3001  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best bitcoin wallet? on: January 04, 2016, 05:16:47 AM
On my desktop I use Multibit. Never had any problems whatsoever.
Currently I don't use a wallet on my mobile, don't trust much my phone i guess Cheesy

I'm never use multibit or offline bitcoin wallet. how is offline bitcoin wallet works ? because bitcoin is online money and how to save your bitcoin with offline wallet ?  Huh
All of Bitcoins and transactions records are saved on the blockchain, not on any devices or computer. Wallets like multibit or mobile one just connect to Bitcoin nodes which save the whole blockchain and verify the transactions for you!

Best "offline" is the paper wallet if you do it you throw it in security deposit box.  You send to it and have the private key if you ever need to import to spend (at that point you lose security though).

Some do things like RPI that is offline just only plug in when spending.  But I think paper wallet is easiest to understand.  If you search it lots of good info to do it right and secure.

You will see me using it with my Ledger Nano hands on - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1305888.0

I agree with you there. I've been meaning to pick one up and review it myself. I just haven't done so yet so I didn't recommend it on my site.

Ive tried 3 so far.  The Ledger Nano I still need to do the part about android usage as it is a nice feature.  So I'm almost done with ones I have on finishing hand's on.  Just will be sharing bits of info after using them more and more afterwards.

But I really like hardware wallets after starting this project to do some hands on.  The ability to spend and feel safe I really like.  It's replaced my hot wallet personally at this point and I leave more then I ever would have with a hot wallet and sleep very well.

And I'm not trying to take away from other wallets.  I think paper wallets are very valid if done right.  So I want to make it clear I'm not anti paper wallets or anything. I realize different wallets are good for different uses.
3003  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Pics of Huge Hosting Mine Under Construction, (Dec 2015 Update: We've moved) on: January 04, 2016, 04:59:03 AM
The more I read this thread and the more I hear from others via email and PM's [who had their gear at the old place], the more I realize ASICSPACE is not worth the risk!  DO NOT send your gear [ESPECIALLY ANY SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF GEAR] to them for hosting.  Do not pay any significant amount of money up front either.  The more I hear it's just not worth the risk.

The old place was owned by an HVAC company.  They provided the place and provided most [if not all] of the capital up front to setup the hosting.  It sounds more to me the HVAC owner was tired of putting up with their IRRESPONSIBLE ANTICS and wanted to lock them out of the place.  It sounds like ASICSPACE and the other guy are just young punks who don't give a shit about responsibility and good work ethics.  If you want to take the risk, it's your prerogative.  Don't say you haven't been warned!!!

ASICSPACE and the other guy had a good opportunity to do good for themselves and the community but they mucked it up.  After all I've heard, their ass should be in jail.  If it was me, I would have done my best to get their ass in jail.  They are fortunate some of the others who were screwed from their irresponsible and childish behavior are more forgiving than I am.

It's not worth suing them either because they don't have shit to lose.  Just stay away from them and you'll be alright.

Interesting thanks for posting.  After that lawsuit got posted it seemed to do a complete reverse on how it looked.  Sad as they had a good price.

Reading about lawsuit and some of the post's I think have scared me off sadly.  Guess I will keep looking I would love a good and cheap place 5-6 cent's that I can send some older gear to sometime.  Or it's looking more likely I will just sell off old gear eventually and buy new gear or BTC.  Kinda scary with someone else hosting you gear when reading this.
3004  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: NEWB Alert with a Lot of Questions on: January 04, 2016, 04:53:45 AM
I went ahead and bought a usb "wallet." I thought I'd attach it to the MacBook. Is this the correct configuration?

On this I'm guessing you mean hardware wallet.  Which one did you buy? If you can tell us that we can help a lot more on configuration.

Also on your other thing I would get a wireless access point that does all the work without having to use a laptop.   Just best option over time I think vs running laptop 24x7.
3005  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Would there be any benefit in using a low-end miner to create vanity addresses? on: January 04, 2016, 04:49:43 AM
I still run vanitygen on occasion, mostly for fun. I don't have any dedicated "GPU rigs" but I tend to like multi-screen setups so I have decent cards in my two main machines anyway - capable of driving 15 screens between 'em. Vanity addresses can be nice to have for promotional stuff or things which you want to be memorable, but I think the monetization of vanity address generation (via pools and such) is just about dead?

I think so the problem with vanity pools is it relies on customers to buy the vanity addresses.  There are no block rewards, nothing to make money besides charging the person, and then distribute it between miners.   I think there was one site still up.

