3701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: HACKED THIS AFTERNOON! PLEASE HELP! on: April 18, 2019, 04:12:41 AM
I understand that my case was completely my fault (same pass on every site), and the reason is laziness, ignorance, or thinking it will never happens to you. I can't say the OP was hacked the same way that I was, anyway, it could be his fault or a website leaking his data: once they have access to an email address, they got access to all other sites, it doesn't matters if you have one password for each one.

I recommend the same, Windows is a spyware for itself, they are more busy spying on your biometrical data than on bringing security. I'm a total Linux noob, but I started using Ubuntu this year, learned GIMP to replace Photoshop, and I still need to buy a BricsCAD license to replace Autocad, to fully get rid of Windows for ever. I also recommend Linux Tails in a thumbdrive for important transactions.

Email access doesn't necessarily means they can get you, many sites ask you security questions before sending you a new password to your email, it depends on the site. If you are smart, you don't use a normal answer to the security question, but instead use random generated passwords as response for each different security question (you can store those in your password manager the same way).

If the site simply sends you a new password over email when you request it, that site has a very poor design. In this day and age, that's unacceptable. Some form of challenge should be expected. Often a weakness here is people using dumb simple answers to the security questions.

Windows has a LONG history of security breaches. Problem is, its full of holes, several undocumented. Once a malicious individual finds one, it can keep it to himself until the day he wants to use it. In open source, the same thing can occur, BUT  more often than not a thid party finds it and alerts the community. This cannot happen with closed software where its impossible to audit the code, or can only be audited by too small a limited group for a short period of time; meaning several bugs and flaws remain hidden for decades. The software development model (open vs closed) is one of the main reasons for insecure software, but its not the only one. It is however harder to secure closed since its harder to find the flaws than open.

There is no such thing as security by obscurity. A common cryptography tradition is: show your algorithm, so the community as a whole can audit it and give its blessing or find its faults. you know, basic science. Keep it hidden, nobody will trust it as its likely full of flaws. Software is the same.
3702  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: HACKED THIS AFTERNOON! PLEASE HELP! on: April 17, 2019, 11:54:32 PM
Big companies are being hacked everyday, and big chunks of private emails and passwords are being sold on the deep web. I lost some accounts (related to gambling websites and some social networks, not crypto), when Epic/Unreal was hacked some years ago. The damage was minimal anyway, but since then I have a different password for each website.

So, I would'nt make the OP completely responsible for the security, you can be hacked by the failures of third parties.

This is why its critical to never repeat passwords anywhere. First thing they do when they obtain password databases is to try them elsewhere. People can't remember a thousand sites passwords, but they can remember a very good password for a password manager running in a secure OS. Of course you should run a secure OS always (ie. Linux).

And your passwords shouldn't be trivial. Password managers have good random password generators, you should aim for (at least) 16 char long passwords using all char type groups first (ie. letters, numbers, caps, symbols).

I would advise the OP to download a live linux iso and use that in a thumbdrive and boot the computer from it. always have one of those ready.

Why, oh why is it only after people lose money that they start to pay attention? If you haven't been harmed yet, Do it now™; drop windows today, no more excuses.

Then, no "easy passwords", no repeating passwords. Careful with the 2FA, they are double edged swords, not universal protection. Keep major amounts in cold wallets, no excuses for that either. Exchanges learned that lesson the hard way, so should you...

So now its too late for (yet another) poster. Is it late for you the reader? Best OP can do now is report to authorities, probably will never see anything of it back again.

Remember this: When you use crypto, you are your own bank. Act responsibly.
3703  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Downgrade Antimner S9 , Remove security firmware on: April 17, 2019, 11:15:20 PM
And as we have witnessed various experiments (on S9s) using Braiins OS (which let you tweak speed and voltages in the UI), each asic board is unique. Some can take more, some can take less. They have different sweet-spot for maximum efficiency as well, there is no single value that works for every single board out there, each one has their own. Actually each chip should...

Normally that is correct, overclocking should make it less efficient, and downclocking more efficient. But you should measure for every tiny little adjustment you try and see if you are improving OR degrading efficiency. Also downclocking in general tends to give you lower temperatures and longer lifetime, those things go the opposite way with overclocking. Finally overclocking naturally demands more power than your current PSU may handle. AND, PSUs also have a sweet-spot for efficiency, usually around 60% load or less. Steer away from this ideal load and you will see more power per hash as result. Why of course some PSUs are better than others, and you can always try different ones.
3704  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain study on: April 17, 2019, 10:57:48 PM
The blockchain is, a special type of database. It is add only. Each time you add a register to it, special math is done against ALL the previous entries. Cryptography is used to do this, it protects the database from tampering. Nobody can ever change a previous entry, because the math would fail. This database should also ideally be decentralized, with several nodes participating, as opposed to a single server. This ensures the utmost redundancy and tamper proof operation, since its easier for a "hacker" get take control of 2 out of 3 nodes, than 50001 from 100000.

Therefore you can now imagine applications where this would extremely useful. Something you want to store data, and be impossible to alter it later or take down. ID documents and Election votes could be such examples.

Bitcoin uses it to ensure each coin is unique.
3705  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 17, 2019, 08:35:59 PM
I don't understand this. Is it that easy to get coke on a small plane and fly all the way to Southern United States? If I am not wrong, around 3,000 km of sea lies between Venezuela and the US. How can the planes go all the way without being detected?

And that's probably just a side dish, the military are making millions with contraband gasoline to neighbor countries to bother with drugs. But of course that is tightly controlled and perhaps is leaving some people out of that pie who then resort to drug trafficking.

Another more recent source of trafficking is precious metals. They are supposed to be handled exclusively by the State, and yet Venezuelan Gold and Coltan keeps showing abroad. Few days ago an abandoned container full of Coltan from Venezuela was found in a warehouse at some port in Italy i think. Oh, Coltan is a bit radioactive and it was unlabeled which infringed EU laws and only because of that we learned about it...

The corruption levels of this country cannot be expressed with words anymore, if not at the top, its one of the top 5 more corrupt places on Earth.

As for how drugs enter the US and EU, use your imagination. The cartels might take it to central America or the Caribbean islands first, then use small planes, boats, even submarines. Do remember the nephews from Nicolás Maduro were captured doing just that in Haiti planning to use a plane from State oil PDVSA to smuggle 1,700 pounds (800kg) of cocaine into the US.

Responding to the arrest, Cilia Flores accused the DEA of “kidnapping” her nephews as part of a plan to undermine the socialist government
Uh huh, everything is just an imperialist lie™ to remove a couple of nobodies from, nowhere as they didn't had any positions within the gov...
3706  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Downgrade Antimner S9 , Remove security firmware on: April 17, 2019, 08:04:43 PM
And what i meant is that we are going to have to do this by ourselves, without any help from Bitmain. We are on our own to break this, especially in current models that come already locked.
3707  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: The attack on Electrum servers seems to be over on: April 17, 2019, 07:45:38 PM
With Electrum server nature which allow anyone to connect (exception for blacklist known IP used for DDoS/malicious acitivty), it's over for now.

Attacker will find another way as long they have money and will to do it.

Out of fun these days i decided to run my own Electrum server, since i have a full bitcoin node synced and all... And i got one called "Electrum Personal Server", Lo and behold, it made the Electrum wallet work like Bitcoin Core or better. So if the public servers go down i could always use mine now. Next i could try running Electrumx or the other one, not sure which is better, but if i do, i would run it only over tor as a hidden service...
3708  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: On Bitcoin cycles on: April 17, 2019, 07:32:20 PM
It is common to see people claim that Bitcoin follows the pattern which was established in 2017. I understand why they want to think this way as it took less than a year to reach 20k by the year end starting with just 1k in January that year (at a certain point price had even momentarily crashed to 750)

But it is unlikely we are going to see that pattern right now. If anything, it feels more like we are back in 2015. In the first half of that year we were making lows (the last local low was in August at around 200) and only since the fall Bitcoin started to gain momentum in earnest. Then the halving came in July 2016 and the real run-away growth kicked off in a few months (in September 2016, to be exact) being somewhat postponed by the Bitfinex hack in early August

For that matter, things look more like we are following the 4 year cycle in which the Bitcoin reward halvings play an ever important role, and we are in the beginning phase of a new cycle. The implication is that we shouldn't be overly optimistic and expect too much of 2019 as it is more like 2015 rather than 2017 (and 2018 was our 2014). Indeed, things never repeat themselves but the overall outlook should be clear by now

So what are your thoughts?

I also think that the cycles are more closely related to the halvings, meaning every 4 years instead of every year. Things are starting to look a lot like the year before the last halving. But nothing is assured, external events may come and distort the market a bit at anytime, such as a banning here, a new regulation there, etc. Still things tend to go back on track, as designed.

