3141  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [Hands On] Ledger Nano Hardware Wallet - Notlist3d on: December 28, 2015, 08:40:46 PM
Thanks for a good review. Cheesy

Design Ledger nano looks like a regular usb not so interesting and easily lost.

But for price it cheap than other hardware wallet.

They did a good job of making it work with regular USB drives.  I think it is a little better built as far as most USB drives, they estimate around 30 year's which mean's it has a lot of writes till device start's to fail.

It is a small form factor I need to take a few more pictures to show lanyard on it.  It is much harder to lose with included lanyard or key chain which both are included.
3142  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [Hands On] Ledger Nano Hardware Wallet - Notlist3d on: December 28, 2015, 08:36:03 PM
does this offer the same protection as the trezor, when you plug-in in a infected pc for example?

It uses a different way  to offer protection.  If computer is infected it's possible that it might get the PIN.  With this you could view inside if Ledger Nano was in computer, it would need it to be connected to infected computer.  This is why I mention I would use a different PIN then wallet's with LCD where it randomizes numbers where when you click on screen a infected computer has no idea what is being clicked.

But it still could not send even if PC was infected and had the PIN.  When sending you need to have the security card.  It will ask challenge question that if you don't have the card you would not be able to send. Part 4 if you click on that image it show's this being used.

Also with Ledger Nano if you enter PIN 3 times wrong, it erases wallet.  So if stolen or lost it cannot be brute forced on the PIN.  You can recover it with seed words if you accidentally did it yourself.
3143  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [Hands On] Ledger Nano Hardware Wallet - Notlist3d on: December 28, 2015, 08:26:14 PM
Thanks for the detailed review Cheesy. What happens if the USB breaks down or gets stolen? which will be the procedure to recover the wallet?

As far as recovery same as any other ones.  You can get a new one and recover it from the 24 seed word's you get during the Ledger start creating a wallet.  As mentioned above you write down in Recovery Sheet.  You MUST do that step as it allows you to recover it.

This is why Recovery Sheet should be stored safely it is the same as other hardware wallets in this aspect.

hey Nolist this is an other good review, are you planning to review all the hardware wallet? there was those two usb HW wallet(i forgot the name) that interested me, they cost a very low amount of money

My plan it to do more, but I currently don't have any others on order.  I still have a few features I would like to cover in ones I already have.  If you or anyone has a suggestion for one feel free to let me know I can't promise I can do them all but I don't mind requests.
3145  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [Hands On] Ledger Nano Hardware Wallet - Notlist3d on: December 28, 2015, 06:04:29 PM
Can I send and receive a Bitcoin with the Ledger Starter OS, or it just work with the Chrome extension?

The Ledger Starter is a offline OS so you won't be able to send from it.  You can create a new wallet, recover a wallet, or delete a wallet.

It does work with the Chrome extension.  You need it to do an update when you get it.  But after you do have a choice of many different wallets that can use Ledger Nano.
3146  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: About the BlackArrow Compensation for X1/X3 customers : Prospero X36 on: December 28, 2015, 04:10:18 AM
So how exactly is sending more money to proven liars and thieves with no guarantee of receiving anything in return compensation for being lied to and stolen from?

There is none that is why this thread is half a joke.  Who want's to buy old gen chip miners and pay BA for hosting?  No one want's this.

I would be very surprised if people jump on this, I think it screams avoid me.
3147  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [Hands On] Ledger Nano Hardware Wallet - Notlist3d on: December 28, 2015, 12:33:35 AM
You've been doing some quite nice reviews/write ups Smiley Any plans on doing one on Ledger HW.1?

Thank you! Possibly in the future.  I still have a few features I feel I have not touched on with current one's.  I really do plan on using that expansion space.
3148  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining at VPS on: December 28, 2015, 12:31:39 AM
It is completely a waste of money to mine on vps.
Even if you used minergate you will get around 0.5 $ only every month.
Also some vps providers does not allow mining and they may pan your account

VPS mining really was short lived.  You have to remember how fast this industry moves.... people see a way to mine on VPS and you can go so easy it is a mixture that explodes on coins.   Only a free trial will you make anything now, and it will be small earnings most likely.

