3541  Economy / Economics / Re: Crypto vs Stocks on: May 01, 2021, 01:35:09 PM
Which asset types do you think are better: crypto or stocks? Is crypto getting closer to becoming regulated just like stocks?
It depends on what you mean by better.  I happen to think that stocks are better if you're talking about retirement accounts and owning investments that provide income (in the form of dividends).  The latter is one thing that bitcoin doesn't provide, although other coins do--and I'm thinking of proof-of-stake coins in particular here.  And as far as owning stocks vs. bitcoin for the long term, I'd have to go with stocks simply because they're much less volatile and have a longer track record.

But if you're talking about trading and making short-term profits, I'd say crypto is the way to go (although you could certainly make money trading stocks).

Will stocks transition themselves to the Blockchain?
Now that would be interesting.  I'd love it if you could buy and sell stocks 24 hours a day like you can with crypto, and I think the 9:30am-4pm M-F stock market hours are quaint but very outdated.  I think if blockchain technology could be incorporated into the stock market, that might just become a reality.

But in any case, stocks and crypto are two different things even though they have some similarities.  Bitcoin can be used as a currency, whereas stocks certainly can't.  In that respect I think of bitcoin as closer to gold--at least in the old days when it was used as money--than stocks.  But that's a comparison that's been made ever since the beginning of bitcoin, and it's a tired one IMO.
3542  Economy / Economics / Re: “You don’t spend money now, you can’t spend after you died” on: May 01, 2021, 12:57:55 PM
Spend until you drop you plebs!
That's great advice if you're single and don't ever plan on having a family--and if you don't plan on leaving anything to any heirs or charity.  In other words, it's pretty selfish advice that only someone in his 20s (or younger) would give.

Look at Warren Buffett.  He's amassed billions of dollars and yet by all accounts lives fairly frugally.  He's not even going to leave his fortune all to his children; he's going to give it to good causes when he croaks.  Bill Gates (although he doesn't live nearly as frugally) has similar plans.

And aside from all of that, if you spend like there's no tomorrow you'll be fucked if you suddenly find yourself without a job or any other source of income.  It's happened to a lot of folks who were otherwise wealthy, including sports stars and musicians.  Anyone remember MC Hammer and Mike Tyson?  So there you go.  Save your money, live within your means and plan for a rainy day.
3543  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Livecoin Payment on: May 01, 2021, 12:25:32 AM
I don't know what is your intention, yet it's undeniable that I dislike to trade in this exchange anymore.
And there's no way to trade there anymore because they've closed already.
Lol, that's the first thing I thought when I read the above post.  It's like me saying I can't stand trading on Cryptsy anymore.

I'm convinced that all of those newbies claiming they got a 50% refund were shills (I wasn't convinced at first given Livecoin's supposed explanation of why those noobs were making those posts), and logically that means OP is full of shit too.  I haven't heard from any member here with any kind of reputation that's vouched for any repayment, so that speaks loud and clear that Livecoin pulled an exit scam, plain and simple.

and so on and a non-stop post on everyday basis having the same message out of those sockpuppets.  Cool
Yep, they're definitely sockpuppets.  And I do hope the folks who got scammed learned a lesson from this, which would be not to store coins on an exchange--especially a small, unregulated one like Livecoin.
3544  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Hotbit exchange is Proven Scam on: April 30, 2021, 11:27:55 PM
therefore, current constraints may stem from this problem.
I'm not sure whatever's happening with Hotbit is the reason for OP's dilemma.  It looks as though Hotbit either doesn't know what it's doing with the coin in question or is simply jerking OP and the rest of those people around.  And I haven't a clue as to what the truth is, but I suspect we'll know soon enough as to whether this is an exit scam or a real hack.

I haven't searched, so I'm going to ask:  is there a lot of information available about Hotbit, e.g., where they operate out of?  They seem like a small, unregulated exchange that can probably just run off with everyone's money without any regulatory body trying to track them down....but I could be wrong.  I'm hoping for the best for their customers' sake.
3545  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Attention] Hotbit shutdown all service for 7 days because of cyber attack on: April 30, 2021, 04:20:11 PM

If you have an account on Hotbit, the following are things you should be aware of

    The attacker has already gained access to the database, so your registration phone number, email address and asset data might have leaking risk. However, the password and 2FA key are encrypted so theoriotically should be safe. But from the security point of view, if your account and password on another website or app are the same as Hotbit's, it is safer to change the password now;
Ugh.  Here's a great reason why crypto exchanges should have a solid reputation and security before anyone even thinks of handing over their KYC docs.  There are lots of smaller exchanges which are now asking their customers to go through some kind of verification, and I just don't trust any of them with my data--which is why I've never created accounts with a lot of exchanges that I'd like to be able to use.

