That gives me an idea for a fun website. What if someone took a site and put the current price of bitcoins as a picture of bananas. Over time the resolution of the image would have to get bigger as you added more bananas

"Bitcoin is like a spoon. It can be used to do good or evil."
307  Economy / Speculation / Only 10 thousand people in the world can have 1100 bitcoins at this moment on: March 06, 2013, 12:35:38 AM
So we are at just under 11 million bitcoins released.  Many bitcoins are currently "unrecoverable" . I have no idea how many that is. But when you see those numbers it isn't hard to fathom what could happen with the price in the future.

Also consider that bitcoins might not experience the same technology curve that others have. Because bitcoin is a borderless currency as soon as it catches on the entire world is competing. It's not just some small or single country we are talking about.

Maybe 100 by the end of the year isn't that outlandish.
308  Economy / Speculation / Re: I am about to do something massivley stupid on: March 05, 2013, 06:23:33 AM
Actually if you are in a low income tax bracket (something like below 32k in the US.. or maybe it's 36k.. somewhere in there) you don't pay taxes on capital gains. And bitcoin appreciation would be a capital gain I am pretty sure.

Seriously, can I quote you on that!? Lol!

That is fantastic if it is true. Now my next question would be: If I make more than $36k, in bitcoin value, does that mean I am still considered 'low income'?

the capital gains are added to whatever other income you had. So to avoid taxes you would just not sell more than 30k worth in a year...

Wait, what?

You are 26, live with your parents, and don't pay rent? Holy shit, you are the epitome of a man-child.

And now you want to take out a loan to invest in a speculative internet currency with the relative risk level of a penny stock.....and you see nothing wrong with this?

What. The. Fuck.

In that case he is in a position to take on risk that some others might not be. You could argue that what he is doing is wrong from some moral standpoint but look at it from a financial one.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2013/mar/04/bitcoin-currency-of-vice

Bitcoin currency of vice. Even without doing much research it is relatively easy to prove that the main use of bitcoins isn't drugs. It's as a store of value (like gold). Anyways... if journalists did any research they might find this survey http://spacedruid.com/2013/02/26/the-demographics-of-bitcoin-part-1/ which is actually an attempt at figuring out what bitcoins are used for.

Isn't it funny that mainstream publications can just claim that bitcoin is a currency of vice and that it's mainly used for drugs when they don't even really know that or have evidence to support such statements?

I'm not saying the article is completely inept though.
313  Economy / Economics / Re: Right now it seems like everyone is hoarding... on: March 05, 2013, 04:12:24 AM
I read that the guy who owns bitcoinstore.com is actually keeping the coins lol (rather than sell them immediately through bitpay or coinbase)
314  Economy / Speculation / Re: I am about to do something massivley stupid on: March 05, 2013, 04:11:03 AM
I think it's a good idea IF you plan on paying the payments and just keeping the coins as savings. What you are effectively doing is just "locking in" the price at about what it is now. I am almost tempted to do the same because what if the price rises to 100? It sure would be nice to be locked in at paying 37 if that is the case. But who knows

this may be just personal preference........ but I want bitcoin.org to look and feel a LOT like the heroku website.

www.heroku.com  . So slick and gorgeous.

Is it really a good idea to allow reversals though? It could increase your own costs and the point of having reputation in feedback is so that people can make educated decisions.
318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ZeroHedge on: March 03, 2013, 10:52:31 PM
the cool thing about bitcoin is that there is no need to get into arguments about its legitimacy. Time will tell who was wiser. And if bitcoin fails due to outside forces trying to kill it (such as government) I still wouldn't consider those who support it unwise... just possibly "too optimistic". If bitcoin is "too powerful for it's own good"... that's not really the fault of bitcoin.

319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / bitcoin medical marijuana opportunity? on: March 03, 2013, 07:48:01 PM
http://www.buzzfeed.com/emofly/my-life-as-a-professional-cannabis-baker

from the article

Quote
It's tough to build a business because the marijuana industry is so unstable. The conflicting state and federal laws are hard to navigate. Banks don't want to deal with you. You can't get a checking account because a lot of banks have been threatened at the federal level and are told they are not to hold funds for anyone involved in the business of medical marijuana. You don't know if the dispensaries you're working with are going to be around next week. That's scary. In my former profession, I was used to networking and finding a group of people to work with. People in this industry are very protective and isolated, so it's hard to find a community. Even though everything I am doing is legal, it's very hard to do business.

could using bitcoin somehow sidestep these issues?
