Does anyone use DVDs anymore? Maybe you meant to say Linux Live DVD USB? Nowadays it is rare to find CD/DVD drives.
I specifically meant a DVD because of it's write-once characteristics. You can buy an external USB DVD burner starting at $20, and that's what I use for this purpose. I still have a pile of empty DVD-R disks, and another pile with all Linux distributions I've burned in the past.
3042  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Mixin Safe: A Convenient and Decentralized Multisig + MPC + Timelock solution on: October 02, 2023, 01:59:04 PM
The CEO stated that the timelock will only expire if the vulnerabilities are found and fixed
I admit I don't understand the technical details of how it works, and it was quite complicated, but my assumption was that the timelock is something that can't be changed once it's set. I assumed it was based on cryptography, but judging by your comment it's completely centralized.
That confirms what I knew already: don't trust things you don't understand Smiley It reminds me of the "ETH DAO smart contract" where the only person who understood how it works was called "the attacker".
Keep it simple, keep your own keys Smiley

in other words, users can only get their funds back if the hackers refund some of the money, which I doubt will happen.
In which jurisdiction is this even legal? Shouldn't they file for bankruptcy if they're insolvent, isn't that the legal way to handle this?
3043  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Mixin Safe: A Convenient and Decentralized Multisig + MPC + Timelock solution on: October 02, 2023, 11:31:17 AM
Nope! This is the pop up message!

"Server under maintenance "
The promise was for you to be able to recover your funds after a timelock expires, but they didn't explain how to do it. Even worse: if it's set up the way I think it is, they too would be able to have 2 out of 3 keys by the time the timelock expires.
3044  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why red trust me? on: October 02, 2023, 11:19:41 AM
Have Any Chance To Withdraw My Red/Negative Trust..?
When creating such a topic, there are usually 2 options: either the red trust is incorrect, and it might get removed, or, and that happens in most cases, the red trust is deserved and you get a lot more of it. I love democracy Cheesy
3045  Other / Meta / Re: best replies should appear first in a thread. on: October 02, 2023, 11:07:03 AM
If you observe, you will see posts that have 20 merits, 10 merits, 8 merits, 5 merits, 3, 2, even 1 merits in just one post but get merited by different users, both merit source and non-merit source. That is not because the post is not good, but some people who give the post lower merits see the post as not quality enough and those who give the post high merits see the post to be high quality.
Chances are it depends on the amount of sMerit the user has piling up.
3046  Other / Meta / Re: Are posts-reports in the "Report plagiarism..." thread stupid posts? on: October 02, 2023, 10:56:31 AM
The background of my question. Recently one user, let's call him "someone", called my posts-reports in this thread stupid. That, they say, plagiarism on the forum - this is strictly the business of moderators. That it is not our, ordinary users, business.
It sounds like this drama belongs more in Reputation than in Meta. Either way, Mods would have a lot more work if they'd have to find all rule breakers without the help of regular users, which is why the forum has  "Report" link on each post.

Meta-answer: I'm not sure if Mods even check the plagiarism thread, so when I find plagiarism, I post it as reference and also report the post directly. That usually results in a ban.
3047  Economy / Reputation / Re: DT1 and DT2 members who have negative feedback (or are banned) on: October 02, 2023, 08:34:45 AM
Bad and rude language is allowed,
I would agree to disagree with this. Such language is a form of cyberbullying and is expected from various trolls, but certainly not from reputable members. At a minimum, such discussions and posts should be deleted. In the end, I don't see the purpose of the whole thing or that anyone is interested in it.
That would create a slippery slope. Don't get me wrong: I don't particularly like rude language, but it's part of the freedom this forum offers. If you start censoring this, you'll get moderation based on subjective interpretations. Freedom of speech means you can't choose that certain speech isn't allowed.
See my post in censoring foul words or just listen to Rowan Atkinson on free speech.
3048  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: LoyceV's Beginners guide to correct use of the Trust system on: October 02, 2023, 08:04:01 AM
It's pretty obvious GazetaBitcoin and 1miau are taking their vendetta against Ratimov out against anyone who "trusts" Ratimov or is trusted by...
You're making things up again. Excluding one user out of 100 doesn't mean they exclude "anyone". Besides, there's this:
Quote
Trust list for: 1miau (Trust: +8 / =1 / -0) (DT1! (27) 6069 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP) (created 2023-09-30_Sat_05.07h)

1miau Trusts these users' judgement:
94. Ratimov (Trust: +23 / =1 / -1) (DT1! (12) 11570 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP)

1miau's judgement is Trusted by:
68. Ratimov (Trust: +23 / =1 / -1) (DT1! (12) 11570 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP)

Thanks for the context. Too much drama for me though.

