Then the threads that will be getting created here en masse will be "I lost my Secret Key please reset". There are several two factor options available on the new forum software and I if theymos was going to implement them on this forum he likely would have by now but the current software isn't great for this.

Think I’ll end up on 70 points for the week, I got City as 5-0. Looks like a really bad week for everybody tbh, mediocrity all around Sad

Well if it wasn't for unyil that would have probably earned you bastard of the week  Grin. I had the Man City game down as 3-0 and ended up with a measly 40 points total. Better than nothing I suppose.

Edit: Table has updated. You got 60. Unyil got 130. Cicciobtc moves up to only 20 points behind StephenCurry333 with 80 points and both me and steph stay in our same places with 40 points each. I think it really is a fight between the top five now.

The Bot Bubble:  Click Farms Have Inflated Social Media Currency
https://newrepublic.com/article/121551/bot-bubble-click-farms-have-inflated-social-media-currency

I just read this and I don't see how it's relevant to my suggestion. My suggestion would actually stop this sort of behaviour because this is what is likely going on now. Much like people are farming facebook accounts and likes etc people have been farming accounts here for years and now they'll be doing so with merit. In fact, it's much easier and probably much more profitable to farm accounts here now. On facebook you need a valid email address and a phone number. Here you need neither of those. Now, people farm accounts in an industrial scale both here and on facebook because it's completely free to do so other than a minimal bit of effort (which is obviously well worth it). Create an account, make some shitposts or copy and paste something and earn from any one of the hundreds of crapcoin campaigns that are constantly willing to pay you to spread their scam. If the only way you can have a signature here is to pay a hefty fee then this pretty much puts a stop to this industrial abuse instantly. Genuine users can have one or two accounts to post/earn with but the people who come here to abuse lazy campaigns with their dozens to hundreds of accounts are out of luck.

I just got my first 10 points this week, had Liverpool to win 1-2, when WBA scored I was glad as I thought that would be it but when I check when the game ended to my surprise I see the equaliser. I had Watford 2-2 draw but they ended with a 0-0 which still gave me first 10 points of the week.

I also got ten points on that game but had 1-1 down instead. Measly 20 points so far but seems that's pretty much the best everyone else did apart from unyil again who leads the pack with a massive 70 points so far:

Oh look, another thread that is probably the fifth this week that has been trashed:

What has changed in your life by Bitcoin?

Bitcoin has provided positive monetary effects in my life. My view of the current financial system has changed.
What are the changes in your life?

Bitcoin has provided positive monetary effects in my life. My view of the current financial system has changed.
What are the changes in your life?
Bitcoin changes my life in financial aspect. Yes bitcoin  help me in my financial status it give me income with big profit. So many things that change me with the help of bitcoin.

Bitcoin has provided positive monetary effects in my life. My view of the current financial system has changed.
What are the changes in your life?
bitcoin helps me apot in mny things bitcoin is the reason why im so successful right now so im very thankful to bitcoin

bitcoin has changed my finances and I'm sure bitcoin will make my future brighter

And not surprisingly people are copy and pasting from reddit again:

I have gained so much more than wealth from Bitcoin. It has opened my eyes to the world of computer science, taught me about markets and economics, pounded into my head the importance of being street smart and never trusting any person or business unconditionally with financial matters, and, most importantly, given me exposure to some of the most interesting, intelligent people around. Cheesy

Shit's mind-numbing. I swear I've lost IQ points moderating this forum.

^  Wtf...  It was 0 - 2 the last time I checked and thought it was over.  Cheesy

And can WBA still get out of the relegation zone with 4 (?) games left...?  That could be the reason why they're playing their hearts out.

Mathematically I think they can, but it also depends on the results of the teams above them. They're pretty much relegated because of this but they certainly shouldn't give up. If they won all their games and the teams above them didn't then they can get out but the chances of that happening are slim.
3427  Other / Meta / Re: My friend introduce me to btc. At first I was hesitant..... on: April 21, 2018, 01:32:42 PM
I've already said a few times that I think the pay for a signature solution is a good one. But it seems that theymos is set against it so I've been trying to think of other ways to achieve it.

