3181  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mining in my Dorm on: December 26, 2015, 06:56:00 PM
Honestly I have used those fans for a couple of mining projects including a thunder x3, with the tunnel system it should be good, make sure you don't mess up your push and pull system. (One fan pulls air into the tunnel the other pushes it out) I would also make sure you have everything on a high joule surge protector, dorm wiring sucks and caught my laptop on fire a couple years ago.

Not to mention depending on dorm some have horrible walls where you can hear your neighbors.  So if any sound's I could see some being mad during certain times like studying for test or final week.

I honestly would say send it home and mine it and pay your parents for electricity.  The last thing I wanted to do in my dorm's or apartments during college was have the sound around me or heat.   You pay a small fortune to be there... so making a little bit from 1 S3 is not worth it.
3182  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: s7 new farm on: December 26, 2015, 06:50:10 PM
Your S7 may last anywhere from 1 Day to 2 Years. There's no QC, these Chinese manufacturers just make'em and ship'em. With diff rocketing up and the halfing in 7 months, chances are your S7 will become obsolete before they break down.

Whaaa? You mean the QC sticker they put on it means nothing? Wink

I'd think they boot the thing to see if it runs, but i have to agree i not thinking so very strongly.

They do start them up on all I think.  Some get a "burn-in" where they truly run them but I don't think all miners get this.  Some get quick test and shipped.    Others could be in data center for a while if batch does not sell quick.

It's kinda funny now talking about no QC running them not long enough, as a year ago most would be talking about miners being used to long on "burn-in's".
3183  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Want to start mining on: December 26, 2015, 06:45:38 PM
I am gonna follow your advice and buy 1 to see how it works. I can buy 1 s7 and wait till i get or buy today an s4 2th/s for approx 600 usd. What do u recommend?

Definitely S7, in my opinion. If you want a small one first just to try, get S3 here in the marketplace or even ebay.
Essentially the same gui (almost), same type of connections, much less noise and cost around $100 or so.

The S4 will get you around 2T.  So take times to that is 1200 dollars for around 4T.  So for not much money you can get a S7.

I think 1 is a great idea though gives you experience and testing of area, without chance of a ton of them sitting there not mining due to unforeseen problems.
3184  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 18 to Jan 1 diff thread setup picks are now Closed!!! on: December 26, 2015, 06:43:17 PM
Almost looks a little like art or a boarder with so many quotes, think that is the most I have seen like that.  Looks nice I think.

And I am an example of someone who thought they would be smart and wait close to end.... and forgot Smiley.  So I wont be wrong this week... but wont be right.  Price is 416.... with this difficulty ouch is all I have to say.
3185  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S7 Setup [HD] on: December 26, 2015, 06:34:36 PM
Hello help advice  Huh I burned one of three circuit boards with chips ,I can run two boards with chips?

yeah, but will have to take the bad board out and someone suggested to tape the entrance and exit to the empty space, so cooling fan air flow will go only through other two. good luck.

Also if your within 90 day's of purchase make sure to make a ticket for help.   If within warranty chances are send it in and they send one out (assuming warranty is in-tact).

If after 90 day's I would email them and ask for cost.  The S7 is new enough getting another board I would think would make sense as long as it's not high priced.
3186  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntMiner APW3-12-1600 PSU Series on: December 26, 2015, 06:24:03 PM
I can not find a pdu to power 3 X S7 with 3X psu from 1600W bitmain
I have a section of single-core cable 6 mm, with a magneto 32 AMH

I would think a 30 amp pdu could handle the 1400 watt x 3 pretty easy.  I know I had around 4800 watt's I believe on mine and still had amps to go with 30 amp pdu.

But of-course you need a 30 amp 240 breaker in there as-well. (Or that is how I'm setup at least).
3187  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Hands On] Bitmain AntMiner S7 - Batch 8 - Notlist3d on: December 26, 2015, 06:19:13 PM
I had a power outage.  The good new's is the S7 seemed to handle it great.  No issues from turning off in not the greatest way, and it booted up and worked fine after power was on.