Hopefully this situation is precisely as it's being described by Hotbit and that there's not something more sinister going on behind the scenes--I'm not implying that there is, but you just never know.  Crazy things happen when crypto prices start shooting up, and that's when otherwise reputable exchanges go rogue.
3546  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Case of Thodex exchange aka Turkish Mt.Gox? on: April 30, 2021, 03:04:11 PM
It is interesting that Thodex CEO Faruk Fatih Özer left the country on April 20 from Istanbul Airport, deleted all his social media accounts, and there are suspicions he went to Thailand with all coins.
I'm betting those suspicions turn out to be spot-on if they haven't already (I haven't been following this story and am just reading about it now).  Anyhow, those actions on the part of the CEO indicate "scam" in big, bold letters and I'm not sure what else it could be.

It's amazing that after all of the exit scams we've seen over the years that they're still happening to this day.  People haven't learned to keep their crypto off exchanges when they're done trading, and these scammers still have the enormous testicles required to pull off such blatant scams as this.

On a related note, what is this announcement about bitcoin/crypto not being allowed as a payment method in Turkey?  The government hasn't banned crypto, correct?
3547  Other / Meta / Re: How do I remove the Warning message from my posts? on: April 30, 2021, 01:59:58 PM
What do you suggest I do?
Can I create new topics by redirecting the old ones to the current ones?
You could PM Vod and see if he responds, but if he really left the forum behind he's probably not going to be logging in and checking PMs.  Since the feedback is more than three years old, he might have had mercy on you but unfortunately you waited until after he declared that he was leaving the forum to try to resolve the issue.

I'm afraid you're screwed, because nobody else is going to be able to remove Vod's feedback on you.  Not the moderators, not Theymos, only Vod himself can do that.

Why is this now a pressing issue for you?  You've had that neg since 2018 and it's not like Vod just got on DT, so your trust has been red since he left the neg on you.
3548  Other / Meta / Re: Post Deletion on: April 30, 2021, 11:57:13 AM
If my post is considered spam or junk post then there must be dozen of other post in the same thread that must be deleted because they don't meet the standards.
That's probably true, but there's only so much reporting that can get done and so many posts looked at and deleted by the moderators for any given thread--remember, new threads are popping up all the time, either new ones or ones that got bumped and many of them are filled with garbage posts.  So what you're asking is "why me?" and there's no great answer for that other than either someone noticed your post(s) in particular or your posts were much worse than the others in the thread(s) involved.

Either way, you probably won't get an answer from the mods and even if you do there's nothing you can do about it except to take this as a warning.  Hell, I've had plenty of posts deleted by the mods and I haven't bitched about any of them.  And I'd say that most members who make a decent number of posts have had at least a few of them nuked--so don't take it personally and just try to do better in the future.
3549  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: coinam inot working on: April 29, 2021, 11:44:32 PM
Use much better wallets like electrum as suggested.
OP, take note of the above advice.  Don't hate bitcoin because you're using a lousy wallet--bitcoin didn't jump out of a birthday cake with a gun pointed at your head to force you to download Coinomi.  Just sayin'.  And also as others have said, you haven't lost that $15 worth of BTC as long as you wrote down the seed phrase.

And as far as the problem with Coinomi goes, I've had that issue before because I've used the wallet before....but not in a long, long time, and I don't remember exactly how I got the problem fixed.  What I can say is that all is not lost and I have faith that you'll figure it out.

On the other hand, if you're going to attempt to send $15 worth of bitcoin to another address right now, be prepared to lose a decent chunk of that $15 in network fees.  I'd suggest that if you absolutely don't need to send it immediately, wait until the network is less congested and it's cheaper to send small amounts.  Now that's not Coinomi's fault, it's a bitcoin thing that happens from time to time.
3550  Economy / Reputation / Re: Do you miss VOD poll? on: April 29, 2021, 09:24:11 PM
I would look like a belly dancer in a large lol... but you do get more exercise than I do.
I know this is way, waay off topic but don't worry your purtty lil' head about how that t-shirt is going to fit my bodice, my man.  It might just happen that I will never wear the thing but keep it as a collectible of sorts, kind of like a couple of those stickers that I kept for myself (I could use some more of those if you wouldn't mind; I can stick them to things visible to the public now that the weather is getting nicer).

