3561  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin XT Post Mortem - Group Discussion on: September 17, 2015, 08:53:35 PM
I don't think "lets argue to see if XT is still bad once we get to the point we're unable to process all TX's as the blocks all start getting full" is a sound concept, because even though XT did include a block size change, changing the block size is not "Bitcoin XT".

As we probably all know, there are others suggested solution to this problem, while myself i think BIP100 is a solid concept for a solution, more options will arise.

I think Bitcoin XT is just a failed project that prove that trying to strongarm the Bitcoin scene into changing to their wallet is not going to work. IMO it just felt like they wanted to become the "Core devs of Bitcoin" somehow. Trying to turn Bitcoin into what they want, affecting Control over it.
3562  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How many light bulbs do I need to change to get 1 petahash. 0.1 btc reward on: September 17, 2015, 08:46:07 PM
I am not sure it will that efficient. Since its gadget-y and not very practical.

It is probably going to be expensive and inefficient. Then you need to add networking to an apparel that in no way should require it. And then lastly; What happen when the life time of the light is expended?

You would probably save/make more money from using efficient led lighting. Then just get racks of efficient miners, which vastly improve thermal density, which in turn makes heat dissipation much easier to plan out.
3563  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is mining dead ? on: September 17, 2015, 08:36:26 PM
It's more accurate to say mining is a dead investment when you think about other investment options. You can earn more money by Bitcoin trading, opening a BTC exchange, offering forex trading services etc.
Mining could be profitable but the profit you get would probably be less than all other investments'.

Like what? What beat Mining's 200% per Annum?  Are you saying you can ROI faster with trading, safely, with minimal time investment, whatever you put in Trading every 4 months?

I am not tracking here. You are suggesting that a mining enterprise produces a 200% per year return? You buy a $2000 S7 today, and you'll have $6000 at the end of one year (i.e. a 200% return)? I don't think even a Ponzi scheme will produce those kinds of returns.

+200% per year is not possible. You can only hope for a +150% bump in BTC price. Even the long fabled "Free Electricity" will not produce a +200% return in a year.

[Promoting]

Given the new S7 your break even is now about 18 - 24 months when looking at all the expenses and the halving coming up.

Why not do cloud mining where you do not have to worry about equipment.

Please view our posting in Marketplace -> Securities

If that is fact for an s7 18 to 24 months never going to RIO unless price of BTC goes up and can recover that way else BTC paid for machine and energy cost and diff factors it not going to cut it. Even gaining 200% RIO is impossable unless you got free energy and time on your hands to produce the coin and even then a big mining cluster could come on line and change it to never brake even.

I never ever said "mining with an S7 is 200% ROI". The S7 is ridiculously overpriced. You can get twice the GH/$ with other miners. The S7 is the last miner i would invest in at the moment. I'd get a bunch of S3's long before i get a S7 at current prices.

My miner of choice at the moment is the S5. The S4/+ also work. And underclocked S1 to an extent (but probably not for long, but i ROI'd them in 2 months and they are still profitable at the moment).
Then lastly S3 do very well, and eventually underclocked as difficulty increase, as it will be same or better than stock S5 but less space efficient.
3564  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread sept 4th. to sept 17th Picks are open. on: September 17, 2015, 08:26:50 PM
+4.01% to +4.25% please or closest if thats taken.
Congrats man.

And additionally he get 2 week's work of reward. Pretty secks if i may say so myself. Smiley See you in the next thread.
3565  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 3 x Antminer S3's / USA Only / $80 ea incl. shipping on: September 17, 2015, 07:24:30 AM
Since you seem inclined to drop the price. Let me know if you can make it worth with shipping to Canada. If so you can estimate to J8T 1S4. I'd fund and cover escrow.
3566  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S3 - Discarded? on: September 17, 2015, 07:16:10 AM
My Antminer s5 produce half as much discarded shares and it mine just fine so i wouldn't worry about Discarded share stats any longer.
Just make sure your hashrate on the poolside is where it's should be at.

