3601  Economy / Reputation / Re: What to do if this happens? on: May 26, 2022, 01:29:09 PM
this brings me back to the discussion from your thread Why not tag all bounty hunters?, bounty managers need to make some changes and improve the way they run their campaigns.
For example, they can start by finding a more efficient way for hunter's authentification.

And since we seem to keep going somewhat off-topic I'll say another idea that came into my mind:
maybe se should start tagging bounty managers for poorly done job, negligence, not actually caring about impersonation or multi-accounts and so on?
The currently poor POA done in threads and Google sheets can be part of the list.
3602  Economy / Reputation / Re: What to do if this happens? on: May 26, 2022, 01:10:05 PM
sorry OP, maybe that would seem off-topic.
I want to see if it works?

Confirmed: it does work.
I've used the "tracked phrases" option in TryNinja's Telegram bot ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5248878.0 )
3603  Economy / Reputation / Re: What to do if this happens? on: May 26, 2022, 12:17:42 PM
it's probably a way that the OP and other bounty hunters can use to protect their accounts from people plagiarizing the POA. I'm sure the user name setting can be done. but does it work for other data like social media profiles or addresses?

We can try that: would you be so kind and write into a post the bech32 Bitcoin address from my profile?
If it works, my smart band will notify me.
(Of course, for an accurate test you should neither quote me, nor write my name)
3604  Economy / Economics / Re: Countries with the most expensive fuel | Greece's case study on: May 26, 2022, 12:05:40 PM
All of this matters a a lot, not common and great but it is definitely done by many people. So going to another nation for something cheaper there is a common thing.

That's correct. But I was not criticizing, although I somewhat think that this is how you see my post. No, I was explaining that Greece's overly high prices for fuel are not new and they're well known.
3605  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Questions about Mycelium accounts on: May 26, 2022, 11:26:52 AM
So what should I use if I have a paper wallet that I want to spend ?

I will start with telling that any device connected to internet is - to a certain degree - unsafe, hence I would not use Mycelium for the job if the paper wallet contains big money.

Option 1.
Now, if you still want to go on with Mycelium, you can try to import the private key either by scanning (add account -> advanced and more -> scan), either from clipboard (but you'll have ti write the private key into a notepad then copy it to clipboard and I really don't like using one more third party software) and then you can send those coins somewhere else (and since you should do this only with small funds if you do it with Mycelium, I'd say that it may be good to spend them all or send them all to a HD wallet you have the seed written).

Option 2.
I've looked up on the internet and you can go on the "Cold storage" path too, but I've never used it at all. If you search on the internet for "mycelium sweep paper wallet" you will find even YouTube movie explaining it (not mine, I cannot vouch for its accuracy).
But I've never used that so I can't tell; the difference should be minimal.
3606  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: help me decipher the text on: May 26, 2022, 10:15:32 AM
Maybe two of the words in the first row are liquid and prank?
Maybe two of the words in the second row are loaf and allow?

But yeah, compare with the wordlist from the first reply and see, maybe you get lucky.
And OP, I hope that you were smart enough to post less than half of the words if this is indeed a HD wallet seed or a brainwallet (if it's a brainwallet, then the words can be anything and in any number!)
3607  Economy / Economics / Re: CBN to stop circulation of Naira note on: May 26, 2022, 10:03:13 AM

I think that this is a "political declaration" i.e. lying/FUD.
I think that they just want to scare off the ones involved in crypto and those using paper money for evading taxes.

In most countries paper money is so vital it's not allowed by constitution (directly or indirectly) get phased out. And you know why? Because if they phase it out they will deny access to money to a vast segment of population (just because you cannot expect everybody have internet and electronic means of payment). I guess that's the same in Nigeria too.
So no, paper money will not go out of circulation that soon. Not so easy.

And about the double standards... as usual, I'll just say that it's a pity that you guys don't know better, it's a pity that you still have expectations from politicians to be fair. Get real!
3608  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What role are faucets and freebitco.in playing in BTC mining? on: May 26, 2022, 09:18:54 AM
https://freebitco.in, and other faucets claim to mint BTC

No, they don't. Some are lying, some you've misunderstood.
They are websites, they have wallets the owner and users (paying customers) transfer money to and winners/claimers are paid from.
No minting (what on earth is that for a PoW coin like Bitcoin?!), no mining.

Now, the estimated amount of BTC in circulation is 21 million, but with these other sources BTC mining here and there, are we not expecting more than the estimated amount? Because on a norm, before BTC gets minted, there must be a confirmation of transactions from miners just like regular banks do in the normal Fiat.