[moderator's note: consecutive posts merged]
[LoyceV's note: I didn't break the "multiple posts in a row"-rule, Ratimov deleted his post in between mine]

3050  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC Paper Wallet Recovery on: October 02, 2023, 07:39:36 AM
Some people use an air-gapped computer, but I feel that there are still some ways to access a computer, even if it was disconnected for a while.
Use a Linux Live DVD, run from RAM, without hard drive, without internet, with the curtains closed, and there's nothing left to access after you turn it off.
3051  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Oct 2023] Fees are lower, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: October 01, 2023, 01:20:16 PM
Every node has its own mempool that it recognizes?
That would be my guess. If I'd run a mining pool, I'd make sure to keep every possible transaction. Mining 2 sat/vbyte is still better than mining empty blocks.
3052  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC Paper Wallet Recovery on: October 01, 2023, 11:44:48 AM
What about bitaddress.org as a paper wallet generator.
I've never read anything bad about them. But there are phishing sites out there, so a typo could be costly.

Quote
This time, of course, I will generate the wallet offline.
If the code on the site is compromised, that doesn't help you.

Is this still asking for trouble or should I stick to hardware like ledger?
As much as I don't like Ledger, it's still a better choice.
3053  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unstoppable wallet {User experiences} on: October 01, 2023, 11:32:51 AM
I've noticed it before but never really paid attention until now: I sent a small LTC transaction to my own Unstoppable Wallet, and it didn't show up. Most wallets would show an unconfirmed transaction within seconds. By now, it has 2 confirmations, and it's still not visible. That's not good.

Update: At 27 confirmations, the transaction was still missing. I switched from "From Blockchain" to "API" and it showed up. Something isn't working correctly.
3054  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC Paper Wallet Recovery on: October 01, 2023, 11:10:09 AM
@OP: Please obfuscate the scam wallet site, don't reward them with another backlink from Bitcointalk.

Unfortunately, that and another paper wallet site have been known for (selective) scamming for years. And any recover "offer" is a scam too. That's not how Bitcoin works.
Your money is gone Sad Don't throw more money in the pit.
3055  Other / Meta / Re: best replies should appear first in a thread. on: October 01, 2023, 07:42:57 AM
But nuances arise. How to evaluate the usefulness of posts? Merit is not a 100% objective measure of usefulness. Especially in the hands of merit sources, who sometimes throw away merit in batches left and right, which casts doubt on the usefulness of certain posts.
I've said it before: being a Merit source often feels like a burden. Don't get me wrong: I like being able to reward good posts, but there's an ever increasing pile of sMerit waiting to be distributed. Right now, I have 175 source sMerits again, and it keeps going up. I can't find 175 good posts today, so I send larger amounts. That's how the system is supposed to work: it gives others the chance to distribute it further.

I'm one of those who believe that the merit system is more subjective than objective
Of course it's subjective, but I also believe on average it turns out quite okay.

This is difficult:
I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.
I've also changed my view on this: the Merit system was supposed to stop spammers, not the average poster. If someone isn't a spammer, that's enough for me to Merit them.

I wish I had some merit to splash on your comment. Again, another merit deserving post but I lack the ability to splash any on it and I believe there are others who would've done so too but lack merit.
You can of course apply to be a Merit source. It requires "some" patience though Wink

Who moves to another country without having $300 to spare? This looks very much like a scam selling stolen jewelry.

That link doesn't work, and I didn't change it because the GitHub link is right next to it.

is it possible to run it on mobile offline?
It should work. But I don't realy see the point of being offline: you shouldn't use this for anything serious, not even offline. Besides, disabling the internet on a phone isn't the same as using an air-gapped device that you'll wipe afterwards.

Ahhh, the linux distro wars bitciontalk style.
So far, I see no "war" here, it's still civil. It's all about choices and personal preferences.
