I would like to use a PPLNS but with our need sometimes to take hashrate down for periods of time the 5nd would hurt, PPS just pays when they are up. It depends on your business model of what pool you go with, I'm sure as expansion happens it would be possible to move some of the more stable miners to a PPLNS.
The 5Nd doesn't hurt, since when you take it down, you still get rewards for 5Nd after you stop mining.

The PPLNS here simply spreads the payout over 5Nd - the 'same payout' as any PPS pool only keeping 0.9% (which doesn't exist)
Of course the total will vary a lot, but long term the total is higher here.

The 5Nd means there's LESS variance here than say on slush PPLNS, when you switch off and on your miners.
However, the higher (luck) variance here is due to the pool size.

A simple way to look at it is, if you drop 100TH for 24 hours, then your payout over 5Nd is expected to total less by 24hours times 100THs, but instead of it dropping for 24Hrs to zero, it reduces the next 5Nd of rewards, so the variance caused by the outage is minimised.
And yes this is correct, however when you talk to an accountant and say "on PPS we will submit this many shares and get this much based on that" and "on PPLNS we might be down during that good luck period and not actually hit full speed during the 5nd" which would they prefer.

In the past week if all machines were put here we wouldn't have hit the total 5nd based on our required up times and based on the luck / blocks found we would have earned less than PPS. I'll see about doing a hash rate split and testing this to see which we earn more on.

Your problem is time. If you do this for a one or two year period, you will quickly find out you were earning less ₿ using PPS. If this pool had a much higher hashrate you could evaluate this in months or even weeks (if it reached exahash levels). This is the irony that the whale miners don't get, by using PPS in the larger pools they are earning about 4% less, and they could reduce that by moving into the pplns pool.

If you do have 1 EH at your disposal, go ahead and test for a month or so...

As for the 5nd, again its time. You are always earning the same, but instead of having sudden zero to full earnings, you get a gentle slope. Its all designed for you to stay longer. Stay long and you will reap the benefits, pool hoppers lose more. That is why you can't see the results in 1 day or 1 week. Think of it as inertial momentum from a flywheel thats gets power from electricity, disconnect it and it won't stop immediately. But to start it from zero takes time as its heavy to move...

Venezuela: Guaidó pledges end of Maduro era in militaristic video

Flanked by soldiers near Caracas airbase, opposition leader promises liberation

A military uprising appears to be under way in Venezuela after the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, posted a video of himself flanked by soldiers, promising to end the rule of President Nicolás Maduro .
Venezuela opposition leader claims coup is under way – live news
Read more

“The moment is now,” Guaidó said in a three-minute speech, apparently filmed just before dawn on Tuesday near La Carlota, the main military airbase in Caracas. “We are going to achieve liberty and democracy for Venezuela.”

Standing beside Guaidó as he spoke was Leopoldo López, an opposition politician who is meant to be under house arrest.

As the video ended, the camera moves to show a few dozen troops lined up, apparently in front of armoured troop carriers.

This morning we were awaken by news of a military uprising. There is A LOT of info on social media, not much (nearly nothing) in traditional media...
Guaidó is near a military base in Caracas, with at least 2000 armed people, both military and police (even from the secret police) who have rebelled against Maduro. While there was a planned massive demonstration for tomorrow, today surprisingly this event occurred, they are calling civilians to go there as well, as they have taken military control in the area.

The de-facto regime has been taken by surprise, apparently sending some military units who have been seized by the rebels, wearing blue ribbons.
Perhaps starting today, Maduro's regime will finally come to an end. But this is only starting...

Internet has been severly censored since early morning, this "firewall" has often failed in the past when traffic is massive (ironic isn't it?) and currently it has failed again letting censored sites open again (i do have my own countermeasures to avoid censorship).

This is ongoing news...

3584  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NSA Recommends Dropping Phone Surveillance Program on: April 30, 2019, 04:14:36 AM
NSA is going to be recommending the ending of a program that collects information (such as metadata) regarding your phone calls and texts (if you live in the US) They're going to be doing this as they cite that the program is a logistical nightmare to attempt to control, as new laws have been passed by lawmakers to ensure proper privacy compliance

They're saying that for the amount of legal compliance necessary to continue the program, it will just be better to shut it down.

I personally don't know if this is just a publicity stunt, and the government is just going to continue spying on the American people. Though I do hope this isn't such, and that these programs slowly come to an end as people notice that they really don't do more than invade the lives of innocent Americans.

