You'd be crazy to buy on Gox's 10-20% premium
The only reason to buy on Gox would be if the volume of BTC you want to buy simply isn't available on any other exchange.

My guess is that about 1 million are permanently lost.
3524  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: The Law, in relation to Bitcoin. Absolute LAW, the way it works, & affects YOU on: August 21, 2013, 07:10:24 AM
Law is an opinion with a gun behind it, nothing more.

There's nothing about the people who declare their opinions to be law that makes those opinions any more or less valid than the opinions of a random street bum.

The only reason anyone listens to the law is because they are afraid of the gun.

Ah, at the J_R Exchange. Nice spreads! 119.- / 79.-
If the market will bear it, why not?
3526  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Proposal: usage and termonology of a BIP32 wallet on: August 20, 2013, 07:01:14 PM
I agree in general that it's a good idea to make the Bitcoin client operate (by default) in a simple way that influences users to conform with security guidelines and match the vast majority of common use cases.
However, we should consider whether what you suggested indeed covers all the common use cases. One particular point that we should keep in mind is that BIP32 is a standard for creating pubkeys rather than Bitcoin scripts/addresses. So for example if the user wishes to enhance his security by using a P2SH address that can be redeemed via one privkey that resides on his smartphone and one privkey that resides on his laptop, then he will need to give the sender a pair of account numbers (one that belongs to his smartphone's BIP32 wallet and one that belongs to his laptop's BIP32 wallet), and each time that the sender wishes to send a payment he will construct a script from two fresh pubkeys and thereby derive the P2SH address to send the coins to?
I don't really understand P2SH. I thought that all the user would need to provide to the sender is a hash.
3527  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: August 20, 2013, 06:57:20 PM
The localbitcoins user kagomeluvsu2 tried to scam me and wasted a bunch of my time.  He wanted me to send him a screenshot of our transaction "for security reasons".  Playing along I sent him the screen shot.  Then he had the balls to ask me to "click on the show button" and resend the picture.

His phone numbers are 281-891-3127, 913-200-1331 and 913-210-0571 in case anyone is interested.
If you block that user, add negative feedback describing the scam, and then report the buyer as fraudulent through the support and contact form it will minimize the risk that someone gets scammed.
3528  Economy / Exchanges / Re: MtGox withdrawal delays [Gathering] on: August 20, 2013, 07:41:41 AM
First of all it is quite easy to sell at MtGox prices elsewhere.  I've always done that to avoid withdrawal fees.  There is no need to sell at a loss.

Could you give me an example?
Buyers in LocalBitcoins are willing to pay Mt Gox spot or sometimes even higher for bitcoins.
3529  Economy / Speculation / Re: Milestones on: August 20, 2013, 04:21:45 AM
I was thinking about this thread recently. Thanks for the bump!
Things were boring for a while so I got out of the habit of updating.

Also, you're freaking me out with that low post count.
3530  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Are off-chain transactions necessary to keep Bitcoin unbroken? on: August 19, 2013, 10:24:50 PM
Yet more evidence that Satoshi comes from the future and the 1MB hard limit might actually be an optimal number
So why did he start it out at 16 MB?
3531  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: CampBX - How safe is it? Any troubled past? on: August 19, 2013, 10:18:31 PM
There support is horrible just fyi.
I had problems there before related to a dwolla deposit

Can verify that support is horrible/non-existent. I did a dwolla deposit to start my 30 day countdown, but now it says that I have to wait 90 days to transfer my BTC elsewhere. This apparently also applies to BTC transferred in, as I only bought 0.011 BTC from CampBX with my Dwolla deposit, but transferred in 5 BTC to sell. and now can't transfer any of them out (I'm not getting the price I want on CampBX). Details on the story here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=265702

Edit: I recommend Coinbase. You can pay and withdrawal by directly linking a bank account, which is better than Dwolla. Once you're at Tier II you can purchase instantly from an ACH bank transfer, and even at tier I you get to lock in the price, just don't get your coins for four days. If you find this info helpful, here's my ref link, we'll each get 0.01 BTC on your first purchase: https://coinbase.com/?r=51dc61a4c6d4c7bcbc000019
Don't expect more responsive support from Coinbase...
3532  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is Coinbase really that much cheaper than Mtgox? on: August 19, 2013, 10:15:13 PM
I saw the price on Coinbase at $118, then refreshed the page and it went back to $102.
3533  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Android key rotation on: August 19, 2013, 10:07:04 PM

3534  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: August 19, 2013, 09:17:49 PM
If they'll bring the cash and meet face-to-face, why not?