The poolside is really your best stat look there and make sure you are getting proper hashing speed.   And chances are the discarded really will not hurt anything like others said.

But always check poolside on rates.  I check at least once a day if not multiple.

Thank you. I already contracted Bitmain and they said if the hash rate is good, everything is fine. Even the cgminer developer said those stats are worthless. Smiley

But i have a new problem since this morning. My hash rate is now only the halve. One of my board (chain1) is down or just display "xxxx...xxxx" under basic status.
Is my board defect? Can i fix that?

I get X's all the time after a live/soft reboot, while changing config. Its not impossible that the chips all died but it seem extremely unlikely to me. Everytime i get X counts i just power cycle it and it work fine afterwards.

Do that and let us know. Make sure the pcie are plugged correctly too, etc.
3567  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo Mining on an S3 with 51.1 Difficulty - here we go! UPDATE: Block Found!! on: September 17, 2015, 06:25:08 AM
well mine with usb for  is those profitable?I know energy consumed is lower then miners, but is it profitable did you made the calculation about it?

Well, its not any different to calculate than bigger miners. The math is the same. Cost of hardware/profit per day. If you get a 6 gh stick for 25 cents and you pay nothing-ish for electricity then you can ROI it in a few months. So is it "Profitable"? Yes. You will totally profit on your 25 cents once or twice over a year...

Yeah. You would need tons of sticks to make significant money but its not exactly impossible. Imo Stick miners (don,t confuse with USB, big miners can be plugged into USB too) are more like toys, units for testing, or such.

But typically USB sticks are very bad $/GH ratio so its typically not a good profitable investment.
3568  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: how much can you make weekly? on: September 17, 2015, 06:22:03 AM
I can make about 5$ in chash with bitcoin

You make 5$ in cash(?) with bitcoin, per how much time, doing what, spending how much time?
3569  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Best Bitcoin Mining hardware ? on: September 17, 2015, 06:20:01 AM

S5 give only 0,01 BTC/day

It is still more than zero.  Wink

A bit more, since i easily run mine at 1.3THs. But whats wrong with that? Its about 80$ per months. 4 months ROI at 300$~ Whats wrong with that? 2 Of them is 160$ per month. 4 of them is 320$ per month. Etc.
3570  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: how much can you make weekly? on: September 17, 2015, 06:17:49 AM
satoshi ?

from signature around 0.02BTC

and from faucet 20k++ satoshi /day. it depends my mood
i think you can earn more 20k satoshi from faucet site if you want spend a lot of your time in front of computer Smiley

Yes he can especially when he will use a faucet rotator with high paying faucets, he'll probably earn more than 100k satoshis a day but spending a lot of time using faucets is not worth it

So basically, in the world of faucet... 23 cents is "high paying"? If so, people need to start finding better use of their time.
3571  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Sidehack stick solo pool club on: September 17, 2015, 06:16:25 AM
The pool I was pointing my stick at said it would take 14months to reach the minimum payout, so redirected it to the pool club for lotto chance lol.

Good plan. Better odds.

FYI, you can look at this URL to see how the club is doing as far as its collective hash rate and best share:

http://solo.ckpool.org/users/1JiWuyX94wrCr7JhkAn7x5qNMCEef1KhqX

200m quite a way off still.

And yes, mining for dust with 8GH seem a bit pointless. Unless you have a big setup with tons of stick, better off using it as a lotto ticket imo. Thats why i bought a single one, anyways.
3572  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S5 - Underclock - Undervolt - Best J/GH on: September 17, 2015, 06:08:35 AM
As I said the the software is not at all my thing, but I assume there is a file that you can SSH into and edit on the controller board that will have the frequency divider & delay values? Same as there is for the S3?

Rich

Yes. I use WinSCP myself, pretty nice as you can edit everything from your windows computer more normally. Anyhow the json config file is /config/cgminer.conf. Open it and you will see the normal JSON style config.

