3121  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to know a good bounty on: July 16, 2022, 12:40:19 PM
Imho a good bounty has to have at least two things:
* good reputation - either an older bounty, either it's held by a campaign manager with good history and good reputation [beware, some look good only at the surface]
* pay in something valuable - preferably bitcoin, but it also can be an altcoin or token already listed (for some time) at exchanges

Imho in most cases, even if the bounty was fair and successful, the users usually don't get the money they expect for the work, because the payment is held in coin that cannot be exchanged or it has lost a great deal of its value from the moment the bounty has started to the moment of receiving the coins.

However, all this doesn't matter much: bounties keep getting filled by people who don't read much, just hurry to jump in, no matter what, scared to not lose their spot.
3122  Economy / Speculation / Re: If Bitcoin soon returns to $25K - $30K on: July 16, 2022, 12:32:45 PM
So now I'm curious to hear what people think will happen if the majority are wrong  Smiley

Your poll is missing the "I have no clue" option. That's why I expect most of the honest answers be, from people neither too optimistic, not too pessimistic. (Hence I cannot answer!)
Also, I find the questions a bit difficult, so I expect you don't get too many answers either.
3123  Economy / Economics / Re: What are your honest thoughts on Crypto in the future, given what is happening n on: July 16, 2022, 12:27:57 PM
Then what altcoins other than ETH are not scam? What about a FUN token?

I expect that for every 5000-10000 scam coins, 1-2 are legit. But no, I will not enter your game of looking which one is scam and which is not. Actually this term is also somewhat fuzzy: one coin may be just fine now and turn into scam or dead project in 6 months. So no, I will not answer those questions. DYOR.
3124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fork? on: July 16, 2022, 08:13:13 AM
https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2022/07/nist-announces-first-four-quantum-resistant-cryptographic-algorithms

Take back mining for a while until they build new ASICs. Probably do software for CPU/GPU if feasible before ASIC preferably please.

If you would know a bit better the history of bitcoin, you would know that such forks are pretty much impossible to be done because of politics. If this would be done, it would end up in a split, where the actual miners will still remain on one of the chains.

So, as we keep saying to people coming with... ideas... "make your own fork and see how many will use it".
3125  Economy / Reputation / Re: The curious case of user 🏰 TradeFortress 🏰 on: July 16, 2022, 08:01:58 AM
So you are implying that I may be an old scammer of the forum, which was blamed in the past and then, somehow, returned with a new account and spent years for building a good reputation, just to have the chance to meet such a bright mind as you are to expose me?
Of course, you may be, that is totally possible, no need for a bright mind, even you must say it's possible.

While in theory everything is possible, in reality a scammer simply doesn't have the patience to build for so long for a pretty much uncertain result.
Scammers want easy money/easy results. So this behavior would not match with scammer's psychology.
Just my 2 satoshi.
3126  Economy / Economics / Re: What are your honest thoughts on Crypto in the future, given what is happening n on: July 16, 2022, 07:57:05 AM
I'm gradually losing faith in its long-term viability.

What are your thoughts on this?

If by "crypto" you mean the altcoins, there's so many scams there it's safer to not look there unless you really-really know what you're doing. There may be a (very) few good things too, but again, too few and too risky.
If you mean Bitcoin, I will say "nothing new under the sun". We've had bear markets and crypto winters in the past too, so I'm not worried. Until now it's matching pretty well with the previous 4-year cycles.
3127  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the Mt. Gox coins affect Bitcoin’s price in August? on: July 16, 2022, 07:36:53 AM
If the former users of Mt.Gox don't receive compensation in August, then this month there should not be strong fluctuations in bitcoin price. But someday they will still be sent bitcoins and something tells me that most of the Mt.Gox former users will easily sell their BTC.

So all this MtGox coins "drama" is somehow thrown out whenever somebody wants bitcoin traders be uneasy. It has happened before and it may happen in the future too.

The "when" matters a lot. As Franky said here, the chance is very high that it will take quite a long time until all the funds are sent out (from the moment they start sending). If 200k BTC is sold in a month or two that would be only some 3-7k BTC per day, which is not a big deal. Of course, it depends if this happens in a bull market or bear market.

While there's indeed a good chance many of those people will sell their coins (my take is 50% of the people though), I expect many are smart enough to wait for the price to recover and sell for much better price in a year or two. Since they've been waiting for so long, they may know already what patience is.

So I expect the sales will be actually scattered over many months (or years).
3128  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Questions on Arculus on: July 16, 2022, 07:19:35 AM
Seeing there's a nice raffle for an Arculus wallet, I've done a tiny bit of research on what this wallet is.. and I have more questions than answers Smiley
So maybe somebody who has seen this wallet can tell more / enlighten me.

I've seen on youtube that this wallet is basically a plastic card with NFC chip. It works with their proprietary wallet software. You have to have the NFC and the wallet software connected in order to work for the important operation. The wallet software creates the 12 words seed the user has to write down for backup. ... And here my questions come.

Since this is meant to be secure... I'm lost.

Is the Arculus card a hardware wallet and that's the one generating the seed? Or it only provides some sort of 13th word?

Will the 12 word seed work also with Electrum without Arculus card (as it should)? Then I find it incredibly unsafe to show the seed on the smartphone app (am I mistaking?)
Will the 12 word seed work only with Arculus card and their software? Then the user is tied to their proprietary software and hardware and may be a problem if the company disappears.