Sure, I wasted an hour of my time, but I've had many successful transactions in excess of 20 bitcoins with individuals that were making their first ever purchase through localbitcoins and had no history.

I don't see how it's any different than selling my used car for $6000 to someone who sees my ad in a paper or calls the phone number from the window of my car.  Such an individual wouldn't have any "trade history" either.  I'm not sure I understand your surprise?
I guess it depends on your personal safety preferences.

I don't want to exchange more than $1000 in cash with someone I've never met before. Higher limits are reserved for people on my Trusted list.
3535  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: August 19, 2013, 09:01:56 PM
Why would you try to sell 55 BTC to someone with no trade history?
3536  Economy / Exchanges / Re: MtGox withdrawal delays [Gathering] on: August 19, 2013, 08:34:35 PM
Pretty sure some people or group are successfully arbing (maybe japan locals?), we keep seeing massive great BTC sell walls @ BTC-e to keep price down.   Wouldn't be in this groups interest to spoil the large spread.
I don't think you understand how arbitrage works.
3537  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Proposal: usage and termonology of a BIP32 wallet on: August 19, 2013, 05:44:33 PM
re: http://bitcoinism.blogspot.com/2013/07/reclaiming-financial-privacy-with-hd.html

Depth=1 nodes are called accounts. The GUI is focused around displaying accounts. The textual representation of an account's extended public key is called an "account number"

Account 0 is reserved for internal use, to create change addresses and individual use addresses. Requesting a single address from the client should be considered deprecated and require multiple clicks to reach in the GUI.

When a user wants to receive bitcoins, they are encouraged to make a unique account number for each entity that will send them money. They should also be told not to share the account number with anyone other than the intended sender.

A "Receive Bitcoins" function should enquire whether to receive to a new account or an existing account, and should ultimately return an account number (not an address). If the user creates a new account, she should be asked for the name of the sender who will be depositing bitcoins to that account (for address book purposes).

Accounts can be disabled, which means the client no longer scans them for incoming transactions, but can always be enabled in the future.

Services which send bitcoins to users should start asking for account numbers instead of addresses. Services which accept bitcoins from users should create a different Bitcoin account for each registered user and provide them with the account number.

Clients should save account numbers with their associated address book entry, keep track of the most recently used address in that account, and automatically use the next address in the sequence when a user requests to send a payment.

Privacy conscious users should be able to tell their client to use multiple transactions when necessary to avoid associating inputs from different addresses as described in the link above.

Any two entities which want to exchange bitcoins between themselves should only need to exchange account numbers once. From that point on, each one has the information needed to generate every destination address that they will ever require.

As a user, I install a new Bitcoin client and create a wallet. I create account numbers for Mt Gox, Coinbase, LocalBitcoins, my mining pool, etc. I then log in to the website for all those services and update my profiles with their respective account numbers. I also save the account number each one of those services gives me in my client so that I can just "Send 1 BTC to Mt Gox" from the client and the funds will automatically arrive at the correct address.

Calling extended public keys "account numbers" will map well to what users are already familiar with in terms of banking. Recipients can easily track payments from specific customers without requiring address reuse and its associated harm to financial privacy.

Litecoin looks more and more doomed.
How can it be doomed? What about all the technical innovations that Litecoin brings? All of the transactions Litecoin can do that Bitcoin can't, the use cases where Bitcoin just isn't ready yet but Litecoin is? The superior software and support infrastructure compared to Bitcoin?

What did you say? Litecoin doesn't have any of those things?

Carry on then.
