It is possible, but I didn't do much testing on the miner before I updated the firmware so no way to know. I'll report back if I see it in any of my hosts miners with older firmware. This one is headed back to my host today or tomorrow.

I have tested this on S17 pro running "Wed Dec 25 09:47:07 CST 2019" firmware and when I hit "Save&Apply" the miner performs a full reboot and starts with this line the kernel log

Code:
Booting Linux on physical CPU 0x0

So I think it's safe to assume that is pretty much just a glitch in the latest firmware.

Grin
3404  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: It is 2020 time for a new diff thread. on: October 08, 2020, 07:14:18 PM
What is even worse is that markets aren't showing any real signs of recovery, Covid-19 cases are hitting a new ATH almost daily

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-cases/

It will probably take another year for things to slow down with the pandemic, and this could potentially lead to lower bitcoin prices or in the best case, flat price for an extended period of time, both scenarios aren't good for miners who paid a premium for the new gears, remember that these miners have a relatively short lifespan so even if you have free power there is no guarantee you will ever be able to ROI, this is why my main focus has been fast ROI.

I was talking to a large miner last night (in an attempt to get more information about how bitmain assemble their gears in Malaysia) and in the middle of our conversation we did talk about the exact topic we discuss here, and he brought a very interesting point which is the hydro season in China, many large players are counting on a nice difficulty drop by mid or end of this month when the rainy season in China is over and there is no more dirt-cheap power, we know that there are tens of thousands of gears which are now hashing at almost free power somewhere near the rivers in China, so it does make sense that these will have to go offline pretty soon, we don't know exactly how much the total hashrate there is, but I can only assume that it's at least 10-15%.

I believe a drop of 10-15% is almost certain by the end of the month, the question which remains is that are these S9s going to be replaced by other more efficient gears, in other words, will we have 10-15% of the hashrate leave the network and that's it, or will that be replaced by more efficient gears and thus keep the difficulty flat or take it even higher, I tend to believe that the drop will be more than the new hashrate, so we will very likely have a drop of some kind.

Having said that, the drop which I now expect isn't going to be a life-changer for those who paid 2.5-3.5k for S19/S19pro, but that should at least reduce their overall ROI by a bit.

These are some beautiful mining containers, i really like them and i don't think i have seen anything that was better built than this, good job.
3406  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 08, 2020, 01:18:28 AM
When this happens all of the chains have the same error though, this would lead me to believe that the issue would be not be specific to a single hashboard. Also, I have power cycled and rebooted many times and never saw this issue. It only seems to happen when I update settings and click the "save&apply".

Is that specific to just this latest firmware? I never had an issue when hitting save and apply, it actually seems like it performs a full reboot when that happens, but since I have not used the latest firmware so I can't really tell, I can only assume it's some sort of a bug, but if a complete reboot solves the problem then I shouldn't worry about it.

By the way, thanks for sharing all of this information, only a few people here do, the majority would disappear the moment their miners start hashing away. Grin
3407  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 07, 2020, 10:51:16 PM
I tried it on this miner with the latest firmware and it does still work.

Would be great if you could mention that in the thread so that others know it works on the latest firmware as well.

While testing that out, I changed the setting multiple times and ran into an issue where the miner did not come up after applying changes to the configuration page. I saw this once before and figured it was just a fluke, but it happened again. Comes back up with a reboot though, so not much of an issue.

Actually, this could be much of an issue, or at least, it will eventually be ( sorry to let you know), but if you follow the kernel closely, you will see these 4 lines.