Relevant line is;
"bitmain-freq" : ""

Example of proper value "bitmain-freq" : "3:393.75:1f06".
3573  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: September 17, 2015, 05:47:00 AM
All Phil's meter (which Novak and I also have one each for testing sticks) does is measure the DC voltage same as if you put a voltmeter across the pins on the jack. 5% drop on the bus line gets you 4.75V from 5V in, which you probably don't want to go below that. Your voltage will drop because of the resistance of the traces between the 5V source and the actual jack, and depending on how much current you're pulling it could eat up a fair bit of power.

My test setup uses a cheap unpowered hub off a laptop and a long USB extension cable. The no-load volts is 5.00 but with a 610mV/150MHz stick I see 4.35V at 610mA, so my stick is using 2.65W and my transmission losses are 0.4W or about 13% of the total power. That's pretty bad. The powered hub we use to burn in has reworked traces off a Molex, and probably doesn't drop 300mV at the port for a 2A load. Novak's taken sticks up close to 3A on it without trouble.

Gotcha, thanks. Could you tell me the pinout for the 4 pins? I have been assuming i would use those pins;

(Shamelessly ripped off Phil's picture)

3574  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Making watercooled S7 (NOT a guide. I wish I coud, just brainstorming) on: September 17, 2015, 05:30:29 AM
Are you sure the 4 brass-orange colors small circles in each corners arent screw holes? IF not then that could be possible but unusual for Bitmain's designs. Worse case scenario you would just have to drill holes in the Heatsink or even PCB where there are no circuitry. Please correct me if i'm wrong but there would probably be no issues there?
3575  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S5 - Underclock - Undervolt - Best J/GH on: September 17, 2015, 05:26:46 AM
Yes that table looks correct for the frequencies, same values as in the BM1384 Data Sheet. 75Mhz is probably going to be 0583 and will need a delay something like 52ms. Just need to know where the table is?

Rich

I'm not sure how to set the delay or where it comes into play. I'm glad you figured it out because i thought 75 was 4B in hex. So clearly i am missing something.
What do you mean "where the table is"? Do you mean where to plug the value? If so then that is strait in the config json in /config.
3576  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: September 17, 2015, 05:20:55 AM
so my hub is using 4 ports and about 3.55 amps to run 2 sticks at freq 300.

the power brick reads 5 volts and 4 amps     so at 3.55 amps out of 4 amps that is it for this hub 2 sticks at freq 300

I derate my brick's amps of 4  like this .8 x 4 = 3.2 amps so I am just beyond the hubs specs.

So my point is I need the meter to have a chance of knowing what my hub can do.

that voltage drop from 5.18 to 4.46 is a good clue I am maxxed.

as for what does a stick do on a good usb hub .  by good one that will do .5 amps and keep volts up at 4.8 or so  the stick will do 125mhz to 150mhz

but with out the meter you can not tell if your hub is good.

Is there anything preventing me from using a multimeter and check the dc volt on the sidehack stick for the same result? I assumed i would be able to check using the metal pin that connect the usb port to the PCB?

Other than that, i forgot the word that was used when i was explained how to check for the limit of your hub/usb port but it is the same process. When volt start dropping, it's because some current is being eaten by the hub. Hence you found the limit.
3577  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: September 16, 2015, 08:39:39 PM
Take a look at AJRGale's hub modification thread over in the Hardware forum. That's a lot better place for this discussion.

I will do that because I don't think my question is coming through here, the answers/examples ya'll are giving me are nothing I don't already know so the failing must be in my asking.

Back to the topic at hand, maybe my last question above can be answered: What is the max. frequency that the compac will run on @ 2.5 watts?  I.e. Assuming a maxed out "standard" usb 2.0 port 5V @ 0.5A, what is the max. frequency the compac will run?

If what you're asking is; "How do i figure out what is the max watt that X usb port can safely support?" then the answer is "Its either written under the usb hub or you need to test it out yourself which is pretty complicated imo." The reason is because simply the components in the USB hubs are lesser, smaller, not built to support higher current.

