3561  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darknet market plans to accept ETH. on: March 31, 2017, 12:57:52 PM
They are accepting it, and have been for a few days. They accept bitcoin and monero, too.

They will build the platform on bitcoin, with  eth and xmr as alternatives, but many vendors will not accept them.

Do we have any data on how many vendors are seeing sales in Monero and Eth?
3562  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin dominance keeps decreasing due to recent altcoins pump. on: March 31, 2017, 12:56:23 PM
good - btc needs to wake up and stop ruining our party. I don't think it is healthy to have one coin that is so dominant over all of the rest anyway.

This. There are several alts that are better as currencies than bitcoin, and it's time the market realized this.
3563  Economy / Speculation / Re: China found huge gold mine. Price evolution? on: March 31, 2017, 12:32:06 PM
The Gold price dep3ends on speculators view of inflation.

If there is a threat of inflation building, then gold rises. If the outlook is deflationary, then gold falls.

Also - gold competes against things like US treasuries, and as the Fed is raising interest rates, treasuries look like good value.
3564  Economy / Speculation / Re: for the first time ever, i'm hedging part of my long term position with altcoins on: March 30, 2017, 08:18:19 PM
That's what usdt is for. Anyone buying doge with the expectation of preserving their dollar value is a freaking maniac.

Doge is holding up splendidly in dollar terms...!
3565  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Next Pump: Litecoin... on: March 30, 2017, 02:54:07 PM
noup Grin next doge

Well doge is definitely moving up, but in a slower more controlled way. It seems to gain a few satoshi every day.
3566  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: What will happen with altcoins if bitcoin cost 700$? on: March 30, 2017, 02:52:25 PM
Well, the last time there was a big crash (2014), some investors got out of alts as well, they just got scared - that's because MtGox collapsed, people lost money, and Silk Road got closed down as well.

So - it really depends on WHY bitcoin falls to $700. If it is because another exchange crashes and burns like MtGox, it will take down the alt space with it.

But if bitcoin declines because it is being overtaken by ETH or some other coin, alts may well prosper as people seek the next big thing.
3567  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What cryptocurrency is solving the scaling problem? on: March 30, 2017, 12:45:07 PM
Simple as that. Please discuss.
There are zero cryptos that are doing anything remotely similar to what Bitcoin is trying to solve. All other cryptos have far smaller transaction rates, and because of this they never have to make themselves larger.

There may be some cryptos that "scale" but chances are they're never actually going to have to test their effectiveness due to their blocks never getting filled ion the way that Bitcoin's do.

Actually, both doge and steem have come close in the past to equalling the number of transactions that bitcoin does. Both managed easily because they confirm very very quickly.

The real issue with bitcoin is it's ten minute block time, which allows thousands of transactions to build up in those ten minutes, waiting to be confirmed.
3568  Economy / Speculation / Re: A tale of gambling and greed. on: March 30, 2017, 12:22:25 PM
The MtGox thing was hard to predict, mainly because it had been the longest running bitcoin exchange. People had seen other exchanges come and go and thought that because Gox was still standing, it was safe.

Exchange risk is THE biggest risk in bitcoin space. I can see why the SEC rejected the bitcoin ETF, citing that most of the trading volume was done on unregulated exchanges. I guess their fear is another Gox tanking the price - prices arn't meant to move because the exchange is corrupt, but because of fundamental values and the economy.
3569  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Will Dogecoin have a future? on: March 29, 2017, 05:17:13 PM
Well it seems to have had a bit of a pump today - it's up about 23%.

Yeah. Sometimes Dogecoin has this sorts of pumps, and while being little, it is a great way to make some profit if you take advantage of the price movements. Still, the Dogecoin has remained between the $0.000230 mark and I think that it will be that way for a long time (due to this high inflation). Perhaps, if someday Dogecoin could experience a reduction in total supply, it would make it a much more valuable altcoin.

In the meantime, it would be just to make use out of Dogecoin, as well as keep it alive by supporting it with full nodes, and other means. I have hope in this exciting altcoin, saving a little DOGE each day on a paper wallet for future use.

Nevertheless, in my eyes, Dogecoin will always be one of the best altcoins for daily use. Just my thoughts.  Grin

Actually, the steadiness of Doge's dollar value is what makes it a really useful coin. You can use it to move money from exchange to exchange without really losing through fluctuations of price.

Having a steady value means it is more likely to be used as a currency than as an asset. If more online retailers accepted doge, I think it would be used more than bitcoin (people tend to hoard bitcoins).
3570  Economy / Speculation / Re: for the first time ever, i'm hedging part of my long term position with altcoins on: March 29, 2017, 05:03:11 PM
Don't know what you invested in, but I definitely think altcoins are way more risky than bitcoin will ever be.  And I don't think that fits the definition of "hedging" either.  Diversification,  maybe.  Hedging I don't see.

Some alts like Doge and Litecoin stayed absolutely steady in dollar terms, even as the bitcoin pump happened from November onwards. Which meant that if you used bitcoin to buy either doge or ltc in Jan, you would have locked in bitcoin's dollar value at that point.
3571  Economy / Speculation / Re: My conspiracy theory based on some observations of the btc markets. on: March 29, 2017, 03:40:45 PM

Quote
Low volume exchanges have higher prices

That is the point of this topic. But why is that? Saying that there is not enough liquidity is a double edge sword. Why would they be higher instead of lower. That seems logical, but its just an illusion of an argument.

Because a premium is built in for not doing business.