I found it in bookmarks I never did use it so I can't vouch as far as security  but http://bitcoinvanitygen.com/ is still doing it appears.  So it's almost dead.  Most do it their self like you mentioned.   Just a lot easier to know it's secure.
3006  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: How quiet is the Avalon 4.1, really? on: January 04, 2016, 04:42:39 AM
I'm considering upgrading my bedroom silent warmer, which are 3x Antminer S1, doing 400GH/s combined, at under 20dB. So how quiet is the Avalon really? Can it do 800~1000GHs at 20dB or so?

No 20db is not going to happen.

But  it will go around 30 db at 800gh

They are pretty quiet as far as miners go and considering the amount of hashing rate you get.  They can be pushed to be very efficient and quiet.  That is what I did wit my set of 3.

Some day I will finally sell them.  Just have not got to it yet as I like them so dang much.
3007  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Would there be any benefit in using a low-end miner to create vanity addresses? on: January 04, 2016, 04:40:44 AM
I'm pretty sure the question has been asked several times over the last two years or so, and the answer always comes back with "no, address generation and bitcoin mining are very different algorithms/processes so the ASIC would not be able to help you".

Ah, I figured. Sorry, I was having trouble searching (too many keywords). Thanks for the quick response though.

It's GPU's that do the job on creating vanity addresses.  Time can depend pretty dramatic on the rules you set and how long of vanity you want.

But I kept a rig long ago thinking I would use it for vanity addresses... never used it.  Looking back I should have sold it like the rest of my GPU's.  But at least I kept 2 cheaper cards I sold the better ones long long ago.
3008  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: January 04, 2016, 04:38:32 AM
Your ambient temp seems to high -> minera shows 143 degree Fahrenheit

That's the temp of the laptop itself though, not the miner sticks.  It runs hot, always has.  I think it's a Sony thing.  The fan is barely going and it will sometimes get up near 200+ degrees and sounds like a jet engine when I'm running a bunch of stuff on it.  Had it for 3+ years though and no problems with CPU or GPU and I use to do windows 7 development on it, and anything microsoft is a resource hog.

Honestly get a RPI and you will be so thankful.  You don't need a ton of power off a machine and could save your laptop some stress of really hot.. that does not sound good.

But you could even use minera on RPI.  For a little investment your power cost vs a laptop will be decent.  And RPI's are pretty cheap.  I highly suggest getting one vs your laptop.

And very cool to see the pod in the works.  Thanks for keeping us in the loop I love watching your dev process.
3009  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 31 to Jan 12 Diff thread picks closed. on: January 04, 2016, 04:33:28 AM
Nice

Today 144 block were solved and 144 as expected which means +0%

About time we get a break from these difficulty increases.

Love to have news like this much better what I thought this week would be with day's like this.  But very good day with that.

Now only if price of BTC could rise from 430's seems like we are kinda stuck there.

430 is fine if we rip a -1 or +1 diff

I'm not sure we will get that lucky though. With past few weeks i just don't see it going down that low I think likely we will see more.  The work week is starting now. So we could see some miners going in for all we know.

And I hope I'm wrong though.  If it drops to that this week I will be extremely happy to say the least.
3010  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Solo mining question on: January 04, 2016, 04:30:29 AM
Don't worry, if you have free electricity then you'll be fine and eventually find a block. I for myself am running an Antminer U3 solo and I know a have little chances but still, I prefer to take them!

Not necessarily I think miners have a lifespan of a few year's.   So plugging in a miner even if free electricity unless you have a lot of hash, just is not guarenteed you will hit a block.

The more hash added to network the less likely.  So if anything the longer it takes the less chance of you hitting it as network growth.
3011  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 21 cents per kw, Any way to mine? on: January 04, 2016, 04:28:28 AM
dont forget that in 2016 btc income from mining will be half

but the value will be also very high, the current value already is about 100% more than what it was, so easily at this point will not count anything, incomparison when we were at 230

The price of bitcoin is not certain to rise. That is just a speculation. But the blockreward is going to halve, that is certain.

For this it is a big risk to start mining now.
Sure you can profit easily for 6 months.

But.. then what?

6 months in mining is a HUGE amount of time.  There will be a next gen likely in that amount of time.  I mean everything changes in that amount.  I likely will sell some miners in next 6 month's of old generation (keeping S7/Avalon 6). But sell them to very low electricity or free electricity users.

Also you act like 1 time profit is not good.  I would say take 1 time profit and then look at doing it or look other things  next.  You don't pass if your for sure you will profit.  But mining has not been for sure for a long time, it's just very individual.
3012  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: State of mining on: January 04, 2016, 04:23:16 AM
I don't mine, I use faucets. Much easier.
Just out of curiosity, how much do you earn by doing that?
Can't be much, right...

Begging is NOT earning.

Edit:  Let me rephrase that.  Taking advantage of the charity of others is not earning.

meh faucets arent really charity.  they have ads and stuff, and they give out small amounts.  a good faucet should make money.

