This is incredibly painful for me to watch.

Just imagine for a second that you were a brilliant mathematician, you eat, shit and sleep math.

One day you see a big gathering, and someone has been chosen at random to answer a math question, and they will win untold fame and fortune.
The question is fun, if a little simple, but you have to squirm as you watch this nincompoop fumble around and fuck it up.

Guys like me who love servers, server architecture and scalability arguments, dream of days like this.

We love to overengineer even when it is not necessary (we try not to).

this is a no brainer, a quality problem.
If i knew that on date x, time y, that i was going to have n users hitting my server all at once, this would be an easy task.

It would be fun, it would go smoothly, I would have a plan.

I can only think the guys at MtGox are either grossly incompetent or incredibly greedy (they still have all this stuffed on to some box under their desk).

Torturous...

yes.  * sigh *

i put up a webserver once upon a time, that had 239k unique from the gitgo.  cold fusion and SQLServer.  went smooth.

this is embarrassing.

The most frightening thong about global warming is the ability of some people to not "believe" in it. As a scientist I don't believe in things, I understand things.

+1

i got to the frontpage after quite a wait.

but i got a MySQL error on the trading page.

Vastly more people would die from starvation in a massive economic breakdown in Greece than will die as a direct result of climate change in the worst case.  Even if tides rise a full 11 meters like the most extreme estimates claim, that will still take 100+ years to happen.  This kind of thing has been happening to Venice for hundreds of years.  No one is going to drown because they can't manage to escape the rising tides.

Honestly, kids.  Try and keep the global threats in perspective.

ummm... no.

it's the heat, in greece.  not the ocean-level rise.

look into it.
345  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a maximum difficulty? Or can it just go up forever? on: June 26, 2011, 05:17:07 AM
who cares?

when it gets to the point where a miner has to consider n-1=0 (where n=difficulty and 0=generated coin), it doesn't matter, does it?

Well if the client reaches a maximum storage limit before bitcoin hits THE mining peak, then we will all care, but thankfully that seems a non issue.

edit: btw, your math requires that difficulty = 1

oops - you're right, i was wrong.  but we're both wrong:

n-1=0 (where n=infinite difficulty...)

This will be very good for bitcoin. Maybe not so much for freedom

I'm gonna almost feel guilty making so much money off of those poor economic refugees. almost.

< shrug > again.

i don't worry so much about economic refugees.  wherever they go, they have a purpose in doing so, and therefore an intellect that can be dealt with.  but i wouldn't be so sure you're going to make money off them, if i were you - folks like that are usually pretty dedicated to their wealth.

what worries me is environmental refugees.  take the greeks - they are a perfect storm:  the worst economy in the EU at the moment, but they are also about to deal with the worst oncoming global warming issues.  it's a nasty combination - and they're not too likely to discuss it over tea...

< shrug >

the europeans have spent centuries having their net worth (in all its forms) claimed by their various governments, in the name of "national assets".

and they have spent centuries shredding those claims, and laws.  i spent a little time myself, 'helping out'.

look into the spanish "impuesto". for example.

as for tradehill's servers being located in chile...

at this point i would have to believe that tradehill's management has mastered the art of bribery (and it is an art) - or they wouldn't still have a functional website.

folks - don't ever get so lost in dogma that you ignore practicalities...

always room for good shit.

just for the hell of it, i'll take "never"; since nobody else has.

why the edit to the thread title?
352  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Black Hole (an idea, not FUD) on: June 23, 2011, 04:52:38 PM
y'know...

if you had two addresses like that, and a client that sent 0.00000001 BTC without a transaction fee, you'd have the rudiments of an unhackable, on-line voting system.

With users with more money to burn having more votes - it's just like the current system, but without the pesky issue of setting up corporations, controlling public opinion, etc. Cut out the middleman - Brilliant!

heh.  not really.  but think about it...

a separate client and blockchain, designed so only one person could own one sending address...  difficulty level of 0.001... log on and generate an amount equal to the number of elections you could vote in...

VoteCoin!

EDIT:  BitVote?

354  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Potential proof that Mt. Gox still has all our bitcoins. on: June 23, 2011, 09:02:33 AM
In response to a challenge that Mt. Gox was insolvent, MagicalTux, on IRC, decided to do a transfer of a pre-chosen number to prove they still had bitcoins.

"<MagicalTux> anyway, going to send to 1eHhgW6vquBY... the 424242.42424242 btc"

Here they are:

http://blockexplorer.com/address/1eHhgW6vquBYhwMPhQ668HPjxTtpvZGPC

I and probably 200 other people can verify that he made that statement before the coins were sent. Also, if it means anything, MagicalTux's nick was registered with a hostmask that matched previous ones and he demonstrated intimate knowledge of Mt. Gox.

I thought I'd just let you all know. Take this however you might, but I believe it puts to rest the theory that the hacker "cleared out" Mt. Gox. Hopefully someone who knows how to read blockexplorer can enlighten us, however. I hope that other IRC folks can verify this as well.

And now, a bunny:

wait.

that bunny HAS BEEN HACKED!!

look closely... where's the pancake on its head!!???
355  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What kind of person are you? on: June 23, 2011, 04:15:38 AM
I am an efficient exchanger of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

you win!

yeah.

we need better exchanges...

357  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Nuclear Energy. Do you want more or less? on: June 23, 2011, 12:15:49 AM
i want less.

my reasoning has little to do with proliferation, site leakage dangers, pollution, et alia - although i abhor them all.

actually, i approach the issue of nuclear power in the same way that i approach Bitcoin.  politically.

i see no difference in petro-based, hydro-based, hydrogen-based or nuclear-based energy infrastructures.  they are all too big, and the only possible winners in those games are huge corporations - who vie to rule the world on an equal footing with governments.  no individual can afford to refine his own oil, build her own reactor, create a dam that will power his life (when including the costs of water rights), or tinker together a high-pressure hydrogen environment at home.

i favor (and work for) solar and wind powered systems - because they can be scaled down profitably to a granular level.  yes:  large corporations can build them and sell the power - but individuals can too; and almost as effectively.

solar and wind power can be decentralized, yet retain full functionality - just as Bitcoin can be and does.

gosh that seems simple...
358  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So, what happens when mining for Bitcoins becomes unprofitable? on: June 22, 2011, 07:50:40 PM

There is more speculation around Bitcoin than there is commerce conducted with it, right?

i'm not sure.

but clearly, you yourself will not be speculating in mining equipment - so, subjectively at least, you are mistaken.

So are you suggesting that I should move to an AMD setup?

i would only suggest that if you find Bitcoin to be a worthy idea, you participate in what ever fashion seems best to you.

on a strictly technical level, if you want to mine then yes - go to AMD/ATI GPU products.

there are serious gamers out there who will pay well for your nvidia card.  it's a good one - for gaming...

EDIT:  see the post directly above this one.

I guess I will mine when the difficulty favors my Nvidia hardware.
Probably never going to happen.

I know. Bitcoin is getting too mainstream and too people are piling their CPUs and GPUs into the game.

that's not why.

this is why:
