testnet is resilient against spikes up in hashrate - unlike mainnet it allows lower-difficulty blocks to be found after 10 minutes

Hat mich gefreut euch Münchner kennenzulernen Danke für das Loft! Leider kann ich die Forenaccounts teilweise nicht den Gesichtern zuordnen

ok, sorry i mixed that up. the qr code is generated client-side in JS as it should. nothing to see here, move on.
|
|

does that mean you send the private key over the net - unencrypted - to a third party just to create a qr code? or did i miss something?

/bump already looking forward to this. we expect some guests and i can promise exciting discussions

With bitcoin your biggest concern is security and you tend to invest to that, and not that much to front-end.
we should just declare bootstrap as a de-facto standard for bitcoin web apps and make that a best-practice and a requirement for a security certificate. i am actually serious about that. it looks good enough and it makes developers spend more time on where it matters. for some users it could also be a good experience since this is the de-facto default UI everyone knows from other sites.

there could be a scheme like that with hierachical deterministic paper wallets, where you build up a paper chessboard, put 4 smaller chessboards on top, 16 on top, 64 on top... etc. then you can pick small denominations from the top and spend them, or the largest sheet from the bottom and spend all of them.

It is moot to speculate on a good naming since the decision is already made, but here are some more name ideas in case someone wants to set up another bitcoin organisation and to get them out of my head i have to write them down. sorted by seriousness: Bitcoin benefactors Bitbenefactory Bitcoin union Bitcoin confraternity Coinfraternity Bitcoin syndicate Bitcoin union Bitcoin workshop Bitcoin collective Bitcoin consortium (maybe same semantic problems as foundation) Bitcoin association (same..) Bitcoin pool (well, not a mining pool) Bitcoin endowment Bitcoin amalgamation/conglutination (ok... its getting ridiculous) what is aparently bothering a very vocal minority is the word "The" in the name. Simply "Bitcoin Foundation" would sound much more humble and innocent. That said, i think its really great to see some seriousness in the Bitcoin world, which is really needed. Also having a solid model for funding the development is needed and will enable long-term prosperity for the whole industry. I could criticize some minor details about the genesis of this organisation but i leave that to others who apparently like to spend a lot of time in this thread

As to the name... come up with a better one that (a) doesn't sound lame and (b) doesn't sound ominous to other forum denizens.
"Bitcoin Advocacy Group", "Bitcoin Supporters Group", "Bitcoin Development Group", "Bitcoin Club" are some that just came out of my mind, and I don't see these names misleading people, nor do they sound presumptuous to me. I'm sure more creative people, with some time of thinking, could definitely come out with something better. I have to admit i like these names better, and they fit the official description better than "The Bitcoin Foundation". Since the statutes contain physical presence and meetings, and refers to state jurisdiction and the bylaws state: (a District of Columbia non-profit corporation) even a name like "Bitcoin Columbia" would be very fine. obviously i am prejudiced because of bitcoin-austria which has similar goals (minus the funding and fancy names)

i do feel 50% more paranoid now - if even security researchers get hacked, who can even say his hot wallet is secure?

was there any connection with the university IP and the wallet?

so there is some "proof" that ETHZ is not doing the mining but only acting as a relay and is being detected as the "origin" take a look at this address: http://blockchain.info/address/13XgASZP7N6pTMeyS5Sq8JeuCAkNzefnT7some blocks relayed by this host 82.130.102.160 generate output to this address. other blocks are more often reported as 50BTC so for me the conclusion is that this is just a very well-connected node, relaying block from regular nodes fast enough that they get them attributed. which makes sense from an academic point of view. propably they are trying to gather some metrics or maybe they are trying to do hashtable pollution of some sort which seems to be on their list of hobbies. so nothing to worry about.

I still think the foundation is a good thing, however it needs to be transparent and it needs to be limited in terms of how much ownership it can have on Bitcoin & central services/domains etc.
i agree. it would be good to have a clearly defined scope for the purpose of the foundation, and have a pre-determined schedule of reports to the members, individuals and corporate alike. paying gavin for his work is a good first step, though it should be transparent. if this model is successful other developers should be able to apply for grants for specialized topics. i am thinking for things like lightweight verifying nodes, alternative implementations..

i would rather postpone the decision about "what was change" and merge addresses to entities. once you see a transaction that signs multiple inputs at once, you can "assume" that it was one entity and assign change status retroactively

it would be nice to have email confirmations up soon.
also i would like to point out that that there should be a kind of non-profit umbrella organisation we as non-profit (bitocoin-austria) could join i was hoping the foundation would be something like that, but for us 500 btc is not really feasable. there are lots of people working hard to improve the bitcoin ecosystem for free and for ideological reasons and they are neither "early adopters" nor bitcoin businesses.

i am actually suprised goldmoney brings up bitcoin.
their business model is in itself fine but butcoin shows many weak spots in counterparty risk legal risk, confiscation (remember e-gold) online transactions, merchant integration
my guess is since many smart people are goldbugs they will eventually all diversify to bitcoin.
