This is just a guess, but the two front plugs. Perhaps there is 1 board per side? I would not plug 2 on one side in other words. My 2 cents. I bought 2 and trying to get another 2 but wont let me put in my cart. I guess sold out of S3...
Been sold out of batch 3 for a while now Wink.

Definitely do NOT plug both into 1 side and none on the other... or you'll only be powering 1 board.  The design is virtually the same as the S1, so at least 1 plug per board.
3542  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: how to mine bitcoin without a pool? on: July 16, 2014, 09:47:39 PM
If you solo mine with small amount of power, it would be like winning the lottery. Some people have turned old USB hardware thats not profitable as a miner, and turned them into a "lottery ticket". Its possible but not likely. You would be better off join a pool.
I'm one of those.  I have 5 Antminer U2 sticks that I use to solo mine.  I haven't solved a block yet, but the cost to run the things is minimal (they are controlled by a raspberry pi) so I keep it going.  Chances are exceedingly slim that I will solve a block, but why not let them hash away and try?  The earnings on a pool are dust anyway.

I'm thinking of doing something similar.  Do we have any recent reports of low hash miners who got lucky?  I was thinking of mining with very little, just for the heck of it, like a lottery ticket.  But, I'd like to have some hope, in terms of someone else who's gotten lucky recently with very little hashrate.  I'm sure it must happen all the time...

PS what are requirements for Antminer U2 sticks?  Can I run just on a nothing-special laptop?

Ha, yes it literally is like a lottery ticket. The comparison is awesome! The only depressing thing is that your lottery tickets' chances of winning get smaller and smaller every 12 days, unless you invest in a new miner lottery ticket
If we're going to continue the analogy, you should have written, "your lottery tickets' chances of winning get smaller and smaller every 2016 jackpots..." Smiley

I just saw the option to take a 10% coupon or a 7.7% refund.
yeah, choose...
if you're going to buy again, take the coupon
if u're unsure... just take refund
if somehow u have to buy again, just ask users around here who have some left coupons

Keep in mind that future S3 batches will likely be priced lower, so taking the 7.7% refund now may actually end up being a better deal even if you do end up buying more S3s.

Isn't the coupon supposed to be for a fixed 10% of the price paid? E.g. 0.15 BTC for a pair of B1. I chose a refund so I can't verify that.

I thought the coupon was good for 10% off the value of a future S3 purchase, and a S3 will likely cost less in BTC in the future.
From another post, you get 1 coupon per unit you ordered.  So, since you had to order a minimum of 2 units, you will get a minimum of 2 coupons.  Total value of the coupons is based upon the price you paid in the batch your ordered.  For example, if you ordered 5 batch 1 units at 0.75BTC each, you will get 5 coupons of 0.075BTC each.

Is it worth it if you mine a ton of a new altcoin and sell on a bubble for more BTC?
im sorry that I have to resort to these practices to get BTC but the rest are too slow  Cry
Sure, it can be.  It's a gamble... maybe you get in early enough and can mine a bunch at a low difficulty.  Maybe the coin gets put on an exchange and people inflate the value because it is new.  Maybe you trade your coins for BTC while the getting is good.  Or maybe you mine a ton of a completely worthless crap coin and have a wallet filled with something that you can look at and say, "At least I have a few million of these."

I already know the feel of having a coupel million shitty coins, not very good Sad
Imagine if you had cloud hashing power for DRK instamine, thats the shit
but its too much luck
LOL... want to buy some FSC?  I've got plenty.  DRK is X11, so CPU/GPU mined... go and sign up for a ton of cloud servers at AWS, Digital Ocean, etc and install the software on them all... might cost you a bit, though Wink

Here's your Flip Coin Cheat: https://notgonnashowthisoneeither.net

That's a pretty expensive lesson, hope you've learned it.

Oh fuck my life. MBAM didn't detect that? I guess I need an aditional AV. What is the best antivirus to go along with MBAM and Comodo Firewall (free)?
What about Avira or NOD32?
Why would you even consider downloading something from a site with "hack" in the domain and "cheat" in the file?  I mean seriously... how about I create some crazy script and call it "GonnaStealYourBTC" and post it... wonder how many people would think, "Gee, that's a great idea, I think I'll run it to see what happens!"

People constantly trying to find that "here's free money!" scheme are always amazed when they get the raw end of the deal.  You don't need an additional AV... you need to get some common sense and not go and download stupid shit.

Lol I didnt download anything, I just find it a bit offensive that I paid for MBAM Premium and it seems it is unable to detect that file.
Gotcha.  No anti-virus program is perfect.  Typically they are reactionary.  A new virus is found, it spreads, research is done, a cure/fix/detection is created, it is added to a new definition file for you to download and install.  Even with the best system out there, you're not immune.  Your best defense is good old common sense.  Got an email from someone you don't know?  Probably shouldn't open any attachments or click any links.  Find something that seems too good to be true?  It is.

Computer security for average bitcoin computer/smartphone/tablet user is dark magic :/ thats sad but true
Fixed that for ya Wink

If you met a complete stranger on the street, would you willingly give him the keys to your car if he promised to turn it into a Lamborghini?  Or, the keys to your house if he told you he was going to install a new 70" 4K TV?  Would you let somebody reach into your pocket and grab your wallet if he told you he was going to put $100 in there for you?  Would you leave your iPhone on the front seat of your car and leave all the windows open while you went shopping?