Old day's you could go to to multiple sites and set up one and make money... but did not last long.  Most of the "bargin" VPS hosts do NOT want miners they use up much more resources then normal client.  So some even lock account's that mine these day's.  But that is the "bargin" ones so you get what you pay for.

But again unless free trial you will make nothing.  And free trial chances are very little you make.  I have not CPU mined in a long time as money is just not there anymore.
3149  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: So, now I've got a blockchain on: December 28, 2015, 12:27:06 AM
I've downloaded the blockchain, and it looks as if I've got a couple of addresses. Now how do I test things? Do I join a faucet, and see if I get a transfer?
Best sign up to some exchange and buy bitcoins for 1$. Then try to send it anywhere to see how it works. Easiest learning in the world Smiley

I would go with exchange as well.  It will be more work the first time you use it.  But it's nice later on that you have it all set up and is easy to use.

Faucet time is just to slow.  You will waste a lot of time if you go this route.   But some do it.
3150  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thinking of buying an ant miner. I have some questions. on: December 28, 2015, 12:23:49 AM
your only concern should be your electricity and initial investment, then everythign will be settled for that, there ar eno scam pool, they are all well big known pool

go with s7 if your electricity is not very cheap like 0.05 or below, otherwise you cna try s5

Yeah I was going to get an s7. Electricity costs are .11

then you have your profit, because at present 1 s7 generate around $300 a month, and with 0.1 your consumption will be around $90, plenty of room for profit

also 1 s7 cost only $1k on bitman website, so you see 5 months roi

That calculation is based on no difficulty rise. If the difficulty rises 5% every 13 days, he will not ROI.

because of this he need to sell his miners at the correct time, usually after 3 months

It would require the correct sell I don't think any other way he will ROI.  But that is becoming more and more popular.

He mentioned AC cooling.  This is going to kill profit even more depending on how many but cooling with AC is the most expensive way to do it, and is not recommended.
3151  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: beginners be very carefull on: December 28, 2015, 12:21:45 AM
The cloud mining sites nowadays are just scammers and Ponzi schemes, so just be aware from this schemes and sites, and be careful before investing any amount there. That's just another warning and scam alert.

You can't fit 100 percent of them into that catagory. Sadly yes a lot are scams... it's sad but true.

But what about hashnest?  I think they are ok personally, I could be wrong but I think most would agree with me on that.  So just make sure you know where your investing before you do it.
3152  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: About the BlackArrow Compensation for X1/X3 customers : Prospero X36 on: December 28, 2015, 12:16:03 AM
Look at specs: "30-40% less power (around 0.6-0.7W/Ghash at the wall)" that is pretty crappy now day's.  So they have at least a gen old chips running these "new" machines.

Also "We will not be shipping this miner out of China. For foreign customers, in order to use this miner we will be hosting it in our data centre".... so for everyone out of china you will be paying to host in their data center and they make money on data center.... so quite horrible on that.

I would be surprised if anyone want's this gear even considering who it's from.
3153  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining hardware in a car ? on: December 28, 2015, 12:11:44 AM
The Volvo is ready, lets go!

removed pic for space

Very intersting don't think I've seen a trunk quite so full of miners.  Is there a story behind? Big buy?

Anyways thanks for sharing pic!
3154  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mining in my Dorm on: December 28, 2015, 12:08:59 AM
I have had really good luck quieting miners down using cooler master jetflo 120's.  I usually just use electrical tape to fill the gaps.  They however will not work on s5's.  Just not enough CFM.

S5's run hot and loud they are really not for quiet places unless a cold ambiant.  His S3 he mentioned he will be able to get pretty quiet.  It is a little dated but I guess if 0 electricity cost that does not matter as much.

But I still would think twice before I mined in dorm's.  I just don't think it's worth it for limited power and space.
3155  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Bitmaintech firmware upgrades did they work for you., on: December 28, 2015, 12:05:40 AM
I killed one S3 long ago.  Ever since I have not updated unless big feature or security flaw.

