Bitcointalk no longer at 109.201.133.195 bitcointalk.org ?

I had this

Code:
109.201.133.195 bitcointalk.org

in my hosts file on my pc, it would not connect. Theymos always said use your hosts to connect so if the forum gets taken, it will not connect unless it was from the ip 109.201.133.195.

I removed it and now I can connect to bitcointalk.

If I launch the command :

Code:
ping bitcointalk.org

it gives me :

root@redsn0w:~# ping bitcointalk.org

Oh ok, cloudfare is a good option and I don't understand why this forum doesn't use it.
It's ok. But, you have to rely on a third party which is the dealbreaker in my opinion.

Cloudfare? I don't think we need that service for this forum tbh. It's just that the forum software is a little bit outdated but can still stand some security threats. The last time I remember that we experienced similar issue was dated January. Hope this attack doesn't persist and the forum may once again be stable.
Well, even with new forum software it won't really improve protection against DDOS attacks. More/better hardware will, there's certain things you can do, but theymos has pretty much already covered most of the little things you can do to prevent DDOS attack. There's been plenty of discussion on this previously where theymos has asked for advice on protection from DDOS. I can't seem to find the thread yet.

I think theymos can "accept" a sort of compromise to improve the "security" of this forum, or maybe he is waiting to the new forum software and after he will use cloudflare.
3543  Other / Meta / Re: What is happened to the forum? on: April 02, 2015, 12:35:09 PM
DDOS. Probably expect this to continue throughout today, possibly tomorrow. A lot of people are suggesting cloudfare, hopefully we won't have to resort to using it.

As the title said : What is happened to the forum?
3545  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 02, 2015, 11:28:39 AM
cant find if this question is already asked, but if i put my avatar on, is there any chance that i could still change it or it will be permanent to my account?

I think you and all the other users will be able to change again the forum avatar but I don't know when the "april fool aka prank" will stop.
3546  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 01, 2015, 10:56:11 PM
It is now once again possible to upload an avatar to the forum. You must be a full member or above to upload an avatar. Go to this page (also linked in your "Forum Profile Information" settings):
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=avatar

You can only upload new avatars: you can't choose one from the server or use a link as you could before. (If you are currently using one of these types of avatars, the upload avatar page will say that you don't have an avatar.) Also, uploaded avatars are not resized: they are simply rejected if they are too large.

I like how its when I was checking my PM's and see a weird looking pineapple that I realize this function is BACK!
About TIME You Fool XD (Apr 1 I see what you did there)
I mean out of habit I'm keeping mine lol but good for everyone else this deserves a party

My pineapple Grin? I think that I'm only the unique user who has a pineapple as avatar .

OMG someone has opened an "avatar campaign" https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1009525.0   I don't believe.
Maybe having avatars enabled isn't such a good thing or we could allow a once every 3 month change?

I think it will not again the forum rules to "rent" our avatar, but I am not sure. A moderator (or maybe better an admin) should express his opinion about this "situation". I think the payrate will be very interesting.
3550  Economy / Services / Re: Avatar campaign - sell your avatar and earn some bitcoin. on: April 01, 2015, 04:16:43 PM
I don't think anyone will pay bitcoin for rent an avatar, but maybe someone will be interested (I don't think it is against the forum rules).
3551  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Yanis Varoufa: Greece Will Adopt the Bitcoin If Eurogroup Doesn’t Give Us a Deal on: April 01, 2015, 03:25:08 PM
Yes , it is an april fool. Check the tweet that Yanis Varoufa made  :

3552  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 01, 2015, 02:42:47 PM
what a stupid joke Smiley lost 5 minutes of my life troubleshooting!
How is this a stupid joke? Because you were fooled by it?  Cheesy
This was the best time to return the avatars. Like I've said in a previous post, a lot of people will get confused and the pictures that are being generated are awesome.

People are still confused or oblivious to it if you read some of the replies above. Just goes to show you what a great/clever joke it was. Most April's Fools are lame and cliche but this was very well and intelligently done. I think it could be dragged out much longer than just today and half the people would still be none-the-wiser months down the line especially those who don't have alt accounts.

Can I ask you one thing? Why didn't you put an avatar?
3553  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 01, 2015, 01:15:22 PM
Please also note that 2nd April onwards all troll avatars will be hard-coded to your profile and changing avatars will be disabled again.
So all 'April Fool' avatars will stay permanently on your profile.

If you don't want this to happen, immediately remove your avatars before start of 2nd April GMT time!

This is a troll post

Nice joke  Grin. However what do you think guys ? Maybe someone will start to sell his avatar for btr, I suggest the staff to put a rule against this thing.
3554  Other / Meta / Re: In-place editing of posts on: April 01, 2015, 01:01:18 PM
That reminds me... One thing that does kind of annoy me is that any links or pictures won't show up properly after a post is edited using that option. You have to refresh the page to see your post properly. It's not a huge deal in most cases but for posts with lots of links or images, it does get rather annoying.