Every entity that mines (for real) bitcoin does it in the same way: hashing. Every mined coin comes from block rewards. There's no other way, hence the rules cannot be "bent" and your question relies on misunderstood things which you may have to ask one by one until you're good.

My question lies in the area of where these other faucets and freebitco.in get their coins from.

From transfers/transactions, like any wallet.
3609  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Should I buy BTC or DCA other coins? on: May 26, 2022, 09:11:09 AM
Now the question is, should I buy BTC (currently I don't have any BTC) or should I do DCA for ETH, SOL or DOT?

Short answer: stay on Bitcoin.

Long answer:

1. If you are not sure about a coin, then just stay away from it.
2. Altcoins are much riskier than Bitcoin.
3. The vast majority of altcoins don't survive or fall badly on long term, hence DCA may not make sense on them. Even ETH is expected to get in trouble after giving up PoW, but I didn't follow the story/drama much.

All in all, altcoins need you to be overly careful and probably overly lucky too, else you can easily end up in a loss.
Also, as said, if you want people advise you the altcoins, then maybe you should ask in Altcoin Discussion Cheesy

PS. This is just my logic, not a financial advice; please do as you think with your money.
3610  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Be careful what you plug your hardware wallet into your PC with on: May 26, 2022, 08:20:25 AM
Would you say it is safer to use a Hardware Wallet over Bluetooth connection rather than an unknown or new USB cable?

Imho it's not.
But really, it's not that difficult to buy a proper USB data cable from a proper shop if, by (some rather unlikely) chance, the one from the HW manufacturer got damaged or lost.
So why risk anyway?

And while I do agree that this problem with USB cables is a growing problem, I don't think that if you just buy a new cable there's a real chance for troubles.
So yeah, just stop using cables that aren't yours.

And no, I don't trust at all the wireless connections, no matter it's NFC, Bluetooth or WiFi.
3611  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My Diary of Hope on: May 26, 2022, 08:01:44 AM
I have given it quite a thought before reacting here.
I had this user on ignore for whatever reason. The fact OP has found some good things I've said and quoted them gives me a good feeling.

I can see that this topic is crying "merit me". Clearly. Still, he has put effort to it and I must admit, he has done a fairly good job.
I find it a nice compilation, I find it pretty useful fore newcomers, I find it good to be bookmarked.

Well done, OP. You're no longer on my ignore list and you'll get some merit too!
3612  Economy / Reputation / Re: What to do if this happens? on: May 26, 2022, 07:56:24 AM
To start, I suggest you stake your Bitcoin address on the thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0
If anything goes wrong with your account, signing the address will help you in case you have to prove ownership of the account.
If you ever see abuse like the one you mentioned, write here and expose what happened. For the red tag, you need to worry if it comes from DT members, and most reputed members try not to give an inappropriate red tag.

I don't know on what extent can this work, still, I've got and idea and I'll write it here:
Use trigger/notifier tool that will tell you whenever your "details" are written by the others. This usually goes for the username, but I it may work with address(es), twitter name or such. This way you can find out very quick if others impersonate you (willingly or by mistake) and you can react in an appropriate manner, complaining ASAP about that, hence keeping your name clean.
3613  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I am facing problem with dash electrum wallet. Someone please help. on: May 26, 2022, 07:22:53 AM
Special thanks to LoyceV and NeuroticFish for helping to find the possible ways of recovering fund.

I think that @nc50lc deserves a mention too, since he was the one with the idea of looking on the internet archive for the binary.

I am happy it has ended well.
And yeah, I guess that there aren't many who know that Electrum seed works only in Electrum. And most of those few are active (only?) here.
So don't be too harsh with the rest of the world. It has ended well, and that's what matters. (And yep, hats off to Loyce for having the time and patience for all the steps).
3614  Economy / Reputation / Re: My account removed trust.. on: May 25, 2022, 04:48:54 PM
Ariful07 Sent me a private message today which I would like to share. Maybe I Missed out some detail and other members can help me point it out.

He claims that he is innocent

I've got the same message. And I guess that it was not only the two of us receiving it.
Spamming with PM is not nice (I've threatened him I'll give red feedback for spam if he messages me again), and it shows that:

* he's desperate
* he doesn't really care about rules and being nice

This is how I see it.