Code:
2020-10-07 18:57:35 temperature.c:695:get_temp_info: read temp sensor failed: chain = 0, sensor = 0, chip = 55, reg = 0

Code:
2020-10-07 18:57:39 temperature.c:695:get_temp_info: read temp sensor failed: chain = 0, sensor = 1, chip = 40, reg = 1

Code:
2020-10-07 18:57:39 temperature.c:695:get_temp_info: read temp sensor failed: chain = 0, sensor = 2, chip = 180, reg = 0

Code:
2020-10-07 18:57:43 temperature.c:695:get_temp_info: read temp sensor failed: chain = 0, sensor = 3, chip = 195, reg = 1

I think your Chain 0 has a bad contact, nothing is wrong with all 4 temp sensors (0,1,2,3), this is a loose chip/heat sink, it hasn't exactly fallen, but it isn't 100% in contact, what usually happens when you see all 4 senors down is that the hash board will work at times, fail to work on another, sometimes it works for a whole week and then goes down, a reboot may fix it, you may need to reboot it 2-3 times, then it works for an hour and drops, the whole miner reboots, eventually and after x period of time (x is purely based on your luck) it will stop hashing and you will have to remove it from the miner for the other two boards to work uninterrupted.

To anyone else, I would advise against the attempt of fixing it, but since you said you are planning to fix your host's hash boards, then this chian 0 could be a great start to practice, you will need to figure out which chip is loose, remove it and then solder it back.

3409  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Some very 'bad' news on s19 shipments. on: October 07, 2020, 06:53:17 PM
Ok now that is a different story, after reading their emails for 10 times or so I think what I understood from this part:

Quote
... we will deduct the APW7 price with new order, and this amount difference will be transfered to you Bitmain balance account which can be used in future orders.

Is that you will need to re-order the miner without a PSU through the single-use link they sent you, which is a special link to a miner only, and they want you to choose USD wire so that the order won't expire until they mark it "paid", they will probably deduct the mount from the first paid order and send it to fund the "new" order, and the balance will be sent to your account.

So it looks like you need to email them again and get another link, it's really hard to understand Bitmain staff, I guess we all suffer from this.

A tip: Always email them in the morning (China time) you will get a much faster response.
3410  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 07, 2020, 05:57:36 PM
It's reasonably cool here so fans are running around 50%. I'm going to figure out a way to limit cooling to stress test it before I declare it fixed.

Limit the fans speed to 10-20% by following this guide , this used to work on all previous firmware versions but I am not sure about the latest firmware, however, I think it's likely going to work just fine.

By the way, upgrading to the latest firmware means you are now stuck with it forever, I hope you were aware of this before actually doing it.
3411  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Venezuela national bitcoin mining pool on: October 07, 2020, 06:27:46 AM
That is a good point, but this is just too late for any country to do now IMO, even if they were able to obtain a large portion of the current 140EH we have now (which is nearly impossible for a single entity to do) will they have a spare 10MW or whatever large amount of electricity needed for that? Maybe, but unlikely, and then again, because mining is nothing but a business, I am pretty sure that individual large scale miners who have understood the game by mining for years will be able to beat a corrupt government pretty easily, another thing to consider is that Venezuela doesn't have access to an infinite supply of U.S dollars, Euros or any other semi-stable fiat currency, so it isn't just about a simple "print" command that can get them the money they need to buy millions of mining gears and make huge mining farms.

With that being said, that will still be a possibility, the fact of the matter is, any country might attempt that, I would worry more if a country with endless $ like the U.S does that.
3412  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 06, 2020, 10:46:51 PM
I don't think that is confidential information, assembling thousands of miners isn't something you can keep a secret, unless specified otherwise by my source then i will not reveal the information.
3413  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 06, 2020, 08:00:38 PM
I stand corrected then, I confrimed from a Malaysian source that Bitmain does indeed assemble some of it's miners in Malaysia, still "assembly" is quite a broad word as in we don't know to which level of assembly they go to.

