3521  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What do you think about trust wallet? on: November 18, 2022, 09:54:33 AM
but as long as there is an open source wallet option, why not try https://unstoppable.money/ ?
The Unstoppable Wallet is being recommended quite often in recent times as a good and open-source multi-coin client. But the truth is, I have never heard anyone say they use it or that they have used it extensively for a longer period of time. I would love to see some feedback by those people. It's always just a recommendation, where Unstoppable Wallet gets proposed to someone, and that's it. I will try to install it later on on my phone just to see how it works.
3522  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: Novosti on: November 18, 2022, 09:39:35 AM
Uvijek sam mislio da je ledger spor uređaj ali izgleda da je sve zbog usrane aplikacije. Ono kliknem send i imam progress bar dok on radi transakciju i treba mu bar pol minute.

3523  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: New software wallet: SecureBTCWallet.com (feedback appreciated) on: November 18, 2022, 09:25:36 AM
It surprises me you were even able to code this while not having any understanding of wallet types.
Who knows who did the coding. It might even be based on a codebase of a perfectly fine and open-source project that was just modified and became closed-source after that. None of the claims made in the OP can be independently verified or confirmed. And because they are brand-new, no one is going to take their word for it.
3524  Economy / Gambling / Re: How To Access gambling site without VPN on: November 18, 2022, 09:13:49 AM
As long as the websites you are trying to access have not restricted users from your country, it's ok to use that method. You aren't tricking or lying to the site, you are doing it to your government and bypassing their restrictions. But be aware of the following point: some crypto casinos have a rule that states that players who reside in territories that have banned online or crypto gambling aren't allowed to use their platforms. If your country has banned its citizens from accessing Sportsbet.io, that rule would apply to you if Sportsbet.io mentions something like that in their TOS. Check it with the casino support just to be on the safe side.
3525  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: Novosti on: November 18, 2022, 08:11:22 AM
S neopisivim guštom sam uninstalirao Ledger Live i nadam se da ga više nikada neću vidjeti.
Ledger Live će ti i dalje trebati kad budeš radio nadogradnju firmware-a i ažurirao BTC i druge kripto aplikacije na svom Nano novčaniku. To nažalost mora ići preko Ledger Live aplikacije.

3527  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Devices 'Passport Batch 2' hardware wallet review on: November 17, 2022, 09:25:24 AM
Excellent review. I loved reading it!

Too bad there is only one paper card for the seed and backup codes. The competition includes 2 or 3. The microSD backup doesn't back up the seed as well, does it?
The change of batteries to rechargeable ones with over 4 hours of stand-by life is a welcome edition.

I have some questions.
You mentioned that Batch 2 uses a screen with a closed-source driver chip. What's the worst case scenario there?
Doesn't Batch 2 have any type of seed verification after the initial onboarding process?
3528  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ Football Transfers Speculation, Odds and Predictions on: November 17, 2022, 08:41:26 AM
We know Mount is a Chelsea prodigy and loves playing for Chelsea but greed this days has cause many young footballers to move from clubs they love to those that can afford them.
These rich and spoiled kids nowadays have no sense of belonging. It's one of the reasons why I am disgusted by today's football and why I am happy I grew up in better times when it was all about representing and being available for the club you love. Players will always move between clubs and it's a normal thing. But in the past, the priority was winning trophies and playing for your national team. Now it's all about getting the best possible contract, no matter if it's in England, Qatar, China, or Spain. Just show me the money and I am yours. Full-scale prostitution.
3529  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What wallet should i choose are my steps correct? on: November 17, 2022, 08:16:59 AM
Answer :

What i meant is that if we have 24 words private key (seed) it has to read up it from somewhere to give access to our BTC seed ETH seed etc. and the question is where do it get it from?
Like I mentioned previously, the generation of the seed and private keys takes place on your device and your computer. The secure element is like a prison for sensitive information. A prison that private keys can't escape from. When a transaction requires signing, the correct private key is used and nothing is leaked from the device.
3530  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is possible to create e-bitcoin for toll road payment?. on: November 17, 2022, 08:04:15 AM
So, when using the main blockchain, it's not automatically fast like what we paid it with fiat.
People wrongly assume that Bitcoin is slow but traditional bank and credit card payments are fast. That's not really the case. When you pay a merchant with a credit/debit card, the person receives quick confirmation about the payment and the balance increases. But in the background, that transaction takes up to 2-3 days to finalize. Only after it's finalized does the merchant get access to their money.

