3461  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] Has the $3 Floor Been Solidified? on: December 01, 2011, 07:40:49 AM
He's just hoping for another dip, to turn around and sell into the rallies.
3462  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] - is bubble #2 starting? (yes/no) on: December 01, 2011, 06:45:54 AM
History doesn't repeat, but it often rhymes.  I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a mini rally.  Renewed hope and optimism for the price going up because the price is going up.  Why are more people buying?  Because it's going up.  It may have a nice run up to $4 or maybe even $5 before the more sober market participants begin to sell into the strength.  Remember that we've got at least two months of mining produce to be sold off to pay the bills (or sold when the price starts to turn).  These miners haven't been selling during that period as they would have been selling at a loss (assuming they didn't have 'free' or stolen power).

Enjoy the rising price, use it to make money, and don't stick around too long.  It's not fun being the bag holder when the music stops and all the other children have taken the available chairs.

Agreed.  Beware the traps.
3463  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What does the countdown ticker on Mt Gox signify? Anyone know what is happening on: November 29, 2011, 02:02:16 PM
Countdown to actually being able to withdraw our money.  Then they'll reset it at :01
3464  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bears take on the current price? Input need from Bears only on: November 29, 2011, 07:41:19 AM
I think it's an overcorrection, will trend back down soon, or will as soon as people start cashing out before it drops again.
3465  Economy / Speculation / Re: 70k bidwall at $2.65 on: November 29, 2011, 07:39:51 AM
Well at least I've got 100 bucks left.

And I am confident that I'll reach my old balance in another 2 weeks, I know what I was getting into in the future I'll listen not as much to the bears Smiley
I'll wait till the dust settles then lets see if this turns out to be market reversal.

Glad I ditched my short positions a week ago, it's been a profitable ride from 6.  Haven't been watching much this week, but I'll need to keep an eye on it this week and decide what I want to do.  I don't see a reversal coming, just a small rally with a stall, then a bunch of people cashing out before the price drops again.  It's an overcorrection.
3466  Economy / Speculation / Re: How an EURO melt down will affect bitcoins? on: November 27, 2011, 09:02:24 PM
No effect.  People aren't gonna turn to bitcoins after whats happened to it.
3467  Economy / Speculation / Re: What are mtgox counting down to? on: November 27, 2011, 09:01:44 PM
what gonna happen 1. dec? mtgox have some kind of countdown thing.
That's when they take the money and run.

That would be the ultimate scam.  Give people a countdown and if they still have money there they lose.

Imagine the  shitstorm.

The last time it happened (at least the off-line and frozen funds part of the equation), it was actually, and surpisingly, quite the snoozer.

I had been planning to try to clean up if/when Mt. Gox cashed out, but have given up on that and come to the conclusion that they are strong and among 'th good guys' which is where they stand in my book at this time.

Right that would be something bitcoin wouldn't recover from, at least in its current form.
But hey it's a Nagle post after all... maybe we should put him and cypherdoc in one room and see what happens, that would be equally entertaining  Grin

I had not seen that much from Nagle and certain of the other more vocal 'Bitcoin is finished' crowd.  I figured they finally went ahead and did their buy-ins near the $2.00 range which left just a few of their ilk empty handed and howling for the $1.xx which may never come.

I highly doubt that, more likely they got bored of bitcoin in general.
3468  Economy / Speculation / Re: Premonition - Bitcoin skyrockets above 30$ on: November 26, 2011, 02:53:00 PM
Well Mr Andresen himself predicted up to 5 more bubbles, so it's easily possible should Bitcoin be here to stay.

If/when a killer app pops up (and there is still a lot of potential) raising demand, it's almost certain it will attract lots of investors again.

Killer apps will come in waves of complexity. Each new adaptation will inspire further development of the technology. Bitcoin is in the prototyping phase. The current client is like the Intel 8080. "Nobody needs more than 640k."

If you are gonna use analogies, you should at least use one that is actually true.

Quote
Gates himself has strenuously denied making the comment. In a newspaper column that he wrote in the mid-1990s, Gates responded to a student's question about the quote: "I've said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough for all time." Later in the column, he added, "I keep bumping into that silly quotation attributed to me that says 640K of memory is enough. There's never a citation; the quotation just floats like a rumor, repeated again and again."

Gates, who is retiring from his day-to-day role at Microsoft Corp. on June 30, also insisted in a 2001 interview with U.S. News & World Report that he hadn't made the comment. "Do you realize the pain the industry went through while the IBM PC was limited to 640K? The machine was going to be 512K at one point, and we kept pushing it up," he told the magazine. "I never said that statement — I said the opposite of that."
3469  Economy / Speculation / Re: How low will BTC/$ drop over the Thanksgiving weekend? on: November 26, 2011, 02:49:58 PM
I doubt it will be what the polls indicated, it will not fall below $2, it is quite stable at +/-$2.50

What is your definition of stable?
3470  Economy / Speculation / Re: How low will BTC/$ drop over the Thanksgiving weekend? on: November 26, 2011, 11:21:36 AM
Short squeeze

Gonna have to go quite a bit higher than 25 cents for a short squeeze.

