3401  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitlicense in May - what will happen? on: May 06, 2015, 10:26:50 AM
.....

The ETF needs the Bitlicense so it will start to trade after that date, when ? same day, couple of days?

.....

The ETF needs approval from the SEC before it can start trading. Nobody has any idea how long that could take, or if the SEC will approve it at all. The Bitlicense is not what's holding it back.

isn't bitlicence already done? they still need to regulate it? i thought it was ready, i think the reason must be something else

.....

The second comment period is over but Coinbase is trying to get more changes made before it launches.

http://www.newsbtc.com/2015/05/03/bitcoin-company-coinbase-drops-a-final-bomb-on-bitlicense/

Quote
Coinbase has urged the Bitcoin community to voice their concerns to the NYDFS Superintendent Benjamin Lawsky (@BenLawsky). While we are unsure if such unofficial requests would be addressed properly, the amendments could reach floor upon the final launch of BitLicense, the regulation that haunts.
3402  Economy / Speculation / Re: I'm All In - Sold My House! on: May 06, 2015, 10:19:00 AM
Is selling the house to buy bitcoin not a tad bit risky Shocked
I mean where will you live?
I don't own a house, but I still have a roof over my head. possibilities include
a) Renting a house
b) Move to my vacation home
c) RV
d) Move in with a friend
e) Move in with parents

IF the prices of homes are cheap in that state why not?

You can always sell a house and downgrade, but I wouldnt suggest it too everyone. I think most people would select option E) as a simple viable way, then go move back out not owning a house but probably a splitting rent in a apt or something.

I have friends who crash on different friends pads every night.

Worst case scenario, YMCA offers lodge and wifi for $5 a month.

No, worst case scenario is a cardboard box when it's raining or snowing. I assume he still has the bitcoins so he could always sell them to avoid the cardboard box.

so the SEC needs it to be able to approve the ETF??

Yes, it cannot start trading without SEC approval and the approval process has been dragging on forever.

3405  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bigger blocks coming in release 0.11 on: May 05, 2015, 05:14:54 PM
If 20MB block size comes with pruning feature, i'm OK for this.  Wink
i want a counterparty ...  Grin

Satoshi said it would make sense to introduce pruning when the blockchain got too big. If a 20MB block size is going to be introduced it would be stupid to delay introducing pruning too.
3406  Other / Off-topic / Re: Beards found to be dirtier than a toilet seat on: May 05, 2015, 05:03:03 PM
Dishcloths are probably the dirtiest thing in the house and we wash our dishes with them!

When you think about it they must be covered in months worth of bits of rotten food.
3407  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can the Winklevoss twins actions be explained? on: May 05, 2015, 04:32:56 PM
A big reason for them not cashing out might be liquidity, but another could be limits on cash withdrawals. In 2013 BTC china and Mt Gox were the main exchanges where it was possible to dump a huge amount of Bitcoins. I think Mt Gox limited withdrawals to $1 million per year even before they started blocking cash withdrawals. I guess BTC china and all the other exchanges had limits on how much cash you could withdraw a year.
3408  Economy / Speculation / Re: SecondMarket Bitcoin Investment Trust Observer on: May 04, 2015, 08:35:24 PM
My favorite ask of the day, $2.5MM per BTC Smiley

I remember someone put an ask of one Doge for one Bitcoin on when Doge hit Cryptsy, and someone paid it! They probably bought it off themselves as a stunt to try and pump the price up.

That ridiculously priced ask sounds similar, but nobody's bought it yet.
3409  Economy / Speculation / Re: The $250 barrier may be broken this month on: May 04, 2015, 08:03:57 PM
I think it's important to watch the current short-term support lines, as well. It remains to be seen whether we've just broken them or bounced off of them, while stretching them for a couple of USD. These are my lines I'm watching:

Loads of people are watching to find out if we go below the 237 support line. I expect loads of sells if we go below that line.
3410  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitstamp Withdrawal delay?! on: April 10, 2015, 01:05:21 AM
If you read the SEPA small print I think there might be words to the effect that if they mess up your transfer they can charge you loads of money merely to find out what they did wrong. I think the relevant small print comes under the title of "investigations". Things can go wrong at the bank's end, not only Bitstamp's end.
3411  Economy / Speculation / Re: Going back down to 230, then 180, then 150, then 66? on: April 09, 2015, 07:46:31 PM
never sell at a loss when a crash happens you dont sell... you buy, and you buy as much as you can

This is not a rule never sell at a loss, the smartest have at times had to sell at a loss to be able to continue trading with something that is not sinking! With you mentality when a crash happens and you keep buying, what happens when the crash is to major to bounce back anywhere near where it was? If you see a crash coming sell at a loss and buy back at a later date when it has balanced out and you end up with more without risking more. The only guys that can hold all the way down are the guys who brought in early on.