Thoughts?

3129  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why do we have Nested Segwit and Native Segwit? on: July 16, 2022, 07:04:42 AM
If exchanges are lazy again, will we have Nested Taproot just like why we have Nested Segwit?

While SegWit was a huge leap (completely new address type), taproot is just a baby step forward (let's say SegWit v2). Also iirc Nested SegWit came alive when SegWit did, not later. And Taproot is alive already.

Exchanges' laziness today means they don't support LN yet... but that's another, more complicated story.

3131  Economy / Economics / Re: Your coins on CEX may be at risk this bear season on: July 16, 2022, 06:51:49 AM
Though there are exchange that has a feature of SAFU like Binance which is your fund is safe

Imho the more correct way would be "your funds are claimed to be safe".
With so much SAFU around, this didn't help the Nigerians who got the funds frozen by Binance without prior notice, isn't it?
Again: don't believe everything that those businesses are promising (or claiming). It's just commercial. Think it over very good and never forget: not your keys, not your coins.

3133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why am unable to connect? on: July 15, 2022, 01:56:14 PM
I have had Bitcoin.com Wallet running on Windows 10 for a couple of years now. The version is v5.13-rc4.

Bitcoin.com is a website related to an altcoin called Bitcoin Cash.
Unlike Bitcoin.org, I think that Bitcoin.com actually has a company behind it and it has support. https://support.bitcoin.com/en/

So my advice would be:
1. Ask the support there make your wallet work again.
2. Find out if you have bitcoin in your wallet or bitcoin cash or similar altcoin.
2.1 if you have bitcoin, move your coins to a proper bitcoin wallet, maybe Electrum and make sure you save carefully your seed words, or, if it's a meaningful amount, consider buying a hardware wallet to be safe
2.2 if you have altcoins consider converting into bitcoin and follow step 2.1

I think that people should read the topics made by o_e_l_e_o on this matter, I'll post them here in case you guys (and gals) have missed them.
Recent events should make everyone withdraw all their coins to their own wallets
Recent events should make you withdraw all your coins to your own wallet: Part 2

Shortly, my opinion:
Even though it is being said on a daily basis that "not your keys, not your coins", people keep missing the point and losing more and more money. With bitcoin becoming more and more mainstream, with every minute passing by it's more and more important to keep your funds under your own custody, i.e. be your own bank. And don't give to the others, no matter what they promise. And if you're not knowledgeable enough to keep them safe, buy a hardware wallet.
3136  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the Mt. Gox coins affect Bitcoin’s price in August? on: July 15, 2022, 09:24:11 AM
and now have fun speculating.. because no one knows what all the people will choose.

I'd guess that a "safe bet" would be that about half of the people will sell. The problem is that probably that doesn't mean half of the funds, so still no clue.

On the other hand, is the repayment date set in stone? I mean that news about imminent repayment and/or imminent sell off of MtGox funds keep popping out every few months. I know that it's bound to happen sooner or later, but.. when is that? I think that even those who will handle the repayment know that it looks much better if that average 0.16BTC means $20k than $3k...
3137  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: The google search results for "1XBit Review" are quite shocking... on: July 15, 2022, 08:32:08 AM
And Google should be careful about doing what they're doing not only with 1XBit but with other results as well - this could open the door to the fall of that giant company - you simply don't do such things as this will open the door for many lawsuits against Google for misleading information etc.

I guess that Google knows all this and also knows what holes of legislation to use in their favor. I am almost sure that they have something in their ToS that you have to be careful what you click and what you do with your money.

However, good find. It looks like that unless one ends up here first on bitcointalk, he has very good chance to get scammed.  Angry
3138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would Bitcoin recover even if it fell to one dollar? on: July 15, 2022, 08:24:04 AM
How low would Bitcoin have to fall before it was no longer recoverable?

Price, in my opinion, would not dictate this. It would have to be something that would destroy the foundation and system on which it is built.

what you say?

It's incredibly hard to say with so small amount of data. It depends greatly on what causes the price drop and whether Bitcoin still has a future after that or not. Also it depends if it's caused by some better alternative (although even then the drop should not be that big).

However, we both know that this is pretty much a worthless speculation, so any idea is just as good (or bad) as the next one.
3139  Local / Română (Romanian) / Re: Concursuri/tombole pe bitcointalk (sau pe aprope) on: July 15, 2022, 08:04:07 AM
Doamne-ajuta! Astazi sper ca, in sfarsit, sa dau comanda de mobila. Asteptam sa-mi intre niste bani de saptamana trecuta dar, ce crezi?, au intarziat ("decat" doua saptamani). Astept acum clipa in care chiar vor intra, sa fiu sigur ca-i am in buzunar astazi, iar apoi il voi suna pe cel care-mi va face mobila.

Or trece si astea. Si poate continua Bitcoin sa creasca mai ca Fat Frumos si intr-o zi cu soare sa ajungem sa nu ne mai pese de astea...
3140  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Whitepaper says "We" on: July 15, 2022, 07:35:44 AM
By we, does he mention each and everyone of us or the group he was working on with to make Bitcoin?

Possibly, but not necessarily.
"We" gives more power to a documentation. Sometimes I use it myself, even if maybe I worked all alone on that project.
Plus: it can be related to the fact he did ask around in the community for information and he wanted to give some credit to that.
Again, it doesn't necessarily mean anything. Sorry to disappoint you.
