3161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Help, forgotten wallet pass on: January 27, 2016, 06:16:35 PM
It's not gonna be easy..... the question is, is it worth it? Are we talking about a lot of money in your wallet?

About 45K Dogecoins, which are like $10-$20 I think. It's not a lot. But I do want to access them and not just throw away money like that.

This are the tools you need: https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover.

And if you want me to do it for you, just check my signature and send me a PM.

Thanks, I will try it

Let me/us know if you need help.
3162  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: January 27, 2016, 04:41:23 PM
I'd like to see  this done in such a way that one could have their address generated elsewhere, peerhpas even paying for it as a service, without the third party gaining access to the private key. There was some discussion about it, and it's certainly possible, but it seems to require code changes which are beyond my level of C...

Its possible right now. You can provide me a public key. I feed that into vanitygen with the -P flag; send you the partial(!) private key when Im done. You combine both private keys and have a private key that I have no knowledge off.
Shorena just out of curiosity, how many MKeys do you get? Because I know you generate for a lot of people.

30-37Mkey/s. 30M with -S and 37M without.

How much posts or activity is needed to be able to post images ?

You need to be ranked at least Jr. Member (30 + activity)

3167  Other / MultiBit / Re: MULTIBIT HD what the f, way too complicated on: January 27, 2016, 11:51:41 AM
I already have electrum, so thank you again mates. What is the most secure of MULTIBIT C ,MULTIBIT HD, or ELECTRUM ?

Multibit HD is the only one with brute force protection. Not entirely sure what you are asking here though.
3168  Other / Meta / Re: Idea of a new big subsection : the cultural subsection (science, litterature...) on: January 27, 2016, 09:39:58 AM
Anyone can already participate in threads in the Off Topic or Politics section so just create threads in there if you want to talk about literature, history or science but there really isn't any great demand for these sections so I doubt they will ever be added.

That's sad. The Off-topic section has a bad reputation, so if I start to create numerous thread there, people will see in my stats that I'm  active in this section, and I will be qualificated as "a sig spammer" or as "an off-topic spammer" Undecided... This is just a proposition, so if theymos judge that it isn't needed, I'll respect his choice...

There is a "new rule"[1] in off-topic that "low value threads" are no longer allowed. This might be the perfect time to make these thread and change the perception of the section from "meh, only used by spammers" to "wow, there are actually interesting topics and discussions here".

[1] its not actually new, but there is now a sticky to make it clear.
3169  Other / Meta / Re: On Censorship on: January 27, 2016, 09:38:04 AM
Ah, that's fine then. But i already see myself stopping to quote you easily. Cheesy

As long as you get a notice about your post being deleted it's fine. Though you get no notice when a whole thread was killed or the user who started it and you posted in this thread.

You dont get a PM if the entire thread is trashed (or rather moved in the trash section), but this was not the case here. I would think its also pretty rare for an entire thread to get removed unless its new.
3170  Other / Meta / Re: On Censorship on: January 27, 2016, 09:14:31 AM
So let me get this straight, moderation is an abstract thing that only exists in a fantasy and everything that we do is censorship? In no way is this any kind of censorship.

Often posts are deleted when users get nuked (superpermabanned).
Due to other people quoting non existent posts, correct. This was the case in this thread as well.

So quoting the wrong persons post will make your own post vanish too? How is it connected to ones own post? A flag that you clicked on quote there? I would have thought a quote is only a link to a nonexistant post like it can be seen often.

Sounds like nuking is dangerous if it goes that far. Maybe i misunderstood...

No, it has to be done manually. If the post you reply to is removed because its offtopic your answer can hardly be on topic, unless you answer to several replies at once. At least thats my understanding of it.
3171  Other / MultiBit / Re: MULTIBIT HD what the f, way too complicated on: January 27, 2016, 08:49:56 AM
I have reinstall LINUX MINT latest version and then

1 MULTIBITHD
2 MULTIBIT CLASSIC 0.5.19
3 MULTIDOGE

In an attempt to collect coins and from a new start. I can buy coins via Coinmama once a month, and can withdraw 0.0013 BTC or 1300 DOGE (now that the price has skyrocketed ,used to have 3000) from my mining activity.

My question is , I can get around via MULTIBIT CLASSIC very well as I have used it from long time in my other PC. So I can with MULTIDOGE as is basically the same.

I checked last MULTIBIT HD, and its security is absolutely BRILLIANT, but I can't check my fixed receiving address, everytime I got a new one, also I cannot see my sending address?Huh

It shows you a new address every time because it is designed to discourage address reuse. You can still reuse the same address every time if you want. There is no list of addresses though.

There is no such thing as a "sending addresses". Bitcoins come from transactions not from addresses, blockchain explorers show an address for the transaction, but thats only an abstraction. As you cant decide with which TX you have received bitcoin in hindsight you cant change it, so you cant select a "sending address" anyway.

