3262  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Am I Encrypting Right? on: July 27, 2012, 01:43:10 PM

Or you could just use www.encryptfiles.net

It gives you the option to delete or shred when you encrypt Smiley

I would not use/goto www.encryptfiles.net

It has a bad rep on WOT. See http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/www.encryptfiles.net for details.
>encryptfiles.net

seems legit Cool

That's because people seem to think it's a trojan due to warnings by their anti-virus software. I would guess they are simply false-positives due to the nature of the software. I don't think I've used it before though.
there's no possible reason why antivirus software will think encryption software would be a virus. after all, do you see winrar, 7zip, or truecrypt setting off alarms?
3263  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How safe is this Uncomplicated Firewall setup? on: July 27, 2012, 01:40:56 PM
firewalls aren't going to protect you against 0day exploits, which is your biggest risk.
3264  Other / Meta / Re: "Censoring" off-topic posts on: July 26, 2012, 09:11:01 PM
No, that's harassment. It would be censorship if the "somebody" was somebody sent from government.
>implying censorship can only be done by the goverment
3265  Economy / Lending / Re: Bryan Micon's List of BTC Scams and Ponzi Schemes on: July 25, 2012, 06:23:24 PM
yay, another Bitcoin Savings and Trust hating thread thread! can you all just congregate yourselves to one thread so i don't have to deal with this bullshit?

ps. your title is misleading as 1 entry isn't really a "list". it's obvious you made this thread to attack Bitcoin Savings and Trust.
3266  Economy / Economics / Re: Biggest Scam Ever!! on: July 25, 2012, 04:32:42 PM
We must do something against this...
yes, let's bump the post after 1 hour because you're so impatient.

the 32 bit part is a real buzzkill. you won't find many buyers who will sacrifice their > 4GB ram just to save some money.

3269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: sendmany command line in windows on: July 21, 2012, 02:20:10 PM
I think there's a misunderstanding here.

payb.tc is asking "can I use 'bitcoin -server' as the SERVER, instead of using bitcoind" - yes, you can

grue thinks you're asking "can I use 'bitcoin -server' as the CLIENT, instead of using bitcoind" - no, you can't

The confusion arises from the fact that bitcond can act as both an RPC client and an RPC server, and bitcoin can act as both a graphical app and an RPC server.

Hope that clears it up!
No, I answered no because I interperted his post as "can you put this command line into bitcoin (gui), but with the -server argument". I said no because the gui doesnt parse commandline args like bitcoind does.

no
3271  Economy / Speculation / Re: Stability!!! on: July 19, 2012, 05:54:50 PM
considering it was $6 a few weeks ago, i wouldn't exactly say "stable"
3272  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Reverse-engineering and documenting Bitcoinica on: July 18, 2012, 10:54:11 PM
The trick is that if strings are immutable, and short strings are guaranteed to have unique memory locations, the a == "foo" comparison can actually be implemented as a direct pointer comparison rather than a slow string comparison. This is basically just as fast as a traditional enum, and in practice takes up the same amount of space. (integers in structures are usually not packed) Of course, comparing three letters is pretty quick as well, especially in the context of an interpreted language. FWIW if I'm not mistaken Python strings work this way, and it's considered "Pythonic" to use strings to replace enums.

Premature optimization is the root of all evil.
Premature optimization may be the root of all evil, but only if it makes the code harder to read, aka replacing the strings with status numbers. Enums doesn't reduce code readability, as it is essentially the same as strings, (except without the quotes). Secondly, enums are superior to strings because they are strongly type checked to prevent any undefined behavior, which may result from typos. In addition, IDEs can recognize enums and provide additional features such as auto completion and error detection, which boosts productivity.

3274  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: A little known ASIC benefit. on: July 18, 2012, 04:57:28 PM
prohint: if everybody had ASICs, wouldn't the difficulty be very high? And wouldn't that mean you need more ASICs (and more energy) to get the same amount of bitcoins? And wouldn't that mean more heat? just saying.

but not everyone will have ASICs... and it won't be profitable for people to buy ASICs at some point where we'll be using less electricity for the same amount of bitcoins b/c for every 40 FPGAs or GPUs shutdown, only one ASIC will be purchased/turned on.

not very specific on the numbers, but I think that's true.  However, someone with more time on their hands can do the math.

I'm off the eat pasta!
that will only be during the transition, like from cpu -> gpu. once the majority switched over, the benefits will be lost.
3275  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyway to fix a radeon 5870 ? on: July 18, 2012, 04:31:18 PM
I'm pissed, I just lost a card yesterday too.

Noticed I checked on my mining and had no shares submitted in like 20hrs, and go to restart the machine and couldn't remote, it was hard locked so I restarted it and it had like 5 rapid beeps and the GPU fan started at 100% throttle. Powered fully down and turned off PSU, turned all on, and it starts to windows (no monitor so software-wise) and I can log in remotely since VNC uses software rendering, but as soon as I try to start mining fan jumps up and computer hard locks. :|

It was running 80-85 under normal conditions of full mining, I had fans set with a 85 ramp up as it approached up to 100% so that it kept that as a ceiling.

I find it really interesting that it's letting it POST from a cold boot until put under load. A warm restart is the only time it doesn't post after an error locked it up.
well there's your problem
3276  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What will happen to people with non-BFL FPGAs (once ASIC arrives) on: July 18, 2012, 04:26:04 PM
Password cracking for hire?

because a lot of password systems use double sha256

3278  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: WTS Battlefield 3 + Back to Karkand Used Account on: July 18, 2012, 04:02:21 PM
companies are notorious for going against court rulings, even explicit ones. Like you can theoretically disagree to Windows' EULA, and opt to have a system without windows installed, very few company does it, even when a court ruling explicitly said that they must.

Anyways, the main issue is the seller yanking back the account. Not saying the seller will do that, but it's something to be aware of.
3279  Economy / Services / Re: VPS 800Mhz/512MB RAM - no monthly fees. on: July 17, 2012, 10:25:54 PM
Yes, but you need to send extra-paid SMS from CZ/SK only.
so we should pay a $28 fee to get you to do it?
3280  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: WTS Battlefield 3 + Back to Karkand Used Account on: July 17, 2012, 10:08:54 PM
but how will origin know? And you can change email and pass easily. You can even change name.

I just dont play the game for months and why not sell it?
the seller can recover the password, usually by contacting support. I'm not saying you will do it, but it's something to keep in mind for any potential buyers.
