3061  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: my simple way to store bitcoin - is it any good on: November 07, 2020, 07:19:07 PM
Yeah it's safe, from online attacks. As long as you dobt broadcast what it's for, you produce the phrase from an offline computer and test its reproducibility (apsi make a note of the derivation path anywhere as there are a few different standards).
3062  Economy / Speculation / Re: Any relation between market dump and Biden's win? on: November 07, 2020, 06:54:13 PM
Anything different is obviously going to cause some sort of destabilisation in price until people know what Biden is going to do... I'm not sure his win is yet confirmed (or anything really changed... Yet).

3063  Economy / Economics / Re: Here is a conspiracy theory on: November 07, 2020, 05:51:02 PM
The UK will probably have heard immunity by the spring if they keep going as they are.

1% of the country are estimated to be infected with the virus atm... So if we don't get a vaccine fast we won't be having any lockdowns.
3064  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Constructive discussion on the very old thread. on: November 07, 2020, 02:16:12 PM
It's possible to mess up when trying to sort threads and it's also possible someone spam bumped the thread and that user posted on it.

I'm not sure if the second is against the rules, normally when I see it I just ignore it and check it doesn't grow too much further. I think there are also constructive reasons for bumping an old thread (even if forum rules call it flogging the dead) and there's potentially little reason a new thread couldnt have been made referencing the old one...
3065  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum custom GUI ? on: November 07, 2020, 12:04:15 PM
Yeah it looks like they're using another library to do the graphics: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/tree/master/electrum/gui/qt

That being said it realistically wouldn't be too hard just to make a custom module and call stuff from thst but you'd also need a nice looking gui style available (and I'm not sure python has one)...
3066  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why buying btc is hurting our environment like an atomic bomb on: November 07, 2020, 12:34:43 AM
Lol do you have proof of this? I assume you've got a whole dissertation I can read...?

Does it cover the amount of capacity of renewable energy increases in Canada, the nordics and China? You can't get coal and natural gas cheap enough anyway...

Humans lack empathy and produce co2 too and are the biggest producer of it on the earth, we should get rid of them.
3067  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why is the US election vote going so slowly? on: November 06, 2020, 08:48:17 PM
Why is the US election vote going so slowly?

Because of the covid-19 most people voted by mail. Some states have laws allowing them to count those votes in advance, other states have rules to start count them only after election ends. I guess opening those mail takes much more time than counting the regular ballots.

I was watching the news before and they were saying penselvanian mailing ballots could be received 3 days after the election to still be counted - although according to the Democrats Biden ihas already won. Still if their post is efficient as Europe thateans someone could post early in the morning the day after the election (or 2 days after) and still have a balot delivered on time albeit risky...
3068  Economy / Lending / Re: Free lightning tests on: November 06, 2020, 01:41:00 PM
I'm going to bump this now but I'll open a few channels with electrum and test how that works as well as my standard éclair.

Should be available for 10 hours...
3069  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: November 06, 2020, 01:39:40 PM
How do I establish the connection to the grocery store in this scenario? I send LN payments to the node operator. The node operator opens a channel to the grocery store?
That's the "magic" of LN: the network finds a route to send your payment. As long as the node is connected to someone who (is connected to someone who) has a connection to the node you need, it should work. It sometimes fails though, but I assume that gets better over time.
If you haven't tried it yet, just try Smiley A custodial wallet is easiest though, and if you post a payment request for 100 sats, I'll fund it so you can send a few sats to a casino to test it.

I'm about to bump my testing thread in lending so I can help with this too if necessary.

You lost me here. How do I establish the connection to the grocery store in this scenario? I send LN payments to the node operator. The node operator opens a channel to the grocery store?

You could open a channel with either payment processor's node or any other well-connected node which would be able to route your payment. The routing fee should be negligible in the latter case. You wouldn't be able to connect directly to the grocery store since in this scenario, they would be using a third-party to handle your payment. Usually, payment processors offer a few different ways of withdrawing money, so the grocery wouldn't necessary need to use the Lightning Network at all.

I'm considering a payment processor might for close channels on the light Ing network too to maintain their funds so it might be interesting to see how that is dealt with (unless the funds get sent to another channel but thatight need inbound capacity - I say might because things might be changed and the ln is a decentralised protocol so they can change their own thing individually if it's just them connecting to them).
3070  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Big BTC transfer (69,369 BTC) from unknown wallet to unknown on: November 06, 2020, 01:22:57 AM
The auction of the decommissioned BTCs will be epic when the time comes …

Yeah, they only need 3100 more of those to cover the deficit this year, too bad for them there ain't that many coins for that right now.  I just hope they don't go again and split it in large chunks like 10k BTC or something, especially considering the price, it would prevent a lot of companies or individuals out there to bid for them, more competition better prices, fewer reasons to sell next month.

I think they did something like that before and sold it for 2/3rds its value... If the same happens again we might be in for a correction in price at the very least.

They're probably going to be better off finding a company who can strategically shift them for them or try to manage the funds internally selling them off a small amount at a time...
3071  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why is the US election vote going so slowly? on: November 06, 2020, 01:06:15 AM
That's not really correct. In many large counties ballots are being counted round the clock. I doubt "most" went home but feel free to provide proof. Results may not be released through the night in some places though.

in the states they have yet to conclude a result as of the time you made your topic.. the reasons why those states are soo slow is because of the reasons i mentioned

Ok, no proof then, just how you imagine "America" works. This is what's really going on:

ATLANTA — A number of factors may have contributed to Georgia's inability to count all of its votes Tuesday night, despite most polls closing at 7 p.m. ET.

All told, 3.9 million Georgia voters cast their ballots before Election Day — that's nearly as many voters who turned out in 2016 overall. This year, however, after long lines during the state’s primary, many voters chose to vote early to avoid in-person voting on Election Day, out of fears that crowded polling sites would increase exposure to Covid-19.

This change required election officials to tally far more mail-in and early ballots than ever before, including in Fulton County, which includes Atlanta. But in Fulton County, tallying early and mail-in ballots became far more complicated when a pipe burst in State Farm Arena, which is a counting center.

Fulton County election officials halted counting for two hours and announced that they would stop counting for the night at 10:30 p.m. ET. Then, just after 10:30, officials announced they would instead continue counting Tuesday night. However, officials indicated that preliminary vote totals may not become available until after Wednesday.

And this is different from county to county, not just by state.

Are the army/navy nowhere near the polls? I get the US military is strategically behind even the European militaries that were decimated before the second World War but they can't fix a pipe???

Also, fair enough if they had to move but do the other states have as good reasons for a the huge efficiency lag.
3072  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin siezed? Help me understand this on: November 06, 2020, 12:57:08 AM
Someone was forced to give them access to the wallet...

They can't break the encryption on bitcoin and if used well, there's be 3 separate algorithms they'd have to attempt to break before being able to gain access to the funds.
3073  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why is the US election vote going so slowly? on: November 06, 2020, 12:24:53 AM
Because USA is as the name implies 50 different governments all coming together in a huge circle jerk.

I thought a bunch of European countries did similar though splitting stuff into states/municipalities. The UK is split into 200+ counties that have to count stuff individually for a few constituencies at once (though it might be a bit more central).

at midnight UK counts votes non stop through the night.

in america. most counters were sent home at night and didnt start until the morning. they then have multiple systems inplace to triple check the votes are accurate.

some states were given a whole day off before starting a count because the wanted/needed to count it all in one go once the postal votes got delivered.

I think our postal vote deadline is a month before the actual election (or at least a week).

And yeah im pretty sure Germany and universities are still telling us not to use any form of automated counting machines (for fairly reasonable assumptions).

Do their counters take the votes too then? Most other countries should have a separate team that counts it than taking the ballots otherwise that's a lot of work...
3074  Other / Politics & Society / Why is the US election vote going so slowly? on: November 05, 2020, 10:16:32 PM
Is this a normal thing for the US... I'm confused.

The UK counted 30 million ballots in 10 hours for the referendum in 2016 with a population of 60 million so I don't understand why it's so slow. Even for general elections here, it rarely takes more than 24 hours for the votes to come through and we normally know the winner by 3pm the following day (17 hours later).
3075  Economy / Economics / Re: After elections end this year for all countries, we are all screwed on: November 05, 2020, 10:05:00 PM
What you think people were looking to the US for what to do? There is a potential that stocks could go down if they enter a lockdown... But they might just get another stimulus since the value of the dollar against other currencies increased afaik. I think most countries would be looking at China, Germany and france for handling lockdown.
3076  Economy / Speculation / Re: sold mine at 14100 dammitttt on: November 05, 2020, 08:09:46 PM
How would we know where its going? Sure there's a cme gap at $11k (I think) but we could moon before hitting that (or not).

If you think btc is bullish you may as well buy back just in case... If you think we can go higher then why take the risk of selling a large amount of your portfolio. You've also only taken a small hit if we go much higher but you're going to have to expect more bullish than bearish responses now too since we're close to an ath.
3077  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: lose money by swapping a fake coin in uniswap on: November 05, 2020, 06:31:36 PM
I am not clear, had you lost only fees or you lost the fund that you were going to exchange? I had not been using decentralized exchange so I am not fully aware of how fees work. But I know there are many scammers around decentralized exchange those are getting advantage of it. Every time you exchange a token should verify the real contact address from reasonable sources. Otherwise, it's normal that you have to regret eventually. We can't prevent such as scam really unless we become smarter

It's just the gas you lose... Can still be Quitte hefty though.

And yeah ultimately this is a priblem with uniswap's coding for one as it should run some sort of soft test or even a forked version of ethereum to check the transaction has potential to confirm at some point. Stuff could also possibly be done client side too though too.
3078  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: November 05, 2020, 05:54:47 PM
I don't know if someone can confirm this and I ought to try it but I assumed if you have a channel opened with you by someone else, that part of the funds also become inbound capacity.

It'd make sense for a grocery store to do this as it'd also mean you don't need Internet to be able to spend your funds (you still need to sign a transaction but only they need Internet in order to process it)...

At the moment when you open a channel, you're the only one who funds it. There's a chance this'll change but for now that's how it is.
3079  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are we headed to a new all time high now that momentum is very high on: November 05, 2020, 05:16:04 PM
I thinks $16k-$18k was some sort of symmetric difference to the lows of $3k from the $10k level so it was quite likely once we went through there we'd keep going imo (or pull back but we haven't done that).

I'm hoping we can see a stagnation again before we push higher than the 16-18k levels but that might not happen and we could just keep going.

As a bullish sign, any monthly close above the last one is probably a new high close and might be more significant to show there's some good follow through.
3080  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: lose money by swapping a fake coin in uniswap on: November 05, 2020, 05:11:21 PM
Also if you already own the coin can you not check it on etherscan or another block explorer to verify its market cap and legitimacy (you might be able to hunt down some cmc info and stuff from other sites in the process too).

I haven't heard of this being a scam but it must be pretty newish as I've seen they have lists of coins to pick from (Was this one listed on a specific list im not sure of the criteria for getting on the popular ones)...
