3121  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: HELP! ELECTRUM crashed & now I've lost my BTC!! on: December 06, 2013, 12:20:32 PM
I tried restoring seeds from a 1.8 wallet to a 1.9 install and it worked fine. Also the reverse also works fine. So it looks like the OP copied the seed wrong.
3122  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: December 06, 2013, 12:04:37 PM
New episodes (any episode after e60) may only be reserved by users who have previously successfully transcribed an episode, with Kluge being happy with the proofreading. Also, reservations for those new episodes will only be possible for one week instead of two.
Reservation for those new episodes will no longer be automatic by posting in this thread, but will have to be confirmed by either me, Kluge or mindtomatter.

I'd like to do episode 61 LTB for new users. Requesting confirmation from qwk or Kluge.

3124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: accidentally entered the address into amount on: December 05, 2013, 03:41:07 PM
It sent 1 btc, so all is good!

Ask support to fix their freaking system. Basic input validation would be nice.
3125  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Feedback wanted re paper wallet tutorial on: December 05, 2013, 02:27:08 PM
Step 9 is impractical.

If your box is owned already, what's to stop malware from stashing the keys somewhere, waiting for you to reconnect?
Step 9 ("Make sure the private keys are not saved anywhere on the computer") means not to purposefully keep such copies. If there's a virus that stores them and reads on reconnecting there's not much to do in this setup. But if the computer is clean and later gets infected, not keeping keys protects you (otherwise it's not a paper wallet).

In practice, "Make sure" becomes "Hope".  Which is why I advocate generating keys while booted from read-only media on a machine with zero storage.

But, like I said before, this is still a vast improvement in security for most users.

And how do you burn said read-only media? Oh yes using your existing online system.
3126  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: HELP! ELECTRUM crashed & now I've lost my BTC!! on: December 05, 2013, 02:21:41 PM
1.  The seed, the only one I have ever gotten.  I used it to restore the wallet I retrieved addresses from in order to do the transaction from localbtc.com to electrum so I know that I am restoring it right.

Try what flatfly've said. Try restoring with that seed in an older version of Electrum.

Your thinking about the change in address generation algos, aren't you?

Zonts when you put the transaction id in blockchain.info's search bar do you see a transaction page with confirmations?
3127  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: change addresses? on: December 05, 2013, 12:24:46 PM
If you are sending the exact amount in an address then there won't be any change and no reason for a change address. Mind posting the transaction ID so we can check?
3128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Late to the party again! on: December 05, 2013, 11:34:03 AM
I would suggest stop mindfucking yourself.

Or, go to vegas. Stand at the roulette wheel. Pretend you put a thousand bucks on the right number twice in a row.

Keep doing it all night until it sets in. You miss opportunities every minute of every day. Just because you were vaguely aware of one of them means absolutely nothing.

Bitcoin was balls out risk. Still is, all these paper millionaires could walk empty handed or damn near. I looked into it, decided I didn't understand it, and that was the end of that because I don't invest in things I don't understand.

I still don't understand much of it. But I understand bull markets. So I'm in.

If you want to learn about it you can, you know. There is a technical support forum where you can ask specific questions and get answers. It can help to understand the basics.
3129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't panic, China is NOT banning bitcoin on: December 05, 2013, 11:25:40 AM
i know, but richard branson also only accepts bitcoins for limited amount of virgin galactic flights. all this news means that bitcoin is going to grow. the only thing that is happening is the standard first week of the month sell off. which has happened every month since april. and may become especially apparent in december as people prepare to buy FIAT paid christmas presents. do not think this is a crash that will cause long term suffering. its just a 'blip' in the grand scheme of things

What?? Did you sell your account to someone else? You've always been the biggest cynic in this forum. I can't believe you are being optimistic.
3130  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Cold Storage solution? on: December 05, 2013, 11:18:03 AM
Hey all, I just recently had 2.4 Bitcoin stolen from my coinlenders account, and I'm curious as to what the best solution is for cold storage?