I don't know the entire drama, but I trusted that at least some of those giving red feedback did check the proof.
Even more, your post shows pretty much all that's needed. So.. why you bother more than you should?!
3615  Economy / Services / Re: [OPEN]Bounty pool - Royse777 [Monthly payment in BTC] on: May 25, 2022, 04:37:46 PM
@Royse777: just to have it written down; I've switched today (to make sure it's on before tomorrow) the Avatar + Text to the other campaign, as we discussed in PM. Thanks.
3616  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Questions about Mycelium accounts on: May 25, 2022, 04:30:14 PM
Your question is not that clear. Mycelium wallet which is hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet is not a single address wallet, its seed phrase generates master private key which generates child keys. The child keys generates the addresses. Not just an address.

The question is clear and correct. One can add a new account and one of the options is "Single Address", which then is lost between many other options; I'll get back to that.
You can add separate accounts to Mycelium, which are not HD wallets. Some options are importing a private key or an address (clearly last option makes it watch only).

The wallet tells about "Single Address":
Quote
Generate a new random key pair to use as BTC or BCH SA account.
If I do that, a single private key is randomly generated and for that 3 addresses are offered, one legacy, one SegWit compatible and one bech32.

I will add that these "accounts" are unrelated to the original HD account and some of them (I don't know the exact list) may not part of the Mycelium backup (!) when one does that.
3617  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-03-16] Bitcoin rallies as new South Korean president vows crypto push on: May 25, 2022, 04:18:34 PM
https://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-crypto/the-team-that-predicted-terra-lunas-crash-four-months-ago/ - People still think it is a good thing that these people are controlling Alt coins that are questionable?

I honestly think some regulation is needed to eradicate "Pump n Dump" schemes and to manage and control it's impact on Bitcoin when it collapse. You cannot have people dumping Billion's of Dollars worth of bitcoins to protect "Pump n Dump schemes like this.  Roll Eyes

It's complicated. Such regulations should stop people do that if the centralized exchanges and the people using them wall under those laws. But:
* centralized exchanges can easily move to more lax countries
* people can benefit of the pseudo-anonymous properties of Bitcoin, mix them or convert to Monero
* people can simply switch to decentralized exchanges where there's no KYC and no rules

All in all, as usual, such laws will obstruct the law abiding citizen who may not start a pump-and-dump scheme anyway. And the ones planning schemes, have plenty of ways to go around the law.
3618  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I am facing problem with dash electrum wallet. Someone please help. on: May 25, 2022, 03:52:40 PM
LE: if you are OK with Linux, this fork/copy may also be of help: https://github.com/dashhive/electrum-dash
I quickly tried, but got errors. A quick search on what's going on with the Dash wallet showed shocking pictures of kids covered in blood. It looks like the Dash team is from Ukraine and decided to take the wallet offline.

What I've read on Reddit was that there are problems related to money, those images related to war, Electrum-Dash asking for money for war...
If you're interested, the story is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dashpay/comments/tojh3l/dash_electrum_what_happened/i2d51vn/?context=3

Edit: hopping between links on the internet archive I've managed to download an older Electrum-Dash: 3.0.6.3 4.0.4.1. Maybe it can help getting the private keys (I've updated the link too) :

Code:

Or you can use the starting address and get the files you want (if they work):

3619  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.0.9 wont open in Windows 8.1. on: May 25, 2022, 03:29:40 PM
The current plan is to get a new laptop get everything working there then upgrade old one.
Which windows should I get the new one with? 11 12? whats the freshest and best now?

As said, you can upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10.
I'll add that you can easily shrink one partition, install Linux Mint (sorry, purists, but I find it to be the easiest for Windows users) and put an Electrum there (copy the appimage and allow its execution).
I'll also add that you can write Tails OS onto an USB stick and boot from it.

...Maybe that Win 8.1 just no longer worth the hassle, you know...

PS. Latest is Win 11, if you really want to go on that path.
3620  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: An advice for Crypto Investing on: May 25, 2022, 03:13:05 PM
In addition to that;
 - invest only good coins, not shitcoins or hype.

This is an advice that can easily be wrongly interpreted, since it's very hard to know which are the "good coins".
* CMC and such mostly shitcoins listed
* Studying which coins are indeed good need a lot of time and, imho, at the point one knows if a coin is good, he's no longer newbie. I'll add that studying is somehow in the list already, but most don't have the patience for it
* Altcoins can easily die off even if they've started as a honest and good project, just because the team was too small and life things broke it apart (although the usual reason is greed).

Better advises can be:
* if you are not sure, stay away
* be extremely wary on altcoins and new services
* never forget that something too good to be true is usually bad business (scam)
* if you don't have patience to learn, stick with Bitcoin