I still think the quality isn't very different because 90% of the issues that all of these 17 series gears have in common is the thermal paste/solder, whereby the whole chip fall down or just the heatsink drops (both lead to a none-working hash board) I highly doubt soldering the chips nor glueing the heatsinks on them is done in Malaysia, it's more likely that they receive ready to use hash boards, control boards, PSUs and a bunch of screws and all they do is put them all together, and just by doing so, you can't really harm the hash boars unless you intentionally do it, and even then, you need a lot of time and effort.

on the other hand,  if the assembly goes to a much lower level like soldering the chips and all, then the difference in quality will vary greatly, however, all the 17 series gears I ordered came from China, and the quality is terrible overall, so I still believe it's a matter of luck after all.

I shall confirm what does actually happen in the warehouse of Malaysia in a few days, will keep you updated.
3414  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 06, 2020, 05:18:42 PM
As far as I know, Bitmain doesn't make any mining gears in Malaysia, it's probably just a sorting hub to reduce import/tax costs for countries that aren't so friendly with goods coming in directly from China, what happened to you was probably nothing but a bad luck with one of the batches, Someone said that the recent batches are slightly better build as far as the thermal/glue is is concerned, which does make sense.

Please keep us updated with your attempt to fix this broken S17 pro, if possible, describe the issues you are facing just in case someone had the same problem and they could help you fix it.
3415  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Small miner viability question: USB-C bus power? on: October 06, 2020, 01:49:51 PM
What do you mean, capped by the power source? It *is* the power source. "all devices you plug into it" won't need to provide anything. They'd be loads.

That's true in your specific case, I was taking about the general use of these PD adaptors since they are two-way connection like how NFW explained here:

What *is* interesting is that the standard I linked to earlier says that usb-c PD is a 2-way connection.

In other words, if you plug in your phone into your laptop or tablet, your phone can charge your laptop, but since your miners won't have any other source of power like battries or so, then please ignore this whole part.

What I don't understand about this whole PD protocol is the way it "negotiate" the voltage needed with the plugged in devices, in the article that NFW linked it says:

Allows low power cases such as headsets to negotiate for only the power they require.

We know that PD can output 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, 20V, so without exchanging some sort of data/signal between the headsets and the USB PD, how is it possible that you can charge different devices which require different voltages?

How about using something like this and your miner has two USB ports, one for charging and another for data? or one USB port for charging and another ethernet port for data?
3416  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Small miner viability question: USB-C bus power? on: October 06, 2020, 01:04:45 AM
... or is everyone stuck on 5V/3A which is still stickminer territory?

That seems like it, most USB C ports I have seen are only for data transfer, they don't even support video output, there might be a mobo or two that support both but I am pretty sure they are pretty limited and can't be targeted as potential clients for your miners.

Wonder what it would take to build a USB Type C hub with data and PD...

That could work, althought the cost of that thing might be a bit too much, another potential problem is that this will be capped by the power source, many PD adaptors can do up to 20v/5a but that doesn't mean all devices you plug it to will be able to provide that.
3417  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 2 AntMiner T9+ Red Fault Light, no Mining Connection on: October 06, 2020, 12:31:02 AM
If you are using the latest firmware from Bitmain try to run the miner at low power mode. You can find it on miners configuration under "work mode".
Then try to run again lets if it fixes your issue.

That's a good point, but actually, if he indeed flashed the latest firmware then he is stuck with it, in other words, migrating to another firmware for testing purposes won't be as easy because Bitmain did pretty "well" locking these miners with the latest firmware.

I am also eager to hear from OP, I still think it's either a power-related issue or the miner is dead ( all hash boards are dead), I hope the former is the case.
3418  Local / العربية (Arabic) / Re: بروتوكول Uniswap on: October 05, 2020, 07:32:24 PM

It's done, and it's almost flat with just -0.0858% which doesn't mean anything because that tiny drop could be the affect of luck and not a single miner has left the network, very bad news for those who are counting on either a drop in difficulty or a spike in price, flat price and difficulty works for me, but to many people, this only prolongs their ROI given that most of them think if the price doesn't go up then the difficulty will have to drop which hasn't been the case for quite some time now.
