Newsflash: Bitfinex Unveils ‘Distributed Banking Solution,’ Resumes Fiat Deposits

Cryptocurrency exchange giant Bitfinex has unveiled a “distributed banking solution” that it says will be a “resilient” solution to its much-chronicled banking woes.

Announced on Tuesday, the new system will allow KYC-verified users to immediately begin initiating fiat deposits across USD, GBP, JPY, and EUR, which had been paused for almost a week.

Under the new system, eligible users must initiate a fiat deposit through their exchange accounts, which involves specifying the exact amount and currency they plan to deposit. Within 48 hours, the cryptocurrency exchange will send the user a deposit notification approving the transfer and providing the bank details specific to that individual transaction.

Alleging that this new system will allow the exchange’s operations to be more “durable,” the company said:

    “We believe this system to be significantly more durable in the face of sustained attacks by our competition and their supporters. Ongoing campaigns against us will only result in our company becoming stronger and better.”

Bitfinex — which reportedly shares a management team with Tether, issuer of the controversial USDT stablecoin — did not reveal the bank(s) with whom it is working, nor did it explain the nature of those banking relationships.

However, screenshots purportedly from Bitfinex accounts show a message that sternly warns traders not to reveal banking information to anyone outside of their financial institutions, as doing so could “damage…the entire digital token ecosystem.”

The message says:

    “This banking information is being provided to you for purposes of contributing good faith funding to your account on Bitfinex….This banking information is commercially sensitive and confidential. You should be very careful with this information. You are asked to keep this information to yourself and to not share it except with your financial institution. Divulging this information could damage not just yourself and Bitfinex, but the entire digital token ecosystem. Accordingly, you are cautioned that there may be serious negative effects associated with this information becoming public.”

Ethereum Testnet Bug Found and Fixed

A bug that chain-split ethereum’s Ropsten testnet has been identified and fixed within hours.

As it was guessed, it had something to do with a new Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) that adds efficiency gains to gas calculations with only Parity seemingly affected.

“The bug has been fixed. It affects parity and aleth, which we had the same bug,” Wei Tang, a Rust developer at Parity told Trustnodes, with aleth being a C++ eth client.

“I fixed the sstore refund saturating_sub bug and confirmed that it indeed computed the same state root as geth.” Tang publicly said around midnight London time before adding:

“I guess when Afri wakes up, we’ll try to get a patch release really soon which should fix the current consensus issue on Ropsten.”

Our out of nowhere guess would be that this probably can still make it for November if no other issues are found. That’s because with this bug so quickly identified and fixed, the delay might be just a few days.

EDIT: OK, I think this was just a whale buying lots of Bitcoin. Of course, if the Bitcoin price goes up by 10%, all USDT pairs pump by 10%, too. So if IOTA is worth 9000 Satoshi, which is $0.5 and Bitcoin goes up by 10%, IOTA is still worth 9000 Satoshi, but then $0.55, so it shows as a 10% pump in the IOTA/USDT pair, while remaining stagnant in its BTC pair. So, this doesn't have to do anything with Tether, just a whale buying lots of BTC. When that happens, USDT pairs always pump, because of math, right?

CYBERSPACE — SpankChain, the blockchain-based payment ecosystem for the adult industry, confirmed that it has recovered all of the funds hacked during a security breach last weekend.

SpankChain, in a series of tweets, said that after CEO Ameen Soleimani spoke by telephone with an individual who stole $38,000 in ethereum (ETH) from the project’s smart contract, that person had agreed to return the hacked amount in full. The individual was able to reap a $9,000 “award” for the hack.

“We sent them back $5,000 as a reward along with the 5.5 ETH they used as seed capital for the attack,” SpankChain said in a tweet. “The attacker was also able to retrieve the 4,000 BOOTY that their hack immobilized. We purchased it back from them for $4,000.”

Earlier in the week, SpankChain officials took Spank.live offline to prevent any additional funds from being pilfered and then notified users about the breach, promising to reimburse for lost funds. Only about $9,000 consisted of customer funds.

In reaction to the hack, the company authored an article, titled, "We Got Spanked.”

IOTA’s TomTom gave a glimpse of how it could all work. He identified the need to fund projects aiming to utilize the tangle through the following statement:


The IOTA-ISO: A Hybrid between ICO and Kickstarter
TomTom was optimistic about the future given the growing interest to build on the IOTA tangle, as well as a new functional computer language known as Abra. With the ICO frenzy of 2017/2018 tarnishing the crowdfunding process, the team wants to create a hybrid between ICO and Kickstarter. This new process will be known as the IOTA-ISO.

The IOTA native token will be the ‘fuel’ for the entire process, thus avoiding situations of tokenizing that might result in regulatory scrutiny as seen with many ICOs.

TomTom goes on to state the following with regards to how it could all work:

The people and companies who wish to utilize our funding platform will commit to build systems and services using the IOTA technology, and using the native IOTA token as ‘fuel’ for their future services or other functions where there is a need for a value token in the system…

We suggest that the funders only use IOTA tokens for the funding as this secures this system and we can control the release of funds…

The early funders buy a future service by participating in the funding rounds and they are entitled to receive services or other IOTA based products when the systems start to make money.

Smart Contracts
TomTom goes on to explain how the entire project can be controlled using smart contracts. Firstly, the project owners and participants of the funding will need to create IOTA wallets where they can send and receive the IOTA token.

Secondly, the participants will need to have receipt wallets where they hold their receipt tokens as proof of rights according to the projects description.

For the smart contracts configuration, the following explanation is given:

We are able to set up a smart contract like system where these receipts are only sent from one wallet to another when an agreed amount of IOTA tokens is received as payment. We would not be part of such transactions whatsoever, only facilitating for this secure transaction and taking a small fee for facilitating with our technology.

Afri Schoedon, an Ethereum developer at Parity, took to Twitter to give the cryptocurrency community an update on the situation. According to a tweet from the Parity developer, there was a consensus issue on Ropsten, which resulted in a three-way fork between Geth, Parity, and one other Ethereum client.

This open letter to the Cardano community starts by explaining that when work on Cardano first started in 2015, "instead of launching an all-powerful foundation that would raise funds, manage development, encourage adoption and address the concerns of the community," it was decided to "diligently split the governance of Cardano into three legal entities: IOHK, Emurgo and the Cardano Foundation." The hope was that such a separation of powers would "ensure that the failure of one legal entity, if any, could not jeopardise or destroy the Cardano project."

The IOHK and Emurgo then make the following offer: Since the Cardano Foundation and its council "have not been able to execute their purpose in promoting and supporting the Cardano ecosystem," they agree to commit to the following actions until at least 2020:

IOHK & Emurgo: "hiring dedicated community managers for the Cardano ecosystem and assign them to growing and informing our community through meetup groups, events, educational efforts and other metrics that can be tracked."
IOHK: willingness to hire "Cardano Foundation personnel directly engaged in community management should they desire to leave the Foundation."
IOHK & Emurgo: starting "efforts in Japan to improve exchange access and community understanding of Cardano."
IOHK & Emurgo: scaling up "educational and marketing efforts to include more content about the Cardano protocols, developer resources and USPs of our ecosystem."
IOHK: hiring "an open source community manager to draft the Cardano improvement proposal process and begin its rollout."
IOHK: agreeing to expand "research scope to include the areas originally forseen for the Cardano Foundation."
IOHK: starting "a research agenda to design a decentralized Foundation built as a DAO to be deployed on the Cardano computation layer. We will announce a dedicated research center at a later date."