I've been using the shit out of that little solar battery pack thing, it's super cool.
More off-topic madness!  This thread is degenerating into anarchy!!  But yes, I recommend anyone with the spare cash to do so buy a power bank of some kind and keep it around you in case you find your phone or other USB-chargeable device low on juice.  I gave a gift of a power bank car battery charger to a family member and it has come in handy at least twice that I know of.  Those things could save your ass.
3551  Economy / Economics / Re: Tesla's Q1 SEC Reveale holding $2.48 Billion Bitcoin on: April 29, 2021, 08:13:19 PM
After a lots of rumers
Rumors

And bro, please, for the love of all that's dark and unholy, please don't post pics like that--that photo of the car takes up more space than the text in your post, and there's something not right about that.  Just stick to writing and forget about that kind of crap that the mainstream media does, e.g., feeding us pictures whether they're relevant or not to the article.

And yeah, Tesla holds a lot of bitcoin.  It's old news--and there was a thread the other day about Tesla selling a whole bunch of bitcoin as well.  I'm not sure what their game plan is as far as their involvement in the crypto world.  I would have thought that if they'd bought bitcoin it would have been for the long term, like the other companies that bought it as an investment or as an alternative to fiat.  Seems strange to me that Tesla made a sale so soon.
3552  Economy / Reputation / Re: Do you miss VOD poll? on: April 29, 2021, 08:03:46 PM
I'm just curious (and I'm trying to use this VOD drama to whore my signature! Tongue)
LOL.  I know there was some serious friction between you two, at least toward the end before Vod decided to leave the forum, but I think bitcointalk was better off with him here than not.  It's not like the two of us are close friends or anything, but I'd say I miss his presence--although it was pretty clear his thinking as of late was not as clear as it was when I first became aware of his existence (2015).  That was a shame to see, because he's a bright guy and was always pretty solid.

There's been a dearth of drama since he and Lauda left (and I'm pretty sure CH is gone as well).  That might be a good thing overall, but at least said drama always made for some interesting reading--as long as you were an innocent bystander and not a target of it.

BAC, t-shirt?  No gots yet.

I am not sure what caused Vod's issues. Probably some kind of trauma. He has had issues for a while. I think the likely isolation caused by the pandemic probably made things worse for him.
I have no idea what kind of isolation Vod was going through, but that stroke certainly couldn't have helped his mental status.  In fact, I'm pretty sure there was a correlation between when he announced that he'd had the stroke and the beginning of the bad judgement calls and crusading against OgNasty and (I think) one or two other members.
3553  Economy / Economics / Re: Exodus Wallet Public Offering on: April 29, 2021, 04:29:37 PM
This is from the announcement:

Quote
What Happened: According to an announcement shared with Benzinga, Exodus started offering to its customers a way to buy the tokenized shares through a “mini-IPO” under Reg A+ directly within the wallet software.

Regulation A+ allows the public to invest in private companies whose stocks are not traded on a public stock exchange.

So this isn't exactly a true IPO.  In fact, although I don't know what the hell it actually is, it sounds extremely sketchy to me.  And as far as what they're planning on using that money for, or who the investors are so far....I don't know that either, but Exodus is a crappy wallet last I checked and I'm pretty sure the money being raised isn't to upgrade it.

I'm not sure what to believe when an announcement like this is made on crypto news sites rather than mainstream ones.  Thanks for noticing this, OP, and for posting about it--I certainly wouldn't have found out about this any other way.  Should be interesting to see what comes of it.
3554  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: What do you do with the Hardware Wallet Box? on: April 29, 2021, 04:03:57 PM
I still have the box to the Keepkey wallet I never used--the box it came in was the best thing about it, unfortunately (lol).  But yeah, I'd say for security's sake you ought to toss the box and anything in it you don't need just in case you have a break-in or whatever.  You should be secure enough in any case, but why even take chances like that?

As far as reselling goes, hopefully nobody would buy a second-hand hardware wallet, regardless of whether the owner still has the original box or not.  You're just asking for trouble if you do that, and given that most devices aren't that expensive it wouldn't be worth the cost savings to buy a used HW wallet.
3555  Other / Meta / Re: Google partial blackholing of Bitcointalk? on: April 29, 2021, 03:26:58 PM
It's not just Bitcointalk. I've noticed that Google no longer indexes (or at least no longer displays in search results) pages that haven't been updated in over 5 years, effectively causing huge portions of the web to vanish.
I've noticed that without actually recognizing the implications of what Google's doing--if you search for pretty much anything, all you get are relatively recent results.  Not only that, the results are usually from mainstream websites that are probably employing a ton of SEO.  That's why I stopped using Google as a search engine some time ago, though I can't say DDG is ideal.

I haven't posted anything on bitcointalk so critical that I'd want it archived for decades, so this doesn't bother me so much--but there are tons of very helpful posts (especially in the technical sections) that really ought to be searchable on Google, and it sucks that they're basically being sucked down a memory hole.  That's Google for you, though.

