"Speeding" is an arbitrary and capricious infraction. If someone's going to drive recklessly, they will. If their recklessness causes actual injury, there are immediate and long-term remedies for that.

Ridiculous. Yes, let's provide a remedy after someone is killed. Do you juggle knives in the presence of newborns until something unpleasant happens?

Titanic

What is your favorite long movie? Let's say, any film greater than 160 minutes?

And did you ever see Kurosawa's No Regrets for our Youth? It's one of my favorite Kurosawa films. See the tribute here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUGhS7t903c

Thanks for the guideposts.

I have to admit that I have a copy of "When a Woman Ascends the Stairs", but have not yet watched it. That darn syndrome where, when you have a copy of a movie, you feel no need to watch it immediately? And then you save it for later. And later... I know, I'm sad.

Yeah. I did that with Kurosawa's Red Beard for about eight months. And then I watched it and discovered one of Kurosawa's best works. When a Woman Ascends the Stairs is one of my favorite movies of all time. It stars Hideko Takamine. That is the truth. Watch it.

Setsuko Hara was Ozu's muse, but she also starred in some Naruse titles. Hideko Takamine was Naruse's muse, but she also starred in some Keisuke Kinoshita titles. And Kinuyo Tanaka was Mizoguchi's muse, but she also starred in some Naruse titles, and one Ozu title.

Oh, and Setsuko Hara was in two Kurosawa titles.

Here's a youtube guy who puts together some tributes to Setsuko Hara and Hideko Takamine. I love it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O6tdZucyVc

Thanks for so many things to look for. And that tribute was moving.

Also, have you seen Millennium Actress? While we are on the topic of Setsuko Hara.

I have the DVD. I started it, but it was really late and I had to go to sleep. I need to watch it. Setsuko Hara, of course, walked away from cinema in the early sixties and never gave another interview or public appearance.

See this thread which I started: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=293034.0

I think we need a new thread for asian movies...don't want to constantly post OT  Tongue

Create it, and I'm in! Plenty to discuss. Believe me.

have to go to bed now, but that's on my schedule for tomorrow... Wink

In general, I think 100 minutes is ideal for a film. Longer films can usually be made better if they are more tightly edited.

Incorrect. A longer film made shorter is simply a different film. It might be better than the longer film, but it's a different film.

If one studies film grammar, and the styles of directors, notably those that are considered to be auteurs, you'll find that their style is integral to the films they make. Yang's Yi Yi is nearly three hours long. There are some long shots in that film. But my gosh, I would never want it shorter.
328  Other / Off-topic / Asian films old and new: recommendations, discussion and appreciation on: September 12, 2013, 05:02:10 PM
Hlynur was going to start this thread, but I'll just go ahead and get it going. Off the top of my head, I can think of the following important film movements:

- The Golden Age of Japanese Cinema (the 1950s)
- The Japanese New Wave (the 1960s)
- The Taiwan New Wave (the late 1980s to about 2000)

Also, of course, is the distinction between mainland China films, Hong Kong films, and Taiwan films. Older films and contemporary films from the entire region should be discussed.

And finally, for those who aren't well versed in these films, please view the thread, ask questions, and so on, as some of the most famous films ever made came from Asia. The Asian film canon is rich and diverse.

Busted! The Coke gave it away! Smiley

I just assumed that well, you know, OZU...

Only "Tokyo Twilight", and "Tokyo Story" blows me away every time I see it. That's it so far. I'm looking for the others now. Thanks for the suggestions!

Tokyo Story isn't my favorite. Of course, that's within the canon of Ozu films. It's still way way up there relative to other stuff.

I love Tokyo Twilight. Seriously.

You need to watch the Noriko trilogy for starters. That would be Late Spring, Early Summer, and of course, Tokyo Story. It's called the Noriko trilogy because Setsuko Hara plays a character named Noriko in each - albeit, a different Noriko.

After the Noriko trilogy, you need to start in on Ozu's color work. Oh my gosh, but you have some wonderful films to watch. Equinox Flower, Late Autumn and Floating Weeds are my favorites among his color films.

Separate question: have you watched any films by Mikio Naruse?

Thanks for the guideposts.

Why Asians only? Isn't that racist? You don't see me making a topic for white people only right?

its not racist its just I have first thread here and some friends of community asking we need to talk about asian films and need another thread so I have this its just a fun not racist

This isn't the thread for it. I suppose you meant well, but this just isn't the thread for it. The title is not appropriate for one thing. Furthermore, the subject matter shouldn't be restricted to romance films. Another thread should be coming soon.

Bon appetit Smiley

We're trying to have a serious discussion about Ozu here. You're welcome to join in.

Have you watched the three clips (not including the one without subtitles)?

I have learned about friendship honesty & trust

Well, I suppose. There was a clip I was going to share with you that featured coke. Look here at the this list, voted by directors worldwide every ten years, and see what film is voted the greatest film ever made, out of all films ever made: http://explore.bfi.org.uk/sightandsoundpolls/2012/directors/

Now, you have just seen three clips from three films by that director. There is a reason his films are praised so highly. And I mean highly. His films can be rewatched with undiminished pleasure over and over. And, his themes, despite seeming Japanese, are critically acclaimed as being universal.

