321  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / to crossfire or not to crossfire on: July 08, 2011, 01:53:30 PM
Is it better to run two 5830's in crossfire mode or individually?
322  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830's, what mh/s are you getting? on: July 08, 2011, 01:52:55 PM
318MH/s OC'd at 1020/355MHz.  Aggression=12 Worksize=256 phatk and some other settings that I can't remember.

I can push it to 1050/355MHz and hit a solid 325-327MH/s but it sometimes locks after a few hours, which to me isn't worth the 7-9 extra MH/s.

How'd you get it that high? At 960mhz mine starts to run into issues. Voltage?

What brand are you using? I use sapphire and have no problems getting it to 1000/300 with no voltage changes. I haven't tried higher because I'm waiting on my 5200 rpm fan XD

I've got XFX. I heard that sapphire was easier to overclock but I just don't understand why.

Question whats the CPU usage with these drivers without the dummy plugs attached?

Also, is there any improvement in CPU usage while mining? with the current version of CCC, my CPU (core2duo) is around 40% at 289mh/s.

... I just ordered some resistors last night to make a dummy plug, lawl.

Hmm, I don't have a radioshack near me (Canada). Maybe I can buy the pack online?

Nothing special about the Radioshack ones. I just posted the part # as it's handy to have if you do have one near you.

If not, any store that sells resistors will do. You just need 68-ohm ones.

Awesome. I just bought 20 for $2.50 shipped:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330562679732&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Thanks SO much for letting me know that was the issue. Come to think of it, I have heard the term 'dummy plug' used before but forgot about it.
326  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830 and 4870 in one machine? on: July 08, 2011, 04:08:34 AM
I don't. I don't even know what a dummy plug is.

I'm going to guess that it'd trick the computer into thinking it was hooked up to a monitor.

Where could I get one? Would a DVI>VGA converter work?

Yes, a dummy plug tricks the card into thinking a monitor is attached, and in turn tells windows to load the drivers. Without a monitor attached Windows just ignores the card.

They are easy to make. If you don't have a VGA output on your cards, you will need a DVI->VGA adapter, but that alone will not do it. You also need some resisters.

Run down to Radioshack (or any electronics/radio store) and pick up a pack of 68-ohm resistors. At Radioshack the part number is 271-1106, for a pack of 5. You will need 3 resistors per card.

The instructors I followed are located at: http://www.overclock.net/folding-home-guides-tutorials/384733-30-second-dummy-plug.html

And are pretty simple. Just plug the resistors into certain pins on the VGA port, and you're good.

EDIT: yeah, $20 on ebay for 1 is insane. I'm assuming you have DVI->VGA adapters laying around, I know I did. If thats the case, you can make them for less than $2 total.

I'm running a 5830 and a 5670 on the same machine without any problems.

Are you running Windows by chance? If so, do you have dummy plugs on your cards? If you are on Windows, and don't have dummy plugs, this is high likely your problem.

I don't. I don't even know what a dummy plug is.

Just looked it up. Nope, definitely don't have one. Definitely is my problem. I found one on Ebay for $20 or so. Is there anywhere else I could find one? Make one?
328  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830 and 4870 in one machine? on: July 08, 2011, 03:40:10 AM
CCC shows the 4870 as a 'disabled' card. I'm guessing that's the issue but I'm not sure.
329  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830's, what mh/s are you getting? on: July 08, 2011, 02:23:32 AM
how are you guys getting past 900mhz overclock? My CCC only goes to 900. I heard something about using a tool from MSI to get into the 950 range but also heard that it only helps a tiny bit.

Also, these XFX cards of mine have lifetime warranty. What can I/can I not do to OC to the max but still keep that warranty. I know I can't flash the card BIOS, for example.

How are you a full member and not familiar with MSI Afterburner?

There are plenty of posts, including an official MSI Afterburner guide, in these forums.  Easy to find.

I actually found a way to OC past 900 in AOCLBF. I'm currently getting 296-299MH/S at 965mhz.

edit:down to 950mhz because I'm having some stability issues.
330  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5830 and 4870 in one machine? on: July 08, 2011, 02:21:04 AM
I was pretty sure other miners were able to run different cards in the same machine. For some reason, AOCLBF sees my 4870 but I'm getting 0kh/s. I thought CCC said something about not being able to load drivers or something but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

what's everyone's rejection rate?
333  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830's, what mh/s are you getting? on: July 06, 2011, 01:46:10 PM
I just changed the kernel.cl file that boosts about 3% mh/s. I'm now getting 278-279mh/s. Strange thing is I'm still getting a lot of rejected shares. I have vectors, HD5XXX, fastloop, and phatk checked in AOCLBF. I'm also using 128 worksize, 13 aggression. I'll try dropping aggression for a while.