So....

Translating....

When they said they had the program, it wasn't really working, but now that they say they don't need it and it's working properly, it's working perfectly?

Oh it does work all right, but compliance with US laws is unrealistic at best. Look at it from the technical point of view, how are you going to filter out calls from Americans? all you can do is perhaps look the other way or start a complicated unscalable filtering process.

The NSA has no choice but to record it all, and when the other agencies request the data they better check first they won't be using information that was not supposed to be recorded in the first place...

You cannot black/white list people, because if a call from a foreigner occurs, its valid (at least a half of it) to record it. You also cannot do it by location, because the foreigner might be already in the US territory, and the American abroad.

I doubt the surveillance will really stop, it might just become more undercover, as originally intended. They have to record all, then try to classify that mess. I bet they have some alliance with the world's largest data mining company, Google. I wouldn't be surprised they are using AI to sort all that info out before it becomes useless.
3585  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Whatsminer M21 Available for Pre-Order (~August) - 31TH:1860W on: April 30, 2019, 03:27:00 AM
But the M20s has a great efficiency, that we are waiting for you to confirm with your review to us. So whats is this about an M21s? Is it the same efficiency as the M20s but smaller? The "plain" M21 is 60t/w vs 48ish the M20s promises.

I don't think the Bitmain miners are worth it at least while new (overpriced), especially now that they won't let you ssh into them... Later, perhaps with lower prices, and better news about getting back into ssh, maybe. But with MicroBT at least you don't have to worry about that, and you can probably squeeze it a bit more efficiency something you wouldn't be able to do with the crippled Bitmain units.
3586  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Terminus R606 up to 1TH quiet miner, available for pre-order on: April 30, 2019, 01:15:39 AM
Trick with fans is size, its not the only thing but its important. Ceiling fans are among the quietest because they can move good quantity of air spinning slowly. But if your room can accommodate either a 40" ceiling fan and a 52" ceiling fan, the larger one will be quieter to move the same amount of air than the 40" one. Of course this thing doesn't even get hot to begin with so i guess its fine with 80mm. You can typically see those in cheap cases, PC PSUs or cpus.

There is also the design of the blades, the number of blades, etc. Perhaps if you test the unit in a place with 40°C ambient temperature, we could know better how fast they need to be running to keep things in check, or if faster/larger fans would be needed.

Just don't handle your 100₿ bitcoin wallet from your phone... That should remain in a cold wallet.
In your phone just keep what you are likely use for the day, like, you know, an actual day to day wallet.

If someone wants to inspect you, they can do it with a decent professional digital camera, not the gimmicks on smartphones. Like a sniper, they can take a look from so far that you wouldn't have the slightest idea (an actual sniper scope would to just fine). There is also the chance that the surveillance cameras could be used, now that there are 4k or better in the market, and definitely have better lens than a smartphone camera, many can be moved remotely and zoom at you on command.
3588  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 30, 2019, 12:52:09 AM

Two days ago we had 12 hours blackout, its getting a little better, but still there is a deep problem in the dam that needs urgent addressing: Replace of two giant transformers (it has 3, only the last one is working) only a company from Germany has them, but they don't recognize the usurper so there is no way for this to be purchased. Unless the Chinese can cook something (since they have nearly all world technology, copied or not...).

Is there no way they can buy a second-hand transformer from a third party?

As an aside, is there any chance of Maduro stepping down and making way for someone who hasn't antagonised the world?

Everyone wishes that, except the small group that is profiting from corruption or the few remaining followers who still blindly believe in them.

As for the dam, I'm guessing that the Chinese could build them (they just take anyone's money), but given the current debt with them, it seems unlikely. Besides they would need to custom manufacture them, as those things are very rare worldwide. I think companies from Germany and Japan can provide them as well. They call them "auto transformers" and are probably related to the 730kv line

Can confirm this is working, have done the same process to a T9 (NOT T9+) that was shutting down because of overheating.

Flashed the T9 to the S9 Dec 5 firmware, then flashed brains OS over the top. Boots and runs, and you can control the chip speed and voltage, but as wolfen said you get no temp readout and the fans run at full speed.

Would be nice to get temps, but I suspect the braiins guys would need a T9 to test/tweak.

