I actually think that many of the posts here that seem to 'celebrate' those $10 buys are actually sarcastic and make fun of those puny trains. It's futile to expect something big as of now. We need to wait for fall, capitulation, or an ETF or something.

To be honest: that's my feeling, too. (I'm usually uber-bull expecting a rally right around the corner).

On the other hand: all the powerful runups in the past had come kind-of unexpected to me, at least regarding the size.

We may not need an ETF, capitulation or anything. It could really just happen by itself, with no apparent reason. (Of course we will attribute some single fitting reason after the fact and be quite sure that was it (like "Cyprus" for the April '13 runup), that's just how the human mind works)

We're up almost a whole percent today!!! What happened? Amazon accepting Bitcoin? Federal reserve announced it will keep Bitcoin reserves? Visa & Mastercard implementing Bitcoin payments with all their cards???

someone closed 800 BTC worth of shorts on bitfinex

It's almost as bad as outright increasing the maximum number of Bitcoins from the current 21M maximum.

Wachtwoord, do you think the limit should be permanently set to 1 MB? Or just that it should remain "limited" in order to drive a healthy fee market?

I think there should be a limit otherwise no-one will pay any meaningful fees ever and people will stop mining. The system will only work when there is a limited amount of space because if it is unlimited it is advantageous for miners to include transactions with any fee, even 1 Satoshi. If that happens Bitcoin will stop to function correctly as the block rewards decrease.

Why the limit should be at 1 MB? Well the same reason the maximum amount should be at 21M Bitcoin. If it is ever increased it creates a precedent to do so again, and again and again, ad infinitum. I signed up for Bitcoin with a 21M unit cap and a 1MB block cap. Any changes to that will force me to seriously reconsider my investment as the chances of Bitcoin going to zero will increase tremendously.

If people want the limitation to be removed I hope it's published as an altcoin (Bitcoin2) and the initial distribution as proposed by you Peter will be used.

No amount of fees being paid will result in more than 7 transactions to fit into a block.

Also: empirical evidence suggests people pay fees even if there's enough space in blocks (like right now).

I wonder which chain people would use in case of a fork over this issue. I'm guessing the one with lower tx fees.

Can I haz bounty?
3326  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 07, 2014, 07:28:29 AM
hey guys.

you know I would never endorse/promote any altcoin, but I ran an analysis of 237 alts and before publishing, I want to let you know the winner (most promising, best value proposition) is: NEWBCOIN.

This is no endorsement of newbcoin. Don't put in money you're not prepared to lose. Don't miss the train, though. Newbcoin going to Mars!

NewbCoin is different... it really could be the Bitcoin-Killer, next big thing.

Right now my account is called "Account #1". Can this name be changed?

We are planning to release Accounts and Transactions labeling in the future. We'd like to have this feature well-thought-out, so it won't be in the following days. (Storing labels in browser is easy, synchronizing to remote location is harder, but we want to use encrypted remote storage via transparent encryption/decryption through TREZOR, so you wouldn't need any passwords and it still will be secure).

Ah! I had thought about this before. I think this is a good way. Can't wait.

Slush suggested account feature as a replacement for coin control... being able to name accounts would make things much easier (to track origins of coins).

While the concept of a "necessary backing" is a fallacy in my book
"Backing" is a kind of awkward hack that attempts to limit the production of currency.

It never really worked in the first place, and it's completely unnecessary now that we can just use math to limit the supply of the currency.

This is the gist. Thanks!

3334  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum - Bitcoin client for the common users (friendly and instant) on: August 03, 2014, 01:00:06 PM
Excuse the intrusion, but why on earth would you recommend coinbase? Users should be in sole possession of their keys. Reddit is full of reports about coinbase holding BTC hostage due to overblown kyc/aml shit.

It seems coinbase is the new PayPal. Don't recommend it!

"I think I should test my wallet by typing my seed into a friends computer to see if it works"

At this point, I would think that no amount of explanation could save this person's ability to secure his bitcoins.

At least with Coinbase, they protect your bitcoins in a similar fashion to a bank, so most people are used to that.

Point taken. Still opposed to recommending coinbase or similar, though.

Why not recommend to get a trezor? Makes security easy.
3335  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum - Bitcoin client for the common users (friendly and instant) on: August 03, 2014, 10:50:18 AM
Thank you for your response.

I am trying to restore an existing wallet whose password was written down incorrectly and whose seed I hope is written down correctly.  How does choosing a new name restore a wallet of a different name?