I was getting 272mh/s with my 5830. After implimenting this change, I'm getting 278 or 279. Not too shabby Smiley
335  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5830's, what mh/s are you getting? on: July 05, 2011, 01:50:16 PM
I just picked up two XFX 5830's. One is dead and has to be RMAed. The other has some issues but is still able to mine. It'll also have to be RMAed but I'm mining it till then.

I'm getting 272mh/s.

I'm running phoenix 1.5 with AOCLBF 1.74. Worksize = 128

Still working on tweeking this. Just got 7.6% rejection with these settings.

What is work size?

edit: -w or --worksize controls the work group size.  it defaults to the maximum value reported by the card and going above that will likely result in the miner crashing.  there's no real hard and set rule for this and it varies from card to card, so find someone with your same card and ask, look at the mining hardware comparison for inspiration, or just poke in various values and look what happens to the hash rate.

337  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Basic mining questions: PCIe x16,x8,x1, extenders, ASIC? on: July 05, 2011, 01:32:26 PM
x1 is fine for mining. PCI-extenders just use a ribbon cable to allow you to raise your card from the board.

Application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICS, would be much more energy efficient for mining. As far as I know no one has done this yet. Field programmable gated arrays, or FPGAs, have been used. These also are highly efficient but can be prohibitively expensive... though cheaper than an ASIC.

Are you sure 1x is OK for mining? No card seems like it'd fit that slot. Do you mean 4x?
338  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: xfx 5830 issues on: July 01, 2011, 09:15:33 PM
Thats what a dead gpu looks like my friend. How hard and hot did you run it?

It was on Agression 12-13, fan 75%, never got above 70C and I had it hooked up for less than a day. I ran bitcoin on it for about 1-2 hours at max. It was OCed to 900mhz GPU Clock and 1000mhz memory clock.

Card 1 won't display an image after 1-2 sec of BIOS.
Card 2 has pixels all over the screen that flicker.

Are both of these cards on their way out?

XFX is going to RMA both of these cards. The one with pixels I'm going to keep because at 900mhz OC I'm getting 249mh/s out of it. Better to have for the coming week than not having it. Already had to wait about 3 weeks to get them. Grr.

I just got my 5830 hooked up (have 2 but need L-shaped SATA cables to get the second in) and I'm having issues:

[ 7/1/2011 4:49:33 PM] I installed my card, installed the drivers and it was working fine. Then it switched to grey vertical lines and I can`t get any video to come up. Not even the BIOS is coming up. Any ideas? I`m going to put in my second 5830 this afternoon to see if that helps.
[ERIK_A 7/1/2011 4:57:55 PM] Hi Matt, If you are not getting any video signal out of the card at all at this point, then its a hardware issue, malfunctioned card, slot, or power supply would be the prime suspects in something like that, but if the system isnt booting at all could also throw motherboard, CPU, and memory in as well. Does the board give any beep codes, that may help point towards where the issue would lie if the other 5830 doesnt work. - Erik
[ 7/1/2011 5:09:40 PM] I switched DVI ports and it posted BIOS but then 2 seconds later it hit with black and white vertical lines. I can`t use PCIE slot 2 right now because I need to get some l-shaped SATA cables. I`m going to try the second card now.
[ 7/1/2011 5:13:21 PM] Second card is in, boots past BIOS and seems to be booting up fine. Same port, same PSU, same everything.
[ 7/1/2011 5:14:40 PM] Booted to Win7 64 bit. There are tons of green pixels flickering through the monitor. I`ll try to restart to see if it helps.
[ 7/1/2011 5:20:30 PM] Very strange. The windows login page is fine, no pixels. I rotated through a few different background images and they have green pixels on them. BIOS is fine too. I just uninstalled the drivers for this second 5830 and it seems fine now. I`m going to reinstall the drivers now to see if it helps.
[ 7/1/2011 5:27:46 PM] Same issue, reinstalled the drivers, restarted, same result. lots of green pixels that flicker and move around. Card 1 - was fine, great picture but after 1 day of using it it won`t display video it seems card 2 - boots fine but has lots of green pixels when booted into windows.

Has anyone experienced these symptoms before?
