321  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-06 BitCoin Ponzi Scheme by Chris Duane (Truthnevertold) on: March 07, 2013, 01:40:58 PM
of course i completely disagree with the video, just stumbled on it on youtube.

even the ECB disagrees in Bitcoin being a Ponzi by its definition.

A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud that involves the payment of purported returns to existing
investors from funds contributed by new investors. Ponzi scheme organizers often solicit new
investors by promising to invest funds in opportunities claimed to generate high returns with little
or no risk.In many Ponzischemes, the fraudstersfocus on attracting new money to make promised
payments to earlier-stage investors and to use for personal expenses, instead of engaging in any
legitimate investment activity.14

On the one hand, the Bitcoin scheme is a decentralised system where – at least in theory – there
is no central organiser that can undermine the system and disappear with its funds. Bitcoin users
buy and sell the currency among themselves without any kind of intermediation and therefore, it
seems that nobody benefits from the system, apart from those who benefit from the exchange rate
evolution (just as in any other currency trade) or those who are hard-working “miners” and are
therefore rewarded for their contribution to the security and confidence in the system as a whole.
Moreover, the scheme does not promise high returns to anybody. Although some Bitcoin users may
try to profit from exchange rate fluctuations, Bitcoins are not intended to be an investment vehicle,
just a medium of exchange. On the contrary, Gavin Andresen, Lead Developer of the Bitcoin
virtual currency project, does not hesitate to say that “Bitcoin is an experiment. Treat it like you
would treat a promising internet start-up company: maybe it will change the world, but realise that
investing your money or time in new ideas is always risky”.15 In addition, Bitcoin supporters claim
that it is an open-source system whose code is available to any interested party
i omitted the bogus counter-aruments Smiley

he cited an interesting quote at the beginning:

"Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value -- zero."

i did not know this insight is that old. I'm adding that to my quotes repository.

324  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-04 Boost VC Welcomes Bitcoin on: March 06, 2013, 07:56:30 PM
the irony i see: IMO most bitcoin startups will manage just fine without any serious funding. at least in the initial phase.

how much seed capital did mtgox need to get the first exchange online? bitstamp? bitpay? satoshidice? silk road? answer: hardly any. please correct me if im wrong.

no, they require some "free" time and lots of dedication, dedication, dedication by skilled people. Of course those VC sort of fear they will be left out and are now actively reaching out to new bitcoin entrepreneurs.
If they are unlucky they will attract "oh free money nice kthxbye" people.

the fed has announced they will be buying 85B worth of bitcoins (2.125 Billion Bitcoins) each month to help the asset values of struggling software engineers, and improve their purchasing power. this will of course all trickle down to the people formerly known as upper and middle class.

I agree. While painful 333 BTC is only symbolic, compareed to the total business of Bitinstant. i wish them best luck in securing their site further and possibly prosecuting the thief.

330  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-03 - Monetary Metals - Is Bitcoin Money? on: March 04, 2013, 05:45:49 PM
all money is not real. it is just a social construct that helps us exchange real goods and real services.
the value of gold is not intrinsic it is just in our heads.

335  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [SUCCESS] Double Spend against a satoshidice loss on: January 30, 2013, 12:14:29 PM
That is a very good point!  Anybody at all can create modified versions of any transaction in that manner and change its txid arbitrarily.
If i understand that correctly, that means SD will be exploited soon by players, well-connected hosts or miners?
336  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Let's Embrace BTC Trusted Timestamping on: January 28, 2013, 08:09:34 AM
we had some very similar ideas and came up with these  prototype implementation for both android  (end-user) and python (server) - they work independently.
we also use sha256(file) as the private key, but for now we don't send the money back.

https://github.com/bitcoinaustria/bitnotar

because of the workings of intents, you can use this tool in basically any Android app that supports sharing of content. (text, pictures, videos) it utilizes a generic bitcoin URI intent to send the funds, so you can use bitcoin wallet for android, bitcoinspinner and possibly others in the future.

i think this would be a great addition to dashcam software, for on-the-fly video notarisation if properly extended.

i think the point jgarzik was making is about block relaying from other nodes who did not find the block.
340  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Satoshi Dice -- Statistical Analysis on: November 27, 2012, 09:33:26 PM
isn't there always a martingale simplification? so instead of betting 50% two times i could bet 75% one time and save on fees. if i know my maximum bet in advance, it should be easy to simplify the betting pattern to something with equal chances but lower transaction fees by betting on higher payout probabilities.
