On the one hand they claim this is a layer7 attack then they show this prolexic report, which is about layer 3-4. If they have an attack vector for an application layer attack why spend the resources for a expensive network layer attack?
It still smells fishy to me.

If nothing else they are shutting down their service when under attack to prevent "lag"
Which is the only responsible thing to do. A ddos attacked market racking up lag isn't a normal market. Thus the only responsible way to fight back is to turn off the market for the time being till the attack passes. At which point allow people to trade normally once again.

If this really is a layer7 attack it might be able to be sustained indefinitely. And what then?

Lol, you people need to stop trolling with Gox going down "indefinitely." This has happened like 20 times before, and its already back up. This is like, completely and utterly boring and normal.

That's why it's called back to normal in the bubble autonomy chart.
3622  Economy / Speculation / Re: Without mtgox the price will be under $100 within an hour on: April 21, 2013, 07:02:17 PM
Give it some months and BTC will go to single digit we will still have no idea where price is headed to with or without the help of a dysfunctional MtGox.

Fixed it.

Not really, this today pretty much sealed the deal for below 50.

No... it didn't? The price didn't even touch $100 on any major exchange and has rebounded since then.

A sealed deal isn't a done deal. Wait a week or so.

Well, I doubt they are claiming today is April 11th.

Oh, in that case, pretty solid arguing folks!  Cheesy

What kind of sell off do you think they are trying to prevent though? There have been quite a few ~BTC5k sell offs in the past few days that recovered fine

Well according to this the ones significantly above 5k. I don't know any exact figures but if you look at the volume of the flash crash from the top there must have been some serious coin involved.

Never a dull day at MtGox HQ. The DDoSers must be milking every last chance before the big exchanges at CoinLab anf CoinSetter arrive. Once there is more than one big exchange, DDoS of any one will have much less effect.
Can't mention the DDOS scapegoat enough?
They simply pull the plug if a selloff is on the horizon.

Nobody except the suckers who can't get out believes it any more.
I can't agree that a sell off was on the horizon. There was certainly a downtrend for the last 20 or so hours though, but it was gradual enough.

They might have better tools of predicting that though.
A watchlist for the largest BTC holdings and when they log in?
I don't really like coming up with stuff they can potentially do, but just taking their word for granted isn't either for me.

Yes, your signature that claims to be ASIC Hostile while proposing to build an ASIC mining device.

You are a well balanced individual, for sure.  People should definitely listen to you.

Don't you have some re-flow ovens to watch instead of flamebaiting in some pointless drama?

UPDATE: This again appears to be another strong DDos attack. We are working hard to overcome it and will update when possible. It's currently 2am in Japan so please forgive us if our Facebook/Twitter updates are not as quick, though the team is certainly not taking any breaks. We're very much looking forward to implementing a much stronger solution very soon and will make an announcement to that effect once it's in place.

The price going down on other exchanges can simply be explained by speculators trying to take advantage. Here's how it works:

1. Speculators see MtGox down and assume the price will drop (due to panic, or whatever, especially if the downtime is for very long).
2. Said speculators stop their normal buying (speculators are always buying and selling to make profit from arbitrage or buy/sell order spread). This dries up "demand" on the exchanges.
3. Some speculators will sell, thinking they can buy back their coins later for cheaper due to the coming sell-off. This adds more supply and causes the price to start going down.
4. Whenever MtGox comes back up, or demand starts to look more natural, speculators rush to buy back their coins causing the price to stabilize.

No real panic or cause for alarm.

Except point 4. The last time gox went out during a fall it followed the other exchanges not verse visa.
No, the last time gox went out there wasn't a change at all. -.-
Not while they were out dummy. Why do you think it fell to 50@gox hmm?

But anyway, this is a clear indicator that prices on gox are artificially inflated and the real market thinks the price should be much lower.

Excuse me.... what? How is the gox price going up before the crash indicate that gox is over inflated.

It isn't since this is not what I wrote.
Gox is full of suckers who are too largely invested to be able to cash out. So their only hope is to pump more cash in while the Early Adopters spoon feed them. Everybody else is content with other platforms and real price discovery.
3638  Economy / Speculation / Re: Without mtgox the price will be under $100 within an hour on: April 21, 2013, 03:48:09 PM
It went from 120 to 128 to 125, last direction was down.

This downward move began before gox went down. Not if that were a coincidence.  Roll Eyes

false, mtgox was already down for a few minutes before bitstamp started falling, I know because I was watching

Just open bitcoinity an look at the gox chart, you'll notice a slight downward move after the pump to 128
Also there was lag before it happened.
