3561  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs Traditional Payment Processors on: May 03, 2019, 01:27:44 AM
It's been a decade since Bitcoin emerged as a decentralized digital currency for the people. While it's no secret that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrrencies have some drawbacks, they're still a great alternative to Fiat when it comes to making payments without a centralized entity in charge of our funds.

With latest advancements such as DAGs, smart contracts, Layer-Two scaling solutions, Dandelion Protocol, Zero Knowledge Proofs, and more, it's becoming more evident that crypto will someday replace traditional payment processors like PayPal, Apple Pay, and Android Pay. Yet, Blockchain technology is still struggling with user adoption and regulatory compliance.

Nonetheless, do you believe that there's hope for Bitcoin to beat traditional payment processors or will those same payment processors adapt to the Blockchain in the future? Huh

Adoption. All we need is the receiver to accept directly bitcoin, then we can make the transaction directly without all those intermediaries taking extra fees along the way. Regulation is an obstacle because governments could go after merchants and employers, but this tends to work better across borders where they have little control.

If i'm given the choice, i pick Bitcoin vs all the aforementioned. Perhaps we could add LN for certain types of micro-transactions (the infamous coffee).

Another kind of offchain transaction would be Litecoin, as this also has segwit which allows direct exchange between peers.

I'm glad that the squatters from codepink were kicked out from our embassy in Washington D.C. Anyone willing to break international law to support a tyrant deserves imprisonment.

And i hope they get exemplary punishment.

Well you can't find Satoshi Nakamoto but you can surely find dozens of such threads if you use the search box provided in the right top corner of your screen.

Of course you can find him, just look here: satoshi.
He has just been absent for a while. Oh and this forum is his too...

It seems like you are surprised. What do you expect governmental media to do? You want them to say that people are rising against our best and wealthiest country in the world? In Authoritarian countries governmental media are designed to create a good picture of the country in the head if its audience.

I was not surprised, just stating the facts. People in this forum are unaware the traditional media is entirely controlled by the government, including private owned media. The last radio that gave voice to the opposition was shut down that day. Censorship is now complete in the airwaves of Caracas.
3565  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: antminer shows no chains on: May 02, 2019, 06:09:09 PM
He is wrong. You do NOT install Braiins OS by booting from SD Card, its never "flashed", you are simply running from the SD card. Next version of Braiins OS will allow actual installing (into the NAND flash of the controller), but this feature is not available yet. If he takes out the card Braiins OS is gone.

To "flash" Braiins OS in the current version, you need a working factory firmware with ssh access (no 2019) and a separate computer to either use the web UI firmware upgrade method or the much safer python script that makes a backup before flashing and can always be reverted back.

When the next Braiins OS version comes out he will have an option in the UI to actually "Flash" it into the NAND controller, then he can take out the sd card, move the jumper back and it will still boot Braiins OS.

If Braiins OS is working then its best to just use it. It doesn't matter if it says S9 or S9i as long as it works.
3566  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is urgent. Argentina is printing free money too on: May 02, 2019, 03:43:19 PM
The difference is that in the US they had capitalism and most of the Latin American nations drifted towards socialism. The problem with socialism is that although initially there will be a lot of positives (such as eradication of poverty and free healthcare), very soon the government will run out of money. In case of Venezuela, the petroleum revenue was not growing in line with the growth in the population. Also, the socialist government in Venezuela seems to be very corrupt, even when compared to the other socialist regimes (such as Cuba and DPRK).

No, in the case of Venezuela the State was increasing spending in parallel to the oil price, in addition to severe corruption. This had nothing to do with population growth (which btw, it has shrunk due to massive emigration). Worse than that, they got in huge debts betting that the oil would keep going up.., so not only were they spending more than the oil income, they were spending more than oil income PLUS loans...
3567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin is the world's 3rd strongest currency on: May 02, 2019, 01:12:05 PM
There is one thing i actually ponder on, and that is how bitcoin as a digital coin, that is not globally accepted, attain a height like this. For the fact that it can be ranked third as the world's strongest currency,  certainly means that there is a future for the coin and cryptocurrency at large.

