School isn't the best example to compare with because as it stands there are too many religions and if only 1 is right then chances of picking the correct one are pretty slim. I mean no offence by this but religion is an accepted mental illness, there's no other way of describing it. Dedicating your whole life and putting it above everything else as a priority is not good, one day you might understand but i doubt it, I'm sure people use it as comfort due to fearing life and death but there's no need. That's a very good question. The answer appears to be that backwards ideas in largely Muslim countries prevent modern economic progress. Many of these backwards ideas seem to be related to "actually following" codes of behavior and codes of thought in the Koran. Curiously, it appears that JudeoChristian cultures do not "actually follow" codes of conduct in the Old Testament. Somewhere in between the codes of the New and the Old testaments there grows some encouragement of individual thought and identity, as opposed to the cultism of Islam.