You now have ten films to watch, and they will change the way you look at cinema, forever. They are:

Late Spring
Early Summer
Early Spring
Tokyo Twilight
Equinox Flower
Late Autumn
The End of Summer
Good Morning
An Autumn Afternoon
Floating Weeds

Great taste in films! But why is "Tokyo Story" not mentioned? That one is probably in my top 5 list of all time. (Ikiru is #1)

edit: Sorry, I just realized they had "COKE" in them! Carry on...

2nd edit: I just clicked on the link for best film ever. You're way ahead of me! Please start a movie thread, I'll follow it!

How many of those have you seen?

Once upon a time in America

there are several cuts: 229 min | 139 min (re-cut) | 259 min (2012)

Sergio Leone worked more than 20 years on this masterpiece. Ennio Morricone provided the soundtrack before any footage was shot, Leone just wandered to possible locations listening to the soundtrack for more than 10 years, then worked on the movie for another 10 years. The first version was more than 6 hours long but producers forced him to cut it down to 139 min for a cinema release.
Later he made a director's cut, unfortunately he died before he could realize his plan for a version in full-length.
It's hard to keep track of the different versions, I didn't even know the mentioned 259 min on imdb.

A Western. That reminds me of Heaven's Gate. I need to finish that one.

nope, leone did a bunch of good western films ("Once upon a time in the west" being the best known) but this one is a gangster movie about a former prohibition-era jewish gangster who returns to manhattan 30 years later to face the ghosts of his life.
a lot of the usual suspects are acting in it. Robert De Niro, James Woods, Joe Pesci, Burt Young.

You're correct. I saw "Once upon a time..." and Sergio Leone, and my mind filled in "America" with "the West".  And both are long films.

ok I will do and send you link wait some bussy just as I have time I will do this

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=292867.new#new   do post your comments here now

A. I'm not Asian, nor was the list intended to be only for Asians.
B. It wasn't supposed to be confined to romantic films.
C. You don't sound emotionally invested in the thread.
D. I didn't request that you make the thread.

Finally, you've been given gold in this thread by hylhur and me. You have some films to watch.

And saddest of all, you don't even sound emotionally invested in this thread. You haven't discussed films at all here.
337  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Matrix vs Inception on: September 12, 2013, 03:39:16 PM
The Matrix:
The classic "brain in a vat" idea, brought to the masses. It obviously provoked a bit of thought in a lot of people. They even alluded to qualia and their unprovable, subjective nature (how do we know what chicken is supposed to taste like?). In toying with ideas like Solipsism (how do you know if other people are real, conscious beings? They could be soulless Agents projected as images in your mind.) and rebirth, they seem to implicitly reject Christian ideas of god (+1). OTOH they ran with some ROFL Zionist themes instead (Zion, the last human city, located in the centre of the Earth? Pulease.) so I guess you can't win them all.

Inception:
It rang a couple of alarm bells for me. Namely, if you peel away the special effects and dream-within-a-dream crap, you're left with a warmongering propaganda plot. The evil Iran wants to sell oil to the Chinese, so they must be stopped. And by the way, the FBI is all-powerful and are entitled to do whatever the hell they want, so deal with it. Uh, yeah right. And yes, wow, it seems to deep and meaningful that 'Inception' tried to embed things in the public mind, while talking about it. Dislike.

Sorry to be repetitive, but there's better stuff out there. These two films just aren't the milestones in cinema for cerebral thought that people like to think they are. The themes in these films are big cliches. Nothing new was put into my mind upon watching them. I did not go "Whoa! Now I've got to think about that for a week." I made two lists a few posts back. Some of the films on the two lists are a bit mainstream and mundane, but I placed them there to make people think I wasn't into just listing out very obscure films. But the truth of the matter is, all the films on the list that you haven't heard of are critically acclaimed and big amongst cinephiles. And there's several on there that just really tap into your soul and make you think.
338  Other / Off-topic / Re: best romantic movie you watched on: September 12, 2013, 05:44:25 AM
Hate to have to repeat it, but these are the films, listed below. Go watch them, and don't expect a Hollywood like narrative to be handed to you on a platter. They're a little more cerebral than that. Here they are:

From director Wong Kar-Wai:

Days of Being Wild
In the Mood for Love
2046
339  Other / Off-topic / Re: Some films that are bit longer than usual on: September 12, 2013, 05:42:12 AM
Modern Times Forever: 14,400 minutes

Is it any good? How many times have you watched it?
No, it's just time-lapse footage of an ageing building, apparently created for the sole purpose of beating the record for the world's longest movie. I got bored after a few minutes. The Cure for Insomnia is better, though I haven't watched the whole thing, mainly because I don't actually have insomnia.

I wasn't really intending this to be a reference for the longest films ever. More, it was supposed to be a thread of interesting long films. The very well known titles in my original list are there mostly to provide a comparison.

The real purpose is to point out some critically acclaimed long films - films of interest.

Cool! I really want you to start it so you'll be emotionally invested in it. I've started a lot of movie threads around here, but most people here don't discuss movies that much. Believe me, I have a lot to say about Asian cinema.