Because of the opposite. It IS globally accepted, by the people, even if some foolish governments are against it, because they can't "control" it, or tax it. This is like the mp3 revolution, an audio format that wasn't meant to be (standalone), yet people on the internet started using it that it became a worldwide phenomenon that even hardware players were made.

A decade and a half ago, would you have asked if mp3 was the world's strongest audio format? This is a roots movement, it won't be because governments accept it, it is in-spite of governments not accepting it. The smart countries will find ways to coexist with this new reality, the foolish ones will try to oppose it until they are overwhelmed.

Venezuela crisis: Dozens injured in clashes in Caracas

A woman was shot dead and dozens injured in the Venezuelan capital Caracas on Wednesday, in clashes between opposition supporters and pro-government forces.

Meanwhile, Mr Guaidó called for a series of strikes to force President Nicolás Maduro to relinquish power.

But Mr Maduro - who is backed by Russia, China and the leaders of Venezuela's military - has refused to cede power.

There were reports of gunfire in the city, and a local NGO, the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict, said a 27-year-old woman had been shot dead during a rally in the opposition stronghold of Altamira.

At least 46 people were injured in clashes between opposition supporters and the security forces.

This woman wasn't just shot in the head, she was beaten and kicked by Maduro's supporters, not unlike what this video shows in my previous post.
3569  Other / Off-topic / Re: Something Faster Than The Speed Of Light on: May 02, 2019, 04:41:51 AM
Perhaps we have not yet discovered anything faster than light.
Maybe a fast neural net does not know that.
So far there is nothing faster than light.
The most important question is how we can take advantage of this speed

Tachyon particles are faster than light...

There is also the quantum entanglement phenomenon, where a pair of particles instantly affect each other no matter how far they are... A future communications device could come out of it, or perhaps computers with speeds able to break the limitations of current electronic/photonic technology.
3570  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: antminer shows no chains on: May 02, 2019, 04:23:07 AM
ok i install the braiins os by following instructions on site now the red light stays on and i cant access miner , should i try flashing with a previous firmware for s9i?

Do you mean boot from the SD card by moving a jumper? That procedure is not permanent, you can simply take the sd card out and move the jumper back, and its like nothing ever happened. It doesn't "install" it, only boots from it. If you can't boot Braiins OS using this method maybe your miner isn't supported, i don't really know what the difference is with S9i vs S9, i have only seen and worked with S9.

When you boot with Braiins OS you should try to find the miner IP again, its probably using dhcp, it won't use a previous configuration.

Ukraine plans to impose a tax on the operations with cryptocurrencies

Well, good luck enforcing that... I think that's a stupid idea, too easy to circumvent. But i'm not surprised yet another country wants to do this. Politicians just don't know what to do with crypto, they can't figure it out because they haven't used it.

You could, maybe tax sales and property, but taxing bitcoin is akin to taxing some game money, ie WoW gold or such. And they just can't possibly track every single wallet out there, much less every single altcoin wallet out there.

Its just too easy for people to keep "hidden" wallets, should they be forced to "declare" a wallet for taxation. Politicians need to get a clue on what they are dealing with here. Taxing the virtual money itself isn't going to work to Ukraine or anybody else. My country for example pretends everyone should use a State owned exchange (so the fee includes the tax, and their arbitrary exchange rate)... Yeah, right.
3572  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin can be gainful for a deplored economy. on: May 02, 2019, 02:58:39 AM
Experts at Goldman Sachs Zack Pandle and Charles Himmelberg said that advanced monetary standards and, specifically, Bitcoin, can turn into a reasonable methods for installment in nations where conventional cash isn't adequately given.
If they are talking about countries who currently have hyperinflation like Venezuela then they might be wrong about it, you see in places just like this even any foreign currency is affected when use in that country, just by having a foreign currency doesn't mean it will be immune to inflation in that country. You see inflation here affects two things aside from the devaluation of money you will also encounter the increase in price for goods which is common when the supply runs out. So this means even let say the US Dollar is backed by its country it doesn't mean that it's value for that country will be the same all through out. Their statement might be partly through but it cannot be applied to all countries' respective economies.