He can always change his mind. I also don't think he's stated he would be against being able to purchase them in addition to ranking up naturally. We have Copper membership so Silver and Gold isn't a stretch and offering them in addition to being able to rank up shouldn't be any issue at all. He has already stated that the next step will be likely to remove signatures altogether so I think even sig spammers would rather at least have the option to buy them as opposed to not being able to have them at all. Even an impoverished person could probably beg steal or borrow the money to be able to purchase a sig to use an account here especially if it's their only source of income. Most of the people who are posting here will likely already have enough to buy one any way.

First off merit farming is increasingly difficult for them as the initial distribution drys up. Tying the availability of signatures to earned merit on an ongoing basis will slowly put signature spammers out of business.

It get's harder for sure, but people have so many alts and "friends" here that they just constantly trade them between themselves for shitposts every-time they get them and that's what they do. If you have alts or friends here of course you're going to look to give it to one of them rather than merit a deserving post.

Why does the forum ban ICOs from bidding in the banner ads auction but still allow them to advertise freely in signatures?

That's exactly the question I asked especially because all it does is further hurts the forum. Money that could have gone to the forum is now just saved or paid out to sig spammers to cause even more mess whilst the forum suffers financially.

New predictions are in but only for 5 games; the Monday game is missing. Don't forget to fill in your prediction for the Everton - Newcastle game later Wink Happy Saturday everyone  Cheesy

The same thing happened with the last round. It'll just be included with next weeks games. Just make sure to check in on Monday after it's updated.

I'm not expecting to get many points from this round. West Brom game could be interesting especially coming back from a win at Old Trafford and if they can win this there may be a chance they could save themselves from relegation but Liverpool are still going to be a tough team to beat.

Yeah, I couldn't get online in time to put in my usual 3-0 prediction for Liverpool. Only online now and Ings scored his first in a really, really long time. Not sure why BBC can't just put in all the games and remove them if cancelled. Not that I've missed many this way, but I can imagine it hurts those fighting for top spots.

Who else thinks City will take their feet off the gas for the remainder of the season? Nothing else to play for but records and player awards, but I'd expect more run outs for fringe players, maybe good bets for draws?

Ugh. Had 1-2 down to Liverpool and West Brom just equalised for 2-2 in the 88th minute. It's always more frustrating when you get fucked in the last few minutes.

I think City will still win comfortably, though Swansea are fighting to stay out of the relegation spots so maybe we could see an upset depending what team City put out. They might be trying to start players so they can qualify for medals due to having to have played a minimum amount of games.
3429  Other / Meta / Re: My friend introduce me to btc. At first I was hesitant..... on: April 21, 2018, 12:52:26 PM
Why is theymos against the idea of paid signatures? I'm guessing you've discussed this with him. It would literally prevent all this bullshit that's currently going on. Like it wouldn't have to be much. Like $250 as ball figure. That would prevent the shitposters from third world countries making unlimited accounts and earning a full time wage for their country with nothing but shit posts.

It's the best solution. It doesn't get rid of signatures all to together and it would mean whoever has a signature will stand out more. Signatures are good for listing personal projects and other things and not just signature campaigns.

I don't believe he's elaborated as to why he's against it. As a middle ground we could experiment and offer the option to buy them in addition to being able to rank up naturally. Like we already have with Copper Rank we can have Silver and Gold Member. Silver gets you all the benefits a Full Member for maybe $150 and Gold gets you all the benefits of a Hero for $250. I don't see why this would be an issue because people can still rank up normally or just purchase the rank if they are willing and people do this by buying accounts anyway. Offering these ranks would severely limit account farming. If this was the only way to get them it would pretty much stop account farming 100%.
3430  Other / Meta / Re: My friend introduce me to btc. At first I was hesitant..... on: April 21, 2018, 12:06:27 PM
^  Not a good idea imo.  Those idiots are obviously doing this professionally.  So they'd be willing to pay no matter how high the fee is.  While it's the real users who would rather leave.