Free to move, but still always returning back in place. Bitcoin is only maturing more and more and will tend to stabilize in the long term.
3709  Other / Off-topic / Re: Did you know you can ship poop using bitcoins? on: April 17, 2019, 06:27:01 PM
Wouldn't this classify as bio-hazard? Wait, are these stored under high pressure for them to pop when opened? Which package company would pick and move those without failing checks? And i fear for the poor people having to inspect those suspicious packages.
3710  Other / Off-topic / Re: Who's your favorite pornstar? on: April 17, 2019, 06:22:01 PM
I think that my favorite actress in spite of the years will always be Pamela Anderson, because she is a woman who in her time was really a bonbon. Although now my favorite day is Amaranta Hank, beautiful Colombian.

Did Pamela ever do Porn? I remember Home Improvement and Baywatch (mostly reruns) but not much after that.
3711  Other / Politics & Society / Re: USA EU TRADE WAR on: April 17, 2019, 06:11:25 PM
Protectionism is only going to hurt the USA, as more and more the global market will simply bypass the country. The only net effect that can come out from this, is less and less trade for Americans, a wealth source that will move elsewhere, hopefully emerging markets.

Trump is thinking 50+ years in the past, but the world simply doesn't function like that anymore. Sure it is an opportunity for the rest of us, but i don't think Americans will enjoy these policies for long, especially when they start feeling more and more the negative effects.

As for universal income, that is only a source of inflation. If everyone suddenly has 10k every month, what you used to do with 10k will now cost 20k. Instead of dreaming of earning money without working, worry more about having plenty of jobs (or entrepreneurial opportunities) so you have a better chance to work less for more.
3712  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: lost chain in hash borad of t9+ on: April 17, 2019, 05:18:27 PM
I just (physically) opened one yesterday but was puzzled at its funny reporting. Is this a common T9+ occurrence?

Physically they are just like the S9s, just 3 asic boards. Why does it report like this? Even with separate temperatures?
3713  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 March 4th, 2019 firmware experience? on: April 17, 2019, 04:57:07 PM
This is good to hear, and i have read people "rescuing" boards with failed sensors that otherwise work fine, by using BraiinsOS which has an option to ignore sensors or even fans. Normally you would need to spend more money by getting replacement boards (or repair them), but now you have this choice, as long as you keep away from 2019 firmware that would lock you out from your own miner.
3714  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitcoin Debit Card on: April 17, 2019, 04:41:07 PM
Do you think that bitcoin debit card link to our bitcoin online wallet will be implemented or is it possible to happen in the future? After all, we still want some improvement and some option for us to pay in some grocery stores or department stores that accepting cards right? And do you think this is helpful?

What you want is a payment processor, the most infamous being Bitpay, that bridges bitcoin into usd. They already provide credit cards and debit cards are just a variant of the same (and handled by the same companies anyway).

I don't like them because their fees are outrageous, PLUS the payment processor. Instead a direct bitcoin payment would take just like 3 cents, or even less with Lightning.

You can "fill" a credit card by putting money in when it has no debt, and in fact you can enlarge its "limit". Doesn't matter if they issue a card with 1USD limit you can pay "in advance" a 100$ and that becomes your temporary "limit". So called "prepaid".

Unfortunately those who handle such cards are very hostile to Bitcoin, there are still intermediaries making money because of that.

In the end everyone benefits by kicking them all. Buyer and Seller should transact directly.
3715  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Whatsminer M20 is announced and available for pre-order on: April 17, 2019, 03:58:57 PM
From what i have seen the M20S at 70th (3360W) is the reasonable thing to expect, assuming 48w/t. The M21 didn't look good, looks more like the M10 to me, not sure what its purpose is at 60w/t maybe its just an M10+.
3716  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Downgrade Antimner S9 , Remove security firmware on: April 17, 2019, 03:23:58 PM
So seems like it did not work ? Are you planning to try another way to break that stupid security thing on 2019 firmware?

I have emailed bitmain's support , they said they won't do anything about it.

Obviously, they have chosen to go down this path. The only hope i expect is from the community, same as when they found that S15 flaw that allowed SSH again. Something along these lines would allow people to go back to 2018 or earlier firmware, or even better: Braiins OS.

