Over a few weeks, we uncovered several different critical flaws requiring no special hardware leading to the extraction of the secrets from the chip. We quickly realized these were the attacks nobody tested against.

I don't know whether it's the same chip as Nano S is using, but maybe you get to use some of Trezor's knowledge on the matter.
Unlike Ledger, who are bound to not divulge anything about the secure chip they use, Trezor may be able to help.
I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, still, it can be an idea...
1995  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is the market looking at another Terra Luna, Are your funds safe at FTX on: November 07, 2022, 09:36:20 AM
Though i don't know by myself, but people are actually saying that they have been charged almost $100 as a withdrawal fees, cannot be sure , but yes there must be something cooking behind the walls..

OK, I've looked myself for their help pages. Bitcoin (> 0.01BTC) and most altcoins' withdrawals are officially for free. ETH, tokens are not free.
Even more, of qualifying for free withdrawals, one has to actually trade, it seems:

Note: For free withdrawals, however, in the case of a user whose fiat/stablecoin deposit/withdrawal volume exceeds their trading volume, we reserve the right to charge a withdrawal fee of up to 0.10%.  We will reach out to any users affected before applying this.

So I don't know where the 100$ fee comes from and if it's for real (there are plenty of users complaining on the internet about this or that without understanding what they're doing and how this or that service is charging money from them, so without proof I tend to ignore most of those).

However, I see FTX policy somehow related to Binance's no trading fees for this or that pair (and also an attempt to increase FTX user base) and I think that it is only a temporary policy.
1996  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Lost 270 dollar in roullete plan on revenge on: November 07, 2022, 09:26:10 AM
I plan to revenge and withdrawed 1000 usd from my bank to make big bets and win much more.

This is the usual mindset that makes people lose al their belongings at gambling. Obviously, a wrong mindset.
Gambling should go by the "lost some, won some" mindset. If you lost some today, you'll also play tomorrow (or whenever) only money you can afford to lose. If you win, great, if you lose, no biggie.
BTW: the "lucky people like me" idea may be a result of simply not playing too many rounds. Keep gambling at the fun level, else you may become very unlucky, and you don't want that.
1997  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is the market looking at another Terra Luna, Are your funds safe at FTX on: November 07, 2022, 09:22:46 AM
While FTT is expected to have... difficulties, especially after CZ announcement that they'll (slowly) sell some huge amounts, I don't know of actual withdrawal issues from FTX.
However, it's always well known that keeping funds at centralized exchanges is risky, so at least those keeping their money there for no good reason should really consider withdrawing to their own wallets, especially as I've read that FTX has not withdrawal fees (I don't know though whether this is for Bitcoin only or other crypto too).
1998  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Has Ledger stopped updating apps for the Nano S on: November 07, 2022, 09:16:26 AM
This is where the dilemma arises: buy now Trezor model T or wait for the release of updated model, which, the release of which may happen just in the period of these 2-3 years, when Nano S will be supported. It seems to me that in this situation, one should not rush, because nothing critically unacceptable in the case of model S is happening now, but I think that there is already a reason to look at other models as a fallback. If Nano S+ or Nano X doesn't interest you.

I agree, there's no rush at all. Nano S will not be phased out neither too soon, neither too abruptly, and during that time many better and cheaper models can be launched.
And not only by known or new HW makers, but also independent projects like SeedSigner.

So while looking for fallback cannot hurt, it's early for that ; new HW will most probably be launched meanwhile and then one will have to take a close look again.
1999  Local / Romānă (Romanian) / Re: Payment Unit for Labor Absolution is still alive in 2022 on: November 07, 2022, 09:05:28 AM

2000  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Crypto exchanges charging for inactive accounts . Do you support this ? on: November 06, 2022, 07:50:03 PM
And btw, there's something CEX has and DEX doesn't: crypto cards. Again, banking, as I said Wink
That's a good point. Still better to use DEXs and spend bitcoin directly though, rather than using yet another centralized third party to switch to fiat on the go. Tongue

I beg to differ, for this only case. With banks being picky in many countries about where the money comes from, this can easily become a problem if one sells Bitcoin.
I find crypto cards useful for those who can't use Skrill and similar.

But maybe I am missing something, my experience is limited.