How so? Can you explain how the "real" users would leave? Most of the "real" users have already left because this forum has just been swarmed and overtaken with the shitposters the pharmacist listed. Everything will be the same apart from you don't have a signature at all unless you pay for it. These users do it professionally because it is currently 100% free to create an unlimited amount of accounts so they do. How is your average, unemployed illiterate Filipino/Indonesian going to afford $500 per account for a signature on his dozens of accounts? If this was the case most people would be limited to one or two accounts and it wouldn't be profitable to do this industrially. There isn't really any other way to prevent this sort of abuse because accounts can be easily farmed and now they are now done so along with merits (or they just trade them between their "friends").  It doesn't effect anyone at all other than sig spammers because users who come here just to post aren't penalised at all. The only people who would complain about this are the type of people who complain about merit and they wouldn't be missed at all.
3431  Other / Meta / Re: Upper cap for posts to prevent people wasting their merits in famous topics ? on: April 21, 2018, 10:35:59 AM
Why not put some upper cap for merits for each and every post ? I mean one post may have only some certain amount of merits.

Why should we limit it? If someone spends hours writing or maintaining a thread then people should be able to merit it how they see fit. If people think a post or thread is worth a thousand merits then let them merit it so. It always blows my mind how many threads people are going to create complaining about merit just to try get some themselves or assure others don't get as much as they should.

Yes, big people do get easy merits due to their fame or big people's posts get more attentions hence more merits.

Or maybe they get them for writing helpful. Informative posts. People should try it themselves. You never know, you might get some merit.
3432  Other / Meta / Re: My friend introduce me to btc. At first I was hesitant..... on: April 21, 2018, 10:07:44 AM
Check this out.  The vast majority of posts in this spam megathread say exactly the same thing, and it makes me think this is either a bunch of alt accounts or there's some sort of template circulating in Indonesia or the Philippines.  The basic idea that keeps repeating here is:

My [friend/son/coworker/husband/brother/classmate] introduced me to bitcoin.  At first I [was hesitant/reluctant/didn't believe/didn't listen/was confused], but [insert happy ending here].

Welcome to bitcointalk. I trash one of those why did you come to bitcointalk threads probably a few times a week. They're saying that because that's why they are all here because their friend/son/coworker/husband/brother/classmate probably did in fact tell them about this forum. They probably also told them that if they can't speak English very well just copy a post from earlier in the thread or google for an asnwer and we can see that from the second and third replies which are both from reddit:

I bought my first bitcoins for a dollar each back in early 2011 but they weren't an investment, I spent them almost as fast as I bought them. After starting BitBrew, I've purchased very few, instead focusing on different projects that contribute to the cryptocurrency economy as well as earning BTC. As a result, I've had thousands of bitcoins pass through my wallets over the years but only a handful tucked away for the future.

Would I have saved a few more if I knew then what I know now? Sure. Do I have any regrets? None whatsoever.

In May 2011, I got in at $12-$30. Then there was the crash of June and I lost some interest thinking I'd lost all the money. I promptly forgot about it and at some point, when Bitcoin-Qt became enrcryptable, I locked up my wallet with an impenetrable password. I continued to buy sporadically throughout the summer sending the coins to the locked wallet, occasionally looking at the BTC price throughout 2012 and having a chuckle.

Then at the beginning of 2013 when it all headed for the moon, I sat down and attempted to open my wallet… but of course could not put the pword together for the life of me. I've tried everything and it really sucks.

I most likely would have spent the coins back in april of 2013 so it's all good. I know I wrote it down somewhere in a notebook stored away in this giant messy house. I have complete faith that the notebook and pword will show up one day, so I'm not worried... too much.

Meantime I have an involuntary (possibly inaccessible) retirement fund sitting and waiting for me.

There will probably be many more copy and pastes in that thread.

As I've said before knowledge of this forum will be spreading like wildfire throughout the offices, streets and playgrounds of the Philippines and Indonesia because where else can you good earn money online from doing relatively nothing? I've seen people even say they've quit their office jobs to 'do bitcoin full-time'. A lot of them can't even believe it themselves at first because you often see them saying things like "when I was told about bitcoin I thought it was a scam and too good to be true" etc and you've quoted some of them yourself:

Most of us here have the same bitcoin story. I was also invited by my friend to try bitcoin. I have heard about bitcoin before but I was not a believer at all, I thought it is some kind of internet scam. Now as soon as my friend explained the basic about bitcoin I got hooked and I got more interested with bitcoin and the technology.