So it get's some point's for being reliable which is important.
3188  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 18 to Jan 1 diff thread setup picks are now OPEN!!! on: December 26, 2015, 06:29:21 AM
Yeah the price went down and the difficulty went a little higher today.

Dec 25th ended at +10.6% for the day.

Price is not fun to lose around 15 dollars or so today so far.  Hopefully we see it bounce up a little it seems at 440 it's kinda slowing down on the downswing, but that could be temporary.

I'm just not happy to see a near 20 change again this week. Bitwisdom right now:
Bitcoin Difficulty:    93,448,670,796
Estimated Next Difficulty:    103,833,243,660 (+11.11%)
Adjust time:    After 870 Blocks, About 5.6 days
Hashrate(?):    716,281,040 GH/s
3189  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Want to start mining on: December 26, 2015, 06:26:07 AM
Honestly you might try starting slow if your new to mining.  Get 3-4 and run fewer at first.  It will give you a lot more confidence and also test the area out.   Jumping straight to 10 in a hobby miner setting from none is a decent jump.

Absolutely agree. Get a few, figure out setting them up, your layout details, etc. Then as you grow more comfortable and familiar with the various logistics involved, you can grow your farm.

I think it's the most financially responsible.  Being a new miner it sounds like even 1-2 will be a good test of your location.  You can test sound, you learn about electricity possibly.  A lot have went to 220/240 as it can run server PSU's with the extra power and it can save a lot of money vs ATX psu's.

But jumping to 10 of these...  you are talking multiple 220/240 lines, PDU's, it is winter so it's easier but cooling and in summer it's much harder, there is just a lot of a learning curve.  And if you have miners sitting there not mining when you figure it out will kill your ROI depending how long they sit there.    I had trouble with a PDU recently and locally they cost a ton, so I ordered a extra PDU to have.  So I think you will find parts you want to have around with a operation like that.  So again learning curve.
3190  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are paper wallets really secure? on: December 26, 2015, 04:18:14 AM
I think we can get paper wallet from blockchain and thats the safst one I think Smiley

Do you mean blockchain.info?   If so no that is not the best your making a paper wallet for a hot wallet... so it kinda defeats the paper wallet part on security.  It allows you to import it into another wallet if needed.  But you don't have that cold security.

So I highly suggest not getting a paper wallet there if your wanting a true paper wallet, with cold storage.
3191  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thinking of buying an ant miner. I have some questions. on: December 26, 2015, 04:15:17 AM
First of all, you probably won't be able to make much extra cash from mining. It depends on your electricity cost, and that cost can offset the earnings you make so that you are actually earning at a loss.

There probably are scam pools. You should just stick to one of the big pools like slush, ckpool, f2pool, etc.

In general you should not have a lot of stuff on one outlet because the power draw can be too much. AFAIK you can use the 240 V outlet for more power and it will should work better. However you should check that with someone else about that.

Doesn't the ant miner use about $100/month and make around $300-380?

I've been having a lot of trouble figuring out the power thing in my head. Could you explain it to me?

There is not 1 "ant miner" they have a good amount of different miners.  From old S1 to the newest gen S7.  So you cannot say how much "ant miners" cost without knowing OP's electricity cost and what model.

OP do you have an area sound will not be a issue?  Do you have a situation where you can get/run 220/240?   Or do you need to stick to 110/120?  Also what is your electricity cost?

Those answers will help some.
3192  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners should Start a Union on: December 26, 2015, 04:10:29 AM
Maybe the union can just negotiate with our power companies for us and get far better rates for miners. BTC

I hate this thread keeps coming up.  A bitcoin union will not and can not ever work.

On this we would need a great deal of miners in same area and on same power company.  This is not realistic for all miners to be on same.  The data center's that use ton's of power.... tend to go to places with good deals on electricity.     So the places where lots of usage is happening... they already have good rates.
3193  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: New to Mining - Setting up Mining Rig on: December 26, 2015, 04:05:52 AM
If Texas university pays you projects. I recommend Antminer s7 (5-10 pieces + powers) Then make Antminer rig? Easy to config!