Rising prices of imported goods in foreign currency are the result of supply and demand, not inflation. Few people import, therefore they can rise the prices given the demand is actually increasing, due to the shortage of local production. Of course all importers will tell you stories about customs, taxes, and the hyperinflation eating their profits so they need to rise prices to keep their business afloat, but in the end is lack of competition thanks to a socialist (distorted) economy.

Bitcoin is a deflationary currency, as a main currency it should only be used in countries willing to adopt Austrian economics. The USD like most fiat currencies manipulated by governments IS inflationary, because the main stream Chicago school of economy (and Keynesians) teach how fearful deflation is. So they actually try to induce a steady inflation of about 2% per year by various means, including printing more.

Truth is deflation is good, when combined with Austrian economics. Austrians do not let bubbles form in the first place, therefore there are no crashes. All these bubbles are the result of fractional reserve banking, which Austrians ditch in favor of full reserve banking. Yes Maduro kinda gave the order to do that, but without a free economy and the rest of the Austrian measures, its useless, specially within a socialist economy.

Most people don't even understand how a full reserve bank works so I'll explain it to you quickly: If you open a savings account, they have to keep 100% of your money, they cannot loan it to anyone unless you move it to a special loaning account. Unless you do that, the bank should charge you a fee for keeping all your money in their vault, instead of you getting interest rates. If you move your money to the loaning account, you understand the risk that you might lose it should the bank goes bankrupt. Also while being loaned, it won't be available to you until the loan ends or is cancelled due to other factors. Done correctly you should never lose any money but instead earn a bit of interest. In Venezuela something very similar is called "plazo fijo" (term deposit). Of course this would also need changes to bank law and their operations. I think many bankers don't even truly know how this system works, but they should take a look.

While the main stream economics want you to take debts to invest which in turn creates profit and growth and more people take more debt, etc; Austrians want you to save your money first, and then you invest from your own savings instead of getting in debt. And you will by your own motivation, knowing your money is actually increasing its purchase power everyday, so you will only spend what you must, and keep the rest.

This is very much like contrasting the Chinese and American cultures. A Chinese would rather spend 15 years living in a humble house and saving to buy a new one, while the American would take a loan get the new house now and then spend 30 years paying it back... Yes the Austrian way is "boring" and slow, but firm and solid. While the alternative is the roller-coaster that makes bubbles and crashes.

Take only Bitcoin but don't implement Austrian economics, and its not going to help much. That is not too different from adopting another country's money.

It looks like large miners are using PPLNS scheme timing to get more (or get a bonus).
I don't know what their game here is.

They think they are "gaming it", but they are losing more than simply always staying on the pool due to ignorance, lack of management, or both.
3574  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The ugly side of Bitcoin on: May 02, 2019, 12:56:53 AM
We all know how beneficial it is for us to have a currency like Bitcoin , something that we can use without any interference and without any middle man, but there is always a problem with things that we usually unsee because of the huge benefits it earns to us and this time it's environmental pollution.
Bitcoin as we know it requires mining to continue it's supply , but the thing is mining consumes Tons of energy and thus makes it harder for us to cope up with the stress it is putting up on the environment.
Pollution, global warming  Bitcoin is causing all this , one might argue that it won't be necessary after a while but what about right now ? It's hurting the environment and we have no stable solution for this.
Shouldn't we focus on this too ? Rather than other things ?

No because this "problem" does not exist and will correct itself by free market forces...

Sooner than later it will be too expensive to mine using energy from the grid in ANY country, even mine. Then the last miners will be those who invested in renewable energy and therefore have free electricity from nature.

