3022  Other / Meta / Re: Merit system= Rubbish posts on: March 31, 2018, 12:55:35 PM
The idea behind introducing the merit system was to enforce the users to post quality threads, encouraging them to engage with a conversation rather than making comments here and there for signature bounties.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

This was the whole idea.

So, instead of complaining about the system when not post something that will give value to the community.

If you care about the community then someday you will forget about everything and will land your hand for helping others and improving your personal developments. I been there by the way.

So, just chill  Smiley

Merit system= Rubbish posts = 0 merits

While I understand why you are upset with someone cheating, aren't there more important things going on with this forum? How is this getting so much prime attention when hundreds of millions of dollars worth of scams have gone through this forum with people being ripped off every day.
- I am not sure if there are any requirements of being 18 and 18+ to join this forum. If not then there should be. If you do not spend your money with responsibility then what can other do? You are an adult and you live with the choice you make.

PS: Merit is a big deal for this forum. I'm sure you are missing something here.

Some training and guide may point these kind of users to the right directions. If we had a step by step tutorial or a auto bot to teach the users the basics of using the forum then it could be handy for the newbies.

Aren't the basics covered in the stickies? Isn't this forum free to do whatever with users that do not adhere to the do's and don't's covered in the stickies?

Posting 24 times the same phrase is no longer naive, that's abuse.

(or were you referring to me and my half full OP? Smiley)

I was referring to the user mentioned in the original post. What I meant is a step by step wizard type beginners guide.

These were fairly interesting reads. I get that if twi people know each other and are exchanging merit it's not as unacceptable if they know the person is going to be a good poster. If I had a friend who signed up here and has posted well for a few months and is making good quality post, I'd give them merit to rank up for their next rank and I believe that'd be fair.

The idea of merit is rewarding good posts, simple. If a friend make a good post then other one can give him/her merit but what actually happening is (in most cases), all these so called friend groups as simply exchanging merits in between each others. The posts are awarding merits in between friends (in most case again) are usual lazy posts.

However, no one you have accused here has explicitly denied doing it so stick to what you're doing OP.
-I am trying my best to be biased with anything when I tag the merit abusers.

There isn't really any rule against it per se and it's not really enforced at an admin or staff level, so it's more of a community issue right now much like scams and other such shady behaviour. As far as I'm aware the only thing that is currently prohibited is merit sources selling their merit though I'm not sure what the punishment for that would be other than them being removed as merit source.

-I need more information on this. I am trying to get it from hilariousetc
3029  Other / Meta / Re: Any penalty for selling merit? Seeking hilariousetc's feedback please on: March 30, 2018, 04:07:11 PM

What about on selling merits? It only says: disallowed but no clue about the penalty.
Can we expect any update on this statement about selling merits by regular members like us who are not merit source.

What action will be taken if a regular member sells (to anyone) or exchange merits (with their friends).

I am seeking your attention (@hilariousetc) since FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit is your(Alt) post.

Thanks

PS: I just changed the title of the topic just to get your (@hilariousetc) attention.

3030  Economy / Reputation / Re: Injustice!!! Red Trust! on: March 28, 2018, 04:26:09 PM
But is this really abuse? For example, on the first day, Lauda and Atriz exchanged 80 merits between them.
http://dev.martinlawrence.ca/bpip/profile.aspx?p=Lauda

On my own profile, I have sent 20 merit to a user who has sent me 8 back.
http://dev.martinlawrence.ca/bpip/profile.aspx?p=Vod

Even the person that left you negative trust has the same behavior on his account with TMAN.
http://dev.martinlawrence.ca/bpip/profile.aspx?p=The%20Pharmacist

Theymos stated negative trust should only be left for extreme cases.  How do we determine extreme?

IMO if someone is going to red paint another for leaving reciprocal merit, they should do it evenly and not pick and choose.  :/

First few days after merit was introduced there were a lot of confusions on how to use them so it was obvious that people were making mistakes. But as the days are going everyone now should be aware and careful about sending merits to others. I wonder thinking still people are sending 50 merits (today). Tell me does this one worth 50 merits or may be a positive tagging

Seems like I red tagged you as well.

Instead of making a post about it why not you just follow the post link I left on the red trust.

Doing this(making a post about it) is not gonna help you.

I can see you abused the merit system no doubt about it.

Good luck.

as I know, having multiple accounts on the forum is not prohibited. The only rule is not to participate in the same bounty. But I can be wrong.

You were tagged for abusing merit. Why are you talking ImageLoading...
3033  Other / Meta / Re: Thin (!) strategy to earn more Merit - Drama Queen (aka alia) busted Finally!!! on: March 28, 2018, 03:36:47 PM
Dude you should be focused on yourself and stop trying to figure out why some peeps are getting more merits than others as people give merits based on how moved they are by a given post. You can't tell people whom they should or shouldn't merit. It's their merit and entitled to their gifting. The merit system is flawed and I think you can't do much about it.

What am I doing wrong?

Clearly merit farming/trading is happening.

Thanks TheQuin, very interesting discovery. I don't pay attention to this before reading your thread. One more thing I learned from the forum and its high-ranked members.

