I think the somewhat negative CCTV coverage is having an effect in China.

what happened? The Chinese dear leaders sold a bunch?
No, if they wanted to sell they'd tell the masses to buy.

If they are warning the masses away it's because the leaders want to buy before the prices goes higher.
2662  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Peter Schiff - Who would you like to see debate him? on: November 25, 2013, 07:25:24 AM
Stefan Molyneux or Jeffery Tucker.
2663  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Does revealing one private key compromise an entire deterministic wallet? on: November 25, 2013, 05:41:35 AM
If it is using the 'type-2' public derivation, e.g. as is the case for all keys in a current armory wallet (IIRC), and the attacker knows the extended public key (e.g. attacker has a watching wallet) then yes.

This is why in BIP32 the recommended top level uses the 'type-1' private derivation which doesn't have this surprising property (but also lacks the nifty ability for a untrusted party to generate addresses for the wallet).
That's why I think implementations should add an extra level of structure such that you create a different xpub for every entity from whom you receive funds.

I know, quadratic scaling, but it's worth it for the added safety.
2664  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-11-23 OnBitcoin - Newegg Hints at Accepting Bitcoin on: November 25, 2013, 12:57:28 AM
This would make me very happy.. as a long time newegg customer.  It would surely hurt Bitcoinstore.com sales... but that's competition..
According to statements made earlier in the year, bitcoinstore.com was never intended to be permanent.

If Newegg starts accepting bitcoin, he'll probably shut down.

we are also dumping massive amounts of fertilizers and organic waste into our oceans.  This encourages algae blooms that  absorb dissolved oxygen and create more CO2.
And a not-insignificant fraction of that comes from overproduction of corn caused by ethanol subsidies.

Subsidies that were sold to the public under the guise of helping to solve the very problems which they cause.

Neat trick - convince the public that you need more money in order to solve a problem that's caused them giving you money and you can be set for life.
2667  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: An Electronic Currency That Could Save The Economy - And It's Not Bitcoin on: November 24, 2013, 07:33:38 PM
This economy does not deserve to be saved.

It's a centrally-planned murder machine designed to enrich Manhattan and DC while bribing the Baby Boomers with the auctioned-off livelihoods of their grandchildren.
2668  Economy / Economics / Re: Is 5 BTC enough to save for 2 or 3 years? on: November 24, 2013, 05:58:43 PM
Not everyone want Bitcoin, some want litecoin, primecoin etc....
Sure, just like how in 2013 I'm sure there are a couple of dial up BBSs hanging on somewhere.

What if consumer electronics manufacturers in SE Asia are quietly telling their import partners they want bitcoins instead of dollars?

Isn't she going to look stupid in a couple years?
I need to update the Journalist Honor Roll thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=326656.0

This is a great illustration of how well an exponential trend line can predict the past.
That's not an exponential trendline.
2673  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 24, 2013, 04:31:38 AM
The exponential trend line is a myth. Media awareness may grow at an exponential rate at first, but there is a "hype" effect that will cause it to eventually depart the exponential trajectory.

I believe we are seeing that now: all time Google Trends high, it is showing up regularly on network news, etc. It's not reasonable to assume that we can go from occasional web journalism to news networks without departing the trend.

Also, the amount invested by every individual joining the ecosystem will grow over time, since there's an intangible measure of "trustworthiness" Bitcoin gains by surviving each successive bubble.

Trend lines are fantastic predictors of the past, but their predictive power for the future is not so simple; you are drawing this trend, then assuming that the trend is created by some fundamental mechanism of growth. Unless you are correct in the assumption of some fundamental mechanism which will continue into the future, the trend will fail to accurately predict.

So really, without thinking about what the mechanisms of growth really are, it's just a blind guess.
2674  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 24, 2013, 04:04:54 AM
But it can't use the bitcoind wallet trough RPC?
Not yet.

Right now it needs direct access to the downloaded blockchain files. Being able to connect to a remote bitcoind is a feature that he'll add "soon".
2675  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 24, 2013, 03:39:55 AM
Walsoraj, you were predicting a crash to single digits when we were at 150USD....its hardly prophetic to keep predicting a fall when there are only three directions a market can go in.
All hail Walsoraj, master of the stopped clock prophesy!
2676  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 24, 2013, 03:10:43 AM
Does it support the wallet.dat from the original client?
Does it support the block database from the original client (I do not want to wait another two weeks for the new client to download the blockchain).
Does not directly support wallet.dat, but if you've only got a couple addresses it's easy to import them.

Armory relies on either bitcoind or Bitcoin-Qt to connect to the network and download the blockchain for it, so you can just install Armory alongside your existing Bitcoin-Qt installation and it will just use that.

Even better you can set up bitcoind to constantly run in the background as a service and just use Armory when you need to make a transaction.
2677  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: hahahahahaha Did you guys see this yet. on: November 24, 2013, 02:54:12 AM
Back in 2010/2011 I heard theories floating around that DPR and Satoshi were the same person.
2678  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 24, 2013, 02:28:30 AM
I want to reuse the addresses. A lot. Actually, I do not want to generate new addresses at all if possible. This way the backup of my wallet does not need updating.
Thank Satoshi for bad planning when it came to wallets, and switch to Armory instead.
2679  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: RAM-Reduction & Backup Center Testing (version 0.89.99.16) on: November 23, 2013, 05:54:03 PM
If you've got enough Bitcoins to need Armory, then 28 GB of hard drive space shouldn't be an issue...

"Lawless" behaviour looks like Jason King using bitcoin donations to illegally feed the homeless in Florida.