Maybe you are refering to the "coin control" concept that e.g. bitcoin core has. It allows you hand pick the inputs (formerly received transactions) to use when creating a transaction. This would indirectly allow you to manipulate what a blockchain explorer would show as "sending address". AFAIK its not a common feature in wallets though. I dont know any wallet besides core that has it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I read the help section of it (only the part SENDING/RECEIVING) as that is what I am interested, so I need a bit of help, any step by step guide is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind that MBHD was designed with newbies in mind that dont care about the technical details. If you are looking for advanced features you might have to use a different wallet or stay with multibit classic. Classic was aimed at newbies as well, but it is not as restrictive as HD.
3172  Other / Off-topic / Re: How many bits of entropy is your bitcoin wallet password? on: January 27, 2016, 05:43:36 AM
That's really hell of a password entropy you got there (a wild guess, is it's something between 50 to 70 characters and numbers long, right?). I'm at 98.4 at the moment, perhaps I should be changing it to even more complex one but might have difficulty remembering it though so might think twice for now. Mine is within the strong range and yours within very strong range.

It honestly isn't that hard to remember. It's a 60 letter mathematical phrase that's commonly known that I put punctuation in. It's basically 5 words.

Something like:

The Square Root Of A Multiplied By The Square Root Of B Is Equal To The Square Root Of C.

 ^
  |
  |
Obviously not that, though. Smiley

So your entropy value is probably wrong, because there are not that many mathematical phrases to choose from. Its like a poem, you cant apply the full entropy for each word, because you did not randomly select the words. They are not equally likely. If you have a higher likelyhood for a given word to appear its entropy is lower.
3173  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Raspberry Pi 2 Node on: January 27, 2016, 05:19:57 AM
Is there any reason one could not run a full bitcoin node on a Raspberry Pi 2? I see these are very cheap now, just $37. Add a 32GB SD card and you have a fully functioning node right?

32GB is not enough, but yes people run full nodes on a raspi. It takes ages to download and verify, mainly due to the slow CPU. You might want to get the blockchain with a different machine and copy it.
3174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core version 0.11.2 released on: January 27, 2016, 05:14:29 AM
Because it doesn't know where the bad piece of data is. The crash makes it unable to read the database, and since it can't read the database, it has to rebuild the whole thing.
And that's my complaint, it should be able to pin down the error to a specific block or something.  Having 1 small error corrupt 50 gigs of data requiring it to all be downloaded again is terrible design, there should be a better way to code it.

Its not the 50GB that are corrupted and you dont need to redownload anything.
3175  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: January 27, 2016, 05:13:27 AM
i can confirm received payment from Unitaco.com campaign. Payments are made through their website, and withdraw is without problems.
also this campaign now is closed for new participants
They received the payment but it was a bit late and that's why it is the asterisk, also PNYC has more priority rather than CFNP

If they out again today, Im fine with moving them to CFNP.
3176  Other / Off-topic / Re: How many bits of entropy is your bitcoin wallet password? on: January 26, 2016, 09:07:34 PM
Maybe this will be considered as a total newbie question, but I don't care : what is exactly "bits of entropy" ? Is it the numbers of caracters, letters, and numbers, with all unique coefficeient, or something else ?

Entropy is a measurement how "unexpected" a certain information is. E.g. the information "the vulcano did not break out today" has very low entropy, because its a common event. The information "the vulcano did break out today" on the other hand is a rare event and as such has a high entropy. Its measured in bits, see more here[1]

For passwords its simple, you just calculate the number of possible outcomes and take the result log2. E.g. if you have a 16 symbol password made up from 62 different (e.g. [a-zA-Z0-9]) symbols you calculate:

log2((2*26+10)16) = 95 bit

If your caluclator does not support log2 (most dont) you can do log(6216)/log(2) instead to get the same result.

If you use words or other things as symbols you have to replace the 62 by the number of words or other things you selected them from. If you e.g. randomly selected the names of two friends and you have 100 people you would call such the entropy would be log2(1002) = 13 bit

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy_(information_theory)

Thank you for answering my question. However, for a reason that I still ignore, I get a different result depending on where I write the formula Undecided.

-snip-
Just wanted to add: Its not an "assumption" if people clearly state those keys are MSDN based.

Its not, its just that staff wants to stay out this. Its the same when theymos does not restore (possibly) hacked and (possibly) sold accounts to the original owner. Someone from DT might want to issue warnings against those (like Vod did for MS keys), but it will probably not stop them. Neither buyers nor sellers.

btw, as expected my reports ratings dropped a percentage point, so I got the message.

Its still a full node and its still fully operational. Sounds like the port is block by a firewall.