I suppose I could delete Electrum and and reinstall it in order to change the password on the wallet in question.  I imagined it could be done without deleting and reinstalling.

I have never used a word processor, I don't even have one on my new computer. Embarrassed  Kinda makes it difficult to read the occasional word document sent to me.

An idea I just had is to install Electrum on somebody else's computer to make sure the seed is correct before I delete it from my computer or even try to restore it.

1. your seed has nothing to do with the name of the wallet or your password. As long as the seed is correct, you can name the file whatever and you can make the password whatever and the seed will always create the same addresses.

2. You can only change the password on a wallet by inputting the password and then setting a new password. So the only way you can retrieve your wallet is to make a new file (the name doesn't matter) and restore from your seed.

3. Don't put your seed into someone else's computer. Your bitcoins will be stolen.

4. I recommend you use Coinbase.

If want to check your seed, just click "New/restore" type in a random name. Any name is fine. Click Save. Then when it asks, click restore from seed, then type in your seed. If your seed is correct, you should see your addresses appear in the newly created wallet.

Excuse the intrusion, but why on earth would you recommend coinbase? Users should be in sole possession of their keys. Reddit is full of reports about coinbase holding BTC hostage due to overblown kyc/aml shit.

It seems coinbase is the new PayPal. Don't recommend it!

The problem I have with gold bugs who advocate a gold backed currency such as Rickards and Schiff is that gold backed currency has been tried and failed. It failed because of a central point of failure and in the US this central point of failure is the federal reserve and it failed to maintain a dollar peg to gold.  Einstein's definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."  By that definition, all gold bugs who want a gold backed currency are insane because it has been tried and failed miserably.  Don't try it again.  Bitcoiners are the sane ones for trying something different.

A gold backed digital currency would be great but these three conditions cannot exist simultaneously for money:
1.  Digital
2.  Backed by gold
3.  No third party risk (no central point of failure - decentralized)

The next best thing is to have 1 and 3 exist simultaneously, which leaves us with bitcoin.

With Bitcoin Specie, we get all three.

Bitccoin is not backed by gold so we don't get #2.

I hereby promise to give 1 oz of gold for 21,000,000 BTC or fractions of 1 oz of gold for respective fractions of Bitcoin to anyone who is willing to meet me in person. PM me if you want to redeem.

Here we go. Bitcoin is backed by gold.

Hey slush do you have any plans of offering the metal version in the shop?

He said above they have some left as replacements. They might throw these at the market, but it's not decided yet.

I have a feeling these first edition metal trezors could become quite valuable.

@slush, stick, cor: how many have been produced?
3338  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: August 02, 2014, 08:53:21 PM
I really hope that if people will have Trezor in their hands already, they'll start using its password management capability, if it will be convenient enough...

If convenient enough, I will definitely use it.

EDIT: I love how Bitcoin (as a side-effect so to say) improves general security practices and raises awareness.
3339  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitcoin Wallet Recovery Services - for forgotten wallet password on: August 02, 2014, 08:52:10 PM
Dave's service is working well!

unfortunately i had a mismatch in my password. I contacted Dave, without knowing him and i didnt know if i could trust him, and followed his guidelines for recovery. Ive send him the info he needed and a day later he was showing me the password mismatch.

Dave, thanks a lot!

I am actually more confident that it is a scam after your post

Come on guys. When you try to recover some password using the pywallet dump, you just send him a encrypted key with no funds, so he can recovered the password but recovers a private key with no funds. Thats 100% trustless.

But in order to know that, it would take knowing things about stuff.  Wink
Password =/= Private Key

what you say usually makes sense to me. Not this time. Care to elaborate what you mean?

3340  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: August 02, 2014, 08:31:10 PM
How far do you suppose one could take this thing?

In near future (except improving Trezor for bitcoin signing usage like BIP70 and multisig) we plan to turn Trezor into identity management token, something similar like failed myIDkey. In contrary to megalomaniacal vision of myIDkey, we want to start with low hanging fruit and improve stuff as time go.

There's already proof of concept for harddisk encryption protected by Trezor: https://github.com/trezor/python-trezor/blob/master/tools/encfs_aes_getpass.py This works only on Linux, but the concept can be implemented on any OS.

There's plenty possibilities how to integrate Trezor with all stuff directly, like PEM modules on Unix (ssh), Windows login, website authentication, email encryption and signatures etc.

It's really wide scope. Let's see how much interest of Trezor there'll be in Bitcoin community first :-).

this is so cool!

you're making the world a safer place ;-)
