They're both a joke... But I almost hope Obama wins, just so the biggest collapse in history is at the hands of the socialist, rather than the faux-free market Romney and fake libertarian Ryan.
Hah... now that's a good point. Was going to vote Romney, now voting Obama!

Hello! I noticed that this thread is lacking Stefan Thomas's great loss of 7000 BTC. With this included, the new total is: 45669.33589602I'll come clean too, I got into this when CPU mining was the way (0.2 client). I don't want to go into details be here is the damage: 27,000 BTC New Total: BTC72,669.33589602 OMG I feel for you. Must suck knowing that you threw away at CEILING Half a million dollars Here... You may use my vomit bucket. Just please don't jump off a building! Nah, I am good. First thing I did was do a forensic data scan on the drive to look for fragments. I only found 5BTC literally. What it told me is that Bitcoin was getting serious and I told myself I am going to make a second go at it. BTC were worth .002 USD at the time so I didn't pay much attention. I'll buy that drive from you... well, if you haven't used it since then.

This isn't news to most of us, just FYI. They've been touting late October since the day they announced it was coming out. Whether they actually meet that release date, however, remains to be seen...!

I just realized that the 1/3 plan is missing a 4th element: Those of us who converted backlogged orders of prior-gen units to ASIC units. Where do we fall?

- how much is bit-pay worth as a business if sold today?
No idea. - how much would it cost financially to build a 'bit-pay' from scratch?
Not a clue. - how long would it take, to build a 'bit-pay' from scratch?
Couldn't tell ya. - how much manual labour (hours per day) is involved in running a 'bit-pay'? - and how much of that could potentially be automated?
You're asking me? But, that said, since you want wild speculation... $1.5M $200k (done right) 3 months 24 labor hours a day, 2/3 could be automated, but (obviously) with increases in capital outlay

I see my local B&N is one of the stores that will carry the magazine. We should try to buy all the stores out!
What for? To artificially inflate demand to force/encourage Matt/Vladimir to increase production resulting in increased cost and a total bust when the community suddenly decides to stop following this amazing plan of "buying all the stores out"? True, but if few sell they may yank them from the shelves before finding an audience. I'm most excited about the customers who find it on the rack and say: "WTF is bitcoin?, hmm, let's see.... Woah sweet!" Right, but if you buy the stores out, no one will see them on the rack...

One sold so far.
Yeah, it's a little underhanded. The person who ordered it agreed to pay the asking price, as it was "worth it" to him. Could he have bought it cheaper? Sure. Did he do the research to find out where he could get it cheaper? Probably not. Was that his fault? Yes. Would he have even known that these were for sale without the eBay posting? Maybe not.
I mean, people buy things in the store without coupons all the time. Does that mean the stores are underhanded for agreeing to sell them the item without pointing out that there is a coupon in today's paper they could have used? I don't think so... People are responsible for doing their own research and judgement to find the best price from a vendor they agree to purchase from.
On the other hand, that argument can certainly be taken too far and be applied to scams and cons. "Well, you should have read the fine text!" Those are obviously ethically wrong, so where do you draw the line?

I apologize for being vague, but some of the numbers I can't disclose, others we don't want to disclose because if we have to change them, it will cause more problems and yet more of those numbers we don't have a solid figure for yet. It's not a matter of wanting to be vague, but a matter of having to be vague to give you any information at all. It's either vagueness or nothing on some points unfortunately. People don't like radio silence, as evidenced by this thread and I'm trying to provide as much information as I can up to this point.
Right now, we plan on shipping a mix of all three types of units and yes, 1/3 from each amount we plan on shipping. Each class of mining hardware will be treated on it's own 1/3's balance sheet, not all lumped together. Does that make sense?
As far as what's "early" and what's "late" is going to depend on how many units we ship in the first batch. Like I said, we do not want to ship out just a handful of orders in the first batch and trickle them out. We want to ship a large quantity in the first batch.
Let me ask you (and by extension everyone else): Do you want us to ship out a small quantity of units first and then a larger quantity later (thereby giving the first shipments a major advantage) or hold on to the units until we have enough (I am still going over what the "enough" is, specifically) to satisfy a large portion of the first set of orders at once?
It was my impression that the overwhelming majority wanted the playing field to be as level as possible, thus holding on to the orders until there's enough to ship a reasonable quantity would be preferred over shipping out a handful of each right away? Is that thinking incorrect?
I would consider enough units to cover the first two days' orders to be sufficient for a first shipment (or maybe less), but without talking on what a "small quantity" and a "large quantity" means, it's hard to say what my opinion on that would be in direct relation to the way you asked the question. I know you have to be vague with the information you can release, so I tried to give a specific answer. A new question for you Josh - and BTW, I do very much appreciate you addressing questions and concerns promptly on the forum here - what will be the order for the 1/3 of converted orders? If I requested that my 5/25 order be changed to SC singles on 6/25, but then someone else requests their order from 4/25 be changed to SC singles on 7/25, who would be in front of who?

Coinabul - you make a compelling argument, but what is your normal price (i.e., no coupon code, since that cannot be relied upon?)
The coupon took off $8.6558. So basically, you're still cheaper either way for people going BTC --> Gold. Nice.

Do you pay for orphan blocks? If not, why do orphan blocks harm the pool's income? If so, how about just suspending payment of orphan blocks when the ASICs are released, then resuming them after difficulty settles back down?

Fair enough Josh, thanks for taking the time to respond with an explanation. I don't have a problem with BFL sending out test units at all - it just seemed unnecessary to me, but it certainly wouldn't hurt anything (other than people clamoring to try and be a tester, lol).
