On the front end f shapeshift, it says there is a minimum amount for each currency. This minimum amount is not listed in the API anywhere. How is this minimum value calculated. Is it pegged to a USD value? I noticed the bitcoin minimum is 4218 satoshis, which is about 1 penny. Are all currencies set to a one penny minimum?
Also, I'm unfortunately going to have to remove shapeshift.io integration from my project because of the new minimum amount requirement. The way my app works, is it sends lots and lots of small amounts from many senders, but to a relatively small number of recipients. Most shifts from me will be $0.05 and less. Most probably under $0.01
Maybe if shapeshift.io worked such that it keeps shifts under the minimum internally until the total amount exceeds the minimum, then makes the deposit.
Hello Coinsentry, The minimum is based on the miner fee of the outgoing currency. Basically, if there is a miner fee of 0.0001 BTC on the output, it doesn't make sense to accept any transaction that would only send 0.0001 BTC. Our rule is we set the min at 2x the fee of the output currency. Accepting an order below that would mean more than half the user's output value would be eaten by the miner fee alone, and it just doesn't seem reasonable to do such transactions. We can consider your suggestion to accept small amounts until they exceed the maximum, but honestly the total volume of such transactions means it's not really economically rational to spend time on such a thing. I decided to try the ShapeShift service, since I've linked to it from the Just-Dice FAQ and figured I should make sure it's worth linking to.
I told it I wanted to deposit CLAM and receive BTC. It told me to deposit up to 107 CLAM, so I did. The BTC arrived within about 30 seconds. So far, so good.
Then I clicked 'another exchange'. It reset the current pair to BTC->LTC. It would be nice if it could remember the pair I most recently used and default to that. I'm not likely to ever buy LTC. So I set it to CLAM->BTC again, and it told me to deposit up to 0.03 CLAM. That's about 5 cents' worth of CLAM.
Hi Dooglus, good questions, as always! The issue is just one of how much inventory of CLAMS we hold. We've had a decent number of CLAMS transactions over the past few days, so we're going to increase our holdings and this will increase the deposit limit and reduce the issue that you're having. "Did I use up all the available conversion power of the site in a single transaction? " Yes, basically. We'll solve that by holding more inventory. "It seems to be doing the exchange on Poloniex on demand, so why can't it just adjust the price it is offering and let me exchange more?" The exchange is not happening with Poloniex, but directly with ShapeShift... thus our level of inventory is important. (if we just routed the order through poloniex it would take more than an hour at least to process orders) " Or is the on-exchange BTC earmarked separately for each currency pair, so there's BTC available for buying LTC, but none for buying CLAM?" Nope, not earmarked for certain pairs. " Or maybe even it sees I'm from the same IP as before, and is limiting me but not other people?" Nope, IP doesn't matter. Fundamentally there is always a tension between price/speed/deposit limits. Increasing one often means scaling back another (ie - deposit limit can increase but we can't offer as good of a price, etc). We can combat this generally by just holding more inventory of coins, but that has business costs as well. So it's a careful balancing act. Regardless, more CLAMS on the way! |

Well that makes sense. Are you able to tell us what the avg size of deposits or withdrawals is?
They really come in all sizes. I suspect that the bigger traders probably aren't going to be in the market for your service because they're more price sensitive, and I assume you charge a fee on top of the exchange fee. Also, a lot of the trading that happens on JD happens in the form of off-chain transactions - one user with "tip" another some CLAM from his balance in exchange for (real) bitcoin. That's a reasonable solution for two users who trust each other or who can find a mutually acceptable escrow. I would think your service would be more useful for newcomers who want an easy way to get started without the tedious business of finding someone to deal with. Having said that, 1 BTC or so is probably enough for most. You can only switch the pair if you haven't already moved to step 2. Before moving to step 2, specify the currency you want to deposit and what you want to receive.
I was mostly wanting to switch so that I could see the exchange rate in each direction, and from that calculate your mark-up. But now I notice the rate is shown as soon as I select the currency pair. I'm not sure why I didn't notice that before. As of right now I'm seeing: 1.00 CLAM = 0.00559481 BTC 1.00 BTC = 132.5177 Multiplying these together: 0.00559481 * 132.5177 = 0.7414 So if I trade BTC to CLAM and back again, I end up with 74% of my starting amount of BTC. Is that because of the market spread? Or are you really charging a 13.9% fee in each direction? 100 - (0.00559481 * 132.5177) ^ 0.5 * 100 = 13.9 It's because of market spread and the issue of market depth. ShapeShift prices coins without slippage (so your whole order processes at one price, instead of sliding through an order book). The less deep the coin's exchange market, the wider that spread will be. To compare it, you should do a couple BTC worth of instant exchange at a normal exchange, into CLAMS and then back to BTC, and see what happens. Consider also the time delay it takes to get money into and then back out of the exchange (can be 30 mins to a couple hours). |

I would like to, but all I see is:  Just try a reload of page if it ever happens, sorry about that. OK, I reloaded, set it to change CLAM to BTC (an annoying box popped up when I was trying to select 'BTC'. It told me you weren't available right now. I guess I hovered too close to the bottom right corner). Then I saw this: It's weird that it says to sent "any amount of Clams" but then says "Deposit Limit: 62.5032 CLAM 0.02666667 CLAM". Are those the maximum and minimum amounts I can send? 62 CLAM is around 0.4 BTC which is less than a lot of people are looking to spend. I tried switching the currency pair the other way, to change BTC to CLAM, but couldn't see how. Hitting 'back' on the browser takes me back to the first screen but the currency menus aren't active any more. I ended up having to reload the page. Then after I put in my CLAM address it told me "Deposit Limit: 0.5893 BTC 0.00000000 BTC" so again the maximum is quite low.