He say's Texas teacher I don't see anywhere pointing to university.  And even if they did I don't think most history departments will be allowed to run miners, let alone 5-10 S7's.

If you do have support be aware S7's are not quiet.  If you go that route you will need a place not in your class room or office.

While I am adjunct for a junior college, I teach AP classes at a High School.  I was thinking of buying two Antminer S3s and running them both from a 1,000 watt power supply.  I could put them on the floor next to my mini-fridge, microwave, and desk.  The noise for the S3, I'm sure, would be negligible in an already loud classroom.  If anyone is willing to sell two S3s, I'm your buyer!  I'll look here on the forums and see if there's a place to buy/sell.

You won't find many in this thread hit up the hardware sales thread.  Also be careful when you list that you will buy 2 there are sadly a decent amount of scammers.  Use escrow if it's needed it can save you from being scammed.

Or ebay has a pretty constant supply of miners on it.  Just tend to be higher on there then forums.
3194  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: December 26, 2015, 03:59:29 AM
SMRACer said he ran these boxes even at 115F on some days and no issues except for the Monarch boxes before.  I have higher confident that the   S7 can handle the heat better than the Avalon as it have dual fans and at higher RPM.  It's shell is not even hot.  I will drop to 80% and see but the fact that the fan reporting issue and the auto shutdown have me a bit concern so I will be monitoring the Avalon 6 more closely with heat.  Right now it's very stable with 100% FAN speed but yeah that will wear out the fan faster.

The antminer s-7 can run in a 100F plus room

No sure what the avalon six can do.

but the psu's become less efficient at the 45c mark.  So if the room is 100f or 38c   it will act to get the psu's warmer.  you lose efficiency and the higher hash just costs more then the power used.

as for the fans on the s-7    60% setting gives  3800rpm  100% setting does 4400rpm  ..

I lost the net for 29 hours while on a trip   my fans were at 60% and 3800 rpm no issues. To make sure the fans are at 3800 rpm  try 60% and 65% it varies from s-7 to s-7.

All this is temporary until your temps drop back to normal in Texas.

Most manufactures are pretty cautious on operation temperature.    A lot can be pushed much harder and some data centers have done it.   I have not heard anyone putting the Avalon 6 in a stress test though.

Experienced my first problem so pretty good considering a month and like 4 day's of running.  I had a power outage and it seems the RPI picked up both but did not mine on both.   So I can't really blame the miner as it was a power outage.  So for that to be only problem I've had in this amount of time I still consider it to truly be a solid miner.
3195  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 26, 2015, 03:55:34 AM
I contacted Yoshi yesterday in Denver via email posted from this thread.  Response was surprisingly fast especially since it was Xmas Eve.  Paypal adds 6% fee on top of the Bitmain price which I think is reasonable especially since I would get my AMEX purchase protection.  Just waiting to find out if the price includes shipping or not.  I'm thinking of ordering the next batch 9 via this Denver location to avoid any snafu with Custom.

So he offered to sell it via the US office?  What was price they gave?

I'm surprised but that could be a good surprise if some are able to truly order from them. Them taking paypal is kinda a shocker if true.   That is pretty reversible, which BTC and Wire Transfer (after being processed) should not be.
3196  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: December 26, 2015, 03:50:11 AM
interesting going to have to test this out very soon first i need to figure out why my pi is shutting down it will run for a bit then shut off... then i have to power cycle it

i think its cause of how cold it is oustide lately but i dont know if its the pi or if its the sd card having issues

I don't know about that.  I have a 2 RPI's in my mining area with pretty cold winter air and they are not effected on my Avalon's I run off of them.   I would look and see if there is another possible cause.

I could just be lucky but cold does not seem to effect my RPI's.  (Granted high 30-40's F is coldest it's gotten so nothing to crazy yet on winter).
3197  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: a single SP20 power cost .05 /kw -profitable? on: December 26, 2015, 03:44:14 AM
The batch 8 ant miner s-7

Is okay and may do well.