As i can't find the value on my usb hub or in the documentation i will have to poke around with my multi meter, slowly raising the values until i get less than i'm supposed. At which point i can guess that the current is not being transmitted properly because some components are overheating, generating heat = some current is wasted. Then tone it down to the point where i'm no longer wasting energy/overloading the port.
3578  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Making watercooled S7 (NOT a guide. I wish I coud, just brainstorming) on: September 16, 2015, 08:32:41 PM
I don't really understand your technical concern (not that smart ). So manby best if you contact bitman.

Some S7 allready in the wild! maby he can anser your question?
He seems very helpfull and open about it!

Time to answer some questions!

Can you try to run it with two PCIe connectors per board? It would be interesting to see if it needs all three.
The miner won't operate with two PCI-e connectors per board, according to Bitmain. See this image: https://i.imgur.com/OV3f8Ql.jpg - Read point #1

Thanks in advance for the sneak peek!

Can you confirm that the controller has 9 18-pin jacks, the same as the S5+? There are a number of us interested in trying to control multiple S7s from a single S7 controller.

I assume that it's the same controller, given the pictures from Bitmain. But it would be nice to have actual confirmation from someone with an S7 in hand.

Also, how long are the controller ribbon cables? Any chance that they would reach to an adjacent S7 next to a center unit?

Note that there's there's already a separate thread around obtaining extra or longer ribbon cables:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1173573.0
Confirming that the controller has 9x 18 pin connectors. See this image: https://i.imgur.com/JzUJsN9.jpg (just zoom into the connector area, the image is pretty high resolutions so you can count all nine)

As for the ribbon cables, they look fairly short. I don't think you'd be able to reach an adjacent S7 with the included cables. But I'm sure some longer ribbon cables would be able to reach the controller from a foot or two away.

How is your power setup for the G1600 on the S7 each blade on its own 12v rail ? (For others reading this the lepa has 6 12v rails which makes this a little tricky set up)
I mentioned my power configuration before:

I'm using the GPU/CPU/RAM rails on the LEPA to power the unit. I have four PCI-e connections on rail 12V5 (three connectors powering hashing boards and one powering the controller) and two connections on each of 12V3,12V4 and 12V6. So in total there are 10 PCI-e connectors on the miner and that's how I split them up.

I took a video of the unit as well, just going to render it and upload it now. Should be up in less than an hour! (Slow internet ftw!)

Some images I took of the miner for those interested:

Ah i see. If some people already have S7's in hand, you just need the dimension of the PCB, this way you can know what size of heatsink you will need. You may also need to know where the holes for the screws are. Then all that is left is getting the needed parts (Screws, tools, heatsink, tube, pump, liquid) to assemble it.
3579  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S5 - Underclock - Undervolt - Best J/GH on: September 16, 2015, 08:30:03 PM
There must be a table somewhere in amongst the files with all of all the frequencies you can select from 100MHz to 500MHz? Not at all up on the firmware side of things so need to know where to look. I would hope that you can then add say 75MHz to the table and then select it from cgminer? I suspect there will be a reg value for the divider frequency that can be worked out and also a delay variable? Just need to know where the table is?

Not expecting to find any voltage control, just frequency?

Rich

The only list i have would not be of use to us;
http://pastebin.com/bPpbWbEb

But if later tonight no one gave us the answer, i will try to just figure it out. It can't be that complicated.
3580  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is mining dead ? on: September 16, 2015, 08:12:07 PM
I am curious about what assumptions you make to "Break Even" after 4 months in terms of original costs, electricity costs, and difficulty changes. You assuming the same BTC price at the end of 4 months?

Yes. Difficulty is easy to assume over 3-4 months. Its a bit harsher right now assuming 5%~ steps.

And if the BTC price is -20% then you would be 20% behind at marked time. Or you could be +20%. No point in speculating on that one. Specially if you count your ROI in BTC and not USD. And obviously cheap electricity is needed.