Hourly updates to activity are probably something to do with cron jobs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cron
~

Corn job:
In short corn job is scheduling a set of tasks for a system that runs on the server. It's automatic and useful for system maintenance. In many cases a system needs certain tasks to perform periodically. Setting up a corn job is helpful in those cases.

i.e: Consider a membership site with hundreds of members are expiring their paid membership everyday. Deactivating them one by one will need human resources to maintain the system. If the system can perform the same task by checking periodically who are expiring and can deactivate automatically then it saves both money and time.

3036  Other / Meta / My steps to deal with the merit users on: March 27, 2018, 01:45:45 PM
A proper process must be done and thorough investigation is a must before tagging someone, I must agree that leaving a negative feedback without a hard evidence to support a claim is somehow improper and inhumane.

That's why when I tag someone (although my tagging does not count since I am not a DT member) with redTrust I leave proper evidence with option of a second chance.

ImageLoading...

1. The idea is with proper evidence mark someone with red trust.
2a. When they notice they will come back to you with evidence that they are not abusing merit. You remove the red trust once convinced
2a. They may come back to you saying it was a mistake by them (they come up with all these funny excuses. i.e: Not aware, friends account, I am a student give me another chance etc etc) and they won't do it again then give them a second chance.
Keep a log of them admitting their mistake (What I thought is best, to give them a neutral trust with having saying that the user made their first mistake and admitted it and committed that they will never do the same)
3. Remove the red trust.

with enough evidence.

This is how I am dealing now.

Caution: Don't try it with your main account unless you are DT or them kind of member.  You don't want to see your account is red tagged like me  Sad
3037  Other / Meta / Re: Email confirmation on signup on: March 27, 2018, 01:17:30 PM
case 1 just change the email on the dirty account and make a new account.

That should not restrict you from making another account as he just used your email address but the account was made with his own IP address. So you can simply create another account without any problems since your IP has a clean history in the forum. And if you wish to use the same email for your new account, do what @TheQuin said.

Hmm... I wonder why did not I think of that before. Seriously I missed the trick first hand  Undecided

I wish there was a fool somewhere to use one of my email few years ago  Grin

Anyway In general I think asking for no email was ok at the time of registration. So far I know unless you change an email address you can not create another account giving the same email address. If someone needs notifications then that's another case. They will not give a false email coz they need information in their inbox.

Since we already have a unique identifier, we do not need to play around with email.

The unique identifier is the username, ...

3038  Other / Meta / Re: Email confirmation on signup on: March 27, 2018, 10:52:37 AM
While potential scammers could use your email to register an account here, it wouldn't be hard for you to gain control over that account and eliminate the malicious use by the scammer. Simply click on the "Forgot password" link on the sign in page, and you'll receive an email with a unique code that will enable you to change your password.

What if I discover someone used my email address and created an account back in early 2013? Now I heard about BitcoinTalk forum and I wanted to join. I figured out the email has already been used. Taking your suggestion I reset my password and login. Then I see...

1. The account is Legendary account with rad tagged from all DT members plus from a lot of regular members. The account is a mess.
2. The account is a Legendary account with and included in DT
.
.
n. There could be nth scenarios.

In both cases (1 and 2, forget about the rest) for the forum I have no idea what to do since I am a newbie. Case 1 is an injustice for me since originally it was not me, Case 2 might be a blessing but again it's not me originally.

Will I not face a great problem to keep my real impression here?

PS: I'm playing with my imagination again, It does not mean that in reality it's impossible   Grin
3039  Economy / Scam Accusations / Wondering... Am I wrong? on: March 27, 2018, 10:34:30 AM
I am doubting the legitimacy of this project

All the users please take extra caution (in my opinion)

1. Checked the domain creation date: Few days ago (2018-03-23T00:41:34Z) the domain has been created. Today is 27th March 2018
2. Who are these people (all of them) in the team? There are no linked to verify the persons are really in the team or not. I tried google search and seems like nothing there as well.
3. Pre-sale starting in less than 2 days!

Most-likely, someone behind this whole scam planning stuff. Created a website, created a BitcoinTalk account, Created a telegram account and trying to get some ETH from the innocent lazy people out there. This guy/group will surly scam peoples hard earning money because of your ignorance.

PS: The whole post based in my opinion, I might me wrong judging them but some of the clear evidence I can not ignore. My advice is dig a little before joining the project. If you find satisfactory then go for it. I just wanted to enlighten the community with some facts.

Good luck.

Wondering why SMF does not have this simple feature.

I don't think it is a limitation of the forum software but an expression of theymos' desire to allow complete anonymity to forum users. When I signed up there was no requirement to provide an email address at all (I don't know if that is still the case).

In this case I think instead of email address why not use a bitcoin address that you own. A bitcoin address is also a uniqueID.

For any system everyone needs a Unique ID to identify a user. That is why system developers use email address since every email address is unique.

It really make sense when it comes to anonymity. Agencies can trace the email address to find private information about someone (if they provide to the email provider of-course).

Asking for email address seems pointless in my opinion at the time of registration then. It can only create kiosk.