They are not worth the time.   They pay pennies per hour.  I know people say what if BTC is worth X times in 5 years... it could be a ton!

Fact is you are better off buying 5 dollars and spend that time on something else.   I don't think faucets have much to do with state of mining though.  It has nothing to do with mining.
3013  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A Basic Overview of Storage Practices on: January 04, 2016, 01:13:10 AM
thats a nice poster that all new comers should see, Im sold on hardware wallets but untill i can bite the bullet and buy one i will be sticking to good old trusted papyrus.

A Ledger HW.1 is $15 on Purse. They shipped mine for free and I paid with Bitcoin. How can you not bite?

I suggest getting the starter kit aswell.  The offline OS to start the wallet off right really is nice.   Keeps your seed words safe by using it and writing in book.

You will see me using it with my Ledger Nano hands on - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1305888.0

Check out Trezor if you have an android phone and don't trust phone (which is pretty responsible). - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1298917.msg13321397#msg13321397

Ledger also works with android phones I'm working on a guide for it currently.
3015  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Pics of Huge Hosting Mine Under Construction, (Dec 2015 Update: We've moved) on: January 04, 2016, 01:03:29 AM
I actually PM'd ASICSPACE last week and offered him the opportunity to increase his sales by way of me stopping telling people the facts about how his place is a ripoff, and my compensation for this service, which could ultimately increase his business, would have been 2 BTC.  He offered me a discount on one of their hosting plans.  First of all, I don't have any ASICs, and second of all, I sure as hell wouldn't send them to him if I did!  He didn't even offer me a tiny fragment of a BTC, claiming he couldn't afford 2 BTC.

What an asswad.

So you saying you tried to blackmail them into paying you?  That is pretty lame to say the least... to ask for payment to stop you posting info.  If you had lost money on it then I could see it.... but not losing money and trying to force money just is bad.

I am really surprised you posted about this.   Do you do this to others as well?

If you read his other posts in the past they are all pretty much like that. Sometimes its hard to tell if he actually means what he is saying or is he saying it to be funny and as a joke.

Its impossible to tell emotions with text.

It does instantly subtract pretty much all he said knowing there as a motive of blackmail.   I am happy they did not pay him off.  I wonder if anyone actually does pay trolls.   I just don't see it.

It is sad but people like him are the reason self-moderated threads are sometimes needed.

some new pics and updates on the main thread! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1248914.0

Alway's love new pictures to look at Smiley.  Any idea when we will see one with the black color that was selected?

I'm looking forward to seeing that color on PCB.

Here ya go, just got these pics from the manufacturer!

*saving space from pic

Really like the black!   It's going to turn out to be a nice looking miner it seems like.   Not many use black which I think makes it that much cooler.

I have still been playing with the prototype some and it is still working away.  So hope for good things from these Smiley
3017  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Hands On] Bitmain AntMiner S7 - Batch 8 - Notlist3d on: January 04, 2016, 12:55:51 AM
hope you dont mind me posting this:

5min test at -10C  Grin

No problem at all.  This is for any batch 8.  That is very low on testing but seems to work fine which is nice.

Lowest I have got is around 30F or so but no issues running in it.   Also started mining around December 19, 2015. or so and no fault's or errors which is nice.  So guess were like 1/2 month of running great.
3018  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntRouter R1: 1st wireless networking device with bitcoin mining chip on: January 04, 2016, 12:51:10 AM
how many U3's can the R1 support, on a 4port non-powered hub? 10-port powered hub?

I've seen 3 reported as the max, and I haven't been able to test more than 3 at a time. I'm not certain if this is a limitation of the R1 or a side effect of using an unpowered hub. When I had more U3s to play around with, I had issues running more than 3 units on an unpowered hub. I've read that users have been able to get more than 3 running on different systems with a powered hub, so it's possible it may work on an R1 as well.

Mikestang - is the fan still running on your dead U3? If not, you may be able to fix it by replacing the fan. I was sent a return unit with a dead fan that wouldn't hash(looks like the board is detecting the fan before powering up the chip). I replaced it with an old rbox fan and it's hashing away perfectly now.

On my 3 I have a cheap unpowered hub and seems to work fine.  Dont have a 4th to try anymore.  But 3 U3's definitely works.

And ofcourse I am using your custom firmware so I don't have to mess with zombies.  I do have some fan's running as my solo mining area which has U3's and compac's going.  But it does not take a ton to cool my solo area.
3019  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Customs! How much did they ripped off your miner at your country? on: January 04, 2016, 12:47:21 AM
Who are you referring to as "they"?  I see it as the country causing these crazy fee's as it's their law's/import taxes.

I know some view companies as but guy for not shipping lower.  Just curious if this is pointed twords the companies or countries as the "they"?