Compare that with Bitcoin. If you send me a bitcoin payment, my wallet will immediately show the incoming and yet unconfirmed transaction. It's not yet final, and the industry standard is 6 confirmations for a bitcoin transaction to be considered final and irreversible. We know that a new block gets mined once every 10 minutes on average. Therefore, 6 block confirmations are required for transaction finality. So 1 block every 10 minutes means you need to wait 1 hour on average. Depending on how fast blocks are found and how fast your first confirmation arrives, this can take a few more hours. But if everything is OK, a merchant that's paid in bitcoin has access to their coins after the 1st blockchain confirmation (after 10 mins on average).

When you put traditional banks that need 2-3 days to finalize a transaction against bitcoin that requires 1, 2, or 3 hours, for example, it's easy to see which one is faster. The second element of the story is the irreversibility and possibility for chargebacks. A credit card transaction can be reversed for up to 180 days after it was made even if it's considered final. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is practically impossible to reverse after several confirmations. The costs would be tens of millions of dollars.

is there any solution without using a 2nd layer like LN?, I mean still use in the main bitcoin blockchain.
When using the 1st-layer blockchain, you have to take into consideration the scalability limitations that come with it. It doesn't get faster than that. We are experiencing quite some congestion right now because mempools are showing 30.000 unconfirmed transactions waiting to get mined.
3531  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 35% off Keystone Hardware Wallets Code on: November 16, 2022, 05:14:53 PM
This is the biggest discount so far among the hardware wallet brands. Their web shop seems quite slow at the moment. Maybe it's getting more attention than usual because people are taking advantage of discounted prices.

It seems the prices will be further decreased. When you open the main page, you are welcomed with a huge banner that says there will be a 40% discount starting from tomorrow. It takes you to their Twitter feed and from there you need to join their Discord server to get more info.
3532  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nokia Hardware Wallet? on: November 16, 2022, 05:03:02 PM
Then you don't have to depend on HW manufacturers and there is more freedom.
You are still depending on something. In this particular example, you are not depending on a hardware wallet manufacturer like before, but you are depending on the developers of the Nokia phones and all their software and hardware components + the creator of this experimental new project. He himself suggests using it just for testing purposes and something to play around with, but to leave your hard-earned money on proper hardware devices that were created for those purpose.
3533  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 15% discount on Trezor hardware wallets on: November 16, 2022, 04:55:01 PM
Indeed, FTX exchange incident will prompt many users to change their crypto storage strategy  and move their assets to devices.
I was checking Ledger's Twitter feed a few hours ago to see if they announced anything for Black Friday (nothing yet), and I came across a tweet where they said they have already recorded a 7x increase in sales in the days following the FTX drama. They are also claiming their support is overwhelmed with inquiries about hardware wallets and stuff like that. They seem to be suggesting that some of the server issues that dkbit98 was talking about in Ledger Server Problems could be a result of the unexpected increase of new users all coming in at the same time. If that's the case, maybe it's time to consider greater server capacity.
3534  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 15% discount on Trezor hardware wallets on: November 16, 2022, 09:52:35 AM
Even if you didn't own the Model One?
If we got a promo price of around €170-€200 for the upcoming Black Friday event (I doubt we will), I would consider getting a Trezor Model T. With a good passphrase and a secret code stored on a SD card, we can mitigate the hardware vulnerability of the device and make it secure enough. Together with Ledger, Trezor is the oldest and most popular brand. I have more trust in them than in the newer manufacturers on the block. The Foundation Passport is appealing to me personally if it wasn't for its young age.
3535  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What wallet should i choose are my steps correct? on: November 16, 2022, 09:25:01 AM
1.Bitcoin holding - Download bitcore  from bitcoin.org - download whole blockchain make 3 keys backups(on 3 diffrent pendrives) and sync it once every 2 months.
2.Cardano Holding - Download DAEDALUS WALLET from cardano.org and rest like ^
3.BNB and BUSD - Holding it on Binance (Its centralised chain soo anyway it dosent really change anything)
4.Ethereum - create wallet on my ether wallet and make 3 backups on pendrives.(I wanted to download mist wallet but it dosent seems to working anymore)

(every wallet be offline all the time Only windows + wallet will be installed on the SSD each Wallet has separate PC).
Storing seeds and private keys digitally is not recommended. You should write it down on paper and store it in 3 separate geographical locations if possible. It's much easier to make backups of seeds than it is of private keys. Maybe it's worth considering using Electrum for your Bitcoin because with that app, you get a 12-word seed to back up. That's unless you are insisting on having a full-node client. If you have to use USB drives for sensitive data (again, not recommended), at least encrypt and/or password-protect the files.