I first the word Bitcoin in the news that was year 2012 i think, and it was use to buy a box of pizza , late 2016 my friend want me to invest in Bitcoin but i ddint listen to him last 2017 he finally convinced me . At first i though it was just a scam or a fraud the reason why it took me a long time to made my mind.
Its better be late than never  Grin Grin Grin Grin .[/b]

This is mostly why I'm still in favour of people paying a substantial fee to have a signature. It will stop the majority of these users signing up with dozens-hundreds of alts just to say the same thing over and over again and this problem is only going to get exponentially worse especially as crapcoin campaigns are willing to pay for any old rubbish time after time.

Despite some thoughtful replies, I still feel everyone is missing the point.

Price is a very effective mechanism. Most people are saying "I won't pay", but they won't specify how much. We can do micro-transactions now, very effectively. We can pay the equivalent of a tiny fraction of 1 cent to make a post, like 0.0000001. Is that too much, if it cleans the forum up?

Why not tell us how much is too much, then we might start to get somewhere

I don't think most of us are missing the point; we're just saying that this won't work nor will theymos implement it any way. I know paying a price would be a very effective mechanism against people to minimise the spam and is why I've suggested people have to pay for signatures before because at least that doesn't effect people who just want to come here to talk about bitcoin or get a question asked, but let's say we go with your suggestion. At what price would it cost to make a post here? Fractions of a cent? A Cent? Fiddy cents? A dollar? Five dollars? Sure, if it was a fraction of a cent I'd likely pay it but so would many others including trolls and spammers. A cent, probably the same? Fifty cents? Maybe, maybe not. A very determined troll would also likely have no issue in paying a fee no matter what the amount. What then? The "bitcoin is a ponzi" NLC troll has been trolling this forum for years with literally thousands of bot accounts and he must have spent quite a bit of time, energy and money paying the evil fees over and over again but he still pops up every now and again (usually when the price tanks) to troll once again.

Maybe I've got too much of a bias to 2012 and 2011 when I started to read the forum: it was much better. This place was full of computer science types, sound money enthusiasts, math people, electronics people, old luminaries of the cypherpunk era, and totally anonymous people like today as well of course. I'm not saying everyone has to be some kind of polymath, but the conversations in the thread were usually motivated by earnest and genuine enquiry, people discussed all sorts of stuff. 2013 onwards, this forum just slowly filled up with sig spammers and trolls. Lots of the old crowd don't even come here anymore, the orgy cesspit of mindlessness that the Discussion board turned into pretty much killed the previous atmosphere. It seems like alot of people want to fight for keeping this place how it became after it went downhill, not for how high the quality here used to be.

A lot of us feel your frustrations about the decline in quality here and many of us including myself have put forward numerous suggestions to try curb spam, but trolls are a part of any forum these days and this one is just a huge victim of bitcoin's success. As long as bitcoin is worth something or has huge potential as an investment then people are going to flock here in droves to try earn it for free and I don't think paying a 0.0000001 fee every time they want to make a post here is going to change that. All it will do is put off innocent people who just wanted to come here to get a quick answer to a question whilst the ones that will benefit are the people who are prepared to pay it. If you're looking or hoping for the good old days where it was just satoshi and few cypherpunks having an intelligent discussion about a technology that could change the world then I'm afraid that time period has gone and probably isn't ever going to come back no matter how much it costs to post here.
3435  Other / Meta / Re: Please can we discourage Twitter references on the beginners board. on: April 21, 2018, 09:15:50 AM
I was saddened to see this post in one of the threads on the beginners' board.
Any recommendations on good people to follow on twitter?

I thought that the objective of Bitcoin Talk was to help people who are new to Bitcoin, and not to recommend other sites for learning and discussion. Has Bitcoin Talk immersed itself so far into the cesspit of bounty hunting, that people have to make posts like the above? I'm shocked by the number of advice posts on YouTube and Steemit that promote Bitcoin Talk as the venue to earn money by promoting scam coins and ponzi schemes.

