And I'll follow up with that just using a USB-C connector won't do anything without USB-PD logic and additional DC-DC hardware; "using the standards" is much easier said than done.

There are some chipsets that might make this a bit easier.

For example from Texas Instrument: https://www.ti.com/interface/usb/type-c-and-power-delivery/overview.html

You could get 3A@5V (15W) without dealing with power delivery.
3142  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UEFA Nations League 2020/2021 Discussion Thread on: June 29, 2022, 12:50:30 AM
Matches in this league mean absolutely nothing. Recently, for example, the Netherlands won 4-1 against Belgium. Do you really think it will be the same at the World Cup? That game could also have ended in 1-8. At the World Cup you see a completely different team. As mentioned before, many players but also coaches consider these matches as practice matches. The only thing is that it counts for the FIFA ranking, in which points can be earned. Those matches are played when the competition is already over, nobody wants that of course. And the risk of injury is also quite high because of that.

They don't mean absolutely nothing, it's still a humiliating defeat though. It just doesn't mean the same as if it was in the World Cup.

I would say a Nations League match is worth about 5% of a World Cup match in terms of what it means in the minds of the players and the public in general.

But the fact that they are on the opposite side of the groups, they can face each other in the semi finals. And there are two possibilities for this to happen:

- Argentina pass in first place of the group, and Portugal pass in second place.
- Argentina pass in second place in the group, and Portugal pass in first place.

Note the strings:
~snip~

You're absolutely right.

It was a bit more mixed than what I thought originally.

Yes, they can meet in the semi final as well as in the final.

Either way, it would be an interesting match, as I don't remember seeing them play against each other in a World Cup.

Usually games that feature an Europen vs a South American country in the World Cup are really good.
3144  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Open Source Bitcoin ASIC miner project that uses 2x BM1387 (Antminer S9) on: June 28, 2022, 05:07:35 PM
I think a double, or even a triple BM1397 miner would be sweet! I’ll give it a try once I verify that the single works.
If you still are only using the USB connection for supplying power yer gonna have problems as the connectors simply cannot handle enough current to power the chips. The absolute max current rating for USB-A connectors is 3.1A and even that is intended to only be for a short time - not 24x7.

I've mentioned this in another thread here some time ago, but given this is a new hardware project from scratch it might be worthwhile repeating it here.

It would be interesting to use a USB-C connector for the miner. This would allow a lot more power to be delivered, using the standards, and not relying on non-standard power delivery like the current generation of USB miners.

Without a doubt it would be a historic game, as they never faced each other for the national teams. And it would certainly be the main game at the World Cup. But they can even meet in semi-finals, so if both teams are doing well, the probability of playing against each other is great. We'll see how things go in December, as the club season is halfway through.

They're on opposite sides of the tournament, so they either never face each other, or they face each other in the final.

There's not a chance to see a semi-final with Argentina vs Portugal.

Either the final or nothing.

Here's the diagram, top row on one side and bottom row on another side of the second stage:

3146  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Most of us have lived a world of USD dominance, but history changes on: June 28, 2022, 05:26:07 AM
It would be nice if you’d have laid out some of your reasons for having such a high belief in this. I’m not so sure it’ll ever happen. My personal beliefs are that it’ll always be a sidekick in some sort of way to fiat currency for some time until it takes a turn and gets over some major flaws/issues like expense , transaction totals and speed, which are taking time to build.

In the same way that every country currently uses their own currency locally, and trade internationally with USD, countries will continue to use their own currencies, but slowly over time more and more countries, specially poor ones, will start to realize that they don't have to use USD to send money internationally(Remittances) paying huge fees through companies like Western Union.

Instead, those countries will start using Bitcoin, with almost no fees, and no need to go to any third party and ask permission. With the popularity of working from home increasing, globalization continuing to expand, and technology becoming pervasive, it is just a matter of time until these countries realize how much money they can save if they use Bitcoin instead of USD.

Those countries will probably be the first layer upon which Bitcoin will establish itself as the new global currency.

At the same time, new applications like Strike for example, will start allowing richer countries to send money overseas with minimum fees by converting local currency to Bitcoin, making a Bitcoin transaction (instantaneous and almost free), and then converting it back to the other country local currency. This is already starting to happen. In the future there will be more countries adopting this, and more companies doing similar things.

This all leads to an ever increasing usage of Bitcoin for international trade. It's just better in every way compared to the legacy financial system. Faster, freer, cheaper, and accessible to anyone.

In a couple of decades it will be so pervasive that people will wonder how we even send money overseas back then.