Your wallets are not offline if your computers are connected to the internet and you use them to sync and download the latest blocks. Did I understand correctly that you are planning to use 4 different PCs for each of your wallet or are we talking about 4 SSDs on the same computer? And will those computers be used for any other activities besides holding your software wallets and syncing with the blockchain? Are they clean with freshly installed OSs or have you use them in the past for other stuff?

1.We are generating Seedphrase to Ledger not for Bitcoin, ethereum, bnb etc for example (Dosent that mean they have to store our btc/eth seeds somehow?)
Seeds and private keys remain on the device all all times. Ledger uses secure element chips in their hardware wallets, and sensitive data doesn't leave those chips. The seed is only shown to you once during the setup process. Once that is done and you have made a backup of it, you can't see it ever again. You can't see the seed in the native Ledger Live app.

2.What if they went bankrupt and software will be abadoned dosent that mean we wont have access to our funds?
No. Wallets that generate BIP-39 compatible seeds (like Ledger in this case) can be recovered in other software or hardware wallets. If your device breaks, Ledger ceases to exist as a company, or your computer where the software/hardware is used malfunctions, you have your seed backups to rely on. The Ledger is just a hardware device that keeps your private keys in the secure element and signs transactions for you.

3.Lets says i have keylogger or anything related to it on my Phone (And connect nano x with bluetooth) and i would like to send from ledger to exchange some BTCs dosent that mean "Virus" will be able to swap my sending address or generate new transaction to the hackers address?
Keyloggers don't swap addresses. They record and log your activities, like the things you write on your keyboard, they can take screenshots of what is on your screen, etc. This data gets stolen and sent to a malicious party. But like I mentioned above, your recovery phrase is never visible in a software environment, it never leaves the safety of the device, which means there is nothing for the keylogger to log. You also can't view or copy your private keys because they are also always on the secure element. So again, the keylogger has nothing to steal.

Clipboard malware is a different threat though. In theory, they can swap your legit address for one that belongs to a hacker. But that happens on a software level. When you make a transaction with a hardware wallet, all the information has to be checked and verified on the screen of that hardware device. Your malware can infect your computer, but I have never heard of a clipboard malware that can infect and modify the transaction details that are shown on the screen of your hardware wallet. Always confirm that the information is identical to what the Ledger shows. If you need to send a transaction to someone and you receive an address to pay to, a clipboard malware can replace that address when you copy it. When it's pasted into a software it can be a different address. It's your job to check that the pasted address (that will receive the coins) as well as the amounts and fees match with the one the other party gave you. If they don't, don't make the transaction. A hardware wallet can't protect you in this particular situation. If the other party makes a similar mistake and sends you the wrong BTC address, it's their fault.

4.And how can i verify thats while Ledger nano X During production didnt get any thing "additional"(by it workers not the company while compiling Ledger)
When we are talking about Ledger hardware wallets, you can't. The before-mentioned secure element chip is not open-source, which makes the firmware not open-source and the whole product closed-source.
3536  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: New software wallet: SecureBTCWallet.com (feedback appreciated) on: November 16, 2022, 08:23:09 AM
We know Trezor and Ledger are safer options and we recommend people to use them. But this one is free and I think it's best if one diversifies their crypto holding on multiple wallets, so if one gets hacked, you have the other ones available.
Many other reputable and recommended software wallets are also free (for desktop or mobile), so that's not really an argument.

As a best practice, the users would have to choose a cold-wallet such as a hardware wallet that they would need to pay for, or use a desktop based software like SecureBTCWallet. While software cold-wallets are available on both mobile and desktop, mobile wallets are known to be prone to misuse, because they're too accessible. Thus, the desktop is the only viable option if the user is not willing to pay for a hardware wallet.
You don't need a hardware wallet or the SecureBTCWallet at all. Paper wallets exist for truly cold solutions, Airgapped systems can be set up for those that want it, Electrum can be used as either a hot or cold client, or a Live OS can be used over DVD or USB.