I suppose the same people who answer yes also have ATM pins of 1111 or 1234 and passwords of "password".
3547  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What percentage of your BTC should be kept in cold storage? on: July 16, 2014, 09:17:39 PM
Cold storage = paper wallet, offline computer, secure hardware wallet, etc.

What do you think is the ideal percentage of BTC that should be kept in a cold wallet? Is there a trade-off between usability vs. security? If someone intends to hodl their bitcoins long term then perhaps 90 percent in cold storage sounds good. If someone is using their bitcoins to buy things, gamble, day trade, and invest in altcoins, then I would imagine 90 percent would be a pretty unrealistic figure.

What do you think?
What percentage of your paycheck do you keep in your wallet, in a checking account, in a savings account, in other investments?  If you have multiple accounts and distribute your money between them, follow that same pattern with your BTC.  It's a lot easier eating a small transaction fee for moving the money around than it is eating a loss of your coin because your hot wallet was compromised.

I found this youtube video that gives you a pretty good idea of what the SP10 sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__crNsd7GEM

You can turn your speakers up nice and high to get the full effect Smiley

Yes, that's really a video of the SP10 hashing.  Yes, it does really scream like that.

I'm running on Slush's pool

this is a screenshot from the site, the number in the red box changes all the time

That number will constantly change because your contribution to the round is constantly changing, as is everybody else's.

Mind if i ask where are you getting 0.04$ per kw/h?  I love that number for electricity.

As was pointed out, GAWminers is just a retailer/reseller.  Spondoolies-Tech actually produces the miner.  I own their first model (the SP10) and am very satisfied with its performance, although it screams like a banshee

Seriously? I wasn't aware that they had shipped anything at all. So its really noisy? Have you tried adding airflow?
I think you might be misunderstanding me.  I own the SP10.  It's the first product SP-Tech produced.  I got it in May.  It's a 1.4TH/s miner based on their Hammer ASIC.

The SP30 is their second generation machine.  It is based on their 28nm RockerBox ASIC.  It is a 6TH/s machine.  It has not yet been built, since SP-Tech is still waiting to get the chips from the manufacturer.  They have everything ready and as soon as the chips are in will be building and testing.

I didn't misunderstand. How about its power consumption? SPTech made these machines to be more power efficient, are they in practice?
Oh... OK, sorry... thought you might have been under the impression that I somehow had an SP30 Smiley.

So... my experience with the SP10 has been from good to very good.  The initial batch of the product (April) had fast corner ASICs and hashed above their advertised rate of 1.4TH/s (usually getting anywhere from 1.5 to 1.6TH/s).  The next batch, the one I got, was unfortunately built out with slow corner ASICs, and initially nobody could get over 1.3TH/s.  Also, if you were running on standard US power at 110/120V, you were limited by the firmware to 1100 watts draw from the PSU.  This further reduced hash rate.  I typically got about 1.25 - 1.28TH/s at about 1000W from the wall.

As time has gone on, Zvisha (firmware god at SP-Tech) has worked very closely with a lot of us to release better and better versions of the firmware, and to help us with customizing the settings.  He also released a way to lift the PSU limit, and accompanied it with a warning to be careful.  So, after using that method and with the latest version of the firmware (1.5.2), my slow-corner May batch now runs at a constant 1.39 - 1.41TH/s at about 1200 watts from the wall.

You can also go the other way with the unit and down-volt it.  Running it at the slowest rate setting (which is called "medium" in the settings), I see about 1TH/s at about 700-750 watts at the wall.

when you are downloading from random people on skype you should know its fishy.
Funny enough for some reason a lot of people fall for it. I don't understand why but warnings like this one actually seems like it's necessary.
People fall for this crap all the time, even WITH warnings.

Think about it like this.  If I tell you the universe is filled with hundreds of billions of stars you'll likely believe it.  If I tell you the paint is wet, and there's a sign on the wall that says, "Wet Paint", I bet you touch that paint to see if it really is wet...

he should be safe.

when you get it.  mine 1 day out of 10 at www.bitsolo.net   and mine the other 9 days out of ten at your favorite pool.

If you need a psu I have a few extra ones and a I have some cables.

My psu deal is very good if you decide to get an s-3

1 day out of 10 as a lottery ticket of sorts?
Yup.  For 1 day out of 10, you try your luck solo mining.  It's an interesting thought... lose a day's mining (which, at current difficulty with the S3 means you lose 0.0128BTC) for a chance at 25BTC.  You a gambler? Smiley
3560  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: anyone hit the BTC lotto lately? on: July 16, 2014, 06:47:48 PM
I've been trying. I have 100 Ghps solomining for fun. So far nothing. I did find a block on btcguild a while back.... too bad as I've only earned 5 btc on guild, would have made a ton more solomining.

I'm considering solomining with my full 12 Thps when it comes online - save for electricity costs, which would give me a 1% shot per day!!
Would you explain how you got to your conclusions, please?  At current difficulty, that 12TH/s would expect to solve a block every 72 days or so.  Expected daily earnings are about 0.35BTC.  I'm trying to figure out how you conclude that you've got a 1% chance a day to hit that block.  Thanks Smiley.