I was watching a piece of news, but I don't know if it's real or maybe not, but it announced that perhaps for the next World Cup qualifiers, South America would expand the World Cup quotas to 6 places, if this is the case it will be very interesting , the curious thing is that it only said South America, for Europe it would also apply.

The next world cup, 2026, will be hosted in Canada, USA, and Mexico. All those 3 will be qualified because they're hosts. Also, there will be extra slots for all the confederations.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 qualified teams instead of the 32 teams of 2022. So that's going to be an extra 16 teams for the next world cup, selected from all the confederations.

It will be the first time that some confederations will be able to qualify directly instead of having to go to play-offs.

Here's the detailed table with the new spots:

Budweiser is a beer brand that is produced by Anheuser-Busch. I don't think that they are very concerned about the sales inside the stadiums. They spent a huge amount to become one of the official sponsors, and in return they want their brand name to be flashed everywhere in the media and the venues. Now this is a concern. I don't know whether the Qatari authorities would allow alcohol brands to be advertised inside the stadiums. If that is not allowed, then Anheuser-Busch should pull out of the sponsorship and sue FIFA for the damages.

They definitely want to be able to sell beer inside the stadiums... that's a huge amount of money.

Discussions already started:

Qatari officials are weighing whether to relax the country’s ban on alcohol at sporting events ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, sources say

It will be a matter of time I think, eventually they will allow it. The same happens everywhere that has some kind of ban for alcohol. FIFA ends up talking with the local politicians and the rules and laws get changed to allow it.
3149  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Tips on How to Manage Gambling Addiction an Open Discussion. on: June 28, 2022, 03:01:09 AM
Simplest answer will to allot a regular budget and dont exceed your allocated money.    A bad gambling habit is when every bit of capital available goes into the next bet then regardless of whether you win or lose, its already the case that the player broke the rules of risk.     Also it follows that keeping a regular time schedule would be best for some also, presuming time is money.
In short have a plan, dont let the game play you.

Yeah, that's probably a good way of doing it.

But I would say that, similar to other addictions, some people simply cannot gamble responsibly. The moment they start gambling they never stop until they spend everything they have.

This is similar to for example an alcoholic that can't just drink one or two beers, they have to drink the entire bar. Or a chocolate addict, that cannot stop eating chocolate until there's nothing left.

It's all based on similar principles, the dopamine people receive by doing an activity. That's why it's addictive.

For some people, the only way to live a normal life is to simply never gamble ever again. Not even once.
3150  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Can you trust a gambler with your money/savings? on: June 28, 2022, 02:37:05 AM
I had a bad experience almost similar to this thread though it is about Investment and Loan, A friend of mine (in which close to me since Secondary grade) that approach me if I wanted to invest in a Small business Him and His Wife conducting that i come to agree(not asking His wife if this is true and legit because I trust the man) but after giving the funds and checking the business i totally believe about the project but it ended up that He is only using his friend business to make as front for me to invest but the truth is? they are both addicted to gambling and that business is losing its capital.
so it end up My friend has a  loan from me that until now? never come back.

It's better to give away the money to a friend instead of loaning it. That way, at least you only lose your money, and maybe keep the friend.

Money has some sort of power over people. It's a powerful incentive. People literally do anything for money.

It's usually a good strategy to keep your own money separate from friends and family businesses.

I found the S17 repair guide that sidehack mentioned. I've put together a BM1397 version of the bitaxe -- the bitaxeMAX?? naming things is hard. Check it out and let me know what you think; https://github.com/skot/bitaxe/tree/pro

I haven't gotten PCBs back to test yet, so be careful!

That looks very interesting, thanks for updating!

Why are you using a single BM1397 instead of two like the previous BM1387?

It would be great to have a dual BM1397 miner.

Did you manage to make it work?

I added a NCT218 so that the BM1397 core temperature can be read out over I2C

Having temperature readings is a game changer with these little miners. Great job!
3153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Most of us have lived a world of USD dominance, but history changes on: June 28, 2022, 01:14:13 AM
No matter how many centuries pass, there is no way countries like the USA and Africans, and Russia and China and so many others stop using their local currencies to use bitcoin, but what can and will happen is that all countries in the world will be using their local currencies + bitoin, this can and will happen, but saying that countries will stop using their currencies to use bitcoin will not happen. bitcoin is something very new and all countries in the world already know bitcoin and I think that even in the country that is far away there is someone from that country who has bitcoin so it is already a victory, what else do people want?

There's no need for a country to stop using their own currency to adopt a global currency.