Those 4 hour's kinda kinda kill most miners as far as running during them.  A quick ROI on S7 B8 I think you could leave running and it will just make very very little but a few difficulty changes might change that.

Your best bet would be scheduling the miner to shut down during that 4 hour period.  I would suggest making sure off hours are right (include taxes and fees), as that to peak is just such a big jump.   I'm surprised at pretty good price going to insane high.
3198  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Want to start mining on: December 26, 2015, 03:14:25 AM
The noise should not be a problem. I am thinking of buying 10 s7 and go from there.

But my concern is more the requirements that I must have in the garage to make sure I am efficient, like the electricity requirements & equipment, all i know is that our plugs here are 120v, i am beginner when it comes to that. I know mining is not plug and play so i definitely have to do some home work but some guidance would really help.

Honestly you might try starting slow if your new to mining.  Get 3-4 and run fewer at first.  It will give you a lot more confidence and also test the area out.   Jumping straight to 10 in a hobby miner setting from none is a decent jump.

If any problems I would rather not have 10 miners setting there not mining.  Or even half if for unseen problem.  Starting smaller and growing honestly is more safe route.  When you talk about 120 that worries me as you are looking at like the 400 dollar EVGA instead of a nice server PSU, or Bitmain PSU running on 220/240.
3199  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: s7 new farm on: December 26, 2015, 03:10:46 AM
hi guys ,
we are seting up a small farm with 30 s7s

i just have a question that bother me   and is  [ how long can last s7s  in a nice enviroment[

also i would like to know if some one can let me know if there are some other hardware with more power than s7s

thank you

My Antminer S1 are still working as well. If you have a good unit, i'm guessing it will last longer than you need it to. Or you could have a bad one and it could break at any time.

There are hardware with more Hashrate than the S7 but that does not mean its a better option. Also trying to get something like a SP50 is pointless unless you have a datacenter setup.

Also I don't think SP will be interested in selling one at a time, at least at first on SP50.  I see them going for bulk sales, which your right data centers could be the customers they are looking for.  I also think NDA's will keep info on SP50 slow to come out, but hope I'm wrong on that.

OP what is your electricity price? In many cases the gear will last longer then it makes sense to mine it with.  You might be surprised but you might end up selling them after mining a while.  After that you sell to free/very cheap electricity people.
3200  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Next gen Antminer opinions/guesses on: December 26, 2015, 03:05:37 AM
Bitmaintech has no reason to change to new gear until some one has better gear.

So if some One  really starts to sell .15 watt or .20 watt gear bitmaintech will bust out a .10 watt item

Til then stand in line for the s-7's

I disagree as this is a race in mining.

It'll be too late till someone starts to sell, BMT would wanna sell ahead, there's no reason for them to bust out a newer tech later on. if they do that, it will too late.

If I were BMT, I'd love to sell as much as possible in the shortest amount of time especially before halving.

SP is coming with SP50

LK is coming with B-Eleven

Bitfury is coming soon too

& the lists goes on.

Ever wonder why the S7's price has been dropping last couple of days same goes to the Jan B9 bulk buy.

TBH i foresee a new launch from BMT themselves & competitor which is around mid of 1st quarter of 2016.

16nm race is on.

Only thing is a lot of those coming soon we have seen no working prototype (that I know of).  It seems some companies announced very early, and they are slow to come out with products.

I think Bitmain will keep current as long as possible.  The more chips/miners they pump out and can sell the higher profit (most likely) they are able to reach.   They are good that they seem to always sell to home customers/hobby customers, which some companies have no interest in selling to.  I see a lot of the first miners no matter which one being internal or big bulk customers, then going to smaller customers (and some stop at bulk).

I think it is a race to a point.  But there has to be a company that sells to home/hobby customers that has a new chip to really push them. If a company has a chip that is better, and does not sell to smaller miners it does not really push bitmain smaller sales.