I think you should try look at this objectively because I'm not sure why this is an issue or can't be asked here. Bitcointalk is probably the best place that you can get any sort of information on bitcoin and anything related to it so these questions are bound to be asked. Sure, people come here just to try earn some money or ask for other sources to do that, but many others also come here for valuable help directly related. What would you like us to do exactly? Block or trash any mention of twitter or any suggestions for other sites? I think there's bigger issues to worry about here.

3436  Other / Meta / Re: @Admins: Merit not working as configured, trolls just don't care (no surprise) on: April 20, 2018, 11:47:08 AM
The forum is wall-to-wall shitpositng but I don't think this is the solution. Simply banning the crapcoin campaigns that do nothing but pay for any old broken English spam would go a long way and is the bare minimum we should be doing but if we were to charge for anything it should be for a signature.
...

Hah, my suggestion to charge for sigs has taken hold subliminally!  Grin

Not quite. I've been suggesting we remove signatures from ranks for years.

Dedicated spammers/scammers will figure out a way to game any system

I don't think they'll be able to game paying a hefty fee for a signature, but any way of being able to achieving anything here naturally will be gamed/abused though.

such offenders be automatically temp-banned if, say, x different members mark any of offender's posts as "shitposts."

This would be abused. People would just report or bot people's posts they don't like.

3437  Other / Meta / Re: @Admins: Merit not working as configured, trolls just don't care (no surprise) on: April 20, 2018, 10:26:52 AM
I kinda agree with Carlton Banks.. I believe bitcointalk has reached a stage where everything has been answered... most of these posts by newbies are repeats.. Like how to export wallet key etc.. They keep on repeating the same stuff.. They need to learn how to use the search function.. Plus the general discussion section gets spammed with shit posts which are repetitive and are in broken English, which ruins the reading experience for other users.. Like if you believe you have something super important to add to the discussion which has been missed by other users then happily pay a 500 Satoshi fee... Also i kinda like the repayment idea.. Like if your reply gets merited you get back your 500 satoshi.. This can work and can do wonders for this community.. But on the other hand i believe the merit introduction has been working wonderfully.. So far the posts i have read have been less shitty.. So by giving it more time it will eventually give us the same result..

The forum is wall-to-wall shitpositng but I don't think this is the solution. Simply banning the crapcoin campaigns that do nothing but pay for any old broken English spam would go a long way and is the bare minimum we should be doing but if we were to charge for anything it should be for a signature. If you get money back for receiving merits it will just lead to even more abuse and the system is already heavily exploited by those giving merit to their alts and "friends" so this would just happen in even greater numbers when there's cash refunds on the line.

Why nobody can answer about selling ico accounts?

You already got an answer. Is it illegal to sell? If so, then no. I'm still not even sure what you're selling but if you're selling an account with somebody else's personal details or verifications then probably not.
3439  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League pool betting Discussion Thread on: April 20, 2018, 10:14:54 AM
Pretty poor round for everyone. Most people only got 10 or 20 points with unyil being the exception:

Another short round this week with only five games due to cancellations. No exciting match ups either.

So is the pot going to be split among the top 5 players or the winner will take all? Or perhaps it would go like this: winner gets 50%, runner-up gets 30% and 3rd place gets 20%?

Top five, but it will be distributed roughly like you mention. The exact figures are somewhere in this thread I believe.

Wenger is to step down at the end of the season:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/apr/20/arsene-wenger-to-leave-arsenal-at-the-end-of-the-season

Long overdue in my opinion.
3440  Other / Meta / Re: Challenge ! From newbie to Full Member. Let's see if merit system works on: April 19, 2018, 01:07:30 PM
Yawn, yet another thread moaning bout merit. I also have a challenge for you: How about you start writing more than one or two lines and actually put some effort into your posts and see how fast you get merit? People who make great, informative posts will likely have no trouble getting merit, but for those who are just churning out lazy, mediocre drivel just to get paid, then yeah, they probably won't get any merit unless they cheat the system.

3. Newbies have no chance to get merit (many quit)

Why would a Newbie quit because they didn't get merit? The only people who are going to quit are those that are here purely to earn and if they leave just because they can't contribute something worthwhile then they won't be missed.