Exchanges are good for buying & selling Bitcoins conveniently. You may also use them to keep some small quantity of Bitcoins readily available for purchasing goods, withdrawing or sending.
There is no benefit in using exchanges in order to purchase goods or sending crypto to another person when you can do all of that from your own private wallet. And you don't need to worry that your coins could be frozen, you could be asked for KYC or source of funds, or be treated like a criminal because your bitcoin has been "tainted" due to its history with gambling platforms or services that particular exchange doesn't like. Some CEXs like Binance provide P2P trading, which is free. That's a plus, but considering how cheap it is to transact with bitcoin, it's not worth risking your coins and having Binance hold on to them.

  • Keep 0.5 BTC in Coinbase
  • Keep 0.5 BTC in Binance
  • Keep 1 BTC in a Trezor wallet
  • Keep 1 BTC in a Ledger wallet
  • Keep 0.5 BTC in an Electrum wallet
  • Keep 0.5 BTC in a SecureBTCWallet
First you speak out against keeping coins on exchanges and then you suggest holding 1/4 of your bitcoin on centralized exchanges. It can't be both. Unless you are a day-trader who is aware of the risks of using CEXs, no one else should be storing their coins there and using an exchange as a wallet. They are not wallets. They are places you go to if you want to purchase or sell digital assets.

In my opinion, you need to check that the build is reproducible and that the code is good. Then, by transitivity, you know that the code running on the wallet is also good.
The problem is, one does not imply the other. A wallet and its code being reproducible doesn't make the code good, not vulnerable, or maliciously modified. While most people can check the reproducibility element or rely on sources like WalletScrutiny, there are very few of those among average users who have the skills to investigate the code and understand what does what.

Sorry, but this is just a bunch of assumptions you wrote here.
Exactly. But the research by the BitBox folks is also based on theoretical assumptions and hasn't been proven in practice.

When there is a possibility there is always a chance someone is going to use this attack in future (if they are not using it already).
True, there is. But if someone is using it and dumping secret data, the BitBox devs can point that out on the public blockchain where it can in their own theory be found.
3538  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Server Problems on: November 16, 2022, 07:29:09 AM
I believe Ledger servers is also part of their products, you can't use ledger live app without ledger servers...
That's not what you said previously. In your reply to NeuroticFish you said that you can't use your Ledger with Electrum if Ledger servers aren't working. That's false.

Any issue related with severs can affect devices not being able to turn on.
Wrong again. You can connect your Ledger hardware wallet to any computer via your USB cable. That computer does not need to have Ledger Live installed and hence there are no severs to connect to. If the device is working, it will ask you to enter your PIN in order to unlock it. This action does not require Ledger Live or a connection to Ledger servers.
3539  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 3 questions about wallets and DEXs on: November 15, 2022, 07:04:35 PM
I had some free time this afternoon and remembered this topic. I decided to take a look at AtomicDEX and what's new at Bisq. OP never came back to tell us if he used any of the recommended software and what he thought about them.

Anyways, if you are reading this, you should know that AtomicDEX doesn't support USDT over the Tron Network. It supports the Ethereum, Solana, and bunch of others I have never heard of, but not the TRC20 variant. Since one of the questions was about Tron wallets, I assume that's the only one he was interested in.

Bisq doesn't have the TRC20 version of USDT among its supported altcoins either. I was actually very surprised when I couldn't find it on the list. Just like AtomicDEX , they also support the ERC20 version. Some other altcoins like BUSD or DAI are also available, but not the one you asked about. And the altcoin markets look really bad with very little liquidity. That doesn't mean there aren't takers who are looking for a good trade, but at first sight there isn't much on offer.

I didn't try out Robosats or AgoraDesk, but something tells me you won't get lucky there either.

This attack vector might sound plausible in theory--and it might actually turn out to be a successful one for hackers--but as of right now I haven't seen any reports of hardware wallets being hacked....at all.  Have any of you?  And I mean by any method, not just this one.
All hacks that have happened have required physical access to the device, a set of specialized hardware and tools, knowledge about what you are doing, outdated software, and luck. Joe Grand's hacking of the Trezor one fulfils all those criteria. I have never heard of a remote attack on a hardware wallet.