Suppose you have a price of $1000 on one of the big exchanges. And you place a sell order for $1000 on the Polish exchange. Because of lack of volume on the Polish exchange, your order just sits there for days. Meanwhile the price has rapidly fallen on the other exchanges to $950.

The person who has placed their order on the Polish exchange would have lost money, due to low volume and no trades, if they could only get $950. So they leave it at the original sell price.

And suddenly, you end up with the premium for low volume.
3572  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Could Bitcoin be replaced, at least temporarily, by Ether? on: March 29, 2017, 02:29:58 PM
It could be Coke v Pepsi, or it could be MySpace v Facebook.

With MySpace, the users just got fed-up and migrated over. There is some indication that users are getting tired of waiting over an hour for their six confirmations on bitcoin, especially as confirmations afre quicker on Ether (and most alts).

So Bitcoin has a usability issue, which is masked at the moment because speculators outnumber users.
3573  Economy / Speculation / Re: Has the hard fork happened? on: March 29, 2017, 02:25:37 PM
Even with 51% of total hash power of the network BU miners will have to produce blocks larger than 1MB and the majority of nodes will have to validate those blocks for up to 2 weeks I imagine to successfully perform a hard fork but they won't do it why? answer is really simple, exchanges won't trade and list that second coin even if it has the majority of hash power behind it unless they show BU the green light there will be no hard fork.

This is quite sad, this only show who is the boss LOL.  So it is not the miner, nor the developers but indeed the exchanges! The consensus of the miners weighs nothing if the exchanges says otherwise. And, the way you said it, all the effort of BU will be in vain because at the end it is the exchanges who will decide what is good for Bitcoin.  Funny isn't it?  This made me think what are BU fighting for?

The exchanges will simply list both coins and the users will decide which to focus on and buy.

A bit like the Ether fork, where some miners decided to mine the classic version - and the exchanges made both available, so speculators and users could decide.

It's financial democracy, where people vote with their money.
3574  Economy / Speculation / Re: Solid X ETF on: March 28, 2017, 07:42:25 PM
They will likely wait and see for a few years to find out whether the regulated exchanges (Gemini and Coinbase) gain volume. If the regulated exchanges do end up with the most volume in a year's time, then one of the two remaining ETF's will get approved. As long as the bulk of the volume is in non-US exchanges like Bitfinex and the Chinese exchanges, then the answer will be No.
You mean like 16M volume? because there are only 1M bitcoins in circulation worldwide and moving around different exchanges and no exchange will ever gain enough volume for SEC to approve any ETF. bitcoin doesn't need any ETFs but rather stability in performance.

I meant gain volume in percentage terms. As in the majority of all trading is happening on regulated exchanges.

If the majority of trading is on unregulated exchanges, they will continue to deny - and it looks like they have denied this one too.

There is only one more ETF left in the pipeline. If volume on the regulated exchanges doesn't increase, that one will get denied too.
3575  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Trade signal analyze. on: March 28, 2017, 07:35:41 PM
2017 and people still believing in TA...  Huh

What is wrong with TA? Its not perfect but it may help. Actually most of my colleagues doing trades use TAs as one of their basis.

It only really works for coins with large volume, and a long track record (i.e. the coin has been in existence for more than two years at the minimum).

For low volume coins, you have to be a bit reckless to rely on TA.
3576  Economy / Speculation / Re: Solid X ETF on: March 28, 2017, 03:42:18 PM
So after what we saw yesterday, it is clear that the ETFs are a good opportunity to make some BTC.

In March 30th, Solid X will try to get their ETF passed. We saw that Winklevoss ETF got rejected because SEC "can't regulate bitcoin". I fail to see how the outcome of this one will be any different. So I predict another dump.

The problem is, will people care about this one as much as the Winklevoss one? The Winklevoss are celebrities, I have no idea who "Solid X". There needs to be hype in order to make some cash from speculation.

Well, good luck and don't lose any BTCs, because in 10 years we will be rich so don't forget to hodl what you win.

The Solid X ETF won't be rejected - the decision will be postponed.

(They had to give the Winklevoss ETF a final decision, because they'd deferred the decision for the maximum amount of time already - 3 years).

3577  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Do retailers accept altcoins? on: March 28, 2017, 03:32:28 PM
The following UK voucher site accepts alts:

https://www.cryptodechange.com/

They are listed at the bottom (click the drop-down to select your coin): litecoin, doge, dash, feathercoin, peercoin and namecoin
3578  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: what is the best way to research alt coins? on: March 28, 2017, 02:44:44 PM
Read the subreddits as well - lots of coins have a reddit presence and community that is bigger than the one on bitcointalk.

Also - Google is your friend - always put the coin name + scam into google to see what comes up (disgruntled people will usually have posted comments on forums and blogs about problems).
3579  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Suggest me a website for Day Trading on: March 28, 2017, 02:35:57 PM
Poloniex, Bitfinex and Kraken offer margin trading.

But I'd advise you to research it before you try it - nothing like making mistakes while margin trading to make you poor...
3580  Economy / Economics / Re: Can we Manipulate Bitcoin price? on: March 28, 2017, 01:13:06 PM

I think it also, we have a capability to manipulate the bitcoin price. It will depend on us, if the community that uses bitcoin will support and use it for daily transaction. The demand of bitcoin will increase at the same time the value of bitcoin will also increase.

We really don't, not with the market cap being $17.2 bn.

The last time it was easy to manipulate bitcoin was in early 2013 when the price was under $100.