What price do you need to hit to get a short squeeze? I will shed a tear for you if it gets there.

I'm not short, haven't been since a week or two ago.  I'm out for the moment, market volatility is too high at 2, and margins aren't good enough for me without a substantial investment from outside my bitcoin funds.  I'm just watching for now.  My grandfather always taught me to quit while I'm ahead.

And to elaborate on the short squeeze for the person who asked, it's not just liquidating short positions, it's a situation where a large number of shorts are liquidated and cause the price to rise, because the people who were short have to buy back the coins when they get a margin call.
3471  Economy / Speculation / Re: How low will BTC/$ drop over the Thanksgiving weekend? on: November 25, 2011, 03:32:01 PM
It won't, it's too predictable and people will be watching for it.  The lower the price gets, the slower the downtrend will get.  It may take another couple weeks, or even a month.
3472  Economy / Speculation / Re: How low will BTC/$ drop over the Thanksgiving weekend? on: November 25, 2011, 01:55:45 PM
it will

Nuh uh!
3473  Economy / Speculation / Re: How low will BTC/$ drop over the Thanksgiving weekend? on: November 25, 2011, 01:10:25 PM
Short squeeze

Gonna have to go quite a bit higher than 25 cents for a short squeeze.
3474  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why people insist on selling bitcoins on TradeHill? on: November 24, 2011, 02:13:34 PM
MtGox has it's issues, not the place for that discussion though.
3475  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who else thinks Bitcoin is going to $1000 by Jan 1? on: November 24, 2011, 02:11:16 PM

Bears representing.  Quoting this on the second.
3476  Economy / Speculation / Re: "Aaaaaaand the waaaallllls... on: November 24, 2011, 02:08:19 PM
If there was more activity I would be more optimistic.  I expected more of a spike, but it isn't happening and people are gonna get nervous soon.  I'm also expecting a lot of those walls to drop when the price gets closer, in anticipation of new lows and lower buy ins.
3477  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the point? on: November 24, 2011, 02:03:16 PM
Agreed.  A barter system works, but currency will always evolve to facilitate transactions, and thats what bitcoin is doing.  It may never become a worldwide standard like people say, but it will still serve a niche market and that's cool.

No he was just resting his eyes.  Unremorsefully.
3479  Economy / Services / Re: Introducing the Bitcoin100 on: November 22, 2011, 04:01:31 PM
I pledge 1 BTC per organization, until further notice.

But if I'm allowed to be a bit of a spoilsport, I think we need to be realistic with respect to the success prospects of this initiative. 100 BTC is not a lot for the organizations that matter, and Bitcoin comes with legal and publicity baggage that they will be mindful of. If they need any convincing at all to accept bitcoins, a mere 100 BTC will not be what convinces them.

It's even worse if the funds aren't collected in advance. When the time comes to pay up you don't know who will have forgotten about the whole thing, who doesn't get the memo, who has run out of coins and who simply refuses to honor their pledge. And the organization will be less eager to go along if they're not assured the money is all accounted for.

Maybe we can learn a few things from the DOSBox pledge which was sort of similar but on a much smaller scale. That was essentially a one-man crew with a hobby project and without any real legal obligation, and the persuasion process was far from "100 BTC you say? Of course I'll accept bitcoins now!".

I do remember that Roger did this same thing with 1000 dollars of his own money, ready to be paid.   And that wikileaks cited "potential" issues with the Charities Commission.
3480  Economy / Services / Re: Introducing the Bitcoin100 on: November 22, 2011, 03:59:55 PM
Not sure how I am making it sound worse than it is, when it's pretty bad to begin with.  I think peoples eagerness to get bitcoin wider acceptance is clouding their judgement.

BadBear do you enjoy trolling?

I can't speak for others but for me it is more like I (others) have a limited amount of money to donate.  Some charities accept BTC, some don't.  If you accept BTC you have greater chance of getting funds from me.

Nothing different than a charity accepting CC.  I don't write checks, and I don't like to give cash (no IRS record) so if a charity doesn't accept credit cards I am going to donate to a charity that does.   10 years ago that was more of an issue but today virtually every charity accepts credit cards.  Maybe in 10 years almost every charity will accept Bitcoins.

If that is evil well I guess I am evil.

Sorry, having a different opinion than you doesn't qualify me as a troll, but you did at least respond with something so I'll give you that.

I have nothing against charities accepting bitcoins, it would be nice, I don't want anyone else knowing what charities I donate to so it's very convenient.  What I have a problem with is this specific presentation.  I certainly wouldn't stand in front of the salvation army guys and say I've got money here but only if you use "this" currency.

And I never said you or anyone else was evil, I try not to judge people (not that I'm innocent).