It just is not worth the risk in most cases.   So I cant really say they didn't or did work for me... as I am just not using them in most cases.
3156  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: December 28, 2015, 12:01:59 AM
My Avalon 6's are running in the cold today.  It was low to mid 30's F so pretty cold.  It did not seem to effect my mining.  I think biggest effect is voltages as far as speed.  I know the rumor about hotter running faster... with this cold and I'm getting my normal I'm not totally sold on that one anymore.

3157  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain shipping policy on: December 27, 2015, 11:29:12 PM

I'm thinking of waiting and just pick off some S7's for 600-800$ in a month or two. The difficulty is still climbing and the latest S7 batches are inferior in efficiency to the latest, so i don't really see the S7's being worth all that much before long. I hope those who bought at 2k+ got their 1k+ return already.

I do not remember so expensive S7   at 2k+

BTC value has went up aswell.  Some bought when it had a lower value.  So if they waited it would have been better there aswell.   But we had no way of knowing going from like 230 to 400 or so would happen that soon.  Best bargin was when it hit around 500 that one day as price was still varible I think they got best price (could have changed after drop).

Now it seems they do a fixed price in BTC so value of BTC is not near as much of a factor.
3158  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: December 27, 2015, 11:23:51 PM

exactly...I am trying to gear up for using Y cables on a Superbpag hub, which by itself is already 2A/slot, so i got some 3A Y's (with a very thick cord)...holding one stick back until i finally setup Debian on a PC in a double boot mode, then it is a go time, hopefully tomorrow.
This stick would be "experimental". Other eight chug along at default (~11GH).
Question to stick gurus: would it be theoretically possible to combine two Y's into a super Y? Essentially combining four slots to power one stick?

Could you link the Y-cables? The ones I have all lower my voltage and amperage so it would be great to get something beefier. Thanks!

cables:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/351486414615
but you also have to get couplers for those, otherwise they won't fit (maybe there are male to female Ys, but I did not find them initially):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321726944146

Thanks! I have been looking at these as well: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/USB-3-0-Super-Speed-Male-A-USB-2-0-Plug-to-Female-A-Extension-Y/32428283920.html?spm=2114.01020208.3.209.wMikPP&ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_4,searchweb201644_3_79_78_77_82_80_62_81,searchweb201560_3 and they seem to be the same (except for the need for the coupler). I guess testing is the only way to really tell which are going to be the best. Thanks again.

yeah, those should work, but it is up to 39 days shipping to US
here is similar from ebay (unless you are closer to China), although it is usb 2.0:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Y-Cable-Splitter-YC150B-Extension-Cord-1-Female-2-Male-More-Power-Supply/400507442266

You can go even cheaper.  I can't find exact one I bought quickly but was like - http://www.ebay.com/itm/39cm-USB-2-0-A-Female-to-2-Dual-USB-male-Hub-Power-Adapter-Y-Splitter-cable-Cord-/141745213314 .   For less then 2 bucks you can get one that works, only thing is shipping is slow so takes advance planning.

But you can go pretty cheap and it works just fine.
3159  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [Hands On] Ledger Nano Hardware Wallet - Notlist3d on: December 27, 2015, 11:18:51 PM
As I was saying, great write up as usual and I enjoy reading your 'hands on'  threads!  Grin

Thank you for posting Smiley.   I enjoy doing these.  I do plan on expanding a few of them a little more.    I'm glad that people enjoy reading them.

This latest set of hardware wallets has been fun to try and compare them.
3160  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is mining still a good idea? on: December 27, 2015, 10:48:36 PM
It should be a hobby and stay a hobby. There is no way you will get your money out of it.
The miners market is run by big time bitcoin farms now.
There are plenty of home miners mining now. Sure larger farms are slowly taking control with a diversity of proucts.
But since mining (when you have a low electricty fee) is still profitable, there is enough incentive for miners to keep on mining.

Hobby miners do have the advantage though over home.  Able to do larger amount of watts, and also most hobby use 220/240 so that is a decent advantage when getting new gear and PSU's.   A good server PSU is less then a nice ATX almost always.

Home miners do have the advantage during winter of using them to heat a house, but some miners are loud so just varies.  I think we will see more go to hobby size or very little at home.  Not sure 100 percent which way the market will go.