Coinlenders didn't fold along with inputs.io?
3131  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: 9 word electrum seed creates same wallet as 11 word ?! on: December 05, 2013, 09:05:08 AM
On a related question, will seeds that are more than 12 words (and multiples of 3) always be supported? It came up in this thread where hobbes talks about concatenating 2 wallet seeds to create a 24 word seed:

3132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bloomberg : BREAKING: China bans financial institutions from Bitcoin transaction on: December 05, 2013, 08:54:14 AM
Hahaha this isn't breaking news. This was announced a few days ago. They won't recognize it as a currency but you are allowed to be traded in the grey, which means at your own risk and therefore allowing bitcoin to be implemented the way it's creators intended... For now lol

Where was it published a few days ago? The chinese and western sites being referenced here and on reddit all say 5th December.
3133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Signing transactions off-line with Bitcoin-QT on: December 05, 2013, 08:31:23 AM
It is not simply "signing", it is spending valid payments you have previously received.

To clarify - I would only be redeeming outputs that were previously generated on this off-line Bitcoin-QT instance. I would not be redeeming outputs that other third-parties may have sent me, but rather outputs that I have only signed myself. I gain no further information by downloading the blockchain, other then seeing which block my transactions were accepted in.

I suspect Bitcoin-QT won't let me spend unconfirmed outputs though? I know of at least one web-wallet that allows this. I would simply like to use the core-dev client instead, off-line.

You can create and sign transactions offline. You will need the txids and vouts of the inputs, the script pub keys and the private keys of the input addresses. IF you have all of this you can craft a raw transaction manually. But you can't do it with the GUI.

3134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How bitcoin-qt generate address and how do I know they are really random? on: December 04, 2013, 06:20:56 AM
but computer can not generate reall random numbers.. Is there a way to create a bitcoin address that is connected to something I add .. like a string that I can add..?

Computers generate "better" random numbers than humans so leave it be.
3135  Other / MultiBit / Re: Overview of How to Back up Multibit Wallets on: December 03, 2013, 04:54:06 PM
It says on the multi bit site that the location of the wallet file is mentioned in multibit window title. Can you see it there?
3136  Local / Other languages/locations / Re: Middle East (UAE, Saudi, etc) - بتكوين في الدول العربية on: December 03, 2013, 04:30:38 PM
Wow certainly no shortage of talent in this thread and I wish you guys well. But I have to ask whether there are enough buyers and sellers in the ME to justify the cost of making and maintaining a trading engine for a full fledged exchange? Wouldn't it make more sense to start small and gauge interest with an OTC site?
3137  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to safely split mnemonic seed on: December 03, 2013, 03:36:35 PM
If I wanted to split the seed in two parts would this procedure make sense for split cold storage:

* Generate two normal seeds by starting Electrum without datadir or via -w (part1 and part2)
* concatenate the two parts with a single space in between
* use concatenated parts as input to "restore from seeds"

A seed is supposed to be 12 words so I don't think a 24 word seed is going to work.

edit: Oh wow I just tried it and 24 word seeds work too! Amazing  Tongue
3138  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: December 03, 2013, 03:04:16 PM
This is a pretty epic service.  I wonder, will prices be going down in the very near future?

Yes they will. qwk did say that the reward would go down in the future. More importantly there are no more eps available and I am not sure the bounty will continue for much longer. Let's see what happens Smiley

Note I've tried to eliminate sentences starting with conjunctions by either rolling them into previous sentences or omitting the conjunction entirely. Also omitted filler words like essentially, basically, kind of/kinda and I mean.
3140  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: My buddy is getting a divorce. Can the court seize half of his bitcoins? on: December 03, 2013, 09:03:10 AM
First I think it is crazy that a court can make you share your assets with your ex-wife. You guys have some crazy laws in your part of the planet. I hear Berlusconni has to pay millions of Euros every month to his ex-wife as "alimony". I just don't see what the justification is for something like that.

But yeah your courts are strong and they will make your friend pay up. Bitcoins are considered money now and hiding assets there is no excuse. We learned that when the SEC charged pirate.