For that reason the best thing you can do, is do nothing.
3575  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: antminer shows no chains on: May 01, 2019, 11:05:06 PM
No need to make such drama, just boot Braiins OS from a micro SD card. Next version will allow installing from the SD card itself into the controller's NAND, once that is done there is a procedure to return back to factory firmware.

Of course if i were you i would stay with Braiins OS.
3576  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Has China’s authority classified cryptocurrency mining? on: May 01, 2019, 10:02:23 PM
Hey, just because Mao called the intellectuals to come forward to criticize his government, and then later enraged by their comments imprisoned them, doesn't mean the actual government ruled by the same communist party would do the same, would they?  Wink

Venezuela was a little different. The gov did made people register, under the threat that those who didn't register could have their equipment seized later.

Actually the police was already seizing equipment before this, not because it was illegal (it wasn't) but because "they just could" (there is no rule of law operating). After this registry was completed, the (illegal) practice continued so you are never safe. Not just because the de-facto government lied, but because they are unable to stop corrupt police or military from extorting, and even kidnapping people they believe to be wealthy to pay ransom.

They sacked the guy who promoted the first registry and there is now a second in control of an institution that is supposed to regulate "crypto activities". Miners are supposed to get a license, which details were never disclosed. I don't even know if that is working anymore...

So you are in limbo, at risk, unless you are really close to someone in power (perhaps sharing profits) so when the police/military do come to extort you, a call to the right person would make them back off. Not sure if Russia is the same, but China is dangerous to even think of doing that, yet some do...

oh, and i took those three steps in your reply and still don't know the command to make it run

Well that falls into bfgminer's thread, but you should read the included readme or check it online before asking questions there.

A quick glimpse seems to indicate you are supposed to run like it this:

bfgminer -o http://pool:port -u username -p password

Do read the documentation for further details.

if they have 1 EH and brought it here, my guess is ramp up would not be very long and hmm I bet we would find blocks a lot more often with that much hash.

Thats easy, using Kano's calculator 1EH (1000PH) it shows:

Pool Average Time per Block:
27286.475sec
=
7hr 34min 46sec
Pool Average Blocks per Day:
3.1664 blocks
=
39.58004856 BTC + t2

Wouldn't we all love getting paid 3 times a day? Who needs pps pools with that... But oh, how fool the whale miners are...
3579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Popularity Soars in Argentina Due to Mass Inflation on: May 01, 2019, 07:52:25 PM
It is amazing if ever Argentina is the first country who make bitcoin as a main currency. And if happen in the near future other country will inspired by Argentina. It can make the country progressive and more accessable in terms of payment system and good investment venture that all netizens of that country will benefited.

This will not occur unless the country also adopts Austrian economics and boots all the chicago/keynesians that keep misleading things there.

Simple reason is they FEAR deflation, due to their flawed thinking. There is no way a country would adopt any deflationary currency without also going full Austrian. For starters, go with full reserve banking and close the central bank, you don't need that anymore once you adopt Bitcoin AND full reserve banking.

The only reason things are worsening AGAIN, is because AGAIN a fool politician gave the order to print more money. Never ever again, separate money from State or else sooner or later it will happen.

But as you might have guessed some things are so entrenched you might even need to change the constitution and banking laws, among many other things. You should invite the Spanish Jesús Huerta de Soto, a living Austrian, to give advice to Mauricio Macri. Then you could save the country...

While Maduro's people attempted to keep the population from demonstrating at gun point in some places:

Socialism and women: Obey or get beaten...

Photographer shot by Maduro's national guard for covering the events:

Another journalist wound in the face:

Here the "tactical police squad" (FAES) detains (kidnaps) a demonstrator. Often they are thrown in prison without ever seen a lawyer for years, they do the same to foreigners, journalists, even people returning from work. They just don't care as they feel above the law. There is no rule of law in this country, only the rule of Maduro and his people.