A quest for freedom has started with those stuck with their gear...
3717  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [30-400PH] KanoPool kano.is 0.9%fee 3.9of10BTC giveaway 🐈 US,NL,JP,NYA,OR,SG on: April 15, 2019, 10:48:06 PM
Hi guys,

I'm trying to find an option in the pool to receive email alerts once my miner gets offline or the hashrate drops below normal (one of the hashboards gets stuck and reboot is needed). Is there such an option and where can I find it?

Thank you in advance!

Minergain definitely does that (and now i don't know how to stop it). You register an account, configure your api and it will start sending you emails when things go wrong (which for me its sadly too often).
If you go into the Monitor / Settings area, you can set the percentage threshold for when you receive alerts. I have mine set to 40% for the emails and 20% for the text alerts.  That will make it much more reliable.  Unfortunately there are times where the shares submitted on the Kano side swings a lot wider than if you were monitoring the devices directly.  If you set it to 0%, then it will never send alerts...

Speaking of monitoring directly, I wonder if there may be interest for an appliance that you put inside your firewall that monitor your miners directly and auto reboot them if they get below a threshold.  It would also show info on the minergain web site of course.  I do that with my own miners so I only need to deal with power supply or fan failure.  The rest is handled automatically.  Unfortunately if I did this, it would not be free (probably a couple hundred for the pc / monitoring software).

I didn't mention it but actually that appears bugged as well, or, it simply won't reflect the changes. If you change those values and refresh the page, they appear back to the defaults. This gave me no clue to know if they were changed or not, and i was looking for a quick way to simply disable the notifications entirely at least until internet and power stabilizes here, but couldn't find any way (or a means to delete the account). Best i could do was mess the api key, which seems to have stopped the emails.
3718  Economy / Economics / Re: KakaoTalk to integrate a cryptocurrency wallet on app on: April 15, 2019, 01:05:44 PM
One of the most popular messaging/chat application today, KakaoTalk, is reported to be in deliberation for possible integration of a crypto wallet.

Kakaotalk is a very Korean phenomenon. I think they can do fiat payments over there using it, not sure. To me it looks bloated, very bloated. Of course Korea has the latest gen smartphones so they don't even notice, but try it with a bit older model and you immediately notice (if the app even installs in your older Android). I don't think there is a kakaotalk lite variant is there?

Japan has Line, China has Wechat (whatever happened to qq), Russia has Telegram (ironically hated by Putin's gov), America has Whatsapp (which sucks the most) and now FB, but thats pulling a group into IM which is redundant since Whatsapp, FB and Instagram are belong to Zuckerberg...

Signal is a "fixed" Whatsapp, but people ignore it. There are private oriented IM like Riot.im (which uses Matrix) and the clients using the tox protocol.

It seems that, as in the early days of IM, we are going to have to use several of them. It all started with Israel's ICQ (yes i know there was talk before), then came others such as AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, etc. An open protocol called XMPP (Jabber) came along and some people use it, most notably Google at first before dumping it for whatever hangouts is.

So how many IM people are supposed to install to communicate with friends? And now each and everyone wants their own coin/token... I'm not opposed to wallet integration into IM, but they should be separate. If Telegram wants an ico, make a separate wallet for it. If both are installed they could integrate, but let people decide if they want both or one. Perhaps they are trying to use their platform as a kind of "free" massive ICO advertising?

Discord was meant as a gamers IM platform, perhaps like the one bundled with Steam (Friends?). Hmm maybe there is MLP reference in there, probably just my imagination...

IRC is good enough. Now get off my lawn! Smiley
3719  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Downgrade Antimner S9 , Remove security firmware on: April 15, 2019, 11:18:50 AM
Also worth trying would be methods for the S11 and the S15. Indeed worth a try for someone with spare controllers... For an extra S9 controller that was already tainted with the 2019 version, its worth a try i think.
3720  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: April 15, 2019, 11:05:03 AM
Hi, I tested the firmware on the S9 13.5 T model and S9i 14 T model and it's great !
I have around 200 old S9 with fixed frequency of 550 MHz can I use the Braiins - OS firmware on the fixed frequency models as well ?

As far as i know, the only possible limitation could be the controller itself:

What Antminer S9 flavors are supported?

All S9 variants (S9, S9i, S9j) are supported, however, the amount of possible variations is rather high. Initially, for this reason we recommend testing our SD card images first. Once you are confident that the firmware operates according to your expectations, you can apply factory transitional firmware images.

So as suggested, try booting one unit with the sd card first. If it doesn't work, you remove the card and move the jumper back and its like nothing ever happened. No worries.