Back in the day many countries had their own currencies but used the Spanish real for international trade.

Same with the British Pound, and today with the USD.

Over time we will see a continuous shift towards more and more digital economies, and the obvious choice to make transactions in a digital world is to use Bitcoin.

Every country will continue to have their own currency, but global trade will be done mostly with Bitcoin.
3154  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: June 28, 2022, 01:02:20 AM
Here are the groups for the World Cup:

The Final will have one team from the top row and one from the bottom row.

This means that the final for the World Cup 2022 can actually be Brazil vs Argentina, both teams have been defeated zero times so far.

That would be an incredible final.

They won't enforce it too much for sure but that doesn't mean that there will not be fines or jail at all. There is safe zones to drink if we could call them that way. For those who have money, they will stay on a cruise ships to avoid the control and live as they used to be. I assume people there will find alternatives to do whatever they want without exposing themselves to the authorities.

One of the sponsors of the World Cup is Budweiser. They make an enormous amount of money by selling low cost yet high priced beer at the stadiums in every single World Cup.

I think they will somehow get to an agreement where they will sell beer at the stadiums. When the World Cup was in Brazil, FIFA literally had to talk to the politicians so that they change a law that banned the sale of alcohol in stadiums. My guess is that the same will happen here. They probably don't want to make this too public, but it will happen. There's just too much money involved.

First of June is already gone, I wonder how the first edition of the Bitcoin Book Club went.

And if this is going to be a monthly event, then the second one is around the corner.

It would be great if OP could give us an update to see how it's going.

This competition was created with the aim of ending friendly games. Therefore, it is normal for many players to take these games less seriously. As the competition is still very recent, it still doesn't generate much motivation. But with three or four more years of competition, I believe that mentality will change a bit.

I don't think the whole purpose is to completely eliminate friendly games, but to instead provide a more organized structure to all the friendlies that can happen in Europe, where there are many, many great teams.

Friendly matches on top of the Nations League will continue to happen, just not as frequently as before. In a way, this makes friendly matches a bit more interesting, because there are less of them. The Nations League is basically a lower tier tournament compared to the World Cup for example, but it's nice to have so many different teams playing with each other all the time.
3158  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why is it so hard to win at gambling? on: June 28, 2022, 12:33:59 AM
~snip~
Honestly, I haven't seen a banker or a casino close; the bettor always loses; why is that?
And when we win, how do we feel like that? Isn't it the joy we feel, and we still want to win more and more? And when we feel like this, it is called Greed. So, in other words, the real winner is the Banker and not the gambler, so even if you win 30 times and on the 31st you bet on all the results, you lose, which means it doesn't matter what you won 30 times.
~snip~

It's basically math.

The expected value of any bets/games in a casino is calculated/designed so that it's negative for the better, and positive for the casino.

So, if you keep playing in the casino for long enough, it's guaranteed by math that the casino will win and the better will lose.

Some games have slightly better odds than others, but all favour the casino in the end.

Because probability is not intuitive, many people don't realize this and end up losing all their money, thinking they can actually win in the long term.

Casino games can be a form of entertainment though, and people that sporadically play might even win. The key to win money from the casino is to stop playing forever if you managed to win one time.
3159  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA World Cup 2022 Group Stage Highlights on: June 28, 2022, 12:26:13 AM
There is a feeling inside me like that we will see the biggest teams of South America doing something in the World Cup this time. These teams are obviously Argentina and Brazil. One of them can even win the World Cup title also. I see a huge potential in both of these teams and I think Brazil are a little ahead of Argentina now. Their last head-to-head ended up with a 0-0 draw in the World Cup qualifiers but I like Brazil's style more. They had a more successful qualifier stage than Argentina also. I wouldn't say no to seeing Brazil winning the title.

Brazil and Argentina are the big teams from South America this tournament, both qualified without losing any matches. That's a remarkable achievement as the next two qualified teams, Uruguay and Ecuador, lost 6 matches each:

This puts them into a clear different category.

But also we have to remember that Uruguay has won the World Cup the same amount of times as Argentina (and two more times before the world cup tournament officially started with this format, that's why they have 4 stars in their uniform). Uruguay is always a team that can end up winning.
3160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Most of us have lived a world of USD dominance, but history changes on: June 25, 2022, 04:54:01 PM
Before the USD was accepted as the world currency, there used to be the British Pound as the main currency.

And before that, the Spanish Real.

Those are the latest 3 world currencies. We're about to enter the fourth one, Bitcoin.

It will take some time, but it will happen.