Imagine being the Big Brother of the Internet and having that "Don't Be Evil" motto, is kinda like an oxymoron.
That motto is waaaay outdated and they know it, too.
3556  Economy / Economics / Re: Biden's IRS Plans Could Boost Crypto Adoption on: April 29, 2021, 01:57:51 PM
There are many criminals around the world who actively trade cryptocurrencies in order to stay under the radar at present.
Trading cryptocurrencies wouldn't be a great way to stay under the radar if you're looking to evade paying taxes.  I'd think you'd be more likely to lose money than anything else, given how volatile crypto is.

I've heard that most tax evasion is done by small business owners, which totally makes sense, since they aren't public companies and keep their own books.  It isn't primarily cryptocurrency users, though no doubt it happens.

And the US government is going to need that projected $1 trillion dollars in uncollected taxes if they want to keep printing money and giving it away in the form of stimulus.  Jesus.  Have we entered Alice in Wonderland or what?
3557  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: sweeping private key - mempool min fee not met on: April 28, 2021, 11:55:38 AM
But, I am thinking how can someone destroy paper wallet when the sweeping is not yet successful.
It does seem odd that someone would throw away (or destroy, I guess) a paper wallet before even getting that error message--OP must have put a torch to that wallet damn quick!

So is ranochigo correct in saying that the transaction hasn't been broadcast on the network yet?  That error message does make it sound as if that's true, but I've never come across that one before.  Did the wallet stop displaying the private key after OP typed it in?  This situation seems very weird--and yeah, I hope OP is able to up the fee or somehow rebroadcast the transaction when whatever fee he can pay is sufficient.  I also hope for his sake that that wallet didn't have a huge amount of bitcoin on it.  Jeez.
3558  Economy / Economics / Re: Are institutional investors capable of selling their bitcoins? on: April 27, 2021, 08:36:44 PM
Oh wow, I didn't know that website existed--I'm definitely bookmarking it, as I'm curious about that kind of data and I lose track mentally of which companies have bought bitcoin and how much, etc.  Thanks for including that link in your post, OP.

Now, a very common logic, which institution would like to buy btc at $100k or even at million dollars when the seller institution is already taking out big profits in fiat by selling their btc to the buyer Institution? Won't that btc be coming with an impermanent loss if the price dumps later?
I'm not sure I fully understand your question--nobody knows how high bitcoin is going to go, so it isn't necessarily true that buying it at a price of, say, $100k would be screwing the buyer by guaranteeing them a loss.  Nor do I think that there need to be big buyers at the ready in order for any of these corporations to sell their bitcoin.  It's quite possible to sell a huge amount over an extended period of time, which is exactly how mutual funds or other big investors sell huge chunks of stock.  They don't just dump it all on the market at once, since that would drive the price down.  Nor do they have to sell everything all at once to another buyer.
3559  Economy / Economics / Re: Tesla still an unprofitable automaker on: April 27, 2021, 06:06:55 PM
It will take a decade before their stock price would justify the profits made from selling cars.
Maybe not that long if people start wising up and buying electric-powered cars instead of gas-guzzling monstrosities.  And I'm not sure how extensive Tesla's product offering is, but it might help if they produced some cars targeted at the average workaday person (and they might--again, I'm not familiar with how many models they have but I do know they produce some very expensive ones).

I just took a look at their EPS, and it looks like it's $0.62/share with a P/E of 1,173x.  So they're definitely an overvalued stock, and especially if bitcoin sales account for a significant portion of their profits for the last quarter (or any quarter) since that's not their core business.

Why the hell did they even buy bitcoin if they were just going to sell it so quickly?  Sure, they might have made a profit but they're not in the business of currency speculation.  At least with MSTR, they're keeping their bitcoin as an alternative to cash and presumably plan to hold it long-term.
3560  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: NexonBTC - fake exchange on: April 27, 2021, 12:00:15 PM
You can open up their Terms of Use Page and compare it with Binance's Term page and see the similarities.
This is true, but unfortunately for various reasons a lot of people are not going to know to compare it to Binance or any other exchange's website--and that's what these scammers are counting on.  They don't need to keep their scam in business for a long time, nor scam millions of suckers.  They only need a couple large-value scams in order to make it worth their while.

It's got to be tough for newbies who don't know any better and are just looking for an exchange.  They come across one with a slick website like this one (NexonBTC) and don't realize it's a complete scam.  If you're a newbie reading this, do some research before picking an exchange and generally stick to the bigger ones like Binance, Coinbase, and even Kucoin.  The smaller ones are questionable, and brand new ones like this scam site are downright dangerous.