Also I'm kind of surprised to see that some people haven't noticed it. It's a pretty old feature although I guess it can be hard to see especially for those with larger displays.

I think this function existed from the "first" day of the creation of this forum, or maybe am I wrong? I always use it when I should edit a post quickly.
3555  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 01, 2015, 12:58:24 PM
Haha what a great April Fools prank. I'm hoping that custom avatars stick after today too, I really like mine and must have just missed the window when I signed up to when avatars were disabled.

Theymos has said :

Smiley

If you especially dislike the avatar you were given, uploading a new avatar (or reuploading your current one) will give you a random new one. If anyone has any ideas for more "fool" avatars to add, post them here and I might add them later today.

The avatar feature will work properly after April 1.
3556  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 01, 2015, 12:22:37 PM

I'm sure we'll get them soon enough, though you can disable avatars like signatures (though it probably won't stop people from complaining). I was wondering how long it would be before sig campaigns capitalise on this or people start renting/selling them individually:

I don't want to sell my avatar else people will start ignoring my PMs as well  Cheesy I won't be able to even sell my gift cards or exchange money due to that. Selling my signature space is enough  Smiley

BTW, did Theymos actually play a prank? I don't like this man in my avatar. He looks awful  Cry Undecided

I want my "Mother Mary" avatar back.

We should wait tomorrow and see if all the avatars will change or not (but I think it is only an april fool). Don't worry Wink.
3557  Other / Meta / Re: Avatars re-enabled on: April 01, 2015, 11:27:58 AM
LOL That's not what I uploaded. I don't know now whether it's theymos or you guys messing with me.  Cheesy

I would prefer no avatar than that one lmao.

Then go here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=avatar  don't choose an avatar (from your pc) & click upload. In this way you will "lose" your current & desidered avatar.
3558  Other / Politics & Society / Yanis Varoufa: Greece Will Adopt the Bitcoin If Eurogroup Doesn’t Give Us a Deal on: April 01, 2015, 11:16:02 AM
While Greece’s lenders are pushing the Greek government to accept their terms in order to allocate funds so the country will not go bankrupt, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis seems to have another ace up his sleeve. The second top thinker in the world according to prospect magazine surprised even his closest aids at a secret meeting when he said “We ‘ve had enough, we ‘ll run on Bitcoin.”

Sources very closed to Greece’s minister of finance told Greek Reporter that today Yanis Varoufakis held a top secret meeting with high-ranking finance ministry officials to prepare them in case negotiations at the upcoming Eurogroup fail. The anonymous source noted that everybody in the room was staring at each other when Varoufakis – also a prominent blogger – said “We ‘ll go to Bitcoin, we will be ahead of all the world economies and although it may be painful in the beginning, Greece’s economy will thrive in the long term.”

The Greek Finance Minister went on to explain what is the cryptocurrency and how it will be implemented into Greeks’ day to day life by using a special mini computerized card with a chip. All citizens will carry the card as an electronic wallet. The card will be distributed for free to all Greek citizens via the local tax offices but it will also be available for purchase at the country’s entry points for 45 euros, or 0,20 Bitcoin each. The sale of the card to tourists is expected to be another form of revenue for cash-strapped Greece.

3559  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you prefer bitcoin, FIAT money or other? on: April 01, 2015, 11:09:30 AM
I prefer fiat right now, though that may change in the future. I am a realist and live in reality... not the land of whimsy and emotion. Fiat is legal tender and we could not survive without it under current laws. Even if you attempt to live on only Bitcoin, those you do business with must convert it to fiat and use fiat to buy products and services and pay taxes along the way. Because of existing laws, you can't "live on Bitcoin." Until governments start accepting Bitcoin for taxes, fiat will rule. That said, I see a bright future for Bitcoin.

Thanks for your fantastic reply, and what if I told you "revolution". If we hypothesize that all the people of a country will stop to pay tax because they hate FIAT money... what do you think will happen? I would like to remind you of what revolution means :

- the usually violent attempt by many people to end the rule of one government and start a new one

- a sudden, extreme, or complete change in the way people live, work, etc.

- the action of moving around something in a path that is similar to a circle

Now I realized that having so many colorful avatars are disturbing and so we may soon see a post "Disable all avatars" like we have "Disable all sig ad campaigns"  Cheesy Just kidding  Wink

I'm sure we'll get them soon enough, though you can disable avatars like signatures (though it probably won't stop people from complaining). I was wondering how long it would be before sig campaigns capitalise on this or people start renting/selling them individually:

You could do an avatar campaign, perhaps offer a bonus for people changing to a dadice avatar?

Already discussing about it. Might decide in 24 hours. Smiley

I doubt avatar renting will be as lucrative. The main reason for this is that you can't make it a clickable link like you can with signatures, it isn't really a proper ad. Also, I think people value their avatars more than their signatures.

Yes of course, I don't think it will start an "avatar campaign" . It will be really insane as concept.