I had the mentality to never sell at a loss when I got into alts, and held some until they became near worthless. I now wish I had got 50% OF my money back when I had the chance. Although bitcoin's not the same as a shit alt I now consider selling at a loss if the price crashes far enough.
3412  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: "Known scammer Josh Garza of GAWMiners launched a Bitcoin exchange - Mineral" on: April 09, 2015, 07:31:23 PM
Although everybody involved or interested in crypto for longer knows to stay away from Gaw, Homero and anything that they touch and ruin, some new people might still get scammed if there are too few information and warnings. I learned about hashlets from my friend and at that time I didn't know about this forum and bought some. Got lucky to learn its a scam here, but it was too late, their ponzi began collapsing so I had to take part in that ridiculous ''hashpoints mining'' and then sold my paycoins to make up for loss on hashlets. In the end it was about even, but at the expense of people that didn't knew paycoin was a scam also and bought them...

Current members of the community understand that.  It is the new members that I fear will fall for the scam.  Those are the ones who need the warning.

Mineral reminds me of Mintpal because nobody is certain who owns it, although in Mineral's case it's probably Josh Garza. Mintpal ripped off a lot of old timers in addition to new members of the community because nobody knew a scammer owned it. Thanks for letting us know Josh Garza probably owns Mineral.
3413  Economy / Speculation / Re: China lower the power price and cause bitcoin crash? on: April 09, 2015, 09:19:20 AM
It has been confirmed that the power rate in China will drop by 2 cents(yuan) ? Could this trigger the bitcoin crash?

Who confirmed that the power rate in China will drop by 2 cents?

Anything like "I just lent this guy some BTC. I trust him and I'll respond here when I get my money plus a load of profit back in a few days". As an example here's one person who trusted pirateat40.

The Business:
Over the last few months I have been selling BTC to a group of local people.  Now this is a don't ask don't tell group of people so I can't tell you exactly where and to whom the coins ultimately end up with but so far its been pretty painless.   During this last week I maxed out my available coins both personally and "leased" from other members and they needed a lot more.  Up until now, I have dealt with my core group of friends and been able to handle the requests, but they seem to be getting larger and more frequent.  So now I'm looking into other methods for keeping a consistent storage or on-demand availability of coins.  I have two plans available for those sitting on coins.

On-Demand
When an order comes in that is over what I have available I'll send out a request to users in this plan requesting the total needed.  The first to respond gets the deal and the transfer is made.  These coins will be tide up for 1 business day to give me enough time to settle the transaction and acquire the coins to return. This plan pays a flat 3.5%.

Storage
This plan works as an ongoing commitment.  You would send coins anytime to the address provided and you would earn interest on a daily basis.  You can withdraw your balance at anytime, but I do request that you give me a couple hours to insure I have coverage for the next order.  Interest payments are paid out ever 3 days until either you withdraw the funds or my local dealings dry up and I can no longer be profitable. This plan pays 1% per day.

Now I would hope to have enough people on the storage plan that I wouldn't have a need for the on-demand but I'll see how it goes.  I ultimately want the ability to provide coins at anytime and any amount for these guys and we can all share in the profits.

I've created my own custom management software that I've built to monitor deposits, withdraws and interest payments.  As this gets bigger I'll build a front end for it so users can view and manage there account and maybe putting that domain btclending.com to good use.

For more information send me a PM or just ask below.  You can check out my OTC ratings in my signature.

Edit: I forgot to mention that dealing with anything less than 50BTC is more work than its worth so I've made that the minimum on both plans.