This particular machine has been problematic, and prone to overheating, so I wanted to underclock and undervolt it, but bitmain won't release AB firmware for the T9, and the old trick of going into minerAdvanced.cgi never did anything, it appears to be working for this one. I have it at 600Mhz and 8.5V

Hmm this reminds me of the R4, but just like the T9s, some R4s have different controllers where everything just breaks. Still good finding.
Did you try forcing the fan speeds slower?

and it appears that the whale is gone after a little over 2 days. pool is back down to 30 ph --- but alas, we got no blocks during the whales time here Sad

It doesn't matter, every little push gets us closer. At 30PH a block should be found every 10 days on average. Even if we take a month or two without blocks, then another month or two will get us twice the usual number of blocks. It always averages in the long run.

Those who can't manage themselves will go to PPS pools while losing more in fees and get less reliability (orphans) and less security (pool owned wallets).
that being said, I wish I had put 5 miners on kano.is a lot sooner than I had - the pool had some really good months that I missed out on. Smiley

See? What would you do with the money if you had those "good months"? Absolutely nothing, all the extra should have been kept to pay the bills in the bad months.

Of course building a buffer takes time, and its harder for larger operations, but its not impossible. Also you should start investing in renewable energy.

Take into account that if you don't make this buffer yourself, you are trusting the pool operator to do it for you, in addition for taking higher fees (ie 4% vs 0.9%). AND, hopefully no one will ever "hack" those wallets the pool operator is keeping with everybody else's money. Of course i know most PPS users are willing to forfeit their earnings if such "rare" event occurs (that would probably close the pool), but then you are also risking to close your operation by depending on the external party.

You "could" slowly move from PPS to PPLNS, a few miner units at a time...

Are you able to do your own electricity generation? For example solar panels on your roof.

In the UK and USA, having solar panels and generating your own electricity (and selling the excess back to the grid) is quite common. It decentralises electricity generation and makes it less likely a bad actor can harm the entire country by hacking the grid.

Some people have small gasoline generators, and a few places have the large ones.

Sadly no, renewable energy doesn't have much traction. Gasoline being nearly free doesn't help... (Same reason we would be the last country on earth to see an Electric car).

I saw one of those small gasoline generators the other way for about 2 million bolivares. Remember the average wage here is 20 thousand bolivares (per month)... 1 USD would be about 6000 bolivares by now (we will see tomorrow), 1 bolivar is about 3 satoshis.

But Americans have a problem with this, don't they? Why didn't Pangolin lower it to $799?

Well i guess it costs the same as the M10 but is a little more efficient, but not as nice as the M20S. I was thinking an M20S with two or one board would do the trick instead...

Lightning Labs have just released the Lightning App for desktop.
Its the first mainnet application of the Neutrino light client, so will be very interesting to see how it performs.

I'm going to check this out soon. Does it need (or bring) a Lightning node? and so, does it need a bitcoin node running as well?

IIRC Neutrino can use a pruned Bitcoin node, and since it says "Neutrino based" i guess that would be logical, unless its bundling the whole thing.

No country in the world would accept Bitcoin for paymens of goods, services, or whatever. We barely see local stores accepting it as payments, what makes you think a sovereign state would accept Bitcoin?

Because Maduro needs to keep the "elite" happy, by elite I mean his entire crooked cabinet, the armed forces, and the paramilitaries, you know, the people that are keeping him in power. "Feed the people"?, nice joke, if only that were one of the main objective of Maduro's regime, I'm pretty sure that's at the bottom of his priority list right now.

Well so far the Russians have been more than happy to accept our gold as debt payment. Pathetic, given that gold was our reserves, and Maduro spends them illegally, simply because he needs authorization from the Legislative to use them but he doesn't recognize other branches of power that don't obey his whims.

The Chinese are getting crude oil as payment, but they are not giving us any loans anymore, the debt is too tall and the Venezuelan economy too bad.

Putin knows a thing or two about crypto, so its a bit rare he isn't accepting debt payments in bitcoin, perhaps when the next one due October comes we will know (or never) how it is that Maduro is paying debts back to Putin. We know for sure the last one was paid in gold, a plane came and all...

3600  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: April 28, 2019, 01:05:00 PM
It is looking ok. You have to repeat this calibration with each of your 20 units, all 60 Asic boards separately. Don't just blind copy the settings because they are not identical, every Asic board responds differently. Make sure to inspect your PSU and connections for excess heat so they don't die prematurely.

Ensure good airflow around the miner.

Overclocking tends to shorten the lifetime or the miners. Make sure you are fully aware that some might get damaged by doing this. It is your own responsibility to be careful with each voltage increase.