Thanks
I just lent this guy some BTC. I trust him and I'll respond here when I get my first interest payment in 3 days.  Smiley
3415  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bye Bye Buttercoin on: April 08, 2015, 04:52:28 PM
We know they picked a ridiculous name and that no one apparently even heard of them until they declared bankruptcy. Did they do anything right? Anyone investing in them should learn to ask better questions about a business plan next time.

Of course they did something right, they raised at least $1.3m from investors including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Y Combinator, Centralway Ventures, Google Ventures and Wedbush Securities. That must have given them some big fat pay packets during the short period Buttercoin was open.
3416  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fingerprint private key on: April 07, 2015, 10:45:47 PM
I would be worried not only about creating it online, but the inherent security of finger print scanners. I bought one to experiment with security for my laptop. It was cool. But once it was working properly the hacker in me set out to defeat it. Unfortunately it was easy. I lifted my print from a drinking glass with Scotch tape and pencil lead dust (not even superglue vapor). I placed the tape on a different finger and scanned it. It was far too easy.  Undecided

My favorite fingerprint hack is the fake finger made out of gummy bears.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/05/16/gummi_bears_defeat_fingerprint_sensors/

Quote
A Japanese cryptographer has demonstrated how fingerprint recognition devices can be fooled using a combination of low cunning, cheap kitchen supplies and a digital camera.

First Tsutomu Matsumoto used gelatine (as found in Gummi Bears and other sweets) and a plastic mould to create a fake finger, which he found fooled fingerprint detectors four times out of five.
3417  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Violates Principle of Fungibility on: April 07, 2015, 10:35:40 PM
I have not heard of any coins refused by anyone due to "taint." If you had a coin that had at some point been through a wallet belonging to silk road et al you can still buy stuff at overstock or reserve travel at expedia and you could still buy things with it in the market place here.

Btc-e refused to deal with some coins from evolution.

Coinfire had a story about it.

Quote
In a surprise move, BTC-e has suspended withdrawals from the cryptocurrency exchange in an effort to stop coins from the Evolution theft being exchanged and withdrawn.

http://coinfire.io/2015/03/21/btc-e-suspends-withdraws-to-stop-stolen-coin-dump/

They updated it to say btc-e had no further comments to make.

Quote
Update: BTC-e admins have reached out to Coin Fire to state that withdrawals have been re-enabled and that they have no further comments regarding the situation moving forward regarding this or any other security issue. The staff member originally speaking with Coin Fire has informed our team to speak with the administrators only moving forward and reiterated that the exchange has no comment.
3418  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation on: April 05, 2015, 10:42:02 AM
Aren't they just developers of Bitcoin Core ?

How can they control bitcoin if bitcoin is decentralized currency ?
I think foundation is no needed anymore

They don't control Bitcoin. It's a member association who is collecting money from members and use it to pay some of the devs so that they can focus fulltime on bitcoin. Furthermore they do PR and some lobbying as fas as I know.
It's like Mozilla Corp.

Who decided who gets to be the main devs? The Bitcoin Foundation must have a big influence over them considering it pays them. It might not completely control Bitcoin, but it must have a big influence on the main devs, which gives it a certain amount of control over Bitcoin.
3419  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi on: April 05, 2015, 01:37:53 AM
Hmm...I believe he's always amongst us, trying not to reveal but at the same time to continue developing the coin. Maybe for satoshi, it's better this way so that he could avoid all the attention.

I don't think he will ever reveal his true identity, but he might post some updates to Bitcoin sometime if he's been working on something. They would be merged with the old Bitcoin code in no time if we knew they came from Satoshi.
3420  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BTER.com hacked| 7170 BTC stolen |DON'T KEEP YOUR MONEY ON AN EXCHANGE| REOPENED on: April 03, 2015, 07:59:24 PM
..........
The coins were sent through a mixer so they are impossible to trace now. Some people tried but gave up once they went through the mixer. Bter even offered a reward to anyone who could trace where they went.

offering a reward won't bring the coins back at this stage. as you say they had plenty of time to mix the coins.
Wrong. A mixer isn't a final step for privacy. Yes, a mixer does help but it can be traced. It is just very difficult(!), so hopefully Bter gets lucky.

Has anyone ever managed to trace coins sent through a mixer, or is it only theoretically possible? I guess it might be harder to trace coins sent through a high volume mixer.
